  • Traditional marriage isn't the "one man, one woman" story you've always heard. It's changed countless times over the last 4,000 years, almost always for the better. Let's take a look at all the different things that marriage has been, and the one thing that has remained constant about marriage over all those millennia.

    Very informative. Now I have a better understanding of why the religious right has been getting away from their "traditional marriage" argument and has started using the term "natural marriage".

      AdamTh1 "Natural marriage"? That's even more laughable than "traditional marriage." We've made friends with a couple of squirrels and they have never mentioned being married. And you'd think two critters getting married would be worth coverage by the 24/7 news channels. The cuteness factor alone would generate ratings. So, why not just call it marriage and acknowledge that it's what humans (and only humans) do...and admit that we're all equal and so we can all get married.

    It was considered Holy in Egypt and Persia for Kings to marry their sisters and daughters. This kept the divine blood of Kings away from anyone else, although the incest had it's... side effects.

      ajones363 A lot of royal families did, particularly the Hasburgs, so the royal holding don't leave the family line.
      This led too the horrifically inbred Charles the 2nd of Spain, who's jaw was so malformed his tongue was constantly sticking out, pointing UP.

    • @aravkris318

      notbobby125 Incest is okay morally. It's also a very natural and convenient form of love. You know your partner well from your childhood;your bond is strong and the trust is there. So ethically and morally I don't understand this whole "Incest" paranoia.
      Ofcourse "side-effects". That'll only take place prominently if multiple generations are created by this way of union.
      But all this is relevant only in the traditional sense of one woman->one man unions.
      Today people have sex with many different people and even if you've fucked your sibling, just wear a condom for heaven's sake.
      Or if you don't want to adopt like gays do or if you are that particular that you want a child from your sibling(rather than the hundred others an average American woman has slept with), you can even take the risk(provided the tests and genetic disorders and stuff).
      I don't see the big fuss.

    This is an awesome video but I can imagine trying to show it to a "traditional marriage" advocate/Christain and them still arguing that the Bible doesn't actually say this stuff. So I would definitely consider adding references to the video. Otherwise many believers will write you off by saying, "He's full of shit, the Bible doesn't say that stuff. • @rodneymcgeejr1842
      @rodneymcgeejr1842 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You just said a mouthful and it's absolutely true! Things like incest, pedophilia, child abuse as well as all types of rape have been going on since the beginning of mankind. Religious leaders have been perpetrating on others through their gospel, and not God's, for their own selfish motives, is not new either. Let's not forget that it wasn't so long ago, that black people held the same position in America as gays do now, through organized religion. Also let's not forget how sensitive and controversial subjects were kept quiet, hidden and made shameful to speak of. Families were more worried about their image and what others might think about them. They would lie, deny, and cover up at any cost, to keep from revealing a family member's perpetration on children. Having no concern for the child's well being, just how things looked. Tradition has been the biggest destructive force in this world, since original sin. Just because these terrible issues were not really known, didn't mean that they weren't going on. So "the good old days" were not really so good. Things have become more exposed, out in plain sight, and harder to conceal now. That's why people long for the good old days. Tradition is the anti-Christ! Wake up people, none of this stuff is really news. All of the evils of mankind that were hidden in darkness in the past, are finally coming to light. Everyone is looking for a scapegoat to take the blame for the ills of society, so as to not bear their own responsibility in it. Cop-outs don't cut it. Perpetrators are perpetrators, no matter where they come from, no group is immune from it.
      I have one more thing to address then I will close. This applies to everyone, but is mostly aimed at the "Christian majority" aka Conservative Christians aka The Religious right etc...of this country and then on from there. The very book you use to place judgement and condemnation on your targeted groups, is also condemning you. If you go about cherry picking through the Holy Bible to find ways to place yourself above others, the book is calling you out too. The Holy Bible can be gone through and twisted to justify any kind of perpetration. That doesn't mean it's right or of God. Those of you who do so as a way to condone your evil deeds, and then claim it being done for God as a justification, are blatantly breaking the 3rd commandment of God. Then, your perpetrating, also blatantly breaks the commandment Jesus Christ gave about "love thy neighbor as thyself." That is your next grave error. You have just placed yourself in a very treacherous place, whether you realize it or not! Don't take my word for it, go read the New Testament in it's entirety and you will know for sure. God doesn't need anyone's help to go about getting His work done, by you perpetrating on others. I pray that everyone who has been deceived and is doing these things, will see the real Gospel of God before it's too late. If this offends you in any manner, don't blame me for it, it means you need to seriously go about reevaluating your standing with God. You are not where you think you are, I assure you. An attitude of "Holier than thou." is not real, there no such thing! That way of thinking will get you into deep trouble! I challenge anyone to show me of any place in the Holy Bible, where Jesus Christ condemned anyone! You cannot do it, because it's not there. Everything you have foolishly believed, and then, you have gone about justifying your wicked deeds with those beliefs, is nothing more than pure crap! Remember, crap is crap! and no matter how you slice it, it still stinks! This only applies to the self identified "Christians" who are doing these things. True Christians know better than to do so, and they don't! I ask God to be merciful on all of us. None are perfect. I ask Him to be more merciful to those who truly don't know better. God is not offended by the truly ignorant, who sin. Those who know better and then choose do so, are the ones that offend Him. I fear the most for those who go out, intentionally deceiving others, in order to accomplish their own corrupt agenda. I plead for you to stop now! Each person is responsible for their own salvation and will have their own hell also. No one, no church doctrine, and group can save you. You must have a one on one relationship with God through the Jesus Christ to be saved, nobody else can do it for you. I pass no judgement and/or condemnation on anyone, regardless of what you may think! I just stated the truth plainly to assist others. None of us have the right to judge and/or condemn. That is God place. I hope this has brought light to anyone who reads this. God Bless Everyone! We all need it!

      1. Many of those religions were hundreds to thousands of years older than the oldest writings of the old testament. Hell, Christianity itself was copied from ancient Egyptian and Babylonian rites.
      2. "know better"? We're talking about a populace that had Christianity forced upon it through military might and historical censorship, what part of bowing to your oppressors faith, even against your own history is "knowing better"?

    • @mariaavalon3730

      And the only reason they are Christians is because European Christianity invaded and forced itself on the populace. Many Africans like Kola Boof for instance advocate that Africans abandon Christianity and Islam and return to their indigenous Pagan faiths.

    The definition of marriage argument isn't nearly as annoying as the claim that marriage is a religious rite and religion has monopoly over it. You only need to look at ancient Chinese culture to see this is a complete and utter exaggeration. Their ancient marriage customs can be traced back a few thousand years ago - at least 5000. Some believe it may even be older and possibly started in middle Neolithic age around 7,000BC. The earliest form of marriage was a mixture of Polygamous and Incestuous type. Incestuous marriages were later banned in late Neolithic age. And then over the next 5000 years it changed several times from one Dynasty to another. These marriages were almost entirely pre-arranged, a custom which continued until the 1900s. And guess what, no religion whatsoever. Marriage in China came about independent of religion.
    Whilst I fully appreciate many people desire religious marriages .... saying your religion has marriage traditions or customs IS NOT the same as saying Marriage is a religious rite. BIG DIFFERENCE.

    • @stoferb876
      @stoferb876 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't have to look outside europe. It took christianity over a thousand years to actually get involved in marriage ceremonies. Weddings were not a religious rite in christianity during it's first 1100 years. And even after that it took a few hundred years more for the church to make church weddings mandatory. It didn't really become a religious monopoly until the 15th century. And by the 18th century, because of the reformation and all that religious turmoil and the rise of more modern state bureaucracies and the enlightment, "the church" started to loose that monopoly again.

    The Old Testament also says that if a woman is raped and screamed for help, only her rapist will be stoned (unless she was somewhere no one could hear). But if she didn't scream, she also has to be stoned for sex outside marriage. Because, you know, silence equals consent I guess.

    The big Conservative "intellectual" on marriage is Robert P. George. You should debunk his stuff. He uses the conjugal argument, not just the traditional one. His point is that gays cannot have a conjugal union because of child birth and where the parts go--teehee. He is the main right wing big wig on this subject and has lots of street cred, bad or worse.

      There is one simple way to debunk his crap. If childbirth is the reason, then why are the heterosexual married couples who cannot produce children suddenly OK? Watch him hem and haw around to answer that question. Then marvel about he goes around bypassing that issue. I love to see these liars start to sweat when they get a taste of their own crap thrown back at them. I would also like to ask him how he knows this crap for sure. Does he have a hotline to God? If so, I would love to make a call myself!

    I come from a culture where women had more than one husband. Something tells me that the kind of people who try to argue against same-sex marriage with the Bible wouldn't like that either...

    The ancient greek thought of marrige as a union for children. You got married with the intent of procreation. The greeks thought of it as you had the wife you married and the man you loved.

    It may have been in this comment section, but I heard someone mention that some people are starting to call it "natural marriage" as opposed to "traditional marriage" which is possibly even more hilarious, as marriage is certainly not a part of human nature.

    I still can't believe marital rape was legal in England til R v R in 1991.
    Also as late as the late '80s wives, along with kids, could be on their husband's British passport.

    Traditions are MEANT to be broken! I freaking hate when people say "BUT TRADITION!" Tradition always changes and trying to stick to them is pointless. Sticking to some basic guides isn't bad but to stick to tradition is.
