Great video man. I got the game yesterday and spent 4 hours for just one day :). Your video helped allot for the parts that i did not quite understand cause the rules i feel like are all over the place. Love the game and i find your commentary very fun and the little texts throughout the video when you mess up some of the rules made me laugh :). Keep it up you are a great contect creator.
Thank you SO much for your nice-ness! I’m glad it helped. I really wish they had handled the rulebook(s) differently... I think this game is just setup to make mistakes.... BUT, since I feel like the purpose of the game is more educational and emotional, it seems to me that “getting all of the rules right” might be besides the point. Of course I continue to try, but I don’t beat myself up for getting it wrong. Not at the expense of the experience.
Hey Tom, you made clear some points of the game for me, thank you for that, but I think you went against the rules when you sent Bruno at 27:13 all over to the top to make something, without resolving all the things before all the way up, starting with rubble. Cheers and keep making these great videos :)
That wasn't a rules violation. He was simply placing the character on that place on the board to clearly show that he was performing the "Place a New Fitting" action. He's not physically going to the roof :P
I'm sure someone has commented on this previously, but I'm just discovering the channel: Tom's voice sounds VERY similar to Jeff Goldblum. He doesn't speak with the same weird cadence as Goldblum, but I couldn't unhear it after I realized who it reminded me of :)
One of these days I'll try to slide a "Must go faster, must go faster" in a video, and we will let the people decide :D But to the best of my memory, this is the first time I've ever heard this..... and it made me laugh.... so thanks for that!
21:04 You do actually have to draw and resolve the first Event card after each Chapter card. This was later corrected on future prints. You made the game a bit easier on yourself.. hehe
Great video Tom. Thus far in the video, rules-wise, at minute 28:00 it seems you poke about and use resources gained from that poke about in order to provide the prerequisite resource (1 parts) for another character during the same action round. Page 300 FAQ states: "This means that the tokens and resources gained in these actions cannot be immediately used to another action during the same stage." So i'm pretty sure you'd have to build the heater or whatever the following round if you don't already have the perquisite parts. Keep in mind though, that i'm an absolute novice and that i'm working through the journal rulebook as I watch your video. I'm also downloading a bunch of helpful files off BGG and reading the forums at the same time in order to get a clear understanding of the rules on my first play. I'm generally intending to play this solo, so I know that if I get in the habit of doing a rule wrong the first time, i'll continue said trend. Thanks again for the detailed video. It has been an invaluable resource in deciphering this odd rulebook of an otherwise very interesting game. At the very least, it's the only game I can think of that gives the option to eat a pet (albeit discourages it in non-dire situations)
Yeah, you’re definitely right about the poke about. I get it sometimes, but messed up sometimes.... I tried to annotate that stuff in the Klingon Subtitles. So hopefully those are semi-helpful. And I’m glad you’re playing this great game! I’ve played it about 5 times now, and with how quirky the rules are (and tough to find) I kind of learned to just do my best, and what feels right. And though I constantly unintentionally cheat, I still haven’t won a game.... so it evens out. Haha!
Tom Teaches yeah-Honestly, you did a great job getting through it compared to me. I seemed to stop every other sentence looking something up on BGG. I mean, I’m not a crazy rules-lawyer, but I do tend to be more exact on solo/co-op games. That being said, the rulebook itself is pretty weak-If it wasn’t such an interesting game, I probably wouldn’t have put this much ‘work’ into figuring it out-In fact without yourself or the BGG community, I would have just given up. It always saddens me when a good game struggles to put it’s best foot forward by producing a good rulebook-Ultimately it only hurts themselves in this competitive and high quality BG market.
Me too!!!! My first two plays took HOURS each. My nose was stuck in that book like non other. And I kept thinking, “for a game that claims you can just start playing, I’m spending a LONG time reading rules....”
Hi Tom good video. Couple of things if you don't mind. 1) The rubble piles in the house take 2 actions to completely remove. The first time you clear a rubble you flip it over to the back side which reveals Rubble Remnants. 2) Not quite sure about this one, but when you draw a map card when scavenging and you do not have, say a locked door, the card tells you to draw another from the EXPLORATION DECK, you drew from the UNKNOWN DECK. Like I say I'm not sure about that one tbh Anyway good vids, good game (sort of!) Thanks
Scotty, you're correct and actually the annotation still isn't quite right. He was supposed to discard the map card face up to the Discard pile, but the part that seems to be still missing is that he needed to then redraw a new card from the *exploration* deck. The way it is portrayed in the playthrough he actually lost an exploration card that he should have been able to replace. "Discard this card AND draw a new card from the Exploration deck".
@@TomTeachesGames Hi, I just had my first play today. Lots of fun, although my starting characters have died by day 5. The first game did take me a few hours. I've saved with 1 remaining character, and am curious to see how long he will survive. The different phases of the game bring a lot of variety. Especially the day phase and exploration are very exciting as these are the moments where you have solve your problems. Great game. I some way I find it resembles Nemesis a bit. The exploration, the struggle for survival, and the escalating problems... but in a different, more realistic setting.
Hi Tom, I know i't been a long time now when you published this video, but I just wanted to let you know that you couldn't use the component that you found in same action to build fitting (28:04) , all actions are played parallel. :) Hope to see expansion playthrough on Your channel :)
You are absolutely right! I think (but it had been a while) I had addressed that in the Klingon subtitled... but I may have missed it. Obviously I made a lot of mistakes.... but sure! If I get my hand on the expansion this would be a fun one to revisit. It was one of my first videos I ever recorded!!
@@TomTeachesGames Great! I've recorded it 2 timea already for my channel, but looking forward for your another let's play :) do you have "tales from the ruined city"?
I’ll have to check it out! And I don’t have that.... I haven’t played the base enough fo history picking your an expansion yet. But I should consider it!
Thanks a ton! I’m glad it was useful! And I hope you have as much “fun” as I have had playing it! Let me know how your first play-through goes. And that app is seriously the best - so I highly recommend it over the book.... just my two cents....
Just played through the first chapter - two dead (wounds and misery) and getting food is hard! Think I missed applying some rules, def forgot to apply the effects when someone dies to survivors and I think i forgot the cold effect at least once, so probably shouldn't have made it as far as I have. It is very good, isn't it? Also, you're right, the app makes gameplay much smoother. Thanks again for the vid!
You bet! And my first two times playing I missed all of those things you mentioned, and more.... so sounds like you’re doing great! Now you need to go watch something uplifting..... I’m sure there is something on the Hallmark Channel to lift you up! 😂
What an amazing playthrough and what a sad turn of events. That ending was brutal. And when you rolled for Arica's -2 Misery and had only 40% chance of succeeding I really thought she was going to die.. But she got lucky...
Thanks! I definite made my fair share of mistakes (rules and strategy) but it's still such a fun experience and a great game design. Very thought provoking.
I believe she actually should have died, according to the rules. It says you roll the black die and compare the result with each character's empathy level. So you only roll it once - otherwise, it would have said "each result" or "the results".
Can you build items the same day as long as it is in a later step of the action or do you have to wait until the next day? Example... I have the resources to build a bed and do so with the first action of a character. Then the rest of the characters take their first action. Can someone then use the bed on a subsequent action the same day or do they have to wait until the next day? The same premise would apply to using resources gathered as well I suppose...ie; can you use resources gathered on an earlier action step in a subsequent step the same day or do you have to wait until the next day? I can't find a definitive reference to this anywhere.
Great question, and I messed this up in part of my video. When you assign your workers to the task you also need to assign the materials. So you probably couldn’t do that for the FIRST action (unless you already had the materials before assigning everyone) but if you get the materials during the first action you can send them with your character for the next action.... does that help?
That makes sense thematically to me and that's the way I have been playing it. Hasn't helped me to win the game but I guess it does make it somewhat easier? Along the same lines... Are resources obtained while scavenging available for trading during that same scavenging phase? I have been playing it as "No" they are not available for that phase. Anyway... not sure it's possible to win this game ever time... could be wrong. This one may be more difficult than "Robinson Crusoe"! Enjoying your play through... Thanx for the help.
Yeah! I have it too, and I keep wanting to record a play through.... but I keep getting overwhelmed by recording the setup... and by losing in 5 minutes 😂 I’m one of those in the camp of “I still haven’t won the first scenario and I have tried several times.” Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
FYI: you should always use the helper app rather than the Book of Scripts because it is routinely updated with changes and clarifications. For example: 200 has been changed to tell you that you DO pull an event card after you resolve a chapter card (21:56).
It tells you right on the bottom of the chapter card to draw an event after reading the objectives, I had to come back to this vid to see what was going on: 30 seconds into the game I hit a glaring contradiction. Thanks for your comment.
Hey Tom! Great video. My game came last night and my brother and I were nearly lost. I'm a visual learner, so seeing someone else do this rather than reading the journal is priceless. Thank you so much! :)

44.40 I think the rule tells you to discard the map card which is not relevant to the location card to the exploration discard pile, not the exploration deck. And then you draw a new exploration card from the exploration deck, not from the unknown deck. Do I get it right?
It is absolutely possible that you are right! It has been so dang long since I've played it.... and I don't have my rules near me.... but I'm absolutely willing to say that you're likely the one that's right in this case. (also, I"m sorry for the delay, I could have sworn I responded to this last week, but right now TH-cam is showing I didn't reply.... so I'm replying again just to be sure I did....)
You cannot go under Fitting card space for placing new fitting card . there is block (look at Save sheet card) . and there is no need you go under fitting card to place a fitting card " Number 300 in Scripts book : The Action icon shown next to the Fittings deck does not indicate that Characters must clear the path to this place. The whole deck placed on the Fittings space is available immediately and at any point of the game. The Characters must only clear the path to the space where a new Fitting will be placed."
