I found you guys about 2 weeks ago looking on how to play board games as my gf and I are more on the novice side if board games, I've been watching nothing but your videos ever since. I love the longer ones but makes me appreciate the editing you guys do because it seems so smooth
Watching this playthrough was such an experience! Kudos for playing a game of such depth. It's great when BGG and GameNight! devote a video to something with substance, rather than more casual quick games. I know there is much more to producing a game of length, and your efforts are appreciated!
This episode was the most pleasant surprise of all 5 seasons for me. I don't like coop games at all (usually can't even watch them) but I really loved you guys playing this game - it was so entertaining and it kept me in the story like if I played with you. Keep doing your great work. This show is awesome.

Wow, what a game! I always enjoy seeing you guys play. I've seen many of your videos (and bought some games because of it: Magic Maze and Freedom: The Underground Railroad come to mind), but this was really special. I watched it in one-hour stints, and found it extraordinary to see something that has such a serious theme and is a good game at the same time. It is a bit like watching a tragic play, or a movie like Schindler's list: Not something one would necessarily call 'fun', but something one would not want to miss nonetheless. Thank you so much for drawing my attention to this one: I can't wait for my own copy to arrive. Looking forward to the next Gamenight!
I've been on quite a run for tons of coop games lately for my group such as The Thing, Zombicide 2nd ed, The Grizzled, Aeon's End and this caught my eye. I'm glad you, and the 4 of you, did a playthrough, and more than 4hrs! ❤😅 Nice, narrative-driven game, love how it looks busy but engaging, i saw someone in BGG made a diorama of the board, like whoa! 😮 either way thanks a bunch guys, needed a playthrough to get through some stuff from this game.

Hey Guys, thanks for producing this fantastic show. I have finally recieved my copy of This War of Mine, my Partner gave it to me for Xmas. I was so excited after I watched your play through. This and Scythe are my favourite game night productions. I own both the games now thank to watching your playthroughs. I also got the Wind Gambit expansion for Scythe so I am totally spoilt lol. I hope you all have a fantastic Xmas and look forward to the next season of Gamenight.
This game is great. It will keep you on the edge to the end. Your characters will always be hungry, bleeding or sad. Every new day comes with a challenge to be tackled by taking those calculated risks and hopefully you will tip the scale just enough to get by.
Recently picked this up, excited to see a play through from you guys! I appreciate the effort. Over 4 hours in one go, and with such a heavy emotional game like this one.
Out of the 4 games I played I have won 1 time. The other 3 I barely made it or didn't make it from the first chapter. The time I did win. When I lost my first character I decided not to go out and persue getting the 3rd character and it made it easier to get water and food. I also got a hatchet early, which helped. And I rolled lucky and grilled the hatchet symbol on night raids. I also didnt work to hard for the objectives and just used the time to prepare for the negative effect.
At 1:02:51 Aaron reads what they can buy/trade...he lists "shovel" as one of the items. Later at 1:12:36 Lincoln asks if shovel was a trade option for the rubble and was told "no". Ooops!
Also on the location cards if you read the top right corners they tell you what kind of things you will encounter there. I.e. Rubble, closed door. You can then supply your party correctly with a shovel or lockpick.
Hi, didn't read throught all the comments nor did I watch the whole video but all the day actions has to be paid for before you resolve the actions. In the very first day, you looked throught a heap and found an eletrical component and immediately searched throught fittings deck to find what you can build. You can't do that. Actually you have to choose a fitting card, place it on the board, pay for it and only then resolve it together with other action. You cant pay with anything you find in the same round. :-)

On your first day action phase it is possible to have everyone take 3 actions each. You can eat at any time. Which will allow you to take 9 total actions. Even though you'd lost it again when you have to eat and have no food. But you can accomplish a lot.

Having won the board game once and the video game once It's fun to watch folk who haven't played it before. It's a tough game. I'll get it to my gaming group soon and witness how they react to it.
The beauty of this game is that its kinda like real war. It doesnt matter if you make every right decision, your still probably gonna die because of something out of your control…Thats just War for you.
Don't know if it will be fixed later. But the way building fittings works is you put the person on the space that you want to build on. So you could technically build more than one thing at a time.
Which also helps to stop illegal placement of fittings(like the first fitting that was placed) because each action is seen as simultaneous. So one character is clearing the heap while the other was building the fitting in a different area of the house.
So all the actions are happening at the same time, fine. That doesn't mean all discoveries are made at the same time to me. It could take hours to clear rubble. I could search a heap and find something valuable instantly. Plus since one player is in charge of all characters just how does someone perform multiple actions simultaneously unless they have some extra arms and extra brains to do all the simultaneous thinking? Not realistic. I'll let common sense override the rulebook if this is what the rulebook says.
Of course the board game cant display realtime in a realistic way... how should that be even possible? But to me at least, its realistic to say that one character builds a bed on the 2nd floor while another character goes through furniture in the basement. If the first character wouldnt have the materials to build a bed, he wouldnt even start and do something else instead, until the other character comes upstairs with the new stuff he found to start building afterwards. Sounds realistic to me.
Hi, great video. Thanks so much. I am learning how to play this game... did one run-through solo. But I made some mistakes so your video is definitely helping!!! So far I absolutely love this game... I have not finished watching the entire video yet but I will... I think we need to read an event right at the beginning though, right after the chapter card? So the first chapter is only 3 days long, I think ... can someone confirm? Because that gives you much less time to actually accomplish the objective.... Also an unrelated question .... I am fascinated by those books behind Nikki’s head and I was wondering what they are - they’re nicely arranged in an almost rainbow colored pattern....

i like the setup of this coop game as opposed to each person having their own character, since you are usually making decisions as a group anyway. The only thing it might lower immersion since you don't identify with your character

Not sure about the board game, but in the vid game their is a way to survive until the end. This board game seems to focus on a lot of random roles and card flips, which results in it being harder. I heard the board game is cooler with the Memories expansion, which deepens the lore for each character and gives your their thoughts on a day to day basis.
British .303 I think the game is just between production runs but I am not certain. It is based on a video game IP so it is possible the license might have lapsed. Best of luck tracking it down. -Lincoln

Also, bandages and meds can be assigned at ANY time. This helps to prevent losing them to looters during night raids.
boardgameroamer While I agree wholeheartedly with your point about bandages and meds, not using the knife once you've found it is just crazy, and completely breaks the theme of the game. That may be part of the rules, but I believe the designers also recommend you go with what you feel works thematically. Not using a knife you found because of 'rules' is a little too 'gamey' for a game like this.

The problem isn't the journal, it's passive players who don't assert their authority in a game and just let everyone else tell them what to do. Those people should not play co-ops.
Technically it does, but an alpha player is someone who runs someone else's turn (to my mind, at least), so in that respect the rule book only defines whose turn it is. Alpha players take over someone's turn, and the rule book can't prevent that. That's my opinion, anyway, don't mean to be a contrarian
I get what you're saying, and I definitely agree that the rulebook doesn't prevent someone from voicing their opinion much more loudly and forcefully than others. But I feel like the journal should still shut that down when possible, because no matter how much the alpha tries to tell you what to do, at the end of the day you have the final say if you have the book. If you're a very passive, timid player, you might concede and just do what everyone else wants. But then there's really not much that a game can do to get someone to be more aggressive.
Hey guys, I’m just wondering if it’s possible to add a new character more than once, for example you start with 3 characters and then gain one, but they later die, is it then possible to add another person again to go back to 4 or can you only add another character once?
Is it me or was the combat at 3:32:10 executed wrongly? I think you are UNABLE to reroll the enemies die's with your prowess. Besides, that one of the enemies has a prowess 1, so he should reroll his die when he misses. Moreover, you may reroll (use you prowess each combat round).
More importantly ... where can i get this board game and How many Bottle Caps is it ? for all how don't get that humor ... Bottle Caps is from the "Fallout" series
Hey! I’ve been loving this show so far! Are you willing to play this game again, but with the two expansions? The video game was one of my favorites, and I’m liking this so far! I think one adds more friendly people, as well as more encounters and locations, etc. and there’s also another one which would add more hostile characters, as well as adding children, like the game. Also, something that I learned from the game is that combat, and moral actions are not incentivized (unless you have one of the combat oriented characters, and know hiding spots and patrols decently well), so donating those vegetables wasn’t nessecarily a good idea. Usually, raiding innocents or stealing is usually a safer choice than trying to build yourself up, with the video game being more easy than this. But please, play more! Also, I recommend the Pathologic tabletop game. Pathologic was much more brutal than This War of Mine, and I hope the tabletop would be as brutal, hopeless, and soul crushing as the game!

Hi Lincoln, thanks for replying. I really enjoy these playthroughs. However this particular video confirmed my fears about TWoM and why I didn't back it on KS. Essentially it's a remake of the PC game, and the multiplayer aspect is completely tacked on. I wish that the designers had been braver and thought outside the box a little more. Maybe give each player a character, with hidden agendas (not necessarily traitors), or competing colonies or something.
I get that. For us it worked. We love the conversations and the shared results. Maybe if each player represented a character it might have worked better for you. The problem I see with that is feeling betrayed by others when your character must die for the good of the group. Sure you likely get a new character and continue but it would probably sting. Oh well, not all games are for everyone. Thanks for the note and for watching.
I think Dave was right here. It's essentially like someone turning up at the door begging for food, and you know you've got a box of food set aside for someone else, and you choose not to share it with the stranger. You're still having the food and choosing not to share it, even if it is earmarked for something else.
Thank you for playing a game that's not only fun to play, but really fun to watch. The euro style board games you usually play are fun to play, but super boring to watch. That's the only criticism I have with you guys, you suck at picking games to play on camera. More cooperative games, or games with heavy storytelling elements or at least games where the game state is very visible to the viewer.
Lets see, unnecessarily long, unnecessarily hard, I don't think any of the elements make fun. Yes, you give a message, good luck finding people to play this game again though.
It was nice that he introduced this game to the group, but Aaron, putting aside that he was the teacher, appears to be one of those dreadful alpha gamers. It drove me nuts. I couldn't finish watching. (But I do thank you for answering some questions I was having about the game.)
Especially at poor Nicki's expense. They barely asked her opinions. Aaron literally making most of the decisions and basically playing the game solo with three friends watching
The way you guys completely marginalized and ignored Nikki was kinda pathetic. Every time she had an opinion she was shot down or completely ignored. Nobody even looked her in the eye. That's what game tutorials are for. TWoM is a cooperative game and we got to see that cooperation. The moves were discussed - the text on the cards was read out aloud and the group acted upon it.

If you're a very passive, timid player, you might concede and just do what everyone else wants. But then there's really not much that a game can do to get someone to be more aggressive.
agreed - no tackling the real alpha problem. not sure that it's timidity as it is not wanting to cause conflict in what should be a fun experience

Hey guys, I’m just wondering if it’s possible to add a new character more than once, for example you start with 3 characters and then gain one, but they later die, is it then possible to add another person again to go back to 4 or can you only add another character once?

Is it me or was the combat at 3:32:10 executed wrongly? I think you are UNABLE to reroll the enemies die's with your prowess. Besides, that one of the enemies has a prowess 1, so he should reroll his die when he misses. Moreover, you may reroll (use you prowess each combat round).
I love when you guys play co-ops, I love your discussions and how none of you allow Alpha Gamer-ness to take control.
Just saying, if players read my comment : You cant use Marko reroll on the enemies dices like at 3:34:00. Marko can reroll twice on his owns dices.

Even in this thread they are not sure if there is 1 or 2 Cards drawn. I still think you should draw 2 Cards.
I have only drawn the chapter one event card. It sets the scene for the game and gives you 1 day to set your self up for am event.
Wrong. You only draw one on the first day. When you get to chapter 2, after reading the text it tells you to draw an event. Chapter 1 does not.
This has since been corrected - when the game begins you draw the Chapter 1 card AND the first event card

Hey! I’ve been loving this show so far! Are you willing to play this game again, but with the two expansions? The video game was one of my favorites, and I’m liking this so far! I think one adds more friendly people, as well as more encounters and locations, etc. and there’s also another one which would add more hostile characters, as well as adding children, like the game. Also, something that I learned from the game is that combat, and moral actions are not incentivized (unless you have one of the combat oriented characters, and know hiding spots and patrols decently well), so donating those vegetables wasn’t nessecarily a good idea. Usually, raiding innocents or stealing is usually a safer choice than trying to build yourself up, with the video game being more easy than this. But please, play more! Also, I recommend the Pathologic tabletop game. Pathologic was much more brutal than This War of Mine, and I hope the tabletop would be as brutal, hopeless, and soul crushing as the game!

Hi Lincoln, thanks for replying. I really enjoy these playthroughs. However this particular video confirmed my fears about TWoM and why I didn't back it on KS. Essentially it's a remake of the PC game, and the multiplayer aspect is completely tacked on. I wish that the designers had been braver and thought outside the box a little more. Maybe give each player a character, with hidden agendas (not necessarily traitors), or competing colonies or something.
I get that. For us it worked. We love the conversations and the shared results. Maybe if each player represented a character it might have worked better for you. The problem I see with that is feeling betrayed by others when your character must die for the good of the group. Sure you likely get a new character and continue but it would probably sting. Oh well, not all games are for everyone. Thanks for the note and for watching.

I think Dave was right here. It's essentially like someone turning up at the door begging for food, and you know you've got a box of food set aside for someone else, and you choose not to share it with the stranger. You're still having the food and choosing not to share it, even if it is earmarked for something else.

Thank you for playing a game that's not only fun to play, but really fun to watch. The euro style board games you usually play are fun to play, but super boring to watch. That's the only criticism I have with you guys, you suck at picking games to play on camera. More cooperative games, or games with heavy storytelling elements or at least games where the game state is very visible to the viewer.

It was nice that he introduced this game to the group, but Aaron, putting aside that he was the teacher, appears to be one of those dreadful alpha gamers. It drove me nuts. I couldn't finish watching. (But I do thank you for answering some questions I was having about the game.)
Especially at poor Nicki's expense. They barely asked her opinions. Aaron literally making most of the decisions and basically playing the game solo with three friends watching

That's what game tutorials are for. TWoM is a cooperative game and we got to see that cooperation. The moves were discussed - the text on the cards was read out aloud and the group acted upon it.
Can't please everyone; glad they do it the way I prefer.
