    I really appreciate this video. As a proud owner of my second Subaru Outback, many of the videos posted do not apply the Subaru AWD system to scenarios that 95% of owners will encounter. Here in the north east our winters have been short and less burdened by snow. However when snow does happen a Subaru AWD system is more than adequate to handle just about anything encountered. So for me having the practicality of better fuel economy and more agile maneuverability, in supermarket parking lots, is an advantage that led me to my choice of an Outback versus a traditional SUV.

      Smart buy for sure, Even in heavy rain they hold better. Next ride I'm going back to a Crosstrek. The Outback is a thought, but I don't care as much about the more luxury part of it.

      He does have Winter tires: HUGE KEY would be his Plates "Quebec" winter tires are mandatory by end of DEC 30th.
      He also mentioned this in description "Winter tires Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 studded"
      I am bit upset too as I thought it was all-seasons as it slipped so much - but black ice like he mention above may be a huge factor.

    Great video! I just bought a 21 Outback Onyx XT 2 days ago. I came home from work today with snow up to my knees at the end of my driveway from the snow plow going by all day. It was the nastiest, heaviest snow I've plowed with my ATV in 3 years. It had been snowing with freezing rain and sleet mixed in all day long. I got stuck. I calmly engaged the "deep snow and mud" X-mode. (For some reason, the Onyx XT is the only outback with this mode, and it is the singular reason I picked the Onyx trim.) I drove right out! I might not have got stuck at all with winter tires, which I have already ordered.

    • @subielife4life
      @subielife4life 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      dual xmode(deep snow/mud) allows for more wheel spin compared to regular xmode, that's the only difference between regular xmode and dual xmode.
      You can actually achieve the same results with regular xmode by simply turning Traction control off when xmode is activated, which allows for more wheel spin just like dual xmode....but I guess most people dont really know how traction control works nor do they know how or when to turn it off.
      So i guess Subaru is trying to make it easier for those people to go offroading.....and really thats the whole reason behind xmode, to make it easier to offroad. Cuz when you think about it...people were going thru deep snow and mud in Subaru's way before xmode came out....

    Let me tell everyone that even if you have a Subaru or not if you don't have the right tires then you are stuck, i have seen subarus, Audi, BMW X and trucks 4x4 or AWD and so on getting stuck or not even performing a simple task that a FWD with the right tire could, I'm in Pa and we just got hit with 20-22 inches of snow in 2 days, I live on a one way street with cars parked on both sides of the street, I literally while shoveling snow I saw a wrx, a brand new Impreza sedan with its dealer tags and a crosstreck getting stuck at different points of my block and times, a really good all season tire makes a Subaru good, a all weather tire makes a Subaru great, a good winter tire makes a Subaru a beast, I am a proud owner for the past 11 years of a 99 Subaru legacy GT 5spd that had 70k when purchased and now with over 240k with original motor and transmission with general altimax artic snow tires and its a beast, also 3 months ago just purchased a 2015 Subaru legacy 3.6R with 78k that came with brand new Michelin pilot sport all season and I am so disappointed at tires, again at the tires and not the car, I don't mess with safety so pay for snow tires or pay for the shop to repair you car. Good video👍 subaru💪💪 your tires are studded right? That's beast mode to the next level😂

      Snow tires are like night and day. AWD or 4×4 makes no difference if you have the wrong tire on. Also in Europe it's mandatory to use snow tires in the winter even if you don't get any snow. FWD with snow tires is pretty impressive as well.

    Thanks for the video! AS an owner of a 2013 Impreza 2.0 Limited I appreciate the test. I have many family members with Subaru's of various ages and have found that the newer ,models rely so heavily on computer assist traction control that the system is getting "bogged down" by complexity. That goes to say that with my older model and no X-Mode/ electronic AWD it does great in winter living in Toronto, Canada. Having driven my family members vehicles ranging from Crosstrek's to Outback's (newer model years) in the snow I do notice a difference in reaction. It is at times beneficial and in others not so much. Another HUGE area is TIRES! I'm almost certain you have All-Seasons on that Crosstrek. In conditions like your test that would be best suited for snow-tires. Then I would love to see how the test results differ. Thanks again, stay safe and healthy!

    Even my 2016, with no X-Mode, is impressive on slippery roads, hills, and off-camber climbs. It can lift a tire or two and continue climbing. I just have to keep applying gentle throttle and let the TCS computer vector the torque.
    My Jeep YJ wouldn't continue climbing once a wheel or two lifted unless I packed heavy cargo in the back...until I installed a lunchbox locker in the rear.
    I'm planning on a rear lunchbox locker for the Crosstrek too, even though it will never be the offroader that a steel-armored open Jeep can be. I'm also trying to figure out some anti-swaybar disconnects for the Crosstrek. It already has skids, AT Trails, and a winch.

      Indeed. One who has the best car, even with awd or 4x4, without good tires the vehicule could be unsafe or just plain boring to drive. Most of the time, the price difference is only a few bucks. Exemple: It cost me 265$ Canadian per tire with tax (15% here) and installed. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV 225/60/17. The cheapest tire would of been about 200$ and it doesn't include a front bumper and higher rate insurance after accident. Hahah!

      There's not much of gain in gas mileage, unless you commute close by maybe. Would be handy of you need some electricity if going camping. I prefer the 2.5 engine because it has that much more HP for carrying my roadtrip gears and flooring it when it is needed 😄 I would suggest trying them out. They both drive the same. Then there's looks... that's up to you. I think all the new crosstrek will come with the 2.5 next gen. Up to you! Enjoy! Get winter dedicated tires if you want real awd fun in winter!

  • @BlPlN
    @BlPlN 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One thing I want to mention that a lot of people seem to forget or just not know when it comes to newer Subarus... The vast majority of time, it ain't the torque converter giving out under load. Too many people don't give the AWD computer - which can be slow at times - to figure itself out and apply torque where it needs to go. Just stay on the gas, don't floor it, and you'll be fine. Worst thing you can do is take your foot off the gas too early, as these cars really like momentum - even if it's a mere crawl. This is a good illustration of that: th-cam.com/video/JuuUusoXqiU/w-d-xo.html

      I'm currently getting 37-39MPG with my 2016 CVT Crosstrek, which is about 5MPG better than the EPA rates it. A rooftop box and 2" hitch means I can also haul luggage, toys, or construction supplies with 3-4 passengers in this little car. I can't complain. I CAN add aluminum skids/rockers, winch, LSDs, lift, mudders, and more if I want to get further off the beaten path, but a cheap old Jeep with lockers would still be less susceptible to expensive damage or getting stuck. The 87 Subaru justy's with the three cylinder motor where the best. I drove down into the ditch with three foot of snow stopped then pulled right back up out of it never even spun a tire. 32 MPG. So why did they stop making these great rigs.?
    Anytime four-wheel drive with a push of a button in the middle of the gear shift knob. I know they made some after 87 but they were crap compared to the 80s models.

    Question for people in the know, can you still drive with studded tires when you get to a clean but of road, or do they just heat up and melt the tire?

    • @OutdoorFun01
      @OutdoorFun01  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The studs won't melt the tires even if there's no snow. In my part of the country, we have a restricted date range we are allowed studs tires on the road. It is mostly because of the damage it can do to the road. For safety reason, and for your tires life span, you should change the tires for all-season or summer tires when off winter period.

    • @haymantaylor7583
      @haymantaylor7583 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Studs are little spikes made of tungsten-carbide ( the same thing drill bits are made of). They are very very hard.
      Think about how soft rubber is. That's what the tire is made out of. Compare a drill bit to anything made of rubber. Drill bit wins every time.
      Studs will usually wear down slower than the tire, because the studs are considerably harder than any rubber can be.
      Think about a rubber tire on an ice rink. It doesn't matter what the tread pattern is, if the ice is smooth, the tire has nothing to grab.
      Studs stick slightly out of the tire, and scrape into the ice, giving you traction to move forward.
      If there's no ice for them to scrape into, they will scrape the surface of the road instead.
      Roads are made of rock. Rock is pretty strong, but with millions of cars passing over it, even the soft rubber tires are made of wears away the surface of the road.
      If you drive a tire with studs on are pavement, the tire will be fine.
      The tires are designed to take the abuse of driving on solid rock. The studs have no problem being slammed into solid rock, as they are stronger than the road.
      The road, on the other hand, wears away incredibly fast when you have studs, compared to when you are using a rubber tire.
      TLDR:
      You could run studs all summer long if you wanted to, but if everyone did, they would have to replace the entire road every year due to damage.
      This post is a mess, but I feel I got the information out. Maybe not in the best order, but I think I got everything.

    • @bubbalo3388
      @bubbalo3388 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can drive on bare pavement with studded tires but you need to drive a little more cautiously and not speed, brake sooner and take corners more cautiously because you won't have the same grip on bare pavement as a regular tire because of the added metal studs which will make the tired more prone to skidding. If you ever wore plastic or metal kleated shoes before then you may understand what I mean that you get great traction on the field but once you get off the field and onto pavement the traction isn't very great if you try to run and stop.
      As far as keeping studded tires on for the season and driving on them daily, I would recommend to wait until you know bad weather is in the forecast before you put the on to prolong the life of the studs. They will last a few years depending on how much you drive on them on bare pavement. But the better condition you keep them in makes them more efficient for traction in snow and ice.
      If the studs ever wear down too far, you can have the tires restudded.

      @@bubbalo3388 Thx for your insight.
      I feel the need to ad that this might be true to cheapo studded tire (they get rounded, used and pushed inside the tire or just falls out). But I recommend buying a good quality at this point. The ones I'm using are the top best on the market. The studs will last much longer than the rubber. I accelerate hard, brake hard when needed and drift at higher speed with them. They will last about 4 winters to 5 winter (could go more, but doing lots of milage and having fun). I install them early November until late April.

    • @OutdoorFun01
      @OutdoorFun01  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've owned a few Subarus (2007, 2011, 2017, 2019 and 2021) and they never failed me in snow. But this Crosstrek is my first Subaru to have lots of ground clearance. What did I think of it after the test? Well of course this is an obstacle most people won't encounter going to the grocery store. But I wanted to push it see how it would handle it. Two things I can say: First - Any car is has good has the tires limits. Second - X-mode really did a great job at managing the AWD. Finally, the car has proven me, again, to be reliable. Fits my needs in term of AWD, comfort and fun. That's what matters to me. Thanks for the great question!
