Fun fact: The late great Alan Rickman had a look of genuine shock when he was dropped at the end, because he was told he'll be dropped at the count of 3, but they dropped him early.
So many Christmas movies take place on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas. Are you willing to discount stories like a Christmas Carole because it takes place the night before Christmas? Also, I'm PRETTY sure the movie ends, just as the aforementioned Dickens story, after midnight, making it Christmas DAY
Well, to be fair, most of Europe celebrates Christmas Eve instead of Christmas morning. Christmas morning is mainly celebrated in English-speaking countries.
This entire series seems to skip my sub feed, just came across it randomly as a suggested video. Gee thanks TH-cam for hiding the single best channel in this joint
I love how whenever a destructive experiment is shown with slow motion they always put some calming classical music in the background. Also Derek makes such a good villain.
Oh boy, if I have said it once I've said it a million times. Ballistics gel does not represent flesh very well at all for anything but ballistics. Spine broken, neck broken. Not ripped in half. Skin is very strong.
Yeah the issue I have with the ballistics gel dummy tests is that they're only meant for brunt force impact but science guys on youtube use it for nearly everything
@@tighegilmore9202 yeah real muscle and sinew are much more fibrous, you wouldnt be dismembered from a 10 meter drop...... it would hurt a LOT and you might break bones, but you would not be turned into a human jello spill.
that was much better than past episodes, I like that it broke the 4th wall and made it more like a youtube video and didn't try to remake a film but with less budget. Was very self aware and I loved it
I really like the videos but, I don't think your testing of the whole "hose drop thing" was even close to accurate. If you take 15 seconds and rewatch the scene. First he doesn't just drop off the edge like your dummy; he jumps out away from the explosion. Giving him at least some give at the end due to the pendulum effect. Next he only falls about 2/3 the total distance before the hose (which is still a few turns around the extremely heavy real) catches. Turning the high mass real (heavy enough to nearly drag him back out the window) would reduce the already decreased impact on his waist even more. the real then rips off the wall and slides lowering him the last 1/3 of the distance. Not saying the results wouldn't be the same, But its that real falling twice the distance he did and catching at the end that would have been the problem.
This is great, due to just the density of references...even the twinkie rant and the slow fall are included, and giving Derek the gun and calling him trustworthy is just kinda hilarious...however, without fail, the Shade Ball joke is just perfect...great episode as always, thanks for covering the best Christmas Movie, and have a happy holiday!
While effectively landing on a loop of firehose is probably going to be fatal, I don't think the tensile strength of ballistics gel gives an accurate representation of the results. Does anyone have any ideas for what could stand in for the connective tissue, muscles and tendons?
Also, at the risk of the answer being "break your wrists, elbows and/or shoulders, possibly ripping your arms off" I recall John McLain holding the hose with both hands during the jump, so I wonder what difference that makes.
im thinking you would need the fibrous tissue be fully integrated into the structure. the only real way to test something like that would be corpses :D
A couple of thoghts regarding the firehose: 1: john m is not solely relying on the hose around his waist he is also holding it with his hands, 2: the holder gives way almost immediately that his weight pulls on it 3: john m also jumps out which makes him not fall straight down but in a form of a pendulum motion I am not claiming he would survive it unharmed but there are some things to factor in
I was gonna say the same thing. There are other contributing variables that weren't explored. His fingertips would have 100% gotten ripped off from grabbing that ledge though. I always thought that was nuts.
@@SuperWumpkins Reminds me of how in assassin's creed if you fall 10 stories onto your feet, you die, but you'll survive a 10 story drop onto your fingertips.

Sympathetic explosion makes sense. McClane threw the contraption down the shaft and watched probably expecting a smaller less fireball-laden explosion and this explains why he looked so surprised when the fireball erupted and shot up the shaft. Now maybe the missile wouldn't go off, but those levels looked to be under construction, so maybe there was another fuel source of some kind on that level that could have been set off by the C4?
Feels weird since I've been watching alot of Smosh in the past few months after not seeing it since maybe 2012/2013 and I just started rewatching Vsauce videos after maybe a 3 year hiatus. To see Ian in a Vsauce 3 video feels like a weird full circle I wasn't expecting
Fantastic episode! It was great seeing Derek play Hans!! Can't wait to share this when it goes live to everyone, but for now, I'm going to go watch Die Hard, as is traditional in my house! Bonus, The Movies That Made Us on Netflix have a great episode all about Die Hard. I think much of it was filmed in an actual tower, not a soundstage! They got in a lot of trouble for it too.
When John jumped with the fire hose around him, would it be possible if he jumped far enough out to take the slack off the hose and swing into the window?
Fun piece of trivia: that's actually film grain...albeit digital film grain added in post. One thing I did for this show was shoot in the same aspect ratio as every film we are doing (anamorphic for Die Hard) but also, if the film was shot on film, to recreate that "look". What happens is when you watch a 4K video like we are doing but have it on a smaller viewer (default TH-cam player size or device that isn't true 4K) it basically oversamples the image so you have more pixels in less space which makes things like film grain or hard edges seem greater than they are because the overall sharpness has increased.
it does make me want to watch that scene again because I also think the hose was spooled and he jumped outward not straight down. so, there really should be more of a pendulum effect.
The "yippie kay yey" was cut wasn't necessarily because of swearing word, well partly, but mainly because legal reasons. I think even the fonts used for the title thing were discussed heavily to avoid any copyright infringement
1. air duct actually has insulation inside it glued to each wall, made of rockwool or something similar. 2. if air duct system was attached properly, it will be able to support at least one normal weight person. 3. air duct can be as big as needed to provide the amount of air required so it can be big enough that you can even crouch walk inside it if not walk.
