    shhhhhh
    Also to address a lot of comments about how in the films the sound makes the aliens expose their soft meaty parts which makes them vulnerable....you are correct. That is how it is in the movie. An interesting hurdle with this show is we generally need to get by on fair use. Certain elements we riff off need to be changed to make sure we won't be sued. I literally have to send the scripts and the final videos to a lawyer to make sure that they fall within fair use. The magic of movies!

    • @pearjayx

      I couldn't hear it with my headphones (sony wh-1000 xm3) with or without noise canceling (which I turned on so make everything extra quiet 😄) But when playing it over my laptop speakers I could easily hear it! So, try again with another speaker and hopefully you'll hear it 'cause I kinda freaked out when I couldn't hear it at 22!

    • @cavalrycome
      @cavalrycome 3 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      TH-cam's compression algorithm cuts out those high frequencies, at least it did last time I looked into that so if some sound did actually play during that part of the video, it probably wasn't 18 kHz anymore.

    • @nerd_nato564

    • @cavalrycome
      @cavalrycome 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DelphinidaeZeta Interesting. The only way to really check that the sound you're hearing is 18 kHz though would be to download the audio without re-encoding it into another format and actually look at a spectrogram of it to see if there's a line at 18 kHz. I would do that myself but I don't know how to download it without re-encoding it.

    If the alien's hearing is so acute you literally couldn't hide from them, in the second one it took 3 feet of solid concrete to hide their whispering....if they got within 15 feet of you in the open they'd literally hear your heartbeat and the blood circulating through your veins, let alone your breathing.

    I’d say no. You can hear where there is an absence of sound, like when someone walks into a room and a background noise like a fan goes quiet. If the monster got close enough it could hear you due to the lack of sound in that area, if the ambient sound allowed it.

    • @CosmicDoggoo
      @CosmicDoggoo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This is basically echo-location. Just instead of generating a sound to determine distance, you take advantage of the already existing noises. The TH-cam channel "It's Okay To Be Smart" made a video showing 2 blind people using this to "see".
      Also one of the sound engineers for this film said something along the lines of "The production team consensus was that these are intelligent beings that communicate and even use echo-location". Which seems to be backed up by the clicking noises they make in the movie. So no need for ambient noise :D

    for that A -> Bb modulation i would recommend a two measure, three chord modulation using an Edom chord to a Bbdom chord to an Fdom chord over to BbM unless it's minor in which case i have no idea.

  • @anubia-bastet8825

    There is never anything as true silence that people can "hear". Even the quietest place you can imagine still has ambient sounds. Even an anechoic chamber still has sound, such as your own heartbeat and breathing. I'm one of the few who can experience true silence as I am deaf and even with a description it likely be impossible for anyone who hasn't experienced it to fully understand.
    (whoops) commented before his explanation.

    Once again only one problem with this video, the aliens have super hearing like a bats for echo location so their ears would be much, much more sensitive to sounds, so yes you could probably incapacitate one or kill one with a jet engine level of sound

    • @strateeg32
      @strateeg32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats your only problem? This is one of the worst movies with a lot of plotholes.
      These aliens only have their hearing but are as deaf as a grandma with popsticles in her ears. Literally cant even hear loud breathing 5 feet away

    Great video series.
    I feel like you missed the biggest plot hole in the original movie that should affect survival. If these creatures are sensitive enough to sound that they can hear normal human conversation or a person running from say 1/4 mile away, then they should be able to easily hear human body functions like heartbeat and breathing from 10 ft. way. That is based on the science of how sound goes through an exponential drop in intensity/amplitude due to dispersal of the wave as wave surface area increases.
    There are multiple animals in nature that can hunt solely via heartbeat of their prey, yet there are multiple scenes in the movie where our protagonists survive with a creature less than 10 ft. away just by staying still and keeping quiet.
    I thought you were on this path when you started talking about the sounds of bodily functions, yet that ended up just being a tangent that was not fully addressed.

    This is a great one for educational video! I wasn't a big fan of what I saw of the movie, as it didn't seem to be very practical, but this explored quite a lot! Additionally, that toy gun happens to have been used plenty around this neighborhood, and the scene with it felt just right.

    4:43 it works by directing the sound waves off to other panels until the waves dissipate enough, never been in one room but i think if you angle just right inside the panels you can hear the first echo just like a normal room.

    Tried to participate in the feeling sounds experiment on 8:25.
    I don't know what device you would want to use for this.
    Every device I have doesn't vibrate enough so I can feel anything, at a where sound level where I can't hear the sounds anymore. I use some ear defenders rated at reducing 27dB (average) (H=32,M25,L15) of noise + some in-ears.
    Probably need some better ear defenders.

    The thing that always annoyed me most about the movie was just how much noise there was in the background, as was evidenced by the opening shots shown in this very video. Wind, rustling leaves, creaking swing, latch sound from opening the door.... These things happen without triggering a reaction from the aliens and then sounds later on that are just as innocuous do trigger them. They even have whispered conversations which the aliens somehow do not manage to hear but they hear a tiny creak in the floor? It's ridiculous and inconsistent and annoying af.

    With hearing that sensitive, wouldn't these walking sound sponges be able to hear heartbeats? Maybe even the sound of blood flowing through our veins?

    • @phillewis2630
      @phillewis2630 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With hearing that sensitive they would probably be using echolocation. So it wouldn't matter how quiet you are, they could "see" you the way bats and dolphins do.
