You have a great ear, Empress! The reason this song sounds like Off The Wall is because both songs were written by the great Rod Temperton (Caucasian guy from England). Rod was a member of Heatwave, but wrote a lot of other songs for different artists, including MJ’s Off the Wall and Thriller albums.
Rod being from Cleethorpes, England of all places. First time I heard this song was on a b-side by The Questions. th-cam.com/video/Jsv_7TBZ_C0/w-d-xo.html
My father saw Michael Jackson dancing this song in the legendary Studio 54 here in New York City. Michael went crazy when this song came on. Micheal danced with a young 15 year old actress Brooke Shields. This was in 1980 and the song was already a few years old by that point. But, people still loved the song and still played it in clubs all over the world. Yes this song was a banger back in the day !!!
My Sista' you have a very good ear & if you didn't know it you'll be very surprised 2 know the Keyboardist in the group Heatwave wrote just about all the songs on MJ's album Off The Wall when it was released in 1979 & later the album Thriller. Quincy pulled him from the group 2 write most of MJ's songs & a lot more songs he did with a whole lot of Artist thur-out the Industry. Grooveline came out in 1978 of in the summer & Rod Temperton did write this one as well & just about all of the tunes in Heatwave even in 1977 when they firsr came on the scene with there first album Too Hot to Handle with the iconic & unforgettable song we all have heard Always & Forever! And by the way you have a very lovely voice & keep up the good work.
when I first heard this song on a good stereo ( my sister had the album ) I was mesmerized by the killer mix on those drums. Talk about pocket ! wooooosh
Good pick up on MJ connection to Heatwave...the great Rod Temperton is behind both of these songs. He had a great feel for the funk of the late 70s/early 80s. This song always got everyone up to the dance floor!
The keyboard player Rod Temperton produced " Off the wall for Michael Jackson and most of the " Thriller album ". RIP to Rod and some of the members of Heatwave have passed away.
Aye! Some Heatwave! And you got good ear homie because Rod Temperton, who wrote MJ's Off The Wall song, was also a keyboardist and songwriter for Heatwave. This is definitely a groove!
Heatwave is the right the right name for this group. They had some 🔥 tracks. Rod Temperton wrote this along with co writing Off The Wall. Empress those ears 👂 never fail.
The band "Heatwave" what an awesome band.. I remember first becoming aware of them back in 1976 the time of the great heatwave of 76 in the UK, I think this is why they called themselves "Heatwave", their music was absolutely "HOT"..
This is one of the most positive song of the 70s. It has only positive vibes and the whoop whoop is the wax on the spoiler that is burning. It is 100% a favorite at any party. Even if they never heard it before.🎉
Matching Rod Temperton and Johnnie Wilder is remarkable. You can't complete Heatwave until you do "Boogie Nights", "Star of a Story" and "Ain't No Half Steppin".
Nice! The song definitely holds up well almost forty years later. The melodic secondary riff that emerges in the closing sections elevates the song above most of the field from back then.
***(MORE) HEATWAVE TRIVIA TIME!!!*** ....you wanna ride!??? -....well, I told the trivia of "Always & Forever", I guess this one earns a nod, too....this tune was the 1st single from their 1978 Album, "Central Heating"....they had a tune called, "Slip your Disc To This" which was going to be the lead single, but it got pulled, when "Always & Forever" was getting more Radio airplay.... - "The Groove Line" was a big hit peaking #7 Pop & was a sizable Disco hit...but, it was ahead of the Game because of it's slap-like Dance beat; the beat became VERY Popular, and even 'influenced' the beat of CHIC's "Good Times", when 'groove' tracks started becoming more popular, than 'Disco'..... - ....and, as Empress already knew, the Producer, Rod Temperton, became THE central figurehead of 'post Disco', that became popular in 1980; "Off the Wall", "Give Me The Night", "Do You Love What You Feel", & "Rock With You", ALL were produced or guided by Rod.... - "The Groove Line" is a stone cold Dance CLASSIC....so much so, that it became a hit TWICE on the Dance charts after 1978 ; Once in 1999, by Blockster, (Top Ten UK) & 2001 (with a remix by Pete Lorimer of 'Vission / Lorimer') (#15 Dance).....
So glad you loved this pick Empress! This song definitely gets you movin as soon as it starts and is one of my favs from back in the day. Also good ear on the similarities to Off the Wall! I never noticed that and looks like there is a connection based on what the other Empressionists are saying! 😃
Every time they say "Leave your worries behind" I keep thinking they're going to say "cause boogie nights are always the best in town." If you haven't done Boogie Nights, it's a great one.
Wow, that was awesome! Only vaguely familiar with it. Not only a great song but also a great performance. Enjoyed watching those dudes dance -- they're GOOD! 😀 Enjoyed your reaction too Empress, thanks!
This was a International group from all parts of Europe and US.....Rod Temperton produced this group along with being a member.....the reason this song sounds similar to MJ Off The Wall is because Rod Temperton teamed up with Quincy Jones and wrote and produced many songs on that MJ album.....Rod was a hot sort after producer in the late 70s.....as always you seem to be in tune with what was going on decades before your time
Incredible Empress, How you can always pick out the beat from other songs like Michale Jackson Off the Wall in this one that takes a real ear listening and feeling close to the beat, That's why I love your reactions so much. There is an extended version that goes almost 7 minutes, search for it here on YT.
