Simply the most beautiful example of this design I've seen anywhere, with much enhanced functionality. The handle, hinge and cover for the mouth of the feed throat all make the stove a gorgeous design. The extra work in making an air-tight ventilator column makes sense. I was a little perplexed until I saw that the entire point was to close all the seams. I'm going to watch AGAIN, just to marvel at the economy of movement. I took a welding class at age fifty, when I was living on a small ranch with my partner, but by the time I would have started using the skills I'd learned, my brother had a health crisis and I had to deal with that for a decade. Now I'd like to start welding again. This seems like an excellent project to aim for.

love the idea, however, If you add kinda like butterfly valve style damper to the lower inlet pipe (that you can make outta a bit of 1/4 plate, and the same method you used to make the handle of the door.) then close the door to it after you get a fire going... it'll give you more control over the heat as well as increase the amount of heat you can produce.

Good video - liked the design, but here is a shortcut... Making the chamber - Instead of Cutting the square tube lengthwise & welding in a divider and then welding the other half back on; ...you could just drill a row of holes down each side, then insert a sheet of steel from side to side over the holes, then weld down into the hold - voila the piece now divided the square tube with FAR less efforts.

(A) Instead one can do the following: (1) no need to cut the tube lengthwise, (2) determine where the divider is to be located and mark lines down each side of the tube, (3) drill periodic holes (e.g., every inch or two) along that line on each side; diameter of the holes about equal to the thickness of the divider (e.g., 3/16" diam hole for 3/16" plate material), (4) insert the plate into the tube and have it press fit or suspended so plate is directly under the holes on each side, (5) weld INTO the holes - it will melt the plate and sidewalls with the fill metal filling the holes while securely adhering the sides of the plate. Welding through holes is a common welding technique which can often simplify the welding task. Hope that helped. (B) Alternatively, one could just weld a C-channel section to the side of the tube, thus creating a divided tube. (C) Another tip -- (this goes with item A above) I would extend the above center plate so that upon assembly this plate would extend into the interior of the 2nd tube - that creates a burning grate platform. This extended piece of the center plate would be slotted or drilled for airflow. Thus one obtains a nice built in grate which lets air up from the lower section of the tube and up under the burn chamber, while preventing small pieces from blocking the airflow. In his design small pieces fall to the bottom of the vertical tube and can block airflow in. (D) In addition, I would move the legs to the exterior and put a hinged bottom plate. Such as using 2 hinges - one on each side of the bottom plate, first hinge is non-removable, but second hinge has removable pin. You pull the pin, one side opens and this bottom flap pivots on first hinge to open bottom to dump ashes - could even do this while the stove is still hot and burning. Well done Sean. I have had in mind to make my own rocket Stove for a couple of years now and last summer, I took the decision to go ahead with the project. My wife and daughter were using a glut of ripen tomatoes to make a "coulis de tomate" (Tomato sauce) to put in jars for winter use but the many tomatoes we had, needed to be cooked a long time for a relatively small number of jars and used a lot of gas in the process. Your video is very useful and my Rocket Stove will be the carbon copy of yours. Can't wait to cook these various sauces, preserved vegetables and other jams for years to come. Thank you.
It get's hot, quickly. It holds the pot over the flame. It is a work of art. It has a practical application. It is easy to use. It uses scrap wood for fuel. It's is made from junk - recycling, anyone? It was obviously fun to build. What is not to like about this? Critics find something smarter, cheaper, more efficient, more true to the concept, lower cost, easier to make - blah, blah, blah. This is actually pretty damned awesome. Not everything needs to meet every possible angle of perfect efficiency and total scientific design criteria. There is room in life for some things that are just plain fun and quirky. So, crits - go make your own, do a vid about it and make yourselves happy - as if that were possible. Great job, and I freaking like the Hell out of your stove Sean.

Печь была усовершенствована и отобрана на конкурсе печей из 3000 вариантов. идея заключалась в том что в вертикальной трубе стенки теплоизолированы и развивалась большая температура, чем достигалась полное сгорание топлива, в печи нет золы, она тоже сгорала, затем газы нагревали большую бочку и уходили в длинную горизонтальную трубу, выполняющюю роль теплоаккумулятора и лежанки, а зтем остыв, выходили в небольшую вертикальную трубу, практически холодными, печь имеет высокий КПД, позволяя небольшим количеством хвроста и наличию теплоаккумулятора запастись теплом на всю ночь. Печь так называется потому что издаёт похожий на ракету звук.
A fantastic rocket stove, you are a great craftsman, I have just finished mine copying your design. It is fantastc. After demonstrating it to friends, I now have orders for 37more. If you have the means, make one, this guy's version looks to be a very good way to go. If not, show this video to a welder, he can make it for you. This looks like a great stove for a hunting camp too.
All u need is a grinder and welder and steel one stop by harbor freight and one stop by the scrap steel yard and about two three hours and you will have a stove
Nice job. Quick, easy, fool proof set-up. To the point, no crazy, extravagant ideas.. I like it. Haven't built one yet, but believe I'd build it just like yours. Good job..
I never understand why everyone builds these without putting a surface between the flue and the cookware. It just ends up sooting the cookware tremendously. What is needed is an "inverted pie pan" shape welded on top. It's shape will capture and help hold the heat, and if made wider than the largest pan to be used, will prevent soot from collecting on any cookware used. Since none of these small stoves is integrating a secondary burn chamber, they are barely, if at all, more efficient than any other stove, and just a bit better than an open fire.
If you put a little bit of dish soap on the bottom the soot wipes away easy. If you want to get the ash out, you dump it after it cools. These stoves are extremely effective and easy to build. You can measure the temperature at the pot and the temperature at the air intake to prove that it is far better than just a pot on an open fire.

I can't believe the effort you went to for the air chute, you could have slide a piece of flat bar in there and put a few plug weld in from the side to hold it there.
GREAT DESIGN. I'll be incorporating your ideas into my design. You taught me a few tricks. Try this.. Put some liquid detergent on the outside of your pot before putting it on the fire. Black soot sticks to detergent and later it'll wipe off easily. I welded for years. You'll find that you'll get a nicer looking , smoother weld, when MIG welding, if you push the weld rather than pull it. Your heat setting is very good, but hold your gun a bit more upright and shorten the stick out a bit. Stick welding is different..... "if there's slag, you drag".

You can get a welding rod into a narrow crevice, but the shroud of a mig is quite wide, so therefore you cannot get it near enough to the seam to form a proper weld as the gas would be lost and the wire wobbling around.
I agree. Live sound is just what is required. When I was training in engineering the welding touched on was oxy/acetylene with rods. What we just saw is Mig or Tig welding?

I now have a rocket stove I made from cinder mortar. Previous iterations have proven to be little more than smoke bombs in roughly stove shape.

I piece of tube steel is not junk - recycling. It is too heavy to bring in a backpack. Other than that. pretty good.
I would say a good emergency survival stove though, even if you can’t backpack it. You could use it to make drinking water too.

Definitely would buy one of these for emergencies. Especially if propane and butane ran out. There is wood branches all over my property.

I made one yesterday out of 4 1/2 box tube 17” high and the wood chute was 10” on the long side, I put the intake below the chute also, works well

Why did you mig weld in some areas and stick weld in others. Was is heat issues or reaching the area that needed welding. Thanks
You can get a welding rod into a narrow crevice, but the shroud of a mig is quite wide, so therefore you cannot get it near enough to the seam to form a proper weld as the gas would be lost and the wire wobbling around.

I agree. Live sound is just what is required. When I was training in engineering the welding touched on was oxy/acetylene with rods. What we just saw is Mig or Tig welding?
