    Wow. Making me one . Also on rough ground sticks could be put into tubing legs for more stability using bigger pot or frying pan. This is great just found this. An 83 year old camper.

    Practice your welding, Ed. A little leading angle will flatten out your beads, which will eliminate some of your grinding, and you'll have less melt through, like on your outside corner. I'm not an expert, its just what I do for a living.

    This is a nice looking stove. One important suggestion, It looks like it will tip forward due to the front foot being set back. I would suggest adding another pice of the same 1x1 stock to form a “T” with the front foot. Have it stick out 3-4” towards the front.

    I really like this design Ed because it orients the fuel feeding chamber and the air intake in the same direction. I want to make one as an emergency device in case things go TU so I can actually cook in my fireplace if needed. The only feature I'm thinking about adding is a shelf on the back where I can place a heat powered stove fan to blow the heat back into the room. I also appreciate the way you oriented the cooking grate because you could easily slide an extension piece in there for a taller flu if desired. Thanks for making this video brother.

    I see just 1 improvement you can make to this design and that is to add on 2 additional stabilization legs on the opposite end of the cooking platform in the and in the opposite direction for stability to prevent tipping in case a pot of water is heavy or there is a bump. this would pretty much prevent any chance of tipping over.

    Nice job. From what I see you won't have any problems with the steel getting too hot and melting running it this way. And yes, a damper of some kind would give you heat control. The only thing I can see is it would be top heavy if you had too much weight sitting on top of it. (Try it on uneven ground with a heavy pot of water... that'll help your footprint design on any newer models). Awesome job.

    Your welding is just fine! Flaps for air control do work but are not required. Sometimes just making sure to get the draft going good before packing fuel in works.

    • @EdMakesStuff
      @EdMakesStuff  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment, I think a flap over the fuel infeed tube would help with the drawer as the air would only have the bottom tube to go through. I suppose with or without each have their own pros and cons.

    @timothydeane8139 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    REALLY like this idea. wish i could use one. not a good idea to paint before removing rust.. it may cover the rusting but it does not remove the problem. rust has a tendency to cut through paint. need to do a rust remover then paint to protect from future rust. heat resistant paint is best here.

  • @thebackyardwelder5267
    @thebackyardwelder5267 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Great build however.......
    I've built a few of these in various ways. The one ive found best at this size is to fit a simple hinged flap over the feed pipe to massively increase the draw of air. This produces a far higher temperature and much cleaner/efficient burn. Second thing is to fit an adjustable flap over the air intake pipe. With the feed flap closed you can adjust the amount of air entering which will adjust the temperature at the top. Careful not to starve the fire though.

    • @EdMakesStuff
      @EdMakesStuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      After I had finished it, I realised a little door over the fuel infeed would help it burn better and create more draw. I didn't think of a door over the air intake. I have a wood stove in my house and that has 2 adjustable vents on the bottom of the doors and when the vents are fully open the fire roars. I'm guessing it would work on the same principle as that?

    Awesome welding job, but it'd act more rocket stovish if you insulated it better and be much more efficient...

    Would it not have been better to place the bottom supports at the very end of the bottom tube to reduce the risk of it toppling over backwards if you place a heavier pot on it ? Other than that it looks good

    How long does it burn before you have to clean out the ashes? Seems like it would fill up quick. It’s nice though,, and a neat clean set up.

    great easy to make imm going to build 1 tommorow and ill put a length against its back close it up and weld to chimley put pipe conection on back side off it top and bottom so can heat say a 40 liter container offf water for hot water for washing up and showers so have free cooling cost and hot water very cheep to build and could have 3 orr more to do all our cooking on

  • @captaina7433
    @captaina7433 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The center of gravity of the pot is on the other side of the fulcrum. So the heavier the item you are cooking, the less stable it is. It will eventually tip over if the weight is too much.

    Not being critical, you lay in the weld with a stick, you push a weld with a mig.
    Your welds look nice. Try the push from your right hand to the left starting on the right.
    Weave or swirl creates better penetration you may find your amps could be dropped a little.
    Ive not built a rocket stove but agree with others.
    The pot is on the wrong end, updraft would be lost as the riser is affectively shorter and gas is coming back out.
    Put a flap to block the fuel feed.
    With a slide gate you could create a throttle on the air inlet for cooking.
    Im just an old fitter who spent too much time on boilers.
    Nice project thou.

      I have tried the push method and i just cant seem to get it right, I tried a basic fillet weld on some quarter inch plate and it had a lot of spatter, The bead looked OK and the joint was strong. I have just about got the hang of pulling so i find it a bit awkward pushing with positioning and torch angle etc.. My welder has preset settings(1.2.3) so it is basically all the power, half the power, or very little. I think i need to have a few days just practising on various bits of scrap to get a better feel for it. Thanks for the suggestions on the stove, This was the first one i have made and i didn't do much research on them beforehand, just seen pictures. A second one is going to be a future project but i need to come up with final plan first.
      Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching ED

      Nathaniel Lavery like fitting boiler making is a dying art. Few guys I've worked with hated being referred to as a welder.
      You be about my age. Welding not my forte but was taught a lot by a boilermaker "Shorty" he would be over 100 now.
      His welds were beautiful. At times he would use one of those music timer tic tocs "metronome" i think its called.
      Most of our welding called for vertical up, for some reason mig was frowned upon by the defence department for pressure welding.
      Where we could Tig was used. I guess at the end of the day its the position and situation you find yourself having to perform the task.
      Too many times I've been feet up an incline lying on my back head under a steam 4" pipe with a 1/4" wall only to get water in the mix using an oxy accetalene.

      you can weld any direction with MIG. 14 years of rust repairs and custom exhausts

    • @mickmac8300
      @mickmac8300 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ace Futura big difference to welding exhaust pipe and or a weld that can hold 200psi steam pressure.
      Im sure there are youtube videos on pressure vessels blowing up.
      Its like anything. "The is no wrong way just the best way and every other way."

    I swear I'm not one of those people who trash talk.. but.. I genuinely have advice for anyone who likes this... I teach survival and have been teaching how to make these types of fires for years. You just....dig a hole, then another a few inches to a foot away at an angle, dig through the bottoms of them to meet them forming a sort of 'U' shape.. done.
    Nothing to carry, make, weld, pack..etc.. same effect, safe, extremely efficient, easy to put out by back filling the dirt you dug it out with.
    Honestly no offense, but why bother with all that when I can make it in the dirt in 5 minutes...and clean up in 1 minute.. and off I go?

    the fuel intake should be lower than the chimney, make the chimney at least 15cm taller than the wood intake to prevent fumes getting out through the wrong hole, the air must be sucked out vertically faster

    Does the length of the tubes matter? Also, what size tubing is that? A list of materials would be helpful. Thanks for the video, it is great!

    • @EdMakesStuff
      @EdMakesStuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I made the burn chamber (upright piece) 12", but i think it would have been better if it was slightly longer,
      The tubing is 3" x 3" with a 2mm wall thickness
      on piece is 12" one piece is 10" and the other piece is 8" all them measurements are on the longest sides if that make sense. The steel for the feet is 1" box section about 8" long, & the four pieces on the top for the pot to sit on 30mm x 2mm and each of them is 3" long.

    Cool build I'm thinking for anything but boiling water you would do well using a double boiler type rig on top so it's steam heating the cooking surface not open flame I think it would provide a much more even heating surface. Good use of rusty Square stock either way.

    another idea for your v2.0....instead of welding, make it collapsible, with flexible flanges to squeeze into the openings (i'm talking out of my, um, HAT hear...no idea how to do this, but, I think it's possible) - the main idea I had was to make each section a slightly different size, so they nest when not in use.
    like the simplicity of this. probably scalable?

    • @EdMakesStuff
      @EdMakesStuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I get what you mean & I like the idea of a collapsible stove. I have an idea for one the doesn't require a welder, Just a drill and a grinder but haven't got a piece of steel for it yet, I try to make things from scrap whenever possible to keep cost down & that way if I mess it up badly I wont lose much. I will get round to it at some point just not sure when.
      Thanks for your ideas and thanks for watching ED
