I don't know about attractive, the thing I think they need more is to be INTERESTING. I actually like the idea someone mentioned somewhere else in this comment section about going full on into the freakshow characters by going fully into the Alien stuff and making them completely inhuman. Instead, we have the most cookie cutter looking characters possible, some even look like they stop mid design and shipped that.
The problem with Gigantic wasn't that they were charging $20 for it, it was that it was a borderline-unplayable mess at launch and stayed that way for weeks. Seriously at points it was a fun challenge to see if you, the last person in the match that hadn't been frozen in place by the server, could get past the glitched unkillable bot replacements to close out the match before you too were booted and the match failed entirely.
How to kill a multiplayer FPS : not allowing custom private servers, not allowing LAN, not having offline with bots, not allowing modding. Even today i can still setup my ut2k4 server with nearly 200GB of mods and have 31 friends join me in LAN or online. Gaming is evolving backward.
Yep. Cheating is so rampant now, that having private servers with their own admins is almost mandatory. That's the real reason all these multiplayer games are struggling. Banning a wave of cheaters once every 6 months isn't that helpful. Need people actively policing.
Maybe 10% of my gaming circle plays games like this period, and they've already got games they like. OW1 really spoiled me on hero shooters. They got so much right that it really just put a spotlight on these newer games who haven't seemed to learn anything.
I wouldn't say worse. The gameplay itself seems solid but that just isn't good enough. Suicide squads gameplay was pretty bad if I'm honest and the missions just felt repetitive and even most of the boss fights were waiting for the boss to get hit by special bullet damage and wait again.
@@cosmancho2959 i didn't plan to waste my money on it and from what you said that seems like the correct decision. Good or average just isn't good enough if you want to stand out with a live service game, especially if you have no other hooks aside from gameplay.
I dont think so.. Its a lot more simple, it has nothing to do with "emotions", its a saturated market. Games like Valorant, Overwatch and Apex Legends dominate this niche market, there is just no more room for competition. People who are into this kind of games are already invested into those stablished games (for years). Helldivers succeeded because it didn't have to go against niche stablished franchise. It’s crazy that every single person could see it was going to fail based on the very first reveal, yet the studio is going to be baffled at why it isn’t successful. I swear almost every game studio has no clue what their audience actually wants.
Why would I play a game with character designs I find absolutely boring? First impressions matter a lot, and if a game doesn't capture an audience at a glance it's just not going to work out.
Not another live service MTX farm! What a waste of resources and developer time. It's been done to exhaustion, the market is long since saturated, I wish they'd done something even slightly innovative.
The character designs are immediately offputting and not original. You’ve got generic wizard lady, Yondu from Wish, Temu Soldier 76, and Drax from SHEIN all front and center.
There's nothing wrong with making a quirky game for a niche audience. In fact I applaud it. Developers and publishers just need to accept that the audience will likely remain niche in size and budget accordingly. Some games do break out of their focused player base, but they are usually unique in someway or they have an original approach. There's nothing we haven't seen before in Concord and the character designs look purposely unappealing. Who's going to spend money on foppish and dowdy digital apparel? Maybe a percentage of that niche group. Publishers need to ask if that's enough to keep the game alive.
Or boring characters. The audience for hero shooters is limited and the market already has some games of this type. So you need to draw the limited audience away from the existing games. For that it doesn't just need to be better but so much better that people are willing to give up their current game that they might have invested hundreds of hours in. And nithing in this game stands out enough. The gameplay doesn't look that much different from most games of this type, the characters are really bland and what I've seen of game modes from people playing the beta you can either play matches valorant/csgo style or overwatch style 5v5 mission based matches.

The problem is that it tries to beat Overwatch at its own game but brings absolutely nothing new or unique to the table. The characters may not be bad but they're also nothing special. Why would players in this genre even look at it when Overwatch is free and has an existing large community?
@@SaHaRaSquad i see your point, but what me (and some other people) was first expecting was a game like the guardian of the galaxy, a more akin to a adventure game revolving around a group of space friends in space shenanigans with some light-hearted jokes (even if the marvel humor is kinda oversaturated)
Concords characters look like theyre from the dove body positivity in gaming commercial. The worst character designs ive seen in any media. Its a parody of modern gaming.
Overwatch is down bad right now but the one thing you can give them credit for is the art style and character designs are top tier as well as the waifus. Concord is just ugly to look at especially the characters
I wouldn't say it's ugly. The characters are very detailed but graphics isn't everything and the art style just blows. It would have been way better when they went a lot more artistic and gave it a unique style. This looks a bit too realistic but when you go realistic the designs don't work that well. Go something like a cell shaded style a la borderland or go all out with the colours. Just something to grab the attention of people and to stand out.
They got a new character in Overwatch named Juno with a trailer TODAY that I know is gonna lead to a glut of fanart by Monday. Instantly cute and striking design.
You can usually tell the popularity of a game according to how much "art" they have of it on rule 34. But the thing is ain't nobody touching this trash on rule 34. Like I'm serious. I can't even find a tag for it.
Also crazy: the finals got prioritized over arc raiders (i belive the game is called) and then helldivers 2 became super popular. You have to create your own game and "hope" for the best. Or at least be very early. Remember pubg, fortnite changed course after the success of pubg. Fort was suppossed to be some tower defense like game, i believe? They quickly implemented battle royale and made it free. You can't come 5 years later and make the same thing but with a different color.
Sometimes the trouble with 'just getting your head down and working' on something, is that if we don't look up often enough to see the weather change - we get wet.
You're overthinking it. The character design is shit. There's dozens of hero shooters out there, that means the world/characters are the biggest selling point. The gameplay might be the best hero shooter out there but if no one likes the characters it won't be played, so no one will find out. Pronouns in bio is automatically disqualifying.

I did not, but I bought the game blind the week it came out in 2016. I was a Mercy main though, probably had like 800 hours on her. I think Mcree was a close second followed by Hanzo.
And this is why I can’t take the argument “the characters are gross” seriously it’s just reeking of incel, white cis man is upset he’s not being represented for the first time in history vibes. Like the characters are all easily distinguishable between one another, they aren’t extremely catchy but they are unique and stand out from one another.
Seriously! I'm just waiting for new new content, don't get me wrong I came back for each Warbond and played for like a week or so with my buddies, but then we moved on. Once you have your set up, the resource grind for the T4 upgrades and the game loop, while fun for a bit, can just get tiring after 200 hours or so.
The gameplay was serviceable. The issue with all these multiplayer only shooters is that they lack an onboarding side of their game, especially for new IPs, to get new potential players to at least try it. Concord is a new IP, with no campaign, no community built around the company like Blizzard had when they released Overwatch, ect. Not only that they're pretty much using a F2P model for a P2P game And after all of that, the game is simply ugly and appeals to no one outside of upper class San Fransisco/LA/Montreal types.
Concord is the type of game you will only pay money to give it to a streamer(gift) so they can show their Steam library and the live chat can make fun of the streamer for having that in their library.
8:07 the truth is there aren't a lot of people willing to pay for hero shooters, when most choices in the market are free you have it where they have plenty of free options. I bet my bottom dollar if there was another high quality free to play game exactly if not slightly worse than Hell Divers 2, you wouldn't see a Hell Divers 2 released for 40 USD but free.
I mean I know we here the washed never were been wannabe commentators say the hero shooter genera is over saturated. But it’s like Overwatch, and a bunch of thing people that don’t play them think are hero shooters but are not. The majority of people who like this game jumped in with overwatch, and they will stick to that game no matter the disrespect Blizzard gives them.
Helldivers 2 is a neche game format as it is a co-op focused, objective based 3rd person sci-fi shooter with a variety of enemies, guns and equipment. Concord is in a very crowded market with other hero shooters and shooters in general. Helldivers made a distinct premise and set-up that is different from anything else on the market which players initially gravitated too as a breath of fresh air. Sony and other big companies/publishers are fighting over a limited market now that there are dozens of similar shooters vying for the public's attention.
concord is probably the most sterile corpo DEI piece of mid trash ive seen so far. char designs look like they clicked Random and chose whatever filled the most diversity points. I dont think there will ever be a game where including pronouns (let alone for a robot lmao) will never NOT be seen as blatant ideological colonization.
Concord is an Overwatch clone, right down to the UI, but with 'modern day' sensibilities that customers never liked. Which is why no one actually wanted to play it.
We're in a point where everything is designed by comitee, throwing wants and tastes of their pretended audiences into a blender, and trying to have us pay for whatever disgusting blob comes out of it. Suits look at movie charts and read "the people who spend the most in movies are aged between 19 and 35", and make movies that try to average out that audience (ignoring the fact that peoples from these age groups are _completely different_), which inevitably fail. The same goes for games... Concord looks visually impressive but, at the same time, completely bland and nondescript. Why? Because it's designed to satisfy the wants of an imaginary "average". However, people are not average. If you pick up a person who likes fish and another who likes strawberries, making strawberry-filled fish isn't going to please both, it's going to disgust them.
I mean, $40 USD ($60 CAD for me) is already welcomed if it means we might actually get a pve experience like we were promised and then blatantly lied to about and denied in Overwatch. The cosmetics are just a cherry on top. I'll spend $60 on a new game over some dumb skins and emotes any day, especially since all the new Overwatch characters in Overwatch "2" just recycle existing game elements then slap on a fresh coat of animation
"There WILL BE pve" is not the same as "There IS pve at launch." Overwatch's creators lied and that is made by a billion dollar studio. There isn't a reason to believe this game will meet expectations any more than other games with a half done roadmap. Save your money until the PVE actually is released.
I tried yesterday, but was a terrible experience. No Tutorial, no place to test the characters before play. How I'm supposed to understand the flow if I don't know how to play? Frustrating, a shoot in they own foot.
As a character designer, I feel the game really just lacks in the character aspect, the deigns silhouettes of each of the heros are some of the most boring ive ever seen, ESPECIALLY compared to overwatch, making the heros of the game look way more like background characters in guardians of the galaxy, rather than a team of heros in there own right. Theres just not enough pull in any of them, no niche or provocative traits that makes me question what there story is, it all just feels very cookie cutter, and Im not surprised it failed.
I think the question "why would i play this over what im already playing?" Is something a lot of studios never bother asking.

The problem is, no matter how good this game might end up being, that statement at the 5:10 mark is NOT a legal guarantee - meaning that I pay my $40 and expect free seasonal content only for Sony to pull the rug and go, "Nah, you are paying now." Yeah, don't see why I would risk it. I'll keep my money and put it towards an indie game where I know what I'm going to get when I purchase with no expectation on either side of further monetization!
By the way, not sure why the PC open beta would mean anything. Remember, this is a SONY product. Meaning, that a bunch of folks who possibly could have gotten it will probably get locked out due to the nonsense PSN requirement like what hit Helldivers 2. Who would trust Sony on PC today?

I dunno, they could lean further into the alien freaks and make some pretty unique characters and playstyles. You like dual wielding? What about a floating squid alien that octuple wields? I don’t know how that would work in terms of balance, but fuck it, 8 plasma pistols. I want something unique, but aside from the Guardians of the Galaxy-esque character designs, there’s not much to be excited about in Concord.
The art direction is the problem. This is what the corporations want us to like, but it's not what most people WANT.
Not another live service MTX farm! What a waste of resources and developer time. It's been done to exhaustion, the market is long since saturated, I wish they'd done something even slightly innovative.
Let the "modern audience" have it.
Is it well-made? Yes. Did anyone ask for another hero shooter? I sure didn't.

The issue with all these multiplayer only shooters is that they lack an onboarding side of their game, especially for new IPs, to get new potential players to at least try it. Concord is a new IP, with no campaign, no community built around the company like Blizzard had when they released Overwatch, ect. Not only that they're pretty much using a F2P model for a P2P game

Concord is an Overwatch clone, right down to the UI, but with 'modern day' sensibilities that customers never liked. Which is why no one actually wanted to play it.
Balance is horrendous, characters look ridiculous, and the maps are too big
I didn't even realize the warlock has Icarus Dash that puts you into 3rd person. Sound familiar?
So you are the so called "modern audience" fake gaming journalist like IGN and Kotaku keep yammering about.
you won't, still no pve element just cutscenes
"There WILL BE pve" is not the same as "There IS pve at launch." Overwatch's creators lied and that is made by a billion dollar studio. There isn't a reason to believe this game will meet expectations any more than other games with a half done roadmap. Save your money until the PVE actually is released.
I put this game on ignore on Steam. The ugly characters and the pronouns made it an automatic no for me.
