    The format is definitely better in the sense that I was more surprised with the final shots and seeing them before they appeared in the b-roll felt better!

    Hands down the "baby cam" footage was the best! Your son's expressions coupled with the activity around him was really interesting viewing.
    I want to get a Ricoh GR. I am leaning towards the 28mm, because 28mm is better for indoors and for photographing my family walking next to me. No issues getting close to my friends and family. 40mm seems better for photographing strangers.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a good argument! 28mm works great for any situation with the family. The images will feel more intimate and personal because you have to be physically close. Thanks for commenting Bradley! : )

    Love the format Samuel. Felt like you took us along with you. Best editing too! I think I'm having trouble with 40mm as I should be more intentional in my framing. Still loving the GRiiix. Great work as always!

      Thanks Hendrix! It's a weird focal length that takes some time getting used to it but after a while you will never miss a 35mm or 50mm again : ) well at least that is how I see it at the moment.

    Wow, a new one. I must have watched the lot. My GRiii arrived yesterday, so I've been setting it up, and made a few(poor) photographs. I'm very impressed. I had a Fuji X Pro 2 before, the Rico is far more intuitive. It's helped by the fact that you can see a live preview, so every time you adjust the settings you can see the result. I feel like I can understand the exposure triangle properly for the first time ever! I'm old now, and I couldn't hack carrying the Fuji, plus lenses, around with me. So I decided to make some changes. I'd been doing street stuff with the Fuji and it really appeals to me. So, I watched your channel, and a couple more. and the rest is history. So, thank you very much. Great presentation, and content, and you seem like a really nice man. So thanks again.

    Thanks this was a fun video! I did not miss the "pov" footage of what happened immediately before and after each shot. It was decidedly not needed, and this new format was a well-paced and enjoyable video to watch. I've only ever found the POV footage of how a shot happened interesting if the photographer talks to / interviews the subject and this reveals something significant about the photo. If you're just walking past and snapping a photo without a meaningful interaction, it doesn't need POV footage to accompany the photo.

    I really enjoyed this format! It's really interesting how the GR IIIx has a bit of that 28mm look to it but at the same time does not feel all that wide.

    • @oetproductions8101
      @oetproductions8101 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is technically a 26mm but 39 in full frame equivalent. I think that means it’s gonna look and behave like a 26 with a 40 field of view but I work at a grocery store so who knows really.

      Yes I think POV clips that show how a photographers moves and acts before taking a shot can be interesting but when the images look almost exactly like you thought they would because you saw the same scene in the POV clip, then it looses a bit of that wonder and magic a photograph can have.

    I went from an XF10 (28mm) to a GRIIIX.
    When I got the XF10 (I bought it because I couldn’t justify the £900 for the GRIII) I got used to the focal length but being an natural 50mm guy, I jumped at trading in the XF10 to get the GRIIIX.
    I do wish they’d fix the autofocus as, even after the latest update, it still tries to focus on the ground in front of the subject something the XF10 wasn’t prone too.

    After resisting for years, I bought a GRIII a few months before the GRIIIx was announced. I wish I had waited - 28mm equivalent is too wide for my purposes. I’m also still not convinced that tiny lens can resolve enough for that sensor. Now I’m going to take a bath unloading the III. I think I’ll just stick with my X100V for pocketable EDC.

  • @umareta

    This new format feels fresh and the pace does not feel laggy in my opinion. Looking forward to the next ones!
    As for the GR IIIx, I finally managed to borrow & test it for a day. Gotta say that using 40mm feels more natural on the street, but then I remembered my recent trip to Venice where the streets/alleys are very tight and thought that probably places like that are where the 28mm is most relevant.

    I switched from the GRii for the GRiiiX because I've always struggled a bit with 28mm (specifically outdoors). However, I actually dislike the GRiiiX immensely. It's not the 40mm. As a 35/50mm shooter, I love that focal length. But not having the on-board flash in favour of IBIS doesn't really work for me (which surprised me), I also find the way the camera handles automatic exposure strange. I often find I'm either losing all the details in the shadows or absolutely blowing out the highlights (I like to shoot P mode with Ricohs!) but often find myself having to switch to manual or quickly adjust the aperture. I dunno! I may sell it and stick with my xpro2 and XT3. Sorry Ricoh! I still love you and keep 'em coming! I wanted the 40mm/50mm fixed lens camera forever! And ya'll had the courage to do it!

    Good for you getting to the city Samuel. Although I have been looking forward to your #farmlife series feat. poultry :-) My Leica Minilux, not the Minilux Zoom (author looks down his nose) had a 40mm Sumarit. Great little street camera, although a bit boxy. I shot it professionally at weddings with TriX, alongside two Nikon F100s circa Y2K loaded with Portra 400. My current fav walk-around lens is the Sigma 45mm DGDN on a Leica SL. As fun as 28mm is, I find a more surgical approach to be beneficial.

    Wonder what focus modes you use for street Samuel? I often use auto as it seems to work for street. I find the snap focus a handy little feature of this camera but sometimes find my shots are out of focus. Especially if the light is low and the camera is using a low aperture. I nearly always use shutter priority for street. Another great video.

    A 26mm on aps-c really is equivalent to shooting a 40mm on full frame. I’m not sure what you mean that it “feels wider”.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes equivalent field of view but not equivalent depth of field and distortion. The 26mm Lens of the GR IIIx has the depth of field of a 26mm lens. Imagine using a 26mm lens on a full frame camera and then cropping in to get the same frame as a 40mm. Compared to a 40mm lens on full frame the frame will look very similar but you can feel something is different with the cropped image because it still has the distortion of the 26mm lens. That is why I never enjoyed using the 35mm Crop Mode on the Q2 for example. It never felt like my 35mm full frame lenses. It always felt like a 28mm even though I had a much tighter or cropped frame. Maybe this is just something you notice if you regulary use the same focal lengths on both full frame and APS-C :)

      @@SamuelStreetlife you’re confusing field of view with depth of field.
      I shoot full frame and micro4/3 cameras. I shoot 35mm at f/4 on FF, and 17mm at f/2 on micro4/3. There is no sense of “cropping a wider view” or any difference in depth of field or distortion.

    You can't think 28 when you are working with a 45... That's why primes improve your skills 😅✨👌🏼

      You mean 40mm I think : ) I know every focal length has it's own look and character but I have to slightly disagree. I think 28mm is right at the brink of being a wide angle lens but also could be considered a normal lens if you use it in a way where you avoid perspective lines or prominent forground and background elements then a 28mm image can sometimes even look like a 50mm image. You can't force the dynamic qualities of a 28mm image with a 40mm or 50mm lens but you can move a few steps back and get similar compositions than you can with a 28mm. Most of my GR IIIx shots in this video could also be done with a 28mm but the background would look a little further away. But that is what I actually like about 40mm that I can still create images with the depth and layers I can get with a 28mm but I can bring the background closer to me which creates a different feel (you could say it feels more realistic).

    I'd wish Samuel also got some "human expression firmware fix", he kept smirking like an idiot and couldn't concentrate at all in the Fuji XH livestream, continuously commenting on the presenters (and bordering on racist comments). "Oh this looks so stupid" (for the optional external cooling) Whatever - being able to shoot continuously on high frame rates and demanding codecs without overheating in a production is not about looks...
