That's why I'm glad I wasn't able to ride it. I'm happy at the people behind it for taking risks, but the whole ride just focusing on one conflict kinda makes for a pretty boring ride, IMO. But maybe that's just my bias talking.

The ending doesn't even seem to make any sense. Why is the witch in the mine? Why does it just end there with no explanation? Does she kill you with that gem? Why, again, would that be the final scene, when it's nothing like the films at all? And the fact that she even asks if you're enjoying the "ride" makes it a downright bizarre narrative

I think the originals were so scary because the designers of the ride really did succeed in making people experience the tale from Snow White’s point of view, but rather than the guests thinking it was Snow White’s POV, they instead made themselves the protagonist, so the scary aspects of the ride felt like they were directed at you and, thus, were more viscerally received.

    • @BlazeHeartPanther

XD my thoughts too. It needed more animated films besides the princesses. But since they made an area mostly consisting Dumbo, I can forgive them. I'm obsessed with that movie XD

    • @MrMrMrprofessor
      @MrMrMrprofessor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I remember when New Fantasyland was announced, and while the idea of an expansion was praised, the whole "princess-centric" idea was not very well received. By the sound of the original plans, there was originally going to be walkthrough meet and greet style attractions for Belle, Aurora, Cinderella, and Snow White herself, along with a pixie hollow area. Fans voiced their concerns about the over abundance of Princess meets, and over the next few years, Disney kept redesigning the land, eventually cutting Pixie Hollow, and all of the walk through meet and greets except for Belle's, which became Enchanted Tales with Belle. Of course, the other princess meet and greets were all condensed into Princess Fairytale Hall, which sealed the fate of the Snow White ride. I'm sad that Snow is gone, but I AM happy that Disney did not go crazy with all of the princess stuff, as much as I enjoy the characters.

I don't think that was really the sound of some kid crying, because that footage was recorded by WidenYourWorld, who worked as a ride operator at Disney World during the late eighties and early nineties and heavily documented things in the park that he thought were worth preserving. I disagree. It looks cartoony, sure, but...not enough. In fact, it's in that gap between "charmingly cartoony" and "realistic". The textures, colors, and such are realistic -- at least enough for a passing glance -- but combine those with the proportions, and it feels...wrong... I believe that's the Uncanny Valley.

My parents took me on it when I was 3 and I remember it being frightening to me but going on it with my family so it didn't cause me to panic. Our trip would have been 93 or 94, so I'm not sure whether it was the toned down version or not, but wow I recall going on and expecting the happy Snow White parts and not the scary ones so it definitely was a little jarring. As a kid I was scared by the witch in the animated movie so seeing her in person probably had me hiding in my face in parents shoulder. I appreciate it now though, cause it is a great dark ride.
I'm just glad it wasn't an option to go on the Pinocchio ride (since I don't think there was one in WDW) because as a kid I was horrified by that movie more than any other one with the children becoming donkeys and crying for their mothers and getting their clothes ripped off then thrown into crates. WTF Disney?! I still don't choose to rewatch that movie because of how sinister that scene was. You gotta love how disturbingly depicted the Pinocchio ride recreates the horrifying scenes but doesn't show Pinocchio becoming a real boy in the finale part (he's just a puppet still). Uh, how bout prioritizing the important parts more?

But it's not just the fact that the objects _have_ eyes. I grew up watching old black & white cartoons by Disney, Max Fleischer, etc., where objects with eyes was pretty commonplace. What's disturbing here is their unexpected twisted, frozen expressions of terror, combined with the horrific audio. It's kinda like how in the graveyard scene of the Haunted Mansion, the reactions of the freaked-out night watchman and his shivering dog are more fear-inspiring than the rather goofy ghosts in the scene.

Ah, I see what you mean. While I'm fine with almost all parts of Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie, I will admit that there are parts that scare me (even to this day). The Rippers outside of Mad Monster Mansion are a good example. Not only do they growl and chase you, but they are way larger than Banjo. The S'Hards, Cursed Beehives, and Minjos of the sequel have a similar effect.

According to the book "Mouse Under Glass," at one point in WDW's planning, they intended to have the scary Fantasyland dark ride be themed to "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," but later decided to have the Fantasyland dark rides be themed after the same movies as at Disneyland. I wonder if some of the scariness of "Sleepy Hollow" was still on their minds when they were designing WDW's "Snow White."

We had to lisent to the Witch's laugh for soooo loooong!!! Hahaha!!

I’ve been to Disneyland since it was updated again. It’s a lot less scary now even. When the witch turns around when she’s in front of the mirror, she’s now far away across the room, whereas before she was right up in your face. That was always the scariest part.

No, you're not alone! When I went to Disneyland as a kid in the 1970's I never rode on Snow White because of that word (scary) in parentheses in the list of attractions, and seeing now what it was like I'm glad I didn't (I scared easily as a child). Now, however, I wish I could go on the old one, particularly the one in the Magic Kingdom!

The originals seem like they would've been a lot of fun to go on! However, I can see why they toned them down, seeing as Fantasyland is typically the area with the highest concentration of little ones, who are easily frightened. It's a shame that WDW's was shuttered for a freaking meet and greet, though. Damn shame.

When I first rode the Disneyland version about 45 years ago, at the age of 5 or 6, while you were waiting in line, you could clearly hear the witch's scream of death over and over again, every time the exit crash doors opened - I can't imagine any adult or child not figuring out, well before getting to the front of the line, it was going to be a very scary ride! And it didn't disappoint! While it's toned down from the original version, thank goodness it's at least still there, with that terrific facade and some nice effects. I think it's an absolute crime that the bigger, more elaborate version in Florida, with that nice entry past the wishing well and the happy ending, was bulldozed for another meet and greet. It's the first feature the studio made, the one that ensured the success of all the features and projects that followed, and an amazing film, an unprecedented artistic achievement - it deserved the classy (and appropriately scary!) tribute to the actual movie via a great dark ride there. At least something more than a rollercoaster all about the dwarves (which is fine, but please don't tell me there's only room for one Snow White themed ride in all of DisneyWorld, when we have multiple areas and attractions re-themed around pirates).
Anyway, great video with terrific footage and details - nice that you put all this together for all the people who never got to see these versions. I really appreciate it!

I went to WDW in '77 with my mother. Snow White was(and STILL is) my favorite Disney Princess, so I HAD to ride the ride! After "The Transformation Scene" I closed my eyes! My mom did get a little mad because of time wasted. Thanks for showing me what I missed! I wish that it was still operating because I would this time keep my eyes opened!
