I own one, that has been fitted with a Tung Sol 6L6GC-STR matched quad. I really like it, especially the Crunch channel, and I think the 6L6GC tubes improve the Clean channel. It is my main amp. I also have a 3120 and a 6534+ ... Satriani is cool but I have never listened to him that much
he more than likely taught your favorite guitar player how to solo. his student tree is ridiculous Also, check out his song “Hordes of Locust” if you don’t like that song, you might not be cut out for rock/metal guitar
Had mine since 2005 and it's a killer 3 channel amp. I have a matched set of JJ's 6L6's and it slays. Heavy beast though so I don't gig with it too much anymore...
Greetings, and Happy New Year 2025! I'm a new subscriber; I've got alot of parousing of your videos. You're an extremely talented "Renaissance man" guitar tone guru. I'm about to re-aquire my JSX after being in storage for years. 10 years ago I had a sheet of paper put together by a virtuoso depicting all of the knob settings to emulate EVH; but it's gone and I'll be lost. Is there any way you could let me (or us) know how to get his holy grail tones? The people I knew at the time all swore "Overdrive the 6L6 power tubes, then tailor the 12AX7 preamp tubes". Do you have any advice for me, Sir? I'm playing a Fender Strat, alder body with Hot Rails pups. I'll soon be playing a Swamp Ash Strat with the Liquifier neck pup and Crunchlab bridge pup, as I'm obsessed with John Petrucci's tones as well. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us!
Thank you for your kind words! The JSX is quite hard to dial in due to the active EQ, so I'd suggest you start with everything on noon. If you wanna crank the poweramp you have to compensate with the channel volume. Once you're satisfied with the gain structure make small adjustments on the EQ until you're happy. That's all I have to advise tbh 😅
Hey domenic, I hope you enjoy your holidays. It was interesting for me that you didn't prefer savage 120 over JSX 15 yrs ago, since savage delivers very cold razorsharp tone that is very distinctive compared to any other tube amp. Have you listened to band Psycroptic? their guitar player uses jsx to get that very very tight rhythm tone where every chug is well defined and doesnt get mushhy. So I thought this amp suits the best for that kind of style. what do you think? I am really interested to know how you want to get your tone from this. keep us posted.
The 3120 is a rebranded xxx with el34 stock instead of 6l6. The jsx is a modified xxx with slightly different controls. The xxx ii is a rebranded jsx after satch left for marshall
hi dome, can i ask how do you do measurments of frequency repsonse of an amp or pedal? i see a spectrum analizer but i don't know if you use a white or pink noise generator
Two of the shittiest guitar pedals that I've ever owned had Satrianis name on them. Those Vox pedals he signed off on. Garbage. The amp is cool though, for the right price!

I have a 3120, but I've had a desire to try the JSX. Based on this review they seem to have a similar tone profile.
I think the 3120 is the successor of the JSX iirc

Satriani is cool. I think he probably sounded most unique when he was using these.

I think the can I played over had a huge influence over my choice at the time!
Is that thing comparable to a Peavey 3120? The 3120 had an Active EQ, but somehow it never really got any recognition like other Peavey amps.

I'd get this amp if I saw it for a good price and while I know Joe Satriani is a "good" guitar player, I can't stand his music personally.
He's an expert player. Cant stand it either.
He’s hit or miss for me. He has a few songs that I really love but a lot of it is obnoxious.
