  • Japan is a country full of beauty and brokenness. Natural disasters, wars, a loneliness epidemic, and an aging population all bring unique challenges to this nation and yet, it’s hard not to see the beauty born out of it, as well. In this episode of Hard to Reach: Japan, Steven Morales explores how beauty and brokenness in Japan point to a Beautiful Creator who was broken for us.

I am a Canadian who is half Japanese. I was born in Japan. My mother was Japanese and my father was English. My mother was a Christian. Unfortunately she never allowed herself to be completely given over to Christ. She despised her father. She was prejudiced towards Koreans and never felt any guilt about what Japan did in the Second World War. She is Heaven now but she could have done more while alive here.

@@DuzzinsSama depends on your definition of success. Reaching out to the Japanese is definitely a team effort and I am happy for many other co laborers. I’ve been blessed to see God at work, as I hear and see the testimonies of some who have come to Christ, YES. In my experience, it takes multiple years between when a Japanese first encounters Christianity, to when they come to Christ for themselves. While I haven’t personally had the opportunity to personally pray with a Japanese person to lead them to Christ or baptize one, I have done what I can to sow seed. As Paul says, “ I plant, Apollos waters, but God brings the increase”.

Something that I notice is that the beauty in those who have suffered isn't in the suffering itself, but rather in the healing from it. A person who sins is not beautiful because of their sin, but one who has been healed from their sin--that is beautiful. No one finds a wound beautiful, but a scar can be.

I stay in China, and I do the work of God here. However, the Chinese converts I’ve met (2 in 3 Christians) met Christ when they went abroad. Why am I sharing this? You might feel you need to be in Japan to save the Japanese, but if you look around you, in your schools, there are a lot of these oriental souls. Preach to them, share the gospel with them. They are often the vessels that will return to their own people and share this gospel with them. That is what noticed about the Chinese souls who preach and serve God here, most had time abroad got saved there, returned and are doing a lot for God here.

Yeah but we know the creator of beauty: evolution. We have evidence that this non-intelligent process would cause us to find things beautiful if it improved our ability to live, thrive, and reproduce. So we're descendants of those who considered waterfalls beautiful because those people survived/thrived/reproduced better than those who had no instinct of beauty (or whose idea of beauty was something non-beneficial to us).
Note that we shouldn't confuse beauty with our fascinations of more dangerous things. We may find it fascinating to observe how people fail or how bears act because to observe these things results in knowing how they work, which improves our fitness.
Meanwhile we have no evidence of any gods.

While Kisaeng did have a similar role, they were purely for the entertainment of the upper classes, as well were enslaved from the lowest castes. The role of the Kisaeng is more similar to that of the Tayū and Oiran, since they had to be skilled in almost everything from music to poetry.

@@Durray13 It can definitely be a difficult concept to grasp, so I don't blame you not understanding, I didn't either for a long time.
There is something called the Holy Trinity, which is Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is God, and God is Jesus in human form, but God and Jesus are also separate, and both have the Holy Spirit in them.
Jesus has all of the powers of God, but can live, feel emotions, and die. He was fully divine, and also fully human, in other words, perfect.
God created Jesus to be a messenger to humanity, that He has taken on the debt of all of our past, present, and future sin.
A lot of people back then didn't think that Jesus was God either, and they killed Him for it, so you're not alone in not believing in that, just don't kill anyone over it lol
I hope this helped to explain it! If you need anything else, please ask. Take care brother, and God Bless you

The main harm and danger caused by the man-made Bible and the man-made Quran is, that even though they contain man-made wisdom, they also contain man-made errors that are claimed to be the word of their god.
By that, they expect the reality to adjust to those errors and not vice versa.
Thats very harmful, especially as those man-made and “godly claimed” errors include topics like e.g. astronomy, evolution, biology and homosexuality.

It's strange that I came across your video. I just got back from Japan two weeks ago and spent a fortnight there on holidays with my adult daughter. I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful country but I sense something very sad. I sensed despair. The Japanese people are very sad and lonely. I sensed fear too. I couldn't understand this feeling. My daughter and I wanted to come home and she was thinking of living and working in Japan as she is an 3D Animator. But now she has second thoughts. She cried in Japan and couldn't understand what she was feeling. I felt what she was feeling but we couldn't really put it in words. Then we decided to find a church there. We went to Early Church in Osaka. Our spirits were lifted as we worshiped the Lord and sang praises to Him among the Japanese people in a park. We felt God's presence among us. He knows Japan and has not forgotten the Japanese people. We must pray for them. They need hope and God's love. They are stuck in a ruck. In slavery. Spread the Gospel and show them Jesus so they too can be set free. We cannot stop thinking about Japan. There is something so special here. God loves the Japanese people. Do not choose suicide, choose life. Choose God. Let Him set you free by the blood of the Lamb xx 🙏

what about this video was enjoyable? all I saw was a manipulative look at Japanese culture, talking about social issues such as suicide. IN 2020. side note: it is no longer 2020. I ask you how America, one of the most Christian countries on earth, manages to be this broken?

Wow. To watch an incredibly well-produced video essay on TH-cam about Christianity and *not* get sucker-punched with a hyper-fixation on the toxic minority of adherents was so unexpected and refreshing that I'm not even sure how to feel. There's so much joy and healing in Christianity (more specifically in Christ) but everyone seems so focused on the negative/abusive. You're doing the Lord's work, man.

For anyone who took this video seriously, I highly recommend Shusaku Endo's book Silence. A Christian-Japanese perspective on the issue is always useful. There's a movie as well but I've only read the book. It will better help you all understand why Christianity hasn't worked in Japan.
For solutions to all the problems the Japanese face, I suggest taking a look at its geographical positioning as well as the lasting impact of Bushido culture on Japan's social norms. Research done by Yamagishi Toshio dives deep into this and seeks actual solutions.

It was refresh to see such a good series about Japanese Christianity like this. I was born and raised in Japan until I was 40. I believe the biggest problem in Japan outreach is that there is no concept of believing in God. They believe goodness is only coming from luck or maybe from their direct ancestors. Though they tend to believe random sprits that may cause you bad luck. Since they don’t believe God’s existence, they don’t believe miracles. Therefore, Jesus’ miracle birth is hard to accept, let alone resurrection of Jesus. Also, there is no concept of “sins” because they don’t believe the existence of perfect God to compare. If I say we are all sinners, unless one has committed a real crime, everyone would get offended really bad therefore, they can’t repent to God and show their repentance by action. Reach out through the brokenness of people, tell them Jesus loves you, are easy way to feel accepted (not only in Japan), but that way would take a long time to grow in maturity - in order to get through suffering, trials, and storms. In my opinion, I don’t like to say Jesus loves you to unbelievers. Jesus said, if you love me, obey my word. Or unbelievers may say, then if he loves me, why natural disasters happened? First, let them understand the concept of perfect God, only true God, righteous Father, Holy Father, I believe that is the right way. Present them hard facts about Jesus and let them investigate themselves to come to the conclusion that Jesus is God.

That’s actually a good argument… nice explanation! But john 14 isn’t if you obey me I love you, it was if you love me, obey me and Lord Jesus will be with us and dwell in us. Lord Jesus is love, and until the judgement day, He will continue to love us because He cannot deny Himself. I would like to think till the end of our days He loves us and hopes for us to repent till the last breath. John 15 says we will die if we do not abide in His words, but He never states He does not love us. As stated like how a woman cannot forget the baby she births, God would never forget us. He loves us all sinners

@@Durray13 The problem of your questions and answers is that you are thinking like a human, not like a God.
Yes, Jesus is the Son of God because the spirit of Jesus is part of God Himself but was "contained" in a human body via Mary's trust in God.
So, God the Father in the Heavens and God the Son on Earth shared the same spirit but they were two separate entities, as one was human, whilst the other is eternal.
God sacrificed his only Son to teach us stupid people that God really loves us: he loves us so much he wanted to stop the jewish traditions of "small" sacrifices and replace it with a new message. This new message is: if you believe Jesus is our Lord (as He is God Himself in human form) and repent from your sins, Jesus takes your sins away through his perfect sacrifice at the cross. This means you are cleansed in front of God the Father via the sacrifice of God the Son and you are allowed in Heaven.
Therefore, you access Heaven not for your actions that "buy" your access (as many people unfortunately still believe) but by Faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation is free. No boasting, no pride but humility as we DO NOT deserve this gift from God.
Repent and be saved. Your salvation and faith will then make you take action and help God build His Reign on Earth.
I will be praying for you so that you may have more clarity.
I am open to answer any questions to you, if you are open to it :)
      God Bless you.

That’s so beautiful. I used to think being happy was as simple as not being sad and that being with Christ would make me happy, but now I see, even though I may be sad over circumstances sometimes, there’s also joy and beauty in the process of being broken by the Lord. Thank you.

4:22 this is a little deceptive. I read about this when it happened. Japan, like other countries, has (the equivalent of) federal and state laws. The prefectures all had it higher than 13 before Japan raised the federal AOC. So basically, it wasn't actually changing anything except on paper, since it was already higher in all the prefecture laws.

I once read that one of the hardest things about preaching in Asia is that you have to tell them their ancestors aren't in Heaven. As non believers, they're either in Hell or annihilated. And so, many reject the gospel, as who would be OK with that? If only more preachers would talk about the universal restoration. They'd know that even it took a bit longer... They'd see them again.

My deep burning love for anime, manga, and technology have always grounded me in Japan even though I was close to living there once upon a time. Japan have scars that run deep but they channel that into something beautiful through art and storytelling. They understand what it means through hardships its can make one stronger and strong willed. They understand the beauty in brokenness but they have yet to embrace the One who loves the broken because He sees value in them. Japan is embroiled in their own religions and myths because they are trying to seek something higher than themselves. The gospel has been planted in this country but it is not growing as much because of their traditions and history, past and future hurts they can't seem to let go.

I so, so desperately want to help spread the gospel through Japan. I have had a life long love for Japan and have been throughout a lot of the country a couple times. My church a year or so ago gave a presentation on their missionary outreach and progress. I was adamant that we try to reach the Japanese. I can't think of a people less reached and in need for the Lord. Their response was essentially that the Japanese were hard to convert (cant think of a better word) and thus their resources were better used elsewhere. I was really disheartened by the response. I felt like we are just leaving them to die. I am so thankful there are people like you reaching out and I would love to be able to aid in some way doing the same thing.

Yes but with all its brokenness there are still far more Christians in the US than Japan. There are many things that we can indeed learn from the Japanese, but this is about the immortal souls of each person. Whilst false teachers abound in the US, there are many good and faithful Christians too. In Japan the biggest problem is that there are just so few laborers that the Gospel is not spread, and ironically, it is the stability and overall goodness of life in Japan that keeps many from exploring Christianity. In China for example, because things are so difficult for the Christian, Christianity there is exploding and those that meet in the house churches are faithful and true brothers and sisters in Christ. I myself have witnessed the thirst that they have for knowing the Gospel and knowing God.

I still do not know how nor when, but it is my prayer to be ready for it. Work like yours helps toward that end immensely.

It is about Takashi Nagai, and it does a great job detailing not just his life and legacy, but also the history of Christianity in Japan (as you touched upon in episode one). @@Durray13 Thank you for your comment!
There are multiple Christological errors made in the listed Q&As and subsequent conclusions, mainly those that treat Christ's divine and human natures as either the same or merged into one new nature.
Jesus is one Divine Person, the Son, who, through the Incarnation, in the Hypostatic Union, has two natures; human and divine, each distinct, not confused nor combined. Some things pertain only to His human nature (e.g. being born), whereas others pertain only to His divine nature (e.g. being eternal). However, through the Communication of Idioms, we CAN say things like "God was born in time," or "Mary, the Mother of God," or how St. Peter says in Acts 3:15 "You put to death the Author of Life." There comes with this a responsibility to have a healthy appreciation of the Mystery of the Incarnation. Christ's human soul was separated from His human body on Good Friday, but His divinity did not die. Mary was the conduit by which God entered into time, but she did not birth the Creator before He made Creation.
Jesus is the Son, one of the three Divine Persons of the Trinity whom share in one Divine Nature, equal in all ways except that which their Personhood distinguishes through the Eternal Processions: God the Father, the one who generates the Son, God the Son, who is generated, and God the Holy Spirit, who is spirated as the love between the Father and the Son.
These issues were addressed by the Early Church Fathers as many people came to conclusions similar to what you posted, which resulted in serious errors and issues for many fine people. While I am happy to provide further clarifications to questions you might have, the TH-cam comments section is not the best place for such theological discussion. I would strongly encourage you to look into the Arian Controversy and the subsequent Ecumenical Councils that addressed his Christological heresy and the others that followed it.
Hope that helps! Cheers, and God bless!
