    Instead of setting the altitude in the QNH and doing that math, you can just take your drop altitude and add target altitude.
    ie if drop altitude is 4000ft, and target altitude is 2456 as shown, your new drop altitude MSL is 6456 (round, obviously, so 6500). IMO its easier to do this without having to dial in QNH, as you can just use some "quik mafs" and be close enough without dialing.
    Ideally I'd like to have a piece of masking tape, a sticky note, or a grease pencil to mark the altimeter.

  • @CakePrincessCelestia
    @CakePrincessCelestia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Top notch tutorial again!
    BTW, no need to do the maths. Just substract the base altitude difference. Target is 300ft higher than your homeplate? Just crank the thing down by 300ft. Both methods however would be inaccurate in case of pressure differences that we still don't have in DCS with the new clouds.

    • @delayed_control
      @delayed_control 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're already inaccurate if temperature is different than 15C. That is simulated.

    Hi there ! Very interesting tutorial, thanks a lot. But I must have missed something on the QNH/QFE stuff. I mean, everything you explain is only valid if the QNH that day is indeed 1013. Might be worth mentionning that you have to use the actual QNH, and not blindly put 1013

  • @williamleadbetter9686
    @williamleadbetter9686 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You really got to wonder why the Ruskies designed the Mig-21 Bis with radar ranging and the French did not. French engineering is really quite excellent with a better balance between simplicity and function than even the Germans at times tendency toward over complexity. This would of take much of the guess work out of air to ground ranging and the purpose of the whole other half of weaponized radar in the 1st place.

  • @dimitrinikolas4481
    @dimitrinikolas4481 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just for info, nobody does that kind of math IRL with mbs and so on. You just take your target altitude, and add it to the release height, and that's it, that's your release altitude...

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just for info i had feedback specifically from SME (Real F1ce pilot, subject matter expert) and another qualified pilot moderate / vet this video prior, and this was the recommended method. By all means there are shortcut methods, but they wanted to go 'by the book' as it were for the video.

    • @dimitrinikolas4481
      @dimitrinikolas4481 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RedKiteRender let's admit that true for some air forces.
      I've had first hand experience with French F1CR and CT pilots and we always made it the simple way.
      One reason was because it was mainly not pre planned targets, therefore no way to have the local QNH beforehand. Other reason, target altitude was pretty high in general, and the 30ft/mb rule didn't apply that well.
      But I understand your concept, that's certainly a good one for preplanned targets.

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speaking specifically on the DCS front, QNH is global at the moment, pending atmospherics improvements, so it'll work better than real life! There's a few other methods for release altitude employed by dcs players too, particularity if you talk with the DCS Viggen crowd.

    I got the F1 and I am absolutely happy. It comes with checklists in the cockpit Shift-k kneeboard right from the start. Excellent for a casual player like me! Most modules dont even have that. I know there are ways to build your own kneeboards or download and integrate them but I admit I am too lazy to do that. Great value added for very little extra cost for the developer, this should be standard for DCS!
    Regarding strafing especially, am having issues keeping her stable and lining up properly. Very twitchy beast. I realize this is how its supposed to be, good trim and awareness of all parameters are a must. No point in trying a run if its not perfect, better go around. Quite challenging.

    I was really hoping the gyro gunsight would work a bit like the one in the C101 where the crosshair covering a set distance would be the correct slant distance to hit the target because the gyro takes into account your speed and dive angle.
    I really like ground pounding but much like the F-5, this is going to be really, really hard to do properly.

      At least the later versions should provide a better gunsight from my understanding

    Are the other versions as far along? Because I am thinking of using this to get people into dcs with the trainer BE then build them up to solo flights then start throwing them into chaos that is multiple ships in formation.

    Back when you actually had to *fly* the jet. I love technology, the Viper and Hornet (and Strike Eagle) are going to be the premier precision engagement aircraft in DCS but it's the older aircraft (the Tomcat, the Mirage F1, the F-5, the F-4 and all the other 'Cold War era' aircraft) that actually make you a better ground-attack sim-pilot - no CCIP just angles, speed and altitude.
    Mirage F1 is looking amazing, I cannot wait to get stuck into it. Although, by the looks of things, there's going to be plenty for me to sink my teeth into very shortly. And I like it.

      Really hoping they'll improve the splash damage further so that you can actually destroy things without pinpoint accuracy. Dumb bombing often feels like a fool's errand these days when you need direct hits to actually cause damage.
      That said I have seen some signs of improvements, especially when it comes to taking out infantry from quite far away.

      The funny thing is that Soviets fighters like MiG-21Bis has the automatic slant ranging for you, partially.
      Example in MiG-21Bis the radar is used to measure the slant range and give you the proper CCIP pipper for guns and rockets, but not for the bombs... The bombs are dropped still by using the release table. Why? Because the radar can't gimbal low enough or calculate a CCRP to be able release bombs properly.
      With the MiG-23 (1968-1970, the Mirage F1 CE that is first we get is from 1974 (the F1C is from 1973)) has the full deal as it even has the INS, that was added to F1 only on next variant after CE).
      There is as well interesting reason why Soviets put for ground attack planes the laser range finders, like Su-25A from 1975-1979, and Su-17/Su-22 from 1970, MiG-27 1975 etc.
      Having a laser range finder and designator made possible to get very accurate slant range measurement and so on weapon delivery with INS. Having a re-attack capability by navigation computer remembering the attack/measurement point and guide pilot back to it for re-attack. But when in planes like MiG-27 and Su-24 you got the TV targeting added, it made possible engage targets from further distance than visually spotting target and area. So laser guided missiles became even more capable as it was now over 3-5 km ranges to release weapons.
      This is as well achilles heel in DCS, that AGM-65 Maverick is way too long range weapon, where it should be more closely used from 2-3 km ranges instead current 10-15 km as the TV/IR seeker is not capable to lock on tank size target further than about 1.5-3 km range and to large bridge size target from about 5-7 km. Why the laser guided maverick is the most used as you can really get that 5-10 km lock-on capability if JTAC is very close to the target and weather is proper etc. And that is why Soviets favored missiles with RF guidance like Shturm / Ataka in helicopters, but same time as well the Vikhr is superior is you get really that excellent 8-12 km performance from it when combining to 7/24x Shkval depending your release speed and altitude.
      At the moment most of these cold war era weapons are too capable in DCS, and should have much shorter ranges to be used. Why JDAM is preferred as you really can stay far away from target as GBU-12 should require to overfly the target and get bomb seeing the laser spot, that JTAC needs to have properly painting. As currently the laser spot is unrealistically visible to every direction (omnidirectional) regardless the seeker angle to it. As best angle is between 30 and 60 degrees from the designator.
