One of my favourite songs too. The storytelling is just breathtaking and edge-of-your-seat for a song! Richard has such a wonderful (*swoon*) voice as well 🙄🤣
Funny thing about this song. Richard tells the story at his concerts. He wrote it because he wanted to write a story song. Then he put it away thinking it was awful. Finally, one night at home he recorded it so that he wouldn't forget it if he wanted it later. His wife came in and told him he should record it because it was a HIT! He says, "you know just once, us guys want to be right! So, I recorded it to show her it wasn't any good, and it became one of my number 1 hits!"
This is my favorite Marx song. THIS is how songs should be. Tell a story, capture the listener. Give them something emotional to be invested in throughout.
I thought that was him. I had forgotten and then I kept looking at him thinking it was RC. I always think of him from the battery commercial (knock this battery off my shoulder) from the 70s. I cannot remember if it was Duracell?
"Should've Known Better", "Satisfied", "Don't Mean Nothing", "Now and Forever" and "Silent Scream" are all great Richard Marx songs to do next time. You will love "Silent Scream" as it is about how people disrespect the elder generation and the video is amazing. It was directed by Kiefer Sutherland ❤
I love Richard Marx!! His voice is so haunting and beautiful! Such a talented man! Other songs to check out are Don’t Mean Nothing, Should’ve Known Better, Satisfied , Children Of The Night, & Hold On To The Nights!
“Don’t Mean Nothing “ is a behind the scenes look at the record business. Richard also married MTV VJ Daisy Fuentes. I believe they are still married in 2024.
That specific story may not be true, but similar stories play out in small towns all the time. It may not be a murder that happens, but almost always those who are poor (or in this case those who are considered trailer trash) are targeted by law enforcement in those towns. If something goes wrong the first place they go to is where these people live.
Conrad had a great career. I probably remember him best for the mid-70s TV series Baa Baa Black Sheep, about USMC ace Greg Boyington and the squadron of Corsairs he commanded. The real Boyington was a technical advisor on the series.
I was 13 or 14 when this song came out and was OBSESSED with it. 2 months ago I saw Richard Marx at Epcot for a concert and the first performance he didn't do Hazard, so I hung around for the 2nd concert and it was the 2nd or 3rd song he did and I left so happy! It's my favorite Richard Marx song and he still performs it so very well!!!
Richard Mark started off as a jingles singer and background vocalist. He sang background vocals for Luther Vandross and many other artist.. I met him in 1986 and opened for him on several occasions. After this song came out, he left the industry for many years to raise his family in Chicago. 🕊❤️🎼
I'm SO excited to see another Richard Marx song! I've been waiting forever for another one. You guys have only touched on his slow ones though - which are amazing - BUT he does have an edgier, rockier side as well. Please, please, please check out Should've Known Better, Don't Mean Nothing, and Too Late to Say Goodbye. Lonely Heart is also another one that didn't make it to radio - but it's a personal favourite. BTW - Richard was married to Cynthia Rhodes who played Penny (the blonde in Dirty Dancing - Johnny's first dance partner).
I was a teen in the 90s at the height of his popularity... I never considered myself a fan until I was older. I never realized how many good songs he has!
This is one of my favourite songs and Richard Marx has such a great voice. The video brings to mind David Lynch and Twin Peaks in the way it's filmed in black and white and is also set in a small town and there's a dark undertone to this town that's under the surface and what happened to Mary.
One of those songs that captures you by surprise? Was never into Richard Marx, but when I heard this song? Wow this is a masterpiece from him. It made me appreciate him more as an artist.
He really through a curve ball with this song and story. I can't recall all these years later if he ever resolved the story, or even if there was a story. But it was a surprising enormous hit. He has never stopped writing or recording and many of his songs have been hits for other major artists. His own stuff remains at a very high level of quality, and he still has the pipes! Saw him a couple of times at The Royal Albert Hall back in the day.
I hope next time you get to Richard Marx ....who is a protege of the late Randy Meisner from the Eagles FYI, check out Richard a little bit more fired up and check out Don't Mean Nothing.... 🙏❤️😎🇨🇦
Yes I am so happy you did this one! This is in my top 3 Richard Marx songs! The whole story of the song, the video, it hooks you in and makes you think, it’s just perfect! You can have endless conversations about who really killed Mary. Fun fact: when Marx wrote this, he had no intention of releasing it. But he played it for his (now ex) wife and she told him he had to! And he had no idea it would become as big as it did! You should do Don’t Mean Nothing next, it’s another song that tells a story and more up tempo!
This song was an unexpected and incredible departure for Richard Marx from his "usual" sound and song themes. I much preferred his up-tempo songs to his ballads, but this one was something else entirely. The lyrics... the tempo...the instrumentation... just something we hadn't heard from him before. We all loved it back then! I think it's held up well over the decades.
I remember this video being MASSIVE on MTV in 1991!! Music Videos were so good in the 1980s & the 1990s. This was like a small mystery movie with music!
I love this singer so much. He’s my summertime smooth crooner I save for strictly between June-August every year. I recently saw a clip of him singing live from this year and he genuinely still can sing exactly like this. I hope I get to see him live, he just released a new album so fingers crossed! ❤❤❤
3 Different songs with the same name you should check out: 1) Should've Known Better- Richard Marx. 2) I Should've Known Better- Beatles. 3) I Should've Known Better - Jim Diamond. All three were Huge hits.
Oh wow I had forgotten all about this song, probably haven’t heard it in over 30 years. Wasn’t an overly huge Richard Marx fan but I liked some of his songs, this was one of them.
Not only does Richard write his own songs but also some made famous by other people. Best known would be This I Promise You by 'N Sync, To Where You Are by Josh Groban and Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross
I saw Richard Max in a theatre way back in 1989 (Sydney Australia) and he performed a rendition of Beatles songs in acapella. This man can bloody sing, sing and sing some more. I've never forgotten the experience to this day!
I've never been much into Richard Marx but this song I have always loved ever since the first time I heard it, probably mostly because it's such a dark song and story. Even when I was I kid I was always more drawn to darker material
I believe Marx once said the mystery of the song/video is open to interpretation as to the killer. Great song and so haunting, personally I think more so because it's not explicitly said so we can only view the events from a distance.
It's really interesting how a song like this can actually be somewhat dark as it progresses. I like that though. This was a really deep, emotional song. Very good. I'd also like to recommend: Alias - More Than Words Can Say Oasis - Don't Go Away Winger - Headed for a Heartbreak Saigon Kick - Love Is On The Way
Years before his successful run as a solo artist, Marx was already an established session musician, backing vocalist, and songwriter, working and collaborating with Kenny Rogers and longtime co-writer and co-producer David Foster, and continuing to write and produce music for Madonna, NSYNC, Vince Gill, Josh Groban, Luther Vandross, Kenny Loggins, Barbra Streisand, Keith Urban, and more throughout his 40-plus year career.
I was waiting for you guys to do this one. Amazing song with a great video. RIP Robert Conrad a.k.a. Pappy Boyington for those old timers who loved that TV series out there.
I’ve seen a few of the more upbeat tempo songs of Richard mentioned but one of mine is “Endless Summer Nights”. The instrumental arrangement, which includes the Saxophone 🎷, in it is wonderful. Then one of the most beautiful songs that has so much meaning for me is “Now and Forever”.
As i have presumed, Amber was really hooked with the story of the song. Well, it was a brilliant song, the tune, the instrumentals were really giving off spooky vibes, and the black&white video adds mystery to the song.. I love this song by Mr. Marx.. Hope you react to his song "Hold on to the Nights" next.
Amber & Jay, here are some other good Richard Marx songs to react to: "Should've Known Better", "Don't Mean Nothing", "Hold on to the Nights", and "Take This Heart".
There is a side of Richard Marx I don't believe you've seen yet... A more UPBEAT rock vibe... Please please please check out the "Richard Marx - Don't Mean Nothing (Live in Hollywood 1988)" video posted by parwinberg. Not the best quality video, but SO WORTH SEEING, especially as your first time hearing this song, to be able to visualize this FUN live performance any other time you hear this song. Along with Richard Marx's out of this world vocals in his prime, it features amazing sax, guitar, drums, and piano performances. One of my favorite live performances I've ever seen! 🥰
This is my absolute favourite Richard Marx song. ❤
Same here. Just added it back to my play list last summer after years of not hearing it.
One of my favourite songs too. The storytelling is just breathtaking and edge-of-your-seat for a song! Richard has such a wonderful (*swoon*) voice as well 🙄🤣
Beautiful and haunting song. Love Richard Marx.
Funny thing about this song. Richard tells the story at his concerts. He wrote it because he wanted to write a story song. Then he put it away thinking it was awful. He says, "you know just once, us guys want to be right! So, I recorded it to show her it wasn't any good, and it became one of my number 1 hits!"
so glad someone beat me so I didn't have to write so much 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I saw that in the VH1 Storytellers concert. this is my favorite RM song, and video.
This is my favorite Marx song. THIS is how songs should be. Tell a story, capture the listener. Give them something emotional to be invested in throughout.
The Sherrif killed her and tried to frame Richard. Love this song and video!
The sheriff Is there to throw you off. The sheriff had a obsession with her. But he had a history of killing people over abandonment And jealousy
Damn how did you work that out I've been trying to figure for years lol.
@@093gazza It's always the sheriff.
There are 3 Hazard videos, Hazard chapter 3 reveals the killer
I love this song too, and always have.Glad to hear it again.
A GREAT Richard Marx song, with the awesome Robert Conrad (RIP).
I thought that was him. I had forgotten and then I kept looking at him thinking it was RC. I always think of him from the battery commercial (knock this battery off my shoulder) from the 70s. I cannot remember if it was Duracell?

You forgot "Keep coming back".
@@fitzgivesfits1 Also, "Angelia."
playin with fire
@@OthraerirDefinitely!
Richard Marx has another great song called ‘Hold On To The Nights’. It was also one of his most popular and beautiful songs! ❤
Obsessed with that song in the late 80s, great tune.
Just a Touch of Heaven sultry
I love Richard Marx!! His voice is so haunting and beautiful! Such a talented man! Other songs to check out are Don’t Mean Nothing, Should’ve Known Better, Satisfied , Children Of The Night, & Hold On To The Nights!
“Don’t Mean Nothing “ is a behind the scenes look at the record business. Richard also married MTV VJ Daisy Fuentes. I believe they are still married in 2024.
My favorite Richard Marx song. He still sounds EXACTLY like this live. He’s the only person who could win a Grammy singing the phone book.
Mine too and it haunts the shit outa me.
Sherrif did do it
"Now and Forever" was a song to his wife and young son (lyrics/video).. is a really nice one.
Same here, favorite RM song 🤘🏼
Valid
Can NEVER go wrong with Richard Marx. Love everything he has ever done!
When I saw Richard Marx live, he said people always ask him if it’s a true story. He stares back at them blankly.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol I can totally picture that dead pan stare...I love Richard's sarcastic humor 😅
That specific story may not be true, but similar stories play out in small towns all the time. The Sheriff in this video is played by a real actor, Robert Conrad, he played the lead role in the series, The Wild, Wild West, James West!
The show was in the 60's.
Conrad had a great career. I probably remember him best for the mid-70s TV series Baa Baa Black Sheep, about USMC ace Greg Boyington and the squadron of Corsairs he commanded. The real Boyington was a technical advisor on the series.
Great actor. I still watch The Wild Wild West show.
@@stevetournay6103 I do remember that show, but I was more of a fan of the Wild, Wild West.
seeing someone remembering the show makes me feel not so old 😁😁😁😁
I grew up watching and loving it. one of my favorite shows from that era
Richard Marx was the absolute king of Ballads.
Should’ve Known Better - Richard Marx. J/A another huge up tempo song from him from 87’. Love to see you react to it!!
Richard Mark started off as a jingles singer and background vocalist. He sang background vocals for Luther Vandross and many other artist..
I met him in 1986 and opened for him on several occasions.
After this song came out, he left the industry for many years to raise his family in Chicago. 🕊❤️🎼
He sang backing vocals on All Night Long by Mr. Richie.
He also wrote the hit song for Mr. Vandross 'Dance With My Father Again'
And the song, This I Promise You for N'SYNC.
I'm SO excited to see another Richard Marx song! I've been waiting forever for another one. You guys have only touched on his slow ones though - which are amazing - BUT he does have an edgier, rockier side as well. The sweet song, the rocky surroundings, and the mystery.... what a haunting combination in this -- easily Richard's greatest work.
Even as a kid, this song just hit different ❤
This is one of those tracks that lays out a whole story through the song .....amazing...Great reaction guys👍
This song is absolutely fantastic. Great storytelling.
I was a teen in the 90s at the height of his popularity... I never considered myself a fan until I was older. I never realized how many good songs he has!
Right??
This is one of my favourite songs and Richard Marx has such a great voice. The video brings to mind David Lynch and Twin Peaks in the way it's filmed in black and white and is also set in a small town and there's a dark undertone to this town that's under the surface and what happened to Mary.
This is my favorite Richard Marx song, thank you! 😊😊
The sheriff was played by the late Robert Conrad (famous for the TV series "Wild Wild West" & "Baa Baa Black Sheep")
I saw Richard live in concert last year. A great singer who still sounds as great now as he did in the 80’s.
A great singer and a brilliant song writer. Richard Marx can really tell a story and hit your feelings
Thank you for covering a more hidden classic from Richard Marx.
Stunning song, emotional and well conceived video. Now & Forever is another good one.
My favourite Richard mark's song

Gosh, I haven't heard this in YEARS! I saw him in concert in the late 90s or early 2000s, and he was AWESOME.
Richard has such an incredible voice. I love this mini movie song.
Richard Marx is still touring and is a most excellent human being.
YESSSS! I'm so happy you finally heard this.
Another really good one by Richard Marx is When You Loved Me, love this song!! I do believe you both with really like this one too! 🎶🎶
The best R Marx song
I remember when this came out everyone was trying to solve the mystery!
“Take This Heart” is another great Richard Marx song
He really through a curve ball with this song and story. I can't recall all these years later if he ever resolved the story, or even if there was a story. But it was a surprising enormous hit. 'This i promise you' is Richard Marx best song for me.
Richard Marx has one of the best male voice in the 80s, along with George Michael
Love that voice.
Richard Marx. Great artist. Great Voice. Great Person. 🌊
This is such an eerie song that I adore!! And one I can actually sing because of the low register 😅 #alto

Angel's Lullaby and Keep Coming Back both by Richard Marx
I remember this song hit the top 10 on American Billboard Top 40 countdown in 1992.
Saw him live once in Denmark.. His voice was just as amazing like this live..!
One of my faves!!!! Thank You!!
I remember hearing this on the local radio station in the uk
He was married to the woman who played Penny in Dirty Dancing. This ties with Children of the Night as my favorite Richard Marx song.
I love this song!
