    I’ve been using the same pair of R70x’s for 8 years now in the studio and I still absolutely love them. For what it’s worth, they were NOT babied (they’ve been dropped, stepped on, thrown in bags, etc) and despite some nicks on the metal finish they’re still going strong. I think maybe the plastic is glass reinforced, so despite the appearance they’ve proven to be very very reliable and I’ve only had to replace the ear pads.
    Personally, I find them to be neutral and make a perfect additional studio reference

    Amazing video as always! I watched a few older reviews of yours and you improved a lot in your presentation. It is great how you always set up your videos similarely and the way you test and compare headphones really makes it easy for one to judge how a headphone will probably sound. Thank you also for adjusting the clarity rating of the focal clear from 45 seconds to 60 seconds. That makes them a lot more comparable! Btw my NX4 arrived today (a shop in France had it) and I am really happy with it! It shows quite a bit more detail than the Focusrite Audio Interface so thanks a lot for the suggestion. Looking forward to more of your videos :)

    I think your reviews are the by far the most thorough and detailed I've seen, and the specific descriptions (even timestamps!!) of tracks make it the best example of letting the viewer know what you're saying, much more so than just descriptions like "this is dark" or "this one a treble peak."
    I've been catching up to your older videos, and think your other videos like comparisons and things like the DT880 amp impedance videos are great learning tools, too. Really, I think the only thing I'd point out for any improvement are 1) the reviews/commentary in some sections can get a little long at times, so it loses a bit of entertainment value, and 2) I don't think there's any big need to emphasize the not paid for thing (which happens a little too much in some videos) - if anyone actually watches your videos and listens to the amount of substantive information backed up with evidence and maintains that position, I have to think they weren't really listening to what you were saying.

    I like these, for all they use a lot of plastic i have found them to be very robust and durable. Most headphones aimed at the professional market seem to be plastic and prioritize actual reliability and durability over luxury feel. And they are light. The wing system is not for everyone, I quite like it but even Audio Technica admitted it wasn't what most wanted and seems to have abandoned it. I got mine for a discount (about 30%) and am very happy with the price - performance/quality ratio. I find these to be reasonably neutral and balanced, not the best in the world but solid performers and very durable despite feeling a bit low rent.

      The R70x is a good headphone; you certainly get plenty of bass. Fit is very subjective, so you might be quite happy with the comfort. I don't think the 990 is a good alternative at all; it has very harsh treble, at least to my ears. If you want open back with bass, then consider the Base Audio G12 or Sivga Phoenix.

    470 ohms doesn't mean you need planty of power. As i tried you can easily drive them from a 3.5mm jack directly on your phone and they work pretty well without having to put the sound to max, even more, i am currently using them on my pc directly on the motherboard with the sound set to 34 on windows. What is more useful to look at is the sensitivity, wich indicates exactly how loud the headphones will be at 1mW of power.
    The ATH-R70x as a sensitivity of 99db, 99db for 1mW of power is far from NEEDING plenty of power...

The sound signature, likewise, isn't fatiguing at all, and I can listen to music with these headphones for hours. I know it's no comparison, but as someone who just entered the game, should be interesting to know all the differences between the ATH r70x and the much cheaper M40x.
    Another interesting comparison would be the HD 599, comparing an open back with an open back.
    The reason why I'm comparing much cheaper headphones is because I don't have much options here in Taiwan, and would like to know if it's worth it to spend much more money on headphones.
    And please don't tell me it's all depends on my budget, because I wouldn't know how much to spend on headphones without the said info I'm asking for. Also please don't tell me it's all about taste, as I don't have much experience with different kinds of headphones, so taste is irrelevant just yet.

    • @soulfulfool

      More like taste in music, just because there are headphones that do better bass or highs or for vocals and midrange. There are people who dont care about clarity those are "bassheads" xD. EDIT : I would make a difference between "neutral" and "natural". Neutral is regarding the recording. Natural is beyond the recording, so not neutral. As an extreme example : The Grado SR80eI have make a lot of songs more natural despite not being neutral. If the recording is not so good, a neutral headphone could not sound natural, just neutral. Neutral is objective, natural is subjective.

    R70x or Sundara for simply enjoying music?
    From what I have gathered so far the Sundara deliver unmatched clarity, detail and soundstage in their price bracket but need some EQ.
    Edit: Almost a year later 😅 had the Sundara for 6 Months now.
    Absolutely live up to the hype the clarity and soundstage is unreal you genuinely feel like you got a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound strapped to your head.
    Also bought the Topping DX3 Pro+. That makes it even better. Huge difference compared to the headphone output of any device I have and the little FiiO amp I've also had.
    It's crazy how with the Topping + Sundara the individual elements of a track just float on top of each other I've never heard it like that before.
    Did some EQ to raise bass response for some added punch and warmth and dialed the treble back around 5-6k just a bit because it got too sharp for me.

    R70x is a really bassy and warm headphone... if you change the pads. get a hybrid pad for this thing, and it became a bass cannon with tons of rumble and a nice vocal bloom, while retaining a good soundstage and somewhat lower technicalities compared to original pads.
    Comfort is... very noice. It will just disappear on your head because it's so damn light, I promise you. and if it grips too hard, just bend the metal headband. For my ears, this is an over ear headphone. But if you got larger ear, maybe it'll be an on ear.
    Personally, R70x pad-swapped + Hifiman Sundara is my end game. R70x (pad swapped) for when I want a really warm tube-y sound that you can sleep with, and a sundara if I want all the details and air and whatnot.

    for anyone having concern about the comfort, you don't need to wait for it to break in. the headband is bendable, you can manually bend it to reduce clamp, and it will stay that way. it won't break and can be reverted back. set it just enough to stay on your head, little by little, make sure you bend only the headband and not holding the earcup (the joint is plastic it can break). i have long hair and i almost don't feel this headphone (i could only feel the pads) because it's very light and the wing does its job, imo its genius. if you have a really big head, the wing could extend until it touches the headband, this could be uncomfortable. japanese or asian have rather small head, i think it's probably designed based on asian size.

    Had these for two years, driven by the Schiit Magni, and love them. Love the sound signature and I actually appreciate the lightweight build. I find them incredibly comfortable and have worn them for hours with no issues. I even can forget that they’re there after a while. My only issue is that the soundstage is not very spacious and wide as promised but it undeniably is far better than any closed back equivalent which I appreciate as the first open backs that I’ve owned.

    I thought about getting this or 6xx or sundara. How these 3 compare each other?

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All three are rather different. The Sundara is the closest to neutral among the three, but has a sub-bass roll-off just like all planars. The 6xx has fairly neutral bass but the vocals are pushed forward and a bit sibilant. The Sundara has the clearest sound of the three, and the largest soundstage of them as well. All three are good products, so it comes down to whether you have enough power for the Sundara and R70x, and what sound signature you want.

    You repeat many times that the instruments melded together. What does that mean? I'm assuming you're not referencing the mix itself but instead something about the headphones themselves. What does it mean when instruments are melded together?

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The instruments become harder to differentiate. Their tonalities become combined. Imagine a group of vocalists whose individual voices become difficult to hear when they’re singing together.

  • @blobeyeordie
    @blobeyeordie ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's of the utmost importance to understand that these are designed for the intended use of mixing/mastering in combination with monitors(these can work decently by themselves), not "audiophile listening"...as stated on their page... Unless of course, you enjoy natural to neutral reproduction. An analogy could be that these are the equivalent of a TV or monitor set to reference for color accuracy that average consumers will feel is less detailed and washed out. As opposed to the other displays set to dynamic or vivid, where everything is inaccurate, excessively vibrant and the image is far too sharp. That said these should be reviewed as such. For their purpose and price, they are quite detailed and present a very accurate staging and presentation for almost everything you'd need to monitor. And they tend to translate very well to most monitor speakers from mine and many other experiences with them. A jack of all trades, you could say.
    I do apologize for the negative comment, but there are far too many reviewers failing to take into account their purpose, which is why they sound the way they do. Which is ultimately why they tend to be indifferent towards them and/or give bad remarks. So please don't compare the R70x to other non-reference or "audiophile" headphones...because they arent

    • @jprmercado
      @jprmercado ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think your comment is negative at all. I think it's important to take into account that these are marketed as reference/monitor headphones to make a more informed assessment.

    Relatively flat and acurate, there is a 2db low shelf bump at 100hz with a slope starting at 200hz. There is also two dips at 5khz and 10khz, both not more than 3db. All this makes them sound relatively neutral and acurate, but not good overall and always too warm and not detailed enough.
    I believe I wasted a lot of money on these headphones as I still need to use an EQ to make them acurate enough for mixing. Disappointing...

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You can choose to listen without watching. But your complaint seems misapplied. How exactly should I film the sound I’m describing? I can’t help but direct you to every other TH-cam audio reviewer, and ask you to consider they talk about products and sound without showing more than a handful of B-roll footage. So, let’s try not to set special requirements just for my channel.

    • @thebritisher72
      @thebritisher72 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NoThemeReviews It's a good question and I thank you for responding. It seems pretty straight forward, but I realise requires a shit-ton of work. Context matters, so If you're discussing a specific model of headphone, only that headphone should be shown. If you're discussing an amp or DAC, show that for the time you're discussing it. My point about a podcast was to make things easier for you, since the audio stands on its own, but does not mesh with your visuals.

    • @NoThemeReviews
      @NoThemeReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s not an issue of work but practicality. Other than a few monomers when I discuss build, 95% of my video is about sound. Your critique would be appropriate if I were showing something that is visual or demonstrating a feature or teaching a method. I appreciate your input, but I’m not interested in doing a podcast and leaving TH-cam. I’m not going to follow an arbitrary rule that you won’t or can’t enforce on every other TH-cam audio reviewer.

    • @thebritisher72
      @thebritisher72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NoThemeReviews I'm not sure my critique is in any way inappropriate as your reply seems to suggest. But, as an example, when you mention The RME ADI-2 DAC as the driver for a headphone review, perhaps an image (stock or your own) or even footage would add context (visually). It is odd to hear you talking about a thing, whilst showing an unconnected thing on screen, is all.
