  • Four men who were working on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed are still missing. Divers have also located a pickup truck in the waters of Baltimore Harbor. Meanwhile, the NTSB will examine the recorders for insights into why the container ship lost power and couldn't turn before ramming into the bridge. With much of the ship traffic in Baltimore Harbor halted, thousands of jobs could be affected. NBC News' Tom Llamas and Tom Costello report.

    Why is the media focusing so much on the structural integrity of the bridge? Even if it was in absolute perfect condition it would not have been able to handle a crash of that scale. Bridges are not built to handle collisions of that size and speed.

      This should make you angry.. Structures called Dolphins are used to protect structures from possible impact by ships, in a similar fashion to fenders.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin_(structure). Since this particular bridge was a continuous truss design it has a single point of failure so compromising one pillar will have a catastrophic effect on the rest of the structure. I understand that the bridge was completed in 1977 when ships were smaller, but by 2024 it should have long been upgraded to Dolphin structure protection. Maybe if we were not sending so much money to Ukraine and other countries, we could upgrade our deteriorating infrastructure.

I don’t know if things are different in the US but here in the uk large ships are always escorted out of port by tugboats. Bridge collapses from being hit by a ship are rare but they do happen. On the 27 of February 2024, a empty cargo ship hit the bridge supports of the Lixinsha Bridge in southern China. The bridge collapsed and two vehicles fell into the water and three other vehicles landed on the ship. Five were killed and one crew member was injured.
    In the past, there have been bridge disasters. The Tasman Bridge in Australia was hit by a ship and the bridge fell on top of the ship killing seven crew members and five motorists died from dropping 150ft into the water below. The supports of the Bold Street Bridge in Sydney Australia, were not hit by a ship but by a train. As the train approached the bridge it became derailed and slammed into the bridge supports. The bridge collapsed on top of the train killing 83 people and injured more than 200 others.

    • @AreaCode757
      @AreaCode757 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      and…..those radios would have ONLY been for THAT company…..they had NO direct line to DOT……
      Every day all over the US there is active bridge deck work…..I myself was a bridge operator and bridge technician…..contractors are their own entity…..but even as a city employee we likely wouldn’t have known….4-5 minutes just isn’t enough time to get the warning to everyone….that ship/captain/pilot has no way to communicate with bridge staff or DOT …..unless it’s a 24/7 manned bridge that articulates….
      I’m sure the pilot was juggling cell phone and radio calls trying to get the word out….likewise notifying all they could on the marine VHF primary channels and emergency channels……still…..to reach THAT crew would of required having to likely contact the contractors dispatcher or management who would THEN have to call to THAT crews foreman and likely every or any employee they could reach on that crew….they didn’t have a chance…not enough time…
      Let me add…..there are reports the ship was sounding its horn as it realized the strike was imminent…..those employees working on that bridge deck WOULDN’T of heard it for at least 3 reasons.
      1. They were almost assuredly all wearing ear protection working with heavy tools like jackhammers or sandblasters.
      2. The noise of the equipment needed to operate those tools.
      3. If you’re familiar with the bridge as I am …you’ll know that that entire area is almost always subject to extremely high lateral winds that would itself buffer and redirect the horn …..even likely cell phones and or radio traffic.
      Where they were working was absolutely a high noise area….they essentially got cold cocked….terribly sad
