THANK YOU I’m glad someone else noticed that. Not a dealbreaker at all, I still liked the movie a lot, but it should have been a no-brainer reference and they didn’t do it.
Honestly, I'd argue that the "bomb stuck to hand/glove" scene was improved by the silliness of "why doesn't he just take his glove off", since it makes it almost more of a comedic scene. Like there's no _real_ tension there to begin with, Sonic's not gonna fuckin die halfway through the movie, the absurdity of it being stuck to his _glove_ being such a big deal turns a contrived scene, into a still contrived, but a little funnier scene.

reading the longclaw intro, I think it could have worked if they redid one small part I have 2 versions of it: 1: Long claw is hit by an arrow in a fatal spot. She makes it to earth, but cannot continue living on too much longer She's bedridden and Sonic sees her dying wondering what can be done, until she tells him to make peace with it. She passess. Sonic is still a young baby so his isolation plays into it still. 2: Longclaw is critically injured and forces sonic through the portal, holding back the Echidnas is an excuse, the camera cuts to her arrow wound, she's critically injured, and doesn't want Sonic to watch her suffer. This plays just about as quickly as the final version with a few shots added for dramatic impact.
Omg, just imagining version 2 got me really sad. Like to explain to the audience Longclaw didn't come w/ Sonic bc her wound was gonna kill her, you kinda have to show the aftermath. And I'm just imagining her lying on the ground and accepting it after she closes the portal.
Robotnik is my absolute favorite thing in this film, and it's entirely due to his motivations. I love the fact they don't portray him as just some wackass smart guy who wants to take over the world because he's wackass and smart; he's an actual scientist, attempting to capture Sonic in order to make scientific studies on him. It's not Sonic trying to stop the big bad man from doing big bad things, it's the big bad trying to stop Sonic in order to perform scientific research. It's so cool.
In the second movie it just wrecks this whole thing and Robotnik becomes the generic power hungry villain you see in the game. To be honest, this fits quite well since Robotnik was stranded on the mushroom planet for months, and just found out about the master emerald.
How is it cool? The version you've written here, maybe. But that's not exactly who he is in the movie. You're missing the random dancing and bullshit zany wackiness.
"Sonic has been around for like 30 years and this is basically the only time any piece of media has attempted to explain his origin" Do you mean to tell me you're unfamiliar with "TRIPLETS BORN, THE THRONE AWAITS, A SEER WARNS OF A DEADLY FATE..."
Him taking an ill minute to get the shoes didn't bother me too much. The scene where he got them low key made me tear up. He was so grateful and sweet to the kid and the fact he never made a big deal about needing new shoes prior to that made me forget his feet were fucked up for most of the movie.
Being someone who was never that keen on Sonic, I regularly forget that I'm subbed to essentially a sonic fan channel and have a momentary "wait wut?" moment. Same thing happens when Poncha uploads Warhammer videos... I don't even like Warhammer!
I was pleasantly surprised by how competent the first movie actually was. I went into it expecting an absolute trash fire. It wasn't a masterpiece or anything, but it was a very fun and enjoyable cinematic take on Sonic that made fans happy, while also introducing a new generation of kids to the franchise. I can totally see people looking back on movie Sonic with the same nostalgia people have for the games. He's a welcome addition to the ever growing lineup of Sonic incarnations.
When you think of sonic you think he would have a cheesy movie but still though the ova is insanely good and we better see a reference to knuckles kick ass hat in the second movie
@@96ZB I don't know why this is such a widespread rumor when it's not even true. Ken Penders didn't invent the hat, it's from the OVA. I think semi-recently it was even included as a skin for Knuckles in one of the mobile games or something. The hat not showing up is no different from Black Eggman or Sara not showing up again, they just don't particularly feel the need to acknowledge the OVA apparently.
@@KefkaJr It was likely a half joke. People do still think Penders took the hat in court. It's a widespread belief. Hell I believe it I don't know if Alex is right or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if they aren't since that court case was fucking stupid anyway and there is no reason KP should own several alt versions of Sonic chars.
"I just wish it was more Sonic-y" - That's exactly how I felt about the movie. For the sequel I hope they cut back on the useless fluff and show us actual Sonic characters, that's what everyone wants.
6:55 I like to think hes also a younger sonic. Like yeah the sonic we know now is a bit of a loner, but I can really see this sonic growing up into the sonic we know from the games.
I especially like how everyone bullied the heck outta Paramount Studios to the point where they spent a ton of money and time redesigning Sonic. Great job, everyone! We wouldn't have a sequel without you!
Cybershell has some weird time dilation powers where he can do what feels like a 30-60 minute comprehensive break down of something in less than 15 minutes
Jim Carrey to me makes sense because if Robotnik is anything he's definitely a showman, if he's taking over the world he's definitely going to let you know and to quote Megamind: "its all about Presentation!"
I think the reason why Longclaw didn't go through the portal is to ensure only Sonic got through. If they both went through, what's preventing a few Echidna's from following.
Yeah I have to agree. The movie was very okay. I would have preferred it to be 2d animated and in the style of the Sonic CD opening. Hell, at least like that Sonic Unleashed opening without the werehog bit.
You forgot to mention that Knuckles’ clan from SA1 was in the movie during the island flashback. Hesse even confirmed the echidna who shot Longclaw was chief Pachacamac. Not sure if it’s a deep-cut reference but it has some lore implications and I hope they touch on that in some capacity in the sequel, especially with Knuckles showing up. All things considered, great video.
I was pleasantly surprised by the movie and like you mentioned, Agent Stone ended up being a surprising character that the fans took to liking. Haven't seen too much spoilers for the sequel, but I'm looking forward to watching it with no expectations really
The trailer for the original was enough for me to see it wasn't for me, even after the redesign. I watched the movie and felt it matched my expectations of being fine for some of its intended audience, but personally disappointing. I'm feeling very optimistic for sonic as a film and tv franchise going forward though. The sequel's clear willingness to put the emphasis on the characters we know and love this time gives me reason to believe in its future being positive.
Every time I think "Hey, it's been a while since the last cybershell upload" he always comes back. I'm not even kidding, it's been like this for the past 4 uploads.
It's even funnier when Robotnik's Tank chases Sonic and Tom on the Highway, he said "Ever wonder where your Tax dollars are going" and to think in the movie he's employed by the government it's actually hilarious and scary at the same time if you think about it.
To be fair, there kinda is a reason for Longclaw to stay back, if she hadn't blocked the echidna's view of the portal ring until it disappeared they would have been able to find Sonic/the location of the Master Emerald, they make it clear in the 2nd movie that you just need to see the place to be able to make the ring take you there. That doesn't really excuse why we only get to see her for like a minute but atleast it makes sense why she sacrificed herself.
The Olive Garden thing works if you think of it (and I wish this had been IN the movie) as "The General got it out of his own pocket, because the government literally could not acknowledge Sonic without acknowledging that Robotnik was in their employ, and he *destroyed world landmarks* while technically an employee."
I'm surprised you never mentioned the car chase scene referencing the Sonic CD ending cinematic where Sonic destroys the road drones in a similar fashion to how he destroys the buzzy beetles there. I remember noticing that pretty clearly when I watched it
Looking back on it, I’m glad that they didn’t use the Chaos Emeralds in the first movie like they were going to. If they did, it would have taken the attention away from Sonic and the character building, and would have been there just for fan-service. I’m very optimistic for the sequel. Also, I didn’t have a single clue about some of those references on the map. The emerald I noticed, but referencing old concept art was actually a very sly way of adding another reference without being too “in your face” about it.
Just finished the video and I honestly agree. I thought the movie didn’t feel “sonic” enough and I just didn’t really care for the human characters that much (Besides Jim Carrey of course). I still enjoyed it tho and the sequel is looking to be incredible. Also, we waited 6 months to hear cybershell talk about Sonic’s feet. Let that sink in.
If the movie was just Sonic characters on Mobius (or whatever Sonic's world is called) and no human characters besides obviously Eggman, i think it would have made for a better movie.
If anything, the first movie is the setup. Sonic 2 will probably feel much more "Sonic", since its including a lot of the mainstays we know of (Tails, Knuckles, the Emeralds, ect).
@Batbudd exactly lol. funny how critics were slamming the first movie for being a generic human meets alien movie and then when they actually delve into the lore the critics get triggered and say they want more cookie cutter human interactions
You know what, you bring up a valid point with Longclaw Why did she stay and die when she could have just opened a portal Infront of her and send the echidnas to like… Genocide City zone
I hope that when he inevitably becomes Super Sonic, he gathers the Emeralds and runs around them like he did in the baseball scene. I think the power of the surge transforming him would be a fun call back and overall satisfying to see.
I watched it again too in preparation for the sequel, and my main thoughts are that it's not a Sonic movie, it's a movie with Sonic in it. I'm very glad it did well though so that we're getting the sequel, which is looking like it's going to be an actual Sonic movie, in terms of characters, plot, and overall design.
I mean, Jeff Fowler said himself that this first one was essentially a proof of concept so Paramount would give them the budget to make a proper Sonic movie.
8:25 Actually, in regards to why Eggman isn't fat, I watched this movie and thought they were going for the taller and more militant Eggman from Sonic Boom. That one isn't as fat as Classic or Modern Eggman, but he still has a good amount of heft to him, and he does have a more chaotic behavior compared to the silly but straightforward Classic Eggman or straight up evil and for conquest Modern Eggman.
2 years late but i *THINK* 1981 is a reference to Sega's arcade history, they started in 1981 but it is weird they chose that when they could have chosen the Sega Master's release in 85 or just use Sonic's creation year for 1991
I agree with everything that was said in this Video, that being said, pretty damn good. Definitely need to Re-Watch this movie when I get the chance, haven’t seen it since it came out, which was 2 Years Ago.
I dislike whenever there's a small creature in a movie that passes for a child with the simplest of disguises It's like, no, that's not a child, it's a never before seen thing with a poncho on
its interesting to finally see some opinon on this movie from a real big sonic fan, because ive basically only seen reviews of it based on the fact that its one of the first good video game movies, and you can hear basically only good things about it. but hearing it from a sonic perspective, not a video game perspective was really nice! i can see the points about it that youve made and they make perfect sense. and lets be real, i will always hold this movie close to my heart, because it opened the gates to the sonic world for me, so i cant do anything but love it haha.
I really like the first Sonic movie. Yeah, I do wish it had more elements from the games, but I feel like this movie needed to take things slow before we dived headfirst into all the Sonic lore/references, which I’m glad that the sequel is heading in that direction. Plus, I think the plot, while standard was actually pretty good. Like, the problem with with most CGI/live-action movies is that the titular characters are pretty much sidelined for generic human characters dealing with lame, boring issues. The Sonic Movie actually focuses on Sonic since he gets a decent amount of development and pretty good screentime. It helps that Tom is also a unique human protagonist in that he already has a healthy relationship with his wife and genuinely bonds with Sonic as the movie progresses. Which is why I’m glad the sequel isn’t outright scrapping Tom and Maddie because I believe they and Sonic are a family.
To put into perspective how quickly they killed Longclaw, I was on a Valentine’s date for this movie, and my date wanted popcorn, but the movie was about to start, so she got our seats while I got the popcorn.
*cowboy hat fall on Knuckles, looks at camera*
"Not in a million years."
*throws hat away*
*logo appears saying STH: Sonic The Hedgehog*
I think Penders took the hat in the divorce, sadly
@@96ZB I don't know why this is such a widespread rumor when it's not even true. Ken Penders didn't invent the hat, it's from the OVA. I think semi-recently it was even included as a skin for Knuckles in one of the mobile games or something. The hat not showing up is no different from Black Eggman or Sara not showing up again, they just don't particularly feel the need to acknowledge the OVA apparently.
@@ExaltedUriel I think it was a joke
@@KefkaJr It was likely a half joke. People do still think Penders took the hat in court. It's a widespread belief. Hell I believe it I don't know if Alex is right or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if they aren't since that court case was fucking stupid anyway and there is no reason KP should own several alt versions of Sonic chars.
Sometimes I forget that this movie came out on Valentine's day. Truly the movie for virgins
Literally me and my partner went to see it on valentines day and we loved it
Literally me went to see it and I liked it
:(
@@Splonton same
@@Splonton it was a nice date movie for me as well, lol
Dare I say… virgins with rage?
The Sonic in the thumbnail looks like he's about to lecture me on an inappropriate joke I made at the dinner table.
"I just wish it was more Sonic-y" - That's exactly how I felt about the movie.
For the sequel I hope they cut back on the useless fluff and show us actual Sonic characters, that's what everyone wants.
GUN is in it
THEY DID i just watched it, was amazing
@@curse7469 That's very good to hear. Looking forward to watch it!
8:55 The fact that the two bots from Sonic X aren't there speaks a lot.
I love how cybershell just appears at the most random times, with the most random topics
This isn't a very random topic considering the imminent release of the second movie (like he says).
Actively avoided the movie for 2 years until your review, now I can safely purchase a copy of this film.
Seeing Cybershell come back fills my heart with joy every time. I can't wait to see what he thinks of the second movie.
Cybershell always coming in with the random upload that forces you to drop everything and hear his mighty words of sonic wisdom. Never fails.
Watching this film with my mom on her birthday (February 14th) was definitely a special experience.
FINALLY, I'VE BEEN WAITING TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS
Seeing you upload is always a nice surprise. Having picky pointed to Tom had me laughing really hard.
I was conceived after my parents saw the first Sonic movie, so it means a lot to me that you also enjoyed it.
I absolutely LOVE how you can tell throughout the whole movie that they had so much fun making it.
When the world wanted the Cyber the most, He has finally came out of his shell.
I’m gonna be honest, the Sonic movie is a prime example of how to make a charming movie without being inherently *good.*
I just got around to watching it for the first time myself the other day. Perfect timing.
“Fast ET” is the most relatable thing to call this movie
Every time I think "Hey, it's been a while since the last cybershell upload" he always comes back. I'm not even kidding, it's been like this for the past 4 uploads.
It's even funnier when Robotnik's Tank chases Sonic and Tom on the Highway, he said "Ever wonder where your Tax dollars are going" and to think in the movie he's employed by the government it's actually hilarious and scary at the same time if you think about it.
The Olive Garden bit had the end is by far the funniest product placement in a movie, its up there with the Wayne's World bit for me.
Never thought I’d see you upload again
4:49 got a hard laugh out of me
same lmao
I love cybershell even if he uploads once a year
Never expected a Sonic Movie Bonus Video. Thanks. Can't wait for the next Sonic 2 bonus video.
I cant believe we have a second cybershell video to look forward to for the first time!
Always nice to see Cybershell post out of nowhere
To be fair, there kinda is a reason for Longclaw to stay back, if she hadn't blocked the echidna's view of the portal ring until it disappeared they would have been able to find Sonic/the location of the Master Emerald, they make it clear in the 2nd movie that you just need to see the place to be able to make the ring take you there. That doesn't really excuse why we only get to see her for like a minute but atleast it makes sense why she sacrificed herself.
I'm always ready for a new Cybershell video.
4:50 one of the best jokes in a cybershell video
And only 6 months later, he's back. And with a video I honestly thought was never going to happen
literally yesterday i was rewatching the sonic 3 bonus video, what a great creator Cybershell is
The Goodblood reference at 7:20 won me over.
I remember noticing that pretty clearly when I watched it
I'm from Australia where the Sonic Movie 2 has been out for a while now, and I gotta say, it's insanely good. Very much recommend.
[Spoilers]
Sonic 2's master emeralds made out of Chaos emeralds.
I just don’t like how sonic gaslighted Tom into not following his dreams so it feels like nothing was learned
Sonic 2 will probably feel much more "Sonic", since its including a lot of the mainstays we know of (Tails, Knuckles, the Emeralds, ect).
would you believe that a critic disliked the 2nd movie for not having enough human interaction scenes?
@@milky243 For real? What the hell? Do they not realize the movie is called “Sonic The Hedgehog” and not “Tom the Cop”???
@Batbudd exactly lol. funny how critics were slamming the first movie for being a generic human meets alien movie and then when they actually delve into the lore the critics get triggered and say they want more cookie cutter human interactions
Babe wake up! Cybershell just posted a new video!
Our lord and savior Cybershell has blessed us with yet another amazing video
It's just a remake of HOP. I can't imagine anyone caring about it if it didn't have the Sonic branding on it.
You know what, you bring up a valid point with Longclaw
Why did she stay and die when she could have just opened a portal Infront of her and send the echidnas to like… Genocide City zone
After watching the second movie, she actually did
bit late. but welcome back king!
I honestly loved the Sonic movie, it's not perfect, but it's just what I needed at the time
I hope that when he inevitably becomes Super Sonic, he gathers the Emeralds and runs around them like he did in the baseball scene. I think the power of the surge transforming him would be a fun call back and overall satisfying to see.
Nope, he summons 2 chilli dogs, I saw the second movie.
Nope, he summons 2 chilli dogs, I saw the second movie.
I mean, Jeff Fowler said himself that this first one was essentially a proof of concept so Paramount would give them the budget to make a proper Sonic movie.
they should've called this movie: Tom the Cop and his Black Wife ft. Sonic the Hedgehog
New Cybershell video? Nice.
I dislike whenever there's a small creature in a movie that passes for a child with the simplest of disguises
It's like, no, that's not a child, it's a never before seen thing with a poncho on
its interesting to finally see some opinon on this movie from a real big sonic fan, because ive basically only seen reviews of it based on the fact that its one of the first good video game movies, and you can hear basically only good things about it. but hearing it from a sonic perspective, not a video game perspective was really nice! i can see the points about it that youve made and they make perfect sense.
and lets be real, i will always hold this movie close to my heart, because it opened the gates to the sonic world for me, so i cant do anything but love it haha.
8:00 Robotnik explicitly conquering a couple of countries for the CIA was also strange
