The "driveline shock" is because of rev hang. So when you shift too quickly the RPMs are slightly too high for your gear. If you shift slower the RPMs drop a bit and thus it engages better. Happens in my STI all the time. Interestingly if you put on the AC on, the RPMs drop way faster and you can shift quickly.
Yea stupid rev hang, in my friends 17' sti you can bang gears with very little "driveline shock"...I tried doing the same in a WRX, good luck trying to shift fast without throwing up
@@ashtonmurch2142 I think they know the WRX attracts everyone from regular Joe's to hardcore folks... So it's hard to please the hardcore folks when the rev hang makes it easier for the common person to drive. Agreed though...
So refreshing to have you guys well informed on this car. As a WRX owner and huge Subie fan, I appreciate that you do the research (on forums) and are willing to look past the nagging issues.

18' WRX here, can confirm that there's a loss in 4k-5k rev range, but a tune clears this up. From shifting from gear 1 to 2 is also a bit notchy, adding a shift stop also helps! These changes definitely made the WRX a much better driving experience!

A couple of gallons (like 3) of E85 helps with the power dip at 4k RPMs. The engine is pulling timing to prevent knock. Subaru Boxers tunes are notoriously knocky engines.
I used to have a 2010 WRX hatch. It was a blast to drive. In February 2018 , I need to replace it (need to rebuild the engine and issues) and I checked for the 2018 WRX. The problem is I wanted to be hatchback. Also, it was missing some tech feature like Android Auto and Apple Carplay. So I decided to take the GTI over the WRX. This special edition still on par with the GTI and focus ST. It’s just an expensive trim like any high end trim. I think if I have to choose a trim for the WRX it will be the 'Sport' one at 35k CAD. I just wish they come back with a hatchback body. Great review guys !
Edgarson Romeus nah fam the hatchback sti was weird i do love hatchbacks but i dont think its should be in a wrx well maybe if they kept the sti as a sedan i would be cool with it...
Update to owning one. Finally got to try mine in a real winter storm. Did purchase a second set of wheels and snow tires as it comes with SUMMER ONLY tires stock at least in the USA. With winters? PFFFFFF LOL what snow? I was plowing snow with my front bumper (we had a storm drop 11-13" ~25cm) of the stuff in my state which typically doesnt see snowfall that high like you Canadian boys do. Literally unstoppable. I had more fun driving it in snow than should have been legal. If you get lots of snow I really cant recommend this car enough (along with proper tires). It handles so predictably, so confidently that it really sets the standard for winter driving as far as Im concerned. Seriously the storm was bad. Took me 2.5hrs to get home during that storm. Just because no one else could get anywhere. Finally got on a side road to get around the people stuck going up hills. This car got me home safe. To give you an idea some people were stranded on the highways. Some stuck 6hrs+. Highways shut down. Also im averaging something like 27-28mpg highway.
manny9800 that’s a contributing factor that sure doesn’t help. I had to dial in crazy camber to prevent it going positive in turns for autocross. That helps, but only so much. It’s the physics of hanging a motor in front of the front axels that it the biggest problem by far.
I hate how Subaru just keeps releasing these stupid overpriced, limited edition versions of the STI and WRX while Ford and VW leave them in the dust. Everyone knows they need to update the STI engine, it would be amazing if they could do STI versions of other cars too like the Crosstrek. I was a Subaru fan boy growing up but now that I have the money to buy one, they suck.

The torque dip between 4000rpm and 6000rpm seems to be a weakness with the Sub boxer engines. It's one of the biggest complaints in the Toyota GT 86 and Sub BRZ. People who bought those cars would change the header exhausts to fix the problem and then flash tune it. I thought it was better with turbo charged engines but I guess not. I guess the stock exhaust manifold makes the car suffocate in its own exhaust gasses that's why installing a new header always fixed the problem in the GT 86 platform
I have a 2018 WRX and can 100% confirm the engine falls on its face at around 5,000 rpm. I hear an ECU tune helps a lot, many people posting even simple stage 1 Cobb tunes saying "This is what the tune from the factory should be." I don't want to give up the warranty so early on, though, as I just hit 4,000 miles.
Sorry, this isn’t true for the STi, in fact it’s the opposite. The bigger turbo means it takes longer to spool, unlike the twin-scroll FA engine that the WRX uses. A lot of power comes from the 4000-5500 range.
Gavin Baker problem is not turbo lag. Turbo does kick around 2500 then you hit 4000 it's goes splat, then kicks back In after 5500.. This problem is with how they engineer the exhaust manifolds. With the NA engines in the BRZ as well as the GT 86 it would only improve after they replaced it with new header exhausts. Mazda, although not the same type engine figured out a way not only to enhance power but even improve efficiency by designing headers that are paired according to the engine's firing sequence to eliminate engine knock. I think the thing is exhaust pressure lingering in the exhaust manifold interferes with how the engine performs.
It's the stock tune that's the issue. This car is set up from factory to be fun, but also conserve fuel. When the Turbo kicks in, the vehicle runs very lean (as most factory tunes do), you get the nice boost effect, smile on your face and then at 4500rpm it falls flat. The reason is the car running as lean as it does, its gonna start to pull timing to prevent knocking. The pulling of timing is the flat spot between 45-55 hundred. Why do you think you can get away with running regular fuel in the WRX? Get a proper tune, ditch the regular fuel for premium and the car will run as it should. Keep in mind too that if this WRX pulled as it should all the way through the rev range,.. it'd would be dangerously close to being called faster than the STi... so then how does Subaru sell the STi?
My buddies dad just picked up one of these in B.C. That color looks even better in person. He loved the 2010 STI that my friend has for its driving dynamics, and was looking at an STI, but didn't want a gawdy wing on the back of his sedan. So everybody wins, haha!
boofighter it’s the WRX that has this problem because it has a twin-scroll turbo setup, meaning it has a smaller overall size compared to the STI turbo which doesn’t dip until it has passed 6500
in the wrx, it's not a tuning issue. It is a small turbo/manifold issue. It chokes up top. Can be fixed to an extent with a better tune but it will still be there. e85 tends to fix it and strapping a bigger turbo and better manifold got rid of it completely for me.

I always get really enthousiastic when watching your video's. The mood quickly turns when i start searching and find local prices. You can pick up a normal WRX for no less than 108k Euro (124k USD) in the Netherlands. Fml.
Hey Guys! sorry if anyone mentioned this already, but the part of the word Rai (雷) means lightning, which is why it is in words like thunderstorm, raichu (as Yuri stated) and Raiden from Mortal combat、etc. Just thought you guys would like to know! ps: awesome review/gucci gear!
what Subaru should have done is offer the WRX in hatchback configuration or offer a Crosstrek WRX! Other than the Raiu Edition, the 2019 WRX's interior is almost the same as my 2016 Crosstrek! Looking forward the new generation but unfortunately, I am giving up my least within 6 months, so I will have to make a choice and the current WRX generation doesn't make it for me!
I agree with the fact only Subaru enthusiasts would buy this. I love the colour, but for a bit more I would get the Golf R. Great review once again! Also that fanny pack...at least it's Gucci
This WRX special editions seem kind of pointless to me. Lots of extra money for not a whole lot of tangible additions to the car itself. Besides rarity.
I have a '17 Focus ST with a Roush catback exhaust and I've had a few run-ins with some WRX's. They'll always be quicker off the line than an ST because of the drivetrain but they aren't really faster. I can more than hang with a WRX but the real joy of an ST is the feel and handling. However, I like the idea of doing a comparison: WRX vs. GTI vs. ST. And not only with performance but in feel and driveability.
I just bought the American version of this car (Series.Gray), and it seems that they've addressed some of the problems you had with it in your original review. Subie grumble is back(somewhat), and they did some deletes to make it a little lighter and a little cheaper. No sunroof, SRH's, driveline shock doesn't seem too bad. Love the videos fellas, keep it up!
I thought the NFC tag on the infotainment screen was cool. Simple and fast to connect your phone through bluethooth. Would love this feature in other cars :)
I thought Yuri was gonna compare the weird Raiu with Raiden from mortal kombat. But he went with the Pokemon, Raichu. And that's why I love you, Yuri. 😂
I really wonder if that Pikachu version will find any buyer amongst the Subie fans... I mean, if you are a fan of a brand, it is not because you love their “second best car”. You do not love the Merc E63 because the E43 is fantastic. You buy the E43 because it is a more reasonable choice. The same way you buy a Boxster because you cannot afford a 911... But how reasonable is a WRX which almost costs more than the base sti? I hope Subaru will come with some better ideas and begin the new decade with more thrill and passion, otherwise we will all end up driving sad Golfs!
Yeah but again it's only 100 cars so I don't see them having trouble selling them. Some cars in this price range have fancy paint options for like $800+ USD and this sort of that plus some other changes. On the other hand it's only 100 units so it makes me wonder what's even the point? The only thing that really comes to mind for me is market research, so they can collect data telling them where they sold and how quickly/slowly, etc. to decide if they want to attempt a similar larger scale pricey trim down the line.
Yikes, I paid $45k for the Sport Tech STi in 2012 (Canadian, of course). All those locking/limited slip differentials make a HUGE difference in the snow compared to the WRX... and basically every other car on the road. $41k (or $39k) for a WRX, even if it does have a 6-speed now instead of the incredibly fragile 5-speed they were selling in the WRX back then, seems sort of insane.
Golf R all day long. Plus I am so digging my 2019 Jetta S manual I think I am switching my next car from the Mustang GT to the Golf R with an APR tune and warranty. I am old AF so my first car was a 1969 Mustang with a 351w way back in 1983 so I was looking and liking the new S550 based GTs a lot. Then I starting leasing this new Mk.7 Jetta and now I'm starting to understand German build quality and fun. Some of what I dig about this car is subtle and hard to define but considering the 72k warranty and the fact the Golf R is almost as fast as the Mustang GT it is a very compelling option. No, I am not really a "Hot Hatch" guy at all but darn it these German's just do build quality right and with this mild APR tune they will let you keep your factory warranty so then you have a Golf R that is a bit quicker than the Mustang and would arguably handle better on our mountain back roads here in East Tennessee. Yes yes I know my Jetta is assembled right down the road from me in Chattanooga but still, German quality. So yeah, Golf R for this guy now it seems. Another funny thing about the Golf R; I love to row my own gears with a good manual but this DSG is so good I think I will end up with the auto-shifter version. :-) Great review as always guys!
Would love an episode on the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. Your channel makes the vehicle understandable for a daily driver consumer and I love to see car enthusiasts show a bit of enthusiasm for the cars they review. I actually understand why someone would buy a Raptor now, lol.
I bought a 2018 wrx over a GTI or ST because of the AWD. I live in a very snowy area and that was a big deal. Interiors on GTI and probably even ST are better but AWD was the selling point. Didn't want to/afford to pay up for the difference of a Golf R or Focus RS. So for the money and if you need AWD, I think this car was a good choice
Similar story for me. I drove a Mustang for a decade year round (sanding and shoveling were a way of life in winter) and thought FWD was a god send when I picked up a used Focus (SES, nothing fancy) during that first winter with the Focus. Sold the Focus a year later for a used WRX because I just didn't enjoy driving the Focus and wanted something fun but practical and discovered that Oh My God AWD is freaking amazing. When it came time for a new car I stuck with the WRX (2018) because AWD was so awesome and I just couldn't justify the extra $10,000 - $15,000 for an STI or a Focus RS as I knew it'd never see any serious track time.
Interior rattles... needs to get broken in... Yes, it gets broken in and rattles more... and more... and mooorrreeeee. Spent the first 6 months of my ownership hunting down squeaks/rattles before conceding.
Can confirm traction control is fully off when you hold the button for 5 seconds and that it is hilarious on loose surfaces. If you want to try one on snowy roads, you’re welcome to have a go in my 2017 base when winter rolls around. I’m local-ish.
Also - no mention of the Civic Type R being the exact same price??? That's what I bought after my WRX and the CTR is on a whole other plane as far as performance goes, especially quality of damping & handling.
If I had to choose it would be the ST but not the one you're thinking of... The storm grey Mk7 Fiesta ST 200 would be my choice, it wasn't as limited as this but it was still a final limited edition and the perfect swan song to the Mk7 Fiesta, sadly you guys never got this car on your side of the pond, it would have been cool to have seen your impressions. I just wish that it came out a year earlier when I bought my Regular ST, I would have definitely spent the extra money on it brand new.
I have a 2019 WRX and you are totally right it falls flat on its face after 4500. From 3000 to 4500 it really gives you a good boost but really dies off after that. Stage 1 tune takes care of that.
Subie gang!🤘🤘. The rattles and squeaks and power dip and crappy visors and understeer and rev hang and funky ride height and plain interior, I still enjoy my reximus.

STi feels like it understeers more because the EJ25 weights more than the newer FA20.
I knew there had to be a reason
The main reason for the understeer on both wrx and STI is because of the front positive camber on the tires.

best car channel
look at the sync of the visor return. you guys are getting good. XD
These car manufacturers are getting smart, slapping primer on the car then just clear coating over it
This Is the Most underated Channel on TH-cam!!! Post Notifications On Always 😎
I always get really enthousiastic when watching your video's. The mood quickly turns when i start searching and find local prices. You can pick up a normal WRX for no less than 108k Euro (124k USD) in the Netherlands. Fml.
It’s a good morning when the straight pipes upload :)
Boxer is the nick name for the Subaru engine. The official name of the engine is a horizontally opposed or flat engine.
There are no officials in this case....
Not true, a flat engine does not have to be a boxer.
"I don't collect anything," has an Omega X-33. I love this video by the way!
Congrats guys, you guys deserve another 100,000 subscribers and more
Hey Guys! sorry if anyone mentioned this already, but the part of the word Rai (雷) means lightning, which is why it is in words like thunderstorm, raichu (as Yuri stated) and Raiden from Mortal combat、etc. Just thought you guys would like to know!
ps: awesome review/gucci gear!
Gawd I love these guys reviews. Its not boring like the others
what Subaru should have done is offer the WRX in hatchback configuration or offer a Crosstrek WRX!
That's how Subaru gets you and still making money...lol
Thanks for saying bamboozled Jacob! You guys are a breath of fresh air in car reviews.
Boxster= boxer roadster
A roadster is a convertible 2 seat car.
I drive a 2018 ford focus RS and I would take it over any of the other hot hatches on the market. Its INSANELY fast and handles incredibly well!
Raiden would have been a much better reference than Ryu. NBD just geeking hard.
LEXUriouS Kirk YESSSSS
I like your video style how you guys unload information in a conversation type of way.
Are you guys planning on doing a review of the 2019 STI?
I have a '17 Focus ST with a Roush catback exhaust and I've had a few run-ins with some WRX's. They'll always be quicker off the line than an ST because of the drivetrain but they aren't really faster. I can more than hang with a WRX but the real joy of an ST is the feel and handling.
However, I like the idea of doing a comparison: WRX vs. GTI vs. ST. And not only with performance but in feel and driveability.
For the Raiu edition wrx, it comes with a sti short throw shifter. That is the "sti" branding for the shifter
Branding implies that you can see it. I figured that was the case though. Press release wording 🤣
You can get the same option on the new Impreza and Crosstrek
Yeahhhh when they showed the shift throws.... nothing about that looked short lolll
Jakub I legit bought that Gulf livery watchband a few days ago, great minds think alike.
My man
hey guys thanks for always making such great content !
Hey Yuri and Jakub, I think it would be a good idea if you are the drivers of the zambonis cleaning the ice during a home game of the Leafs
Great idea
I thought the NFC tag on the infotainment screen was cool. Simple and fast to connect your phone through bluethooth. Would love this feature in other cars :)
Show us the underbody after 80,000 km of winter driving.
I absolutely LOVE that you guys discussed drive line shock.
That Seiko watch tho Jakub’s wearing. 👍🏼
Thanks
It's flex szn for Jakub and Yuri. Gucci fanny pack, TH-cam plaque, limited edition Subaru...
Awesome video as always! Would love to see an Audi RS3 review, or any RS for that matter.
I own an '18 Golf R and it's incredible. Just waiting to see how it handles a New Hampshire winter
14:40 Damn, you guys got a million new subs since this video came out, about 2.5 years. Not too shabby.
1.26 mln now. These guys rule.
“Linsey” is the dude driving the car lol
Boxter, Boxer. They're both Flat Engines. Love 'em!
Only thing it really needs a big wing on the back. Then it'll look like a proper subie.
Prefer no wing look, but hatch over sedan.
The wrx never got a big wing
Jasdil but it won’t have the power of a proper subie like an sti
@@joecormack7154 You can tune a WRX and make it capable of smoking an STI for not much at all. Less than $1000 if you really wanted.
WRX should not cosplay as STIs. It's sad.
Yes yes yessss guys please do more Subaru reviews !
If only they take this engine, put in a bigger turbo and put it in the STI.
sooperman12 The EJ25 has 290 lb ft anyway.
fogdood Well the new sti is going to be an FA motor probably bored out to 2.5
sooperman12 well the couldn’t they upgrade internals and other things as well?
Would love an episode on the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. Your channel makes the vehicle understandable for a daily driver consumer and I love to see car enthusiasts show a bit of enthusiasm for the cars they review. I actually understand why someone would buy a Raptor now, lol.
That's a really sweet looking color💙
I think its called the Hyundai N blue 😂

The best car reviewers back at it with another great video 👍
Interior rattles... needs to get broken in... Yes, it gets broken in and rattles more... and more... and mooorrreeeee. Spent the first 6 months of my ownership hunting down squeaks/rattles before conceding.
same.
If you have the eyesight system, that's the first culprit. I need to find something to stabilize that, or just accept complaining passengers.
Ur exhaust is supposed to be loud enough you don't hear them
Ew. That's a no go.
Can confirm traction control is fully off when you hold the button for 5 seconds and that it is hilarious on loose surfaces.
If you want to try one on snowy roads, you’re welcome to have a go in my 2017 base when winter rolls around. I’m local-ish.
I don’t think a fanny pack has ever looked more out of place on a white guy than yours does on you.... solid video though 👍
fishhead90 🙂
fishhead90 he just needs to wear it with a different outfit and imo it would look fire. I wear shoulderbags and they’re actually really useful
REALLY BRUH... GUCCI BAG 🤦♂️ don’t wear it in the video. How old are these guys?
fishhead90 you can’t buy sauce
shut up wanker Gucci is 100% italian
Wicked video guys - good run down of regular WRX vs. special WRX value. It's a great car! I had a 2015 WRX Sport trim.
I just wish that it came out a year earlier when I bought my Regular ST, I would have definitely spent the extra money on it brand new.
your good at turning a 30second video into an eternity!
Legendary: "Can you hold my Gucci fanny pack?"
JR Geoffrion ❤️
Like the music Jacob and Yuri!!
Good review fellas. Like the chemistry, no homo. Lol
Really loving the color though.
Yuri's drug dealer starter kit.
These guys are fun to watch. I was only after a review for a WRX I'm interested in and now I found myself subscribing 👍
Thanks Yas
Is the power dip at 4500 RPM similar to the infamous torque dip in the BRZ/86? Seems too similar to be coincidental.
Stephen Hendricks same engine, but just a turbo. It's in the stock tune.
SpikeRR: That was my assumption. Puzzling that Subaru hasn't managed to correct the problem.
The wrx gets boost faster than the sti, you get out of your torque curve then VTEC kicks in .... according to a report I made up
not really, tye 86 sufferes from a torque dip from below 4k rpm then they do better all the way to redline
I have a 2019 WRX and you are totally right it falls flat on its face after 4500. From 3000 to 4500 it really gives you a good boost but really dies off after that. Stage 1 tune takes care of that.
You guys need to make a Straight Pipes fanny pack.
Subie gang!🤘🤘. The rattles and squeaks and power dip and crappy visors and understeer and rev hang and funky ride height and plain interior, I still enjoy my reximus.
You pay extra for that Gucci passenger seatbelt
I learned to drive manual on a 1997 Legacy wagon. Looks like nothing has changed with the drive line shock. Never change Subaru.
So much money for a car that's gonna rot out in a few years.
Much better choices out there within the price range.
*me over here not paying attention to the wrx, but to yuri's new shirt.
I want it
