    I love your channel, and all of your videos Scotty. Lately I've watched the "EGR cleaning" video and the "clamp for radiator hoses" videos. I always learn so much here. I don't want to spend oodles of cash at the shop when I can do most of this myself, and having mostly older vehicles (1990 F250 XLT, 1998 Nissan Sentra [insert sad face here], 2000 Mazda Protege) I would be spending more than just oodles to get them running decently again.
    I'm getting a bit more comfortable tackling larger repairs, and I wanted to thank you for making these jobs a little easier to handle. Keep up the good work and REV THOSE ENGINES!

    Scotty, you should have told folks to check the EGR passages into the block etc. They often plug with carbon and need to be cleared out.

  • @oldowl4290
    @oldowl4290 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    On this particular V6 Toyota engine that he's working on, the old 3VZE (which I have) also exists the EGR probe (~6" long) which goes inside the intake plenum next to the EGR. That should be removed and cleaned as well as it gets corroded with deposits. And as you will see, there is also the EGR Modulator in front of the EGR which looks similar in that it has a round top. The EGR Modulator has 3 vacuum hoses (P, Q, R). There is a small disc-shaped filter in the top of this unit and it should be removed and cleaned out. Other things to look for in this smog system are the PAIR reed valve unit (further behind and lower from EGR), the Evap "charcoal" cannister on rear left fender, and lastly, check the inlet / oulet temps of the Catalytic converter with a laser thermometer which should be ~80 to 100 degrees in difference for a working cat If under 75, the cat is on its way out.. If under 50..replace it! Replacing the oxygen sensor down there is also not a bad idea.
    Those are all the main smog items on this engine.

  • @Inisfad
    @Inisfad 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    You really don’t want to soak the EGR valve upside down - that diaphragm is made from material, not metal, and the carb cleaner or solvent can actually destroy that. It may also be a good idea to try to clean the passages that you see, when the EGR valve is off the car, as carbon can block those passages as well.

    Scotty....EGR question here... I bet you worked on thousand of these cars back in the day.... 1980 Pontiac Sunbird with a 2.5l 151 4cyl Iron Duke. (RWD H body, you can see it on my channel). It runs really nice, but the motor starts bouncing noticeable as soon as It goes into part throttle / steady state cruise. I tried everything and found some relief with the EGR valve. As tested it opens ok with vacuum. When I remove it and block it off completely, it smooths out the shakes, to barely noticeable. I wonder if I have a leaky exhaust valve? Idles ok, pull's fine and doesn't seem to have a missfire. (carb - no computer) but the sound from the tailpipe at idle sounds like it might have something amiss.. Ls1 swap would probably get it solved for good.

    Thanks Scotty,,, and doing that for years,,, and disconnecting vacuum line and putting a screw in it,,,,, unplugging the electric,,,. Even using a block off plate,,,. But after learning more about aircraft engines,,,,. The EGR opens and let's hot exhaust into the combustion chamber,,, which cools the combustion chamber,,,, sounds weird but the hot exhaust draws Heat out of the head,,, !!!

    About blanking off the egr: most emissions check test and have to pass only on CO2 and egr has no impact on CO2, but on NOx (and mostly on cold start idling anyway)

      What?? PB Blaster and WD40 were designed to do two different things. PB Blaster in a corrosive that eats rust and is also a lubricant. WD40 is a cleaner, degreaser and protectant; not a lubricant and is crap compared to Zep, Liquid Wrench and PB Blaster.

    • @max41050
      @max41050 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      . Okay but if you bypass the egr valve won't the engine light come on ? The reason I'm asking is because my former mechanic sold me a 1995 Toyota Camry and the engine light would come on when the weather was hot but it would go off by itself when the weather was cool I found out that I had a trouble code 71 egr related I cleaned the egr valve and the code didn't go away I went underneath the car to look for the egr vsv solenoid valve and noticed that one of the little vacuum hoses was discontinued purposely my former mechanic had done a bypass on the egr and not only that the other two little vacuum hoses that are connected to the vsv valve were switched I found this out after looking at the Haynes repair manual to find out the proper location for each hoses so I reconnected the 3 little vacuum hoses in their proper place and the engine light issue was fixed . That is why I'm asking this question because I'm thinking if my engine will run better if I bypass the egr valve it might be worth doing it I can always reconnect the hoses back in their proper place when the time comes to smog the car.

    2005 Ford Taurus, 188,000 miles. When the outside air is warm (40°) or higher the car starts at a high idle and takes about 3 minutes to drop down under 1000 rpms. After it has reached operating temp it purrs like a kitten. When it is cold out, the colder it is the harder it is to start. It revs up to 2100 or so rpms then drops right down to nothing. It takes a few tries to get it to run, but runs around 1500 rpms until it starts to warm up. The only emission part I have not replaced is the EGR. No check engine light or codes have ever helped. What are your thoughts? PS it's hard to get rid of a car that still gets up to 27mpg, runs, and is still quite a solid car for its age.

    Scotty, I have a 2015 GX 460 Lexus and had the dealership put a new ERC Value in it after the check in light came on a few times. This weekend the check engine light came on again so I took it to a different automotive shop and the owner said the code reader says it needs a new ERC Value. I told him Lexus had put a new one in the car in Jan. I think I'm gonna ask him to clean it now. Does carbon build up in other areas besides the ERC Value. Wish I was more of a DIY'er, but don't know much about car engines.
