      @@bluedragon4 i think, at least for me, when we say UNDERRATED, we mean 2 things (or 1 of 2 things at least) 1) mentioned up there with Whitney and Mariah as one of the top female voices of all time, with just pure talent and 2) still pretty relevant and WELL known with the "younger" generation...
      As an 80s kid and big wrestling fan my entire 41 years being alive lol, I'll never forget Cyndi, and personally i think she is absolutely right up there, probably on even ground,,with Whitney Houston, and Lady Gaga, and IMHO, better than Mariah Carey, in terms of just such a beautiful, booming, amazing singing voice... but again, a lot of people dont really fully realize that. OMG, never rated her that highly, as I thought she just had a few commercial hits and was never really a serious singer (nice songs, unique voice, and quirky character, but I was being so unfair to her incredible talent and professionalism). I think it's significant, her little address to the audience about not giving one's power away. In staying true to herself, she may have missed some of the limelight, but she can be proud of her longevity in the business, the real respect she has well-earned from fellow professionals, and the genuine fans. She must know that she leaves many celebrated singers standing to have the confidence not to feel she has to crave the hype. Thank you for your review! I saw Cyndi Lauper in 2007. It was a summer festival thing with many different acts. She played for an hour. And I was totally shocked and blown away. She was phenomenal with this massive stage presence. And what I was really surprised by was how powerful her voice was live. It carried across the stadium. She rocked it with that voice. I never forgot that. I always liked her and knew her from her hits. And she sings great on her albums, but live I did not expect that. She had one of the greatest live voices I had heard at any show. Then I found out she had been opera trained early in her career. You can tell. It’s that powerful.

    Cyndi's spartan vocal hygiene and technique allowed her to keep her voice intact for 3 decades! In her autobiography, she stated her range was 3 and a half octaves (or 4,on a good day).
    In the "Blue Angel"/"She's so Unusual"/"True Colors" (1980 - 1987) era, her tone was very sharp throughout her middle/upper range. She was very direct in her vocal delivery and although she rarely utilized techniques such as riffs and runs, her voice was outstandingly flexible, granting her the ability to reach for belted B5s as well as high head voice/whistle notes without a sign of fatigue. Since she was singing a lot of punk/pop punk/rockabilly material around that time, she would frequently utilize distortion ("Money Changes Everything", "Maybe He'll Know").
    A stylistic shift sealed by her 1989 release "A Night to Remember" allowed her to approach her repertoire in a more pop-rock aesthetic. She showed the ability to go for her craziest vocals from the previous era, additionally exploring a more toned down yet still vocally challenging repertoire ("I Drove All Night", "My First Night Without You"). She also started building up spectacular slides up her range (e.g. to a belted A5 in "Dancing With a Stranger" in Chile) as well as tasteful ad-libs in head voice.
    The "The World is Stone"/"Hat Full of Stars"/"Twelve Deadly Cyns... and Then Some" (1992-1995) period was her most experimental both artistically and vocally. She wasn't afraid of exploring a variety of different tones and stylistic grounds across her entire range (nasal, crystalline, dark; gospel-like belting), reaching up to powerful Bb6s in her live rendition of the song "Lies" or mixed B5s in "River Deep, Mountain High".
    In the ""Sisters of Avalon"/"Shine EP" (1996-2002) era, Cyndi's voice started reaching maturity due to age and pregnancy. Her tone started becoming rounder and much more natural (most noticeably in songs such as "Fall Into Your Dreams" or "Mother"), still allowing her to express emotions such as anger or bitterness with a convincing edge (e.g. the climactic part of the song "Sisters of Avalon" or the almost wailing head voice/whistle notes in "Say a Prayer" ).
    In my opinion (and her very own opinion too), she was in the best vocal condition in the "At Last"/"Shine CD" (2003 - 2005) era . She utilized jazzy and soulful vocal techniques and her tone was particularly beautiful and rich. Her lows started gaining more weight and color ("Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"), although she never hesitated to reach the top of her belting range (A5, Bb5) with resonance and a similarly exciting depth.
    Between the previous and the "The Body Acoustic"/"Bring Ya to the Brink" (2006 - 2009) era, her voice started gaining inconsistent natural rasp, but there were no other significant changes in her vocal condition. During her "Bring Ya to the Brink" tour, there seemed to be minor tension in her upper belting range, which still didn't stop her from sustaining G5s, G#5s (and even A5s in her live renditions of the song "Sisters of Avalon") effortlessly.
    In the "Memphis Blues" (2010-2012) era, her voice was particularly soulful and agile. She experimented with vocal stylings, using bluesy riffs, crescendos and a very characteristic, breathy (even falsetto-like) mixed voice that she had also used in her cover of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Goin' On" (1986). Although she focused on her lower and middle range, she never struggled to go for time-stopping upper belts (even up to a G#5). However, a few of her F5 attempts in "I'm Gonna Be Strong" came across as underwhelming.
    Sadly, 2013 (the "She's so Unusual 30th Anniversary" era; 2013 - 2015) was the year when her voice started changing drastically. Because of age, her battle with psoriasis and constant touring, her tone started getting raspier and heavier, making her upper range less accessible. She somehow managed to sustain the spectacular G5s in "Money Changes Everything" (despite some underwhelming or failed attempts) or hit quick G5s in "True Colors". Surprisingly, she sustained a C#6 whistle in "When You Were Mine" in 2013.
    NOW: The arguably misguided country release "Detour" came with an even greater struggle. Although her middle range was relatively comfortable, especially in the beginning of 2016, most of her upper range was lost. Unhealthy rasp hindered her once brilliant belting, resulting in cracks and throaty hollering.
    In 2017, despite the fact that she started lowering the key of some of her most challenging songs for the very first time, her flexibility, precision and power worsened.
    Last month, she performed at the Hollywood Bowl and a slight improvement was noticeable. She still failed to sustain the "Money Changes Everything" high notes properly and some of the other "money notes" from her heyday didn't come out well, to put it simply. The highlight of the show was "I'm Gonna Be Strong" , sung for the first time since 2014 in a lowered key, which she handled confidently. The final D5 (instead of the original F5) sounded really strong.
    I recommend you watch the following performances by Cyndi:
    "Walk on By", "I Drove All Night" or "Money Changes Everything" (from Live... At Last);
    "Carey" (Joni Mitchell tribute);
    "Baby Workout" (live in Paris).
    You will not be disappointed!
