It’s not one you guys got to test but blows my mind that you didn’t at all test, and that was the myth that a penny or other coin on a railroad track could de-rail a train! But knowing you guys, even if it didn’t work which it doesn’t I don’t think, you would’ve derailed it anyway for the shot and I can see why the studio and everyone could’ve said pass ! Haha

Yeap, have to repeat what Adam's just said.
Each time I go back through the failed/incomplete ideas folder, I learn something new each and every time.
Seeing that process, seeing that foundation change. How the process that lead to that stuff coming out the way it did.
Some of the time your best teacher is going to be current-you going over old-you's work.

    • @3d_dean975
      @3d_dean975 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Looking at old work teaches you so much. Every failure is a new starting point. There are somethings I have done in failed projects that I will definitely be doing again. Ideas that didn't quite work, but this time I have the extra knowledge and skill set to do it better and make it work. A failure is not a learning opportunity. Recently, I went through and organized my computers files, and oh man, some of my attempts at projects were bad and fundamentally flawed, but they were the first step to developing that skill set.
Also documenting your process and thoughts on a project helps so much when returning to it. First you remember more than you otherwise would. Second you can look and see where you went wrong and what you can improve. Optimizing your workflow and constantly improving and increasing that skill set. The final thing I will say is have a common repository for yourself and stay organized with your projects. It makes things so much easier. I had to hunt down cad, data sheets and what ever other unsorted crap past me lazily pit in my home directory, documents, downloads, and thrown about my main folder. It was a mess.

This is a true story. In the early 1970's, after I graduated high school, I, like any teenage boy, wanted to attract women. I worked a job and ended up buying my own clothes. But there was a place in nearby Waukegan that sold clothes that were a bit over_the_top and I started buying and wearing them. A normal look for me was me in a long red coat with a very long scarf and a hat. I just made that look up myself. I later dressed up like that and went to a coffee house and people started asking me if I was a Doctor Who fan. I had NEVER heard of Doctor Who but I looked into it and found I that I was accidently dressing like Tom Baker!

There was a silly simple myth that always bothered me: earwax candles. When MythBusters finds a myth to be untrue, the next step is usually to figure out how to MAKE it work. With earwax candle they scraped the wax, smushed it together, it didn't burn, and they declared you can't make an earwax candle. Why didn't you guys render the fat? Boil the wax in some water to separate the impurities and get pure earwax, then try to make a candle out of that.

I do a lot of restoration work on cars and motorcycles, as well as construction, woodwork, etc. and I started taking notes, videos, and photos during the process and it’s proved immensely helpful to myself but also to my friends and family for their own projects or when I’m explaining something I did that they don’t quite understand.

I too would love to see a collaboration between yourself and Ricky Jay. I became aware of Mr. Jay in a very weird way - one of only two freakish things that have ever happened in my life. One night when I was a kid I saw Ricky on a TV show, like The Tonight Show or whatever, and he demonstrated his incredible card-throwing skills. If I recall correctly, he threw an entire deck high into the air above the studio audience's heads, and had the entire deck in the air by the time the first one fell to the ground. I thought that was amazing and I wished I could learn how to do that. Here's the freakish part - not long after, I am walking around my apartment complex where we lived, and I see a book laying there. I go to it and pick it up, and the title is "Cards as Weapons", by Ricky Jay himself. Reading this book taught me how to throw cards, although I can barely make it sting against bare skin. I cannot penetrate a watermelon or cut (or even HIT) string cheese or any of his other stunts. But I can get them to go pretty far, so I still love to buy an occasional deck of cards and make sure that one of my neighbors a couple houses away wakes up in the morning and wonders "Who the hell spilled a deck of cards in my back yard last night???"

I have a vague memory of jumping into a dumpster when I was a little kid. I remember being covered in egg and finding a hand gun and I couldn't understand why I got in trouble. Lesson eventually learned: don't jump into random dumpsters. For a short time I thought it was the thing to do and couldn't understand why people didn't. I wasn't the smartest kid.

I've been noticing that myths that have been tested on mythbusters are coming back from the younger generation. Like I just saw one about the brace position in aircrafts is supposed to kill the passengers. I wish there was a way to get mythbusters back into the zeitgeist.

    • @greggv8

Look for Streamlined Mythbusters or "smyths". Take a Mythbusters episode and cut out all the repetition and going back and forth between myths so that it's re-arranged to present the essentials of each myth and experiment in a linear fashion. Some "smyth" editors do get a bit over zealous in their trimming, like the one about the office worker who smashed through an "unbreakable" window and fell to his death while demonstrating how it was unbreakable. The person who edited that one cut out all but the final test that worked and the part about the person who went through the window by ramming it with a shoulder, applying the force to too small of an area.

Someone ask Adam what he thinks about Streamlined Mythbusters or "Smyths" where people edit out all the repetition and the going back and forth between myths so each myth and experiment is presented in a linear fashion. Much more comprehensible for people who get confused by shows that switch around between plot threads and/or have attention deficit issues.

What if you were to build a tie with the steel belting in a square pattern. So, when you need to drive on sandy surfaces you just reduce the pressure and it takes a squarish shape?
Fill it back up and it's round again.

I still think about the myth busting of drunk people peeing on electric fence / railroad tracks. For me, the biggest omission was that when people urinate, it doesn't just fall out do to gravity. There are also muscles that help aid in urination.
The main stand point in the bust was that urine is fast moving balls of liquid...

I know I’m not a member, it’s not even a question but you might want to hear about it.
modern cars with flyby wire controls (steer, brake, and gas) can theoretically be controlled via OBD2 connection and some sort of program to decode and code it all into data that would respond very well to force feedback steering wheels designed for video games. Couple that with a camera and you have a 1-1 scale RC car that you can crash without ruining makeshift steering rigs. Grant would have been all over it had he been around today, and RC cars were needed

Hey, I just want to say that if you ever wanted to make a show called “Myth Crackers” that is total legally distinct from any pre-existing project, where you test urban legends and stories, I would watch every episode.
If you invited great minds like Kyle Hill to be involved then it would be appointment viewing.
