Do you mean, "ultimately, there are only two chords given any root and scale," or that, "in Phrygian, you can rely entirely on the I and II chords and don't need the rest," or, "in Phrygian, if you base any chord choice on anything else but Lydian, it's not really Phrygian anymore" or something else?
more the latter. the way i understood what he was saying is that those chords are the ones that capture the sound of the mode, so if you use any others you're not in that mode anymore
@@cicolas_nage makes me wonder, what I f you alternate i and bvii? Would the minor tonality of bvii, driven by b2, have the same effect? Also, since i usually would come with bVII and ii° in Aeolian, would a minor vii chord serve as a reminder that "we're more minor than minor" to the listener?
I think you have the general idea. I know just using two chord seems limiting. The key is playing these two chords in different voicings and inversions, or techniques. This gives you unlimited creative options when writing music
