For me personally when it comes to guitar theory and explaining it Brian is second to none. I always thought theory was just beyond me and I would never twig but slowly slowly and. ( literally at the beginning by accident) I plodded along and it has made a significant difference and has definitely increased my enjoyment on our instrument. My only regret is not meeting Brian decades ago but feel so lucky to have found him now and know I owe him big time. Cheers everybody.
I would like encourage anyone who happens to find Brian’s contents helpful, go ahead and besides acknowledging his kind efforts with adorable words, which is a beautiful gesture on its own, donate some as a sign of genuine appreciation. Cuz yall know how desperately we were looking to know these stuff before…
Peter Jackson and Oliver Stone … two geniuses who are known to create exceedingly long film productions of extreme quality, whilst maintaining ultimate interest and attention throughout the many hours involved in their presentations. Brian Kelly … a genius who creates guitar theory lessons of extreme quality, whilst maintaining ultimate interest and attention throughout the many hours involved in their presentations. Now ... as an added bonus, we lucky Zombies have just been provided with an awesome summary of many years of hard work, condensed into 60 minutes!! Well done Brian … so much appreciated mister!!
Thanks for the words Phil! I wouldn't call myself a "genius" by any means, but if you want to call me that I won't argue 🤣. But seriously...this is just the arithmetic. If someone was able to simplify "jazz", that person would be a genius!
30 years ago I had a music prodigy teaching me, he was 21 my age and still a distant friend, although I remember everything he tried to tell me, I can only make sense of about 60% of it, and only actually apply about 20% of it, thank you Brian for finally putting all these missing pieces into my puzzle. And helping me realize knowing it all will never happen😅
I would like to add to Brian's response to the person who wrote to him and said, "If music theory is so simple, why do you have so many videos." But first I want to add, as so many people have, that Brian is second to none as a guitar teacher. I've learned more from him in the past 2-3 years than I learned in the previous 50+ years. My thoughts on why there are a lot of videos: *Some people want to go in more depth on certain topics than others do. *Some people (me, a prime example) need to hear the same or similar thing multiple for it to really sink in. *Not everyone will see any given video, so if he just did one video that dealt with triads, no everyone would see it. *Explanations can be approached from different angles, or combining various other knowledge bits, thus giving a fresh perspective on the topics. *There are an almost endless number of topics to cover - not everyone is interested in the same thing. *MANY of Brian's videos are in response to a question or point of confusion to his students (that is, US), so he's being attentive to, and responsive to his students, which is a very admiral trait. *As good as Brian is (and he's the best), he's still always trying to improve, expand, clarify, provide more value to his students. I welcome all of you to add to my list, because I'm sure I've missed some very important aspects!
60 minutes my ankle! It took me 2 hours to watch this, pausing and repeating. Plus I'll have to watch it again a few more times.LOL. Thanks for the best overall guitar theory view that I have seen in my 7 decades on this planet. I for sure at least owe you a hot coffee or cold brewski.
If you only need one channel to learn guitar. This is it, if I do come across another I always come back here to see how Zombie guitar would explain it, and it’s always the simpler better explanation
Brian, I have been playing guitar for many years and began writing and singing originals since 2012. I was limited on my knowledge of guitar as far as song-writing is concerned and found it difficult to put all the pieces together. I began understanding patterns and knew the CAGED system somewhat, but it was not sticking. After watching your video, which I paused 8 million times to grasp it, I feel so much better in my ability to play all the way up the neck. In particular, your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string techniques for the CAGED system...Mind Blowing! I know if I slide up to a G at the tenth fret on the A string, my two options there are the C-Shape and the A Shape! Many tutorials out there dance around teaching and really seem to leave out the patterns to learn for beginners or at least they are difficult to find. Thank you for putting this video together! I can't believe this doesn't have millions of views considering what a guitar player can learn by just sitting down, taking some notes, and working through, with guitar in hand, how all this comes together! As you say, you only have to really truly learn it once and then practice. High fives all around!🎸🎤
I've been playing guitar since I was 16, for all the wrong reasons I might add, but I've always struggled with remembering all the shapes, formulas and patterns. I keep coming back to it and which is why I appreciate channels like Zombie Guitar. Cheers!
You have by far Explained basic music and Guitar theory, Circle of fifths, Triads scales etc, In the most comprehensive 60 minutes I've ever seen., You seem to have a gift for breaking down complicated concepts, into bite sized Digestible pieces. Keep up the good work,.. thanks
As a Scientist/Mathematician, your video really resonated with me being onto learning the theory for 1.5 years now. What an enjoyable journey. Your approach is very simular to what I am currently working on as a Mastery of Root Triads 3NPS Pentatonic Triad shapes that connect to 3NPS to give you all chord progressions for any Key. This has simplied the need to learn multiple shapes since the pattern connects to itself in a repeating way of finding the Root on any string and Run on the track until you hit the Pentatonic. Thanks so much for your insight on this. Still flushing it out as a newbie, but what a difference simplicity makes. It confirms to me that it is Solid Way, as a starting point for a Building block to help others.
i’ve been playing for about 10 months , and have stayed away from learning music theory or anything , but listening to you explain things like solos and theory is mind blowing ! never stop what you do i’m pretty sure you save alot of people like me and make things so much easier ! thank you !
Brian seriously deserves more subs. Here soon, I'm going to get that lifetime membership on the site. It's going to be a few weeks or so, but as soon as possible. Love the way this guy teaches theory.
Of all the guitar videos I've been "ping ponging" around with, this is the first time I've actually understood the overall picture. I so needed this and finally have a clear goal. Thank you Brian, you are the best and much appreciated!
What makes Brian so effective is his low tolerance for bullsh*t. Brian strips a concept down to its understandable essence. Example in this vid: A-string home box. OH! NOW I see it! His vid on the CAGED system is masterful: root on low E? E or G shape. Period. Root on A string? A or C shape. Period. Root on D string: D shape. Period.
Just like many of the comments before mine, this video is what I have been hoping to stumble across. You explain the big picture which is what I needed and how my brain works. Now I can more easily move forward with the task of memorizing because it all makes sense in the big picture. Thank You!
between you , and Lizzio, from signals music, i get all the theory i need .. watching you both, has made music theory so easy to understand, that i am the wizard, of my old band they come to me with questions
You are a very patient individual. Thank you so much for your time in making so many videos about different ways to explain theory. I hope you don't feel like you are frustrated with making these videos because you truly do help many people and I hope I speak for many, we sincerely appreciate it!!!❤
"It is the interest of the guitar students to preserve the most fundamental rules as explained by Brian, and on conditions fair, equal, and applicable to all." Thanks for your continuing effort to beat the fundamentals into my head, it's working. I knew everything you were going to say after the first 10 minutes thanks to watching your videos over the past year. All I want to enjoy from guitar is playing chord progressions and fills between each chord and you're a master of explaining that. 💯
Amazing video, you went through the cage system abit quick in terms of the chord numbers and shapes. Also most other videos focus on caged chords to find the same chord in different positions, which is less useful atleast to me. Subbed!
Great video, for an older guitar player this was simple to understand. Currently I'm laid up with a torn rotator cuff, might as well learn from someone that explains guitar theory in a the easiest non complicated way I've ever seen. Thank you!
Awesome lesson Brian. I finally get it. Love the 3 pattern model. After practicing that for a while I was soloing seamlessly over that Em / G Major progression. You're the best.
I am blown away by how you give us so much info. I really enjoyed that vid where you talk about your life as a rock star. Of course we are here to learn more about playing guitar, but that little bio was great. I'll bet your kid(s) wonder how you could leave that behind. Your wife is probably glad that you did. LOL!
Don't worry about the haters, you're awesome, and I love your style. I'm trying to develop that flair you have for doing the scales that makes it sound like music 🎶 As a newbie I suppose I shouldn't be so hard on myself.
Very good Big B you always explain things nice 🙂☺️. Lets see. A, A# , B, C, C#, D, D# , E, F , F#. G , G#. Yep 12 keys. Always good info thanks man 😎👋✌️✌️🎸🎸. Btw I have Boss Katana Artist II guitar amp. I noticed 😅😅✌️✌️
A couple things I'm not sure I've noticed before. 1) Learn the note numbers of the CAGED chords shapes; and 2) the chords of a key can fit in pentatonic position one. Good topics.
Keep in mind that regarding #2...the chords of a key can fit into any of the 5 pentatonic positions, because ANY chord can be played ANYWHERE on the fretboard. I just used pentatonic position #1 for the sake of example 🎸
At around 19:35 when you talk about the Dm chord being outside the Gmaj key. Since that chord works in line with the Gmaj Mixolydian scale mode because of the flat 7th (F note). I’m curious, would that key using the Dm chord be call the key of Gmaj Mixolydian? Or since GMix is just a mode of Cmaj, would the key be Cmaj, in the mode of GMix?
I’ll give it a try. Mixolydian is always major. D minor can in fact (in different keys) be the second (dorian), the third (phrygian) or the sixth (aeolian - usually referred to as just minor). The D minor chord is not a part of the G major scale, because the notes «available» in that key does not contain the note that makes up a D minor chord, but rather a D major chord. In the key of G major the D major chord is the fifth chord, and if you start from the fifth note in that scale, you play D mixolydian. Why mixolydian? Because if you try to use the D major scale (ionian) over the D major chord when in the key of G major, it will be and sound out of key. G mixolydian is over the G major chord in the key of C major…
A great summary of the guitar theory. Thanks, Brian. Can make videos with applications of this theory over songs, like Comfortably Numb or Hôtel California ?
Hi Brian, so cool stuff you teach me who never understand the music theory was. You made it simple clear and easy to understand. Thank you so very much. By the wayI love your signature guitar tone too. A dreamy sound. Would you sometime show and explain us what are on your pedalboard ?
Hey thanks for the words! In most of my vids I was just recording straight into my computer using the "S-Gear" amp sim program on the "heaven" preset 😀
The answer is in the chords❤ diminished double stops and you could see all the chords on the fretboard❤ time put in when you don't have to think about your language
Hello Brian Thank you for the videos. You mentioned in a Zombie Guitar video (I'm not sure if you talked about it on YT as well) that we need to change the scale when playing a (12 bar) blues solo based on each chord, but mentioned here that it is a misconception that the scale needs to change throughout the song. Just wanted to know why that's the case, thanks.
Yup you are talking about approach #3 in my "4 approaches to soloing over a 12-bar blues progression". Two things about that: 1.) When you "switch pentatonics" over a I IV V progression (or any progression in which all chords are from the same key), you aren't actually switching scales. You are still remaining in key. I did a whole video on the multiple pentatonics thing here: th-cam.com/video/jNubvZbZ9k0/w-d-xo.html In short, you can compare the notes of the overall G major scale to the notes of the "3 pentatonics" found in the key: G major scale: G A B C D E F# G major/Em pent: G A B D E C major/Am pent: C D E G A D major pent/Bm pent: D E F# A B 2.) That video is about "blues theory", which is a different way of thinking than "diatonic theory". The goal in blues theory is usually to combine major and minor tonalities, and this can be done by targeting chord tones of the dominant 7th form of each underlying chord. Ultimately you're not thinking "one scale per chord". Rather you're thinking "one dominant 7th chord framework per chord". But with regards to diatonic music theory where you are considering which scale(s) to play over, say a I vi V IV progression, there's no need to play a different 7-note diatonic scale for each chord. You only need the one key scale! 🎸
@zombieguitar appreciate all your training videos. I don't know how anyone can criticize free education. Since there is a lot of stuff to memorize, would it be helpful to write everything down? Or do you have printed material you can sell on your site or Patreon? Thanks for the videos
@@allboutthemojo hey have you checked out the "In-Depth Lesson Portal" section of the site? That section is where the "website versions" of all my TH-cam vids can be found. The website versions all have a detailed written lesson with it, including the visuals used in the vids, and usually some associated video backing tracks too. I always direct people over to that section. It's almost like Zombie Guitar 2.0 😁
@@oliviernahmias9112 gotcha... That was referring to the 2 remaining notes that are missing from the pentatonic to complete the full 7-note diatonic scale. G major pentatonic: G A B D E G major: G A B C D E F# Remember the pentatonic scale is 5/7 of the diatonic scale 😁
Perhaps clickbait titled comedy song shorts making fun of the algorithm ect by Brian could be the ultimate solution. Give the algorithm what it wants to increase guitar zombie traffic a lot! While providing therapeutic trolling relief. Thats the genre of music I'm mostly working towards. Comedy trolling ala weird al yankovich with overtones of gilmour and pantera. Your funny af when your having fun with it. You could kill it with traffic increase that way. Blessed day B

G mixolydian is over the G major chord in the key of C major…
Great vid you covered some serious ground.
A great summary of the guitar theory. Thanks, Brian. Can make videos with applications of this theory over songs, like Comfortably Numb or Hôtel California ?
Yes! I think a Hotel Cali solo breakdown would be a great vid. It's on the list! 😁
Holes in my Theory, holes in my head, holes in my music you filled, I'm still not dead!
I love the fact,on guitar, you figure out all the theory for a key.you know every key
Love that amp sound. Can you share what you're using?
I use "S Gear" for all my TH-cam vids. I just play around with the presets to find a tone that I like...usually "Heaven" or "Plexmonster" 😁
"It's just 7 seven notes" was the a-ha moment for me, 2 years ago. ❤

You are the best...I love my theory nerd...
Plenty of light bulb moments for me. Thank you Brian.

THANK YOU. Simplicity for a 40 yr drummer learning guitar
I’d like to know what effects you got going on your guitar for those chords dude those are dreamy sounds

Hello Brian
Thank you for the videos.
Two things about that:
1.) When you "switch pentatonics" over a I IV V progression (or any progression in which all chords are from the same key), you aren't actually switching scales. You are still remaining in key. I did a whole video on the multiple pentatonics thing here: th-cam.com/video/jNubvZbZ9k0/w-d-xo.html
In short, you can compare the notes of the overall G major scale to the notes of the "3 pentatonics" found in the key:
G major scale: G A B C D E F#
G major/Em pent: G A B D E
C major/Am pent: C D E G A
D major pent/Bm pent: D E F# A B
2.) That video is about "blues theory", which is a different way of thinking than "diatonic theory".
@@zombieguitar thanks . I will take a look
Best guitar teacher on YT bar none “just cheat”
The content will continue a century from now.
What guitar are you playing on this video please
Very impressive video… the video layout, the teaching skill set, etc. - too bad you’re not a high school teacher, our society would be a better place.
Hello Brian. I have a question. What do you mean the notes in between? Trying to figure it out myself. Maybe I need to practice more. Thank you
Hey I'm not sure I understand the question. Do you have a timestamp in the video that you're referring to?
@zombieguitar hello. It was the key of E minor or G major in adding the extra 2 notes. 30 minutes into the video pentatonic scale.
@@oliviernahmias9112 gotcha...
That was referring to the 2 remaining notes that are missing from the pentatonic to complete the full 7-note diatonic scale.
G major pentatonic: G A B D E
G major: G A B C D E F#
Remember the pentatonic scale is 5/7 of the diatonic scale 😁
@@zombieguitar thank you. I will have to practice that. It was the black notes that were in the box pattern. I appreciate you helping me out Brian
Thanks.
What brand of guitar is Brian using?
OK, one thing i have been wondering, and i probably asked you this before, and forgot
that tone, what do you have your guitar running through
Hey Brian, just a little tip for you to the spanish pronunciation of the B (Si) note: just spell it as "see" in english. Cheers again master!
Nice thanks! Cheers 😁
😂😂just to say I appreciate your work a lot and i getting better living your vid thanks dude 😎
4am where I am...I think you're finally penetrating into this numbskull of mine...your teaching is for those who listen and not just hear ..tks man
Thanks for being one of the ones who listen! Much appreciated 🙏
I like long videos. Shorts are the worst. I don't click on vids under 10 min. Im old though so there is that
Brian, you are an island of reality in an ocean of diarrhea. Please keep up the good work!
short for the short attention span, we need length, I'm not going for the tattoo of circle of 5th. ENCYCLOPEDIA
um.... you mean, MUSIC THEORY???? never heard of "guitar theory"..... and i play guitars
@@chriskeel3096 things like the CAGED system and the 5 pentatonic positions are guitar specific, therefore "guitar theory".
