Spending too much time in a sedentary position and not being physically active is a problem around the world. In the UK, 20 million people don't do any exercise at all. Finland used to have one of the highest mortality rates from heart disease but it's managed to buck the trend. Dan and Catherine talk about Finland's experience and teach you new English vocabulary.

As a couch potato, my lifestyle is rather sedentary, however, I do spend time doing chores and I also ride my stationary bike in the basement. Thank you for this amazing lesson!

    1. 1:35 5:10 life expectancy
    2. 2:10 shirker
    3. 2:24 stern
    4. 2:46 3:26 tongue-in-cheek
    5. 3:44 clipboard
““ I lead a sedentary lifestyle, sitting at the desk for roughly 8 to 9 hours a day. Terribly enough, I'm also an exercise shirker. I'm aware of the health consequences this habit brings, but I can't shake it off. I wish one day there would be a stern lady with a clipboard coming to me and motivating me to improve my life expectancy. The story is purely tongue-in-cheek in nature.“

I'm addicted to excersising, but I hate sitting. Even on a chair, sometimes I lay. I lay for 12+ hours a day for sure. I know it's not healthy, but this is my confortable position and I try to move around every 20-30 minutes or so, madturbate, do chores and go cycling nearly every day for 1-4 hours.

Sometimes i think i am sedentary person. When i came down i watch TH-cam a lot. But of course it's really bad for our health. Now i try to do some planks. But honestly i don't know it's useful or not. But anyways i think it's good for our metabolism. When i was a sedentary lifestyle i was overweight. That's the problem

2.Mary stirks having a household chore. That is a reason of her messy home.

    What is a sedentary lifestyle?

    • @bbclearningenglish
      @bbclearningenglish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

It's a lifestyle that involves a lot of sitting and not much exercise. Watch the video for more explanation.

Modern-day people are leading to sedentary lifestyle because they're sitting too much working very hard and playing computer games. They have to move for their health.
Finland has been successful in beating sedentary lifestyle and now it's has became one of the healthiest countries. They could tackle heart disease and obesity. As a result, Finnish life expectancy has risen by 10 years!
Because Finland has a lot of state involvement.
If you're an exercise shirker, you avoid doing exercise because you don't like to take exercise and you're too lazy to do just that.
The authorities kind of a stern lady with a clipboard will come and visit you. She won't to drag you out of the house to do exercise, but she want to encourage you to eat well and take regular exercise!
It's quite tongue-in-cheek - humour and not taken seriously. but it's very effective!
Well, it's time for us to go out and take exercise.
    Turn off your tech!
