    Well did my ultra yesterday and it's a learning experience.
    Grab that gpx file the day before, they always update the bleeding thing, due to access rights and other things changing. Ended up doing over 40 instead of 37 miles.
    Food needs to be on point, I was close but towards the end my guts did go inside out.
    Eat and walk on the tough uphills, run everywhere else and pace yourself.
    Padded shoes!!! Yes my Altra mont blancs were brilliant, but towards the last few miles i was aching for more cushion.
    My ankle gave out, and had to walk most of the last 10k, repeated going through moorland took it's toll.
    Which was a crying shame, as held second for a good while until then, still made 20th so not bad for my first.
    Had a lot of fun doing it for sure, I'll certainly be repeating it.

      The final bit always hurts, especially on moorland… well done though - great stuff. Interesting to hear you wanted more cushion at the end but glad the MBs worked..

    Your going to be all over that Boa system James! The amount of changes you make to your lacing to make it work for you I'm sure having those two dials in different areas will work really well. I've gone to far into minimal shoes to even consider these maximal shoes now. I do love my lone peaks and escalante's but won't be going any higher than that in stack height.

    • @movemorenowjames
      @movemorenowjames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Minimal is good and feels great, especially in the woods and proper trails … will definitely experiment soon. 30 mm is pretty max cushioned but the good thing with Altra is that I find you sit into the cushion more as apposed to sitting on top on it like some other brands.

      I was wearing the Hoka Speedgoats for a while. Ended up ditching them after toe box issues. Wore the INOV8 TerraUltra G270 for a bit and they got me loving the lower stack height again! Had some durability issues so moved on. Just tried the Timp’s but not liking the outsole grip. Trying the MB now but also thinking of getting a pair of Superiors or Lone Peak’s for a lower stack height. Do you have experience in the Superiors??

    I have changed the insoles with those of the Torins after 200 km. Then the shoe is really fun. It does scratch slightly at the arch but then the shoe is even more bouncy - the actual insole seems more like a rockblade to me. Unfortunately, I do not get a good lockdown without pressure points. The front eyelets of the laces I can not use at all. Fortunately, even with loose lacing I do not really slip much. Nevertheless, during downhill my feed stand at the end of the toe box. Am curious how that affects the long run - blister party?

    • @movemorenowjames
      @movemorenowjames  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for this , good feedback. Personally I should have maybe gone for 1/2 a size down, but that means I do have loads of room up front and zero blisters on the downs… I also added some extra padding (stuck on some pads) to the tongue which has really helped with taking the pressure off.

    I have an Inov8 TerraUltra for serious stuff, but could do with a more cushioned shoe for easier terrain.
    So MB seems to fit the bill.
    I have worn through a pair of Escalantes, which I did like. Would you say they size similar?
    I actually prefer an unstructured heel. I have sticky out heel spurs, so heel cups are only a problem.
    I did put my big toe through the upper of the Escalantes, fixed with ShoeGoo. Guess you could add a thick layer of ShoeGoo to the MB to improve protection, though it would look rather scruffy

    A very help comparison between the two mate, I’ve been looking at getting a pair of altra for a 20 mile event around Kielder reservoir in April. With most of it on fire roads and gravel cycle paths, I was looking at the Olympus but now I’m more interested in the Mont Blanc but, I have a couple of question on the Mont Blanc, how is the drainage and also the fit are they due to size or better to go a 1/2 size up.

    • @movemorenowjames
      @movemorenowjames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I would not go up 1/2 a size as already a little long but fine . Re drainage, got to be honest - no idea but would say the material used almost has a Lycra feel , therefore might be more absorbent than the Olympus.
      Definitely a good choice for harder packed roads!

  • @TheDeterminedRunner
    @TheDeterminedRunner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The material at the front of the Mont Blanc looks a lot more creased, I'm guessing there's a bit more volume in the depth of the forefoot?

    Hi thx for your reviews 👍 I have a question re Monta BLANC and would like your opinion. First this year I’ve been struggling with Morten’s Neuroma and the only shoe I can ware is the Altra’s and I have a pair Paradigm but I want to get a trail shoe. Now the Lone Peak hasn’t got enough stack bight for me and from what I see the Olympus sole just wares out to fast as it’s got that foam part whereas the Mont Blancs hole sole is covered with the Vibram sole. I know the shoe is marketed as a racer but apparently not good enough as the healcup doesn’t give enough support but for a casual runner/hiker I’m not going to have those technical challenges and think this is a creat shoe for my use as it’s light and the midsole and sole is just great. What do you think

    • @movemorenowjames
      @movemorenowjames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doug hi. I personally think the Olympus is actually the best bet, it has a full vibram outsole whereas the MB has a lite-base version, which unfortunately does wear quickly. The Olympus is also a little wider and I think the 5 has a softer upper than the 4 (which I have) …
      With Morton’s, from personally experience I think keeping you big toe straight is key, and zero drop helped as reduced pressure on front foot. (Touch wood but I have not had it for years now since I switch solely to wide and zero)
      Good luck..

    Great video, James. I'm struggling getting good lockdown on the Mont Blanc as well. Seem to get a little heal slippage, so I may have to try your lacing system. My other gripe so far with the Mont Blanc is that around the heel collar it doesn't snug up to my ankle so I get a little dirt and debris into my shoe. I've never experienced that before (probably because this is the first shoe with an ankle collar with basically zero cushioning I've used). Have you experienced that at all?
    I will say that I am really liking the shoe. The mesh is comfortable, the midsole does seem to have fantastic energy return, and the grip is pretty good. Doesn't do well with mud for me but otherwise seems to be alright. I am concerned about the durability, but knew that going in. This is made to be light, not durable.

    • @movemorenowjames
      @movemorenowjames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @movemorenowjames
      @movemorenowjames  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the old Olympus does clog up with mud!! Don’t go 1/2 a size up, if anything go the other way… 1/2 down … Depending on how much room you want up front. I would be intrigued to see what a 10 would feel like (mine are 10.5)…

  • @junglisttt
    @junglisttt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I first went EU 46 in mine because my paradigm 6 are that size and fit great, but i just got way to much heel slippage in them, so i went down to size 45 which i have in most of my Altras and still i got a bit of heel slipping, if i don't tie them down really hard, but then my feet hurt because of the hard laces and the thin tounge. I don't get why they did not take that padding all the way up on the tounge. It is just in the middle anyway so i don't Think it would increase weight to much. Also in the heel collar i think they should have as much padding on the achilles as on the sides. Loose the pull tab instead. This is why i, and several others are getting that heelslip. I might go down another size and try them out but im starting to think this shoe is not made for my foot. Which is sad because im fine in all the other Altra shoes. I was going to use this in a 50miler in the end of march but might just stick with the Olympus.

    • @movemorenowjames

      It’s a tricky one, i seem to have almost worked it out … no slipping and with extra padding I put on the tongue - helps stop any pressure from the laces … looking forward to the BOA version.

    I've been waiting for this comparison. I tried my wife's Olympus 4 (half size too small but locked down hard on the laces not too bad and no other issues); loved them and promptly put 100 miles on them; was thinking of buying my own. Couldn't bring myself to spend the dough though when I was getting away with the smaller size and wife not convinced she wanted them back after my stinky feet. Tried Inov-8 Terraultra G 270s in the meantime; definitely bouncier and more nimble than the Olympus; bit concerned they're cutting into the top of my forefoot because of poor finishing around the tongue and bunching. The Mont Blanc has been the wildcard option, new kid on the block. By the sounds of it there's not much in it. New MB doesn't make the Olympus a bad shoe. Have to consider the zen moments I've had in the Olympus vs. trying the new thing that's new. It is a toss up for me.
