      I know you're a fan of the Mont Blanc but by the looks of it there's not many that are 🤔
      It's a shame because I love the midsole, just the right balance of everything. Maybe version 2 well work out better for me. Thanks for watching and I hope you are fit and well 🙏😊

    Solid honest review! I'm a big fan of the superior as a racing shoe from altra, its light and nimble and still zero drop and footshaped. That beingh said i dont tend to run over 50k so wouldnt know how the less cushion would cope over longer distances. Looking forward to trying a Mont Blanc and Timp later in the year!

      Timp is great check it out. A bit wider than the MB

      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Andy, I'm glad you thought so. I've not run in the Superior before but that's great that it works well for you. It's a real shame about the Mont Blanc because some aspects of the shoe are very good. The new Timp looks like a really nice shoe so I'll hopefully get a chance to try it out. I bought my first pair of Altra Mont Blanc and I really like this shoe. I use this shoe for speed walking my dogs on all types of terrain and grades and so far it's stayed snug on my foot. The only heel slippage I noticed was climbing steep grades. Overall I really like this shoe for what I'm using it for.

    Great review ! And again, I just love your straight to the point conclusions: in this case I completely agree, the chances that this is the perfect shoe for this amount of money are slim, that's not even debatable...the heel is mentioned by lots of users, and there's no way all the positives outweighs this negative, in the end it's a trail shoe, who wants to handle this in unknown technical terrain ? And for sure not in UTMB Terrain !

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much, I'm glad you think so. I totally agree the positives don't out way the negatives. Fit and lock down are so important when running on technical trails, especially if it for 104 miles and 10,000 meters of elevation! It's a shame because I had high hopes for the Mont Blanc 😔

    Dedicated 65 technical rocky mountain miles here in Sedona to the MB’s before I retired them. Miserable experience. The downhill foot slip is aggravating. Even sized down a half size and replaced the laces to attempt to fix the well noted heel lockdown/lacing issues. Nothing worked. And all the stubbed toes on rocks… ugh. Brutal. It’s just a poorly designed shoe - unless perhaps you were born with Altra’s ideal foot shape. Haha. Replaced them with the Hoka Torrent 2 (my second pair) and had zero issues over the same terrain. Took a chance with my first pair of Altra rubber, hoping they would live up to the hype. Big fail. Spot on review mate - loving the content!

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a very disappointing shoe for me, especially after all the Hype! I also tried most things to try and improve the fit and lock down but it made very little difference 🤔
      There are some Altra fan boys defending the shoe but at the end of the day it just poor design! Hopefully they'll get things right in the Mont Blanc 2. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏😊

    Look at 55 lock laces on Amazon, it's like they're made for this shoe. Zero heel issues, and when warmed up it felt like they moulded to my feet.
    One thing I needed it more cushion, but that just means they're for more experienced runners.
    Funny enough my toes did really hurt, but given the distance I doubt it's any fit issues.
    I did however put a heel pad under the middle of the tongue, but that's down to me being bony in that region.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My personal opinion is when a running shoe costs £165 you shouldn't have to buy things or put things on it to make it run better!
      I think Altra have a few design issues to sort out in the next version. Hopefully they will because I like the way the midsole feels underfoot 😊

  • @raphaelmartins849
    @raphaelmartins849 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Mont Blanc size big, definitely would start by sizing down at least half size from usual Altra sizing (I was a US10 in the Torin 5, but had to 9.5 in the MB). The heel and mid foot suddenly felt more locked in… Do agree on the shallow heel cup, doesn’t have to be so low… But the light construction and breath ability for the very humid weather I’m running outweighed that. And the grip is surprisingly decent on wet rocks…

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The uk9.5 fitted me in lenght just fine Raphael. If I went down half a size it woukd be to small and I don't think that would work for me on my longer runs. Vibram megagrip is brilliant rubber on wet rock, I'm a big fan and I really enjoyed the midsole as well. Fit is so personal in a running shoe, especially if you are running a long way and the Mont Blanc doesn't really work for my footshape unfortunately 😔

    great video R4A!
    Even though i had the same experience as you, and sized down twice to try and dial in the fit with no luck, i raced a 75k in them and got a great result. heels where slipping all the way though, but i got used to ut. obviously that is not how it is meant to be, and if i was not an Altra fan i would never put up with all that. A very weird, fast feeling, grippy but very heel slippy shoe all in one.
    The midsole is called EGO though, you keep saying Ergo😉 just had to point that out.
    I wanna try the BOA version but that will be even more expensive.
    Vibram on Lone Peak and Timp PLEASE Altra🙏 Ditch the Maxtrac.

      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you've summed up the Mont Blanc perfectly! It does feel fast and the outsole is surprising grippy but that heel! 😔

    Great review as always was looking forward to the BOA version but the same problems you’d have to dial the BOA so tight you’d feel them biting in the heel seems to be the weakness from most reviews it’s difficult for a first version shoe to get it all right but it sounds like V1.5 or 2 s negatives could easily be resolved!

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think the BOA system will make much difference to heel lock Morgan unfortunately 😔
      It is really tricky for brands to get new models right first time but this does seem like a pretty obvious design issue? Surely when they were test running the shoes the guys running in them could feel heel slip? Anyway, fingers crossed for version 2 and thanks for watching the video 🙏😊

    My default daily trail for around 12 miles is the Lone Peak. I tried the Timp but was a hot-spot on top where the lowest inside lace eye sits.
    I found beyond about 15 miles the Lone Peak start to feel a bit too flat and achey, so I tried the Olympus which was like going from road shoes to trail shoes all over again. They feel very clompy and heavy my foot slips forwards on down hills and feels like weight training up hill... I just tried the Mont Blanc and it has similar issues to the Olympus.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear you had similar issues with your Mont Blancs 😕

    I have purchased Altra Olympus 4 and Altra Timp 4 over past year and a half and I can honestly say one if not the most comfortable shoes ever build for trail running with the lowest outsole durability on both models. Upper material on my Altra Olympus 4 broke up after around 400-500km so had to take them to my trusted local shoemaker for repairing. I would give them 4 points in scale 1-10. The outsole is a very poor quality.

I'm loving what altras have done for my running and the overall health of my body, I just see them (unsuccessfully) trying to go head on with Salomon and Hoka while discontinuing the king mt. While the Mont Blanc is not for me, I do like seeing companies "pushing" themselves. Maybe version 2 will be better received.

    Hiya mate, thanks for the vid. just wondering if you're able to give me some advice. so far I only have 1 pair road shoe which is Altra escalante racer, I got wide and flat foot. Escalante racer has been great and I like zero drop shoes as I have quite a few vivobarefoot as my daily shoes. As I live in the city, I generally only run on tarmac. however, a bit of a of wetness is enough to give a slippage feeling while running. I was advised to look for a trail shoes, hence why I'm here :). But since I don't really run thru forest and only do lots of running during summer months, in my mind trail shoes will be a bit of a waste. Would you be able to give me any recommendations on which road shoes have good grip on wet terrain? or should I start looking into the trail avenue? (I don't mind shoes with a bit of a drop if you highly recommend it). Cheers

  • @DartmoorPaul
    @DartmoorPaul 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting and disappointing to see those scores, but fairly given I think, Loyd. I’m not a fan of these super cushioned shoes and maybe just me but I’ll stick to the Lone Peak 5 midsole. Now I’m confused though how Altra differentiate the Olympus, Mont Blanc and Timp4 they all look the same to me 😂

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was pretty dissapointing Paul 😕
      I think the biggest difference between the Mont Blanc and the Olympus is the weight. The Mont Blanc is more stripped back when it comes to structure in the upper because its aimed at racing. The Timp kind of sits between your Lone Peaks and the Olympus when it comes to midsole cushioning 👍

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm really not a fan of a runners knot, it doesn't work for me Dave. I did try it in the Mont Blanc but the tounge is to short and the laces just dug into the top of my foot, it was pretty uncomfortable! Maybe with flatter laces it would work better? The fact that everyone is trying to come up with solutions to improve fit and lock down says a lot about the shoe! 🤔

    Ersten paar Kilometer, sicher.... es war schlammig und kein ziemlich geniales Laufwetter - aber eben doch die perfekten Testbedingungen für einen Trail-running-Schuh und, ich bin wegen der Blasen an den Fersen kaum noch nach Hause gekommen!!!! Also, AUFPASSEN MIT DEM SCHUH!!!!

      The Mont Blanc has quite a few design issues Hinrich. I found it impossible to lock the shoe down and had lots of slippage in the heel and movement in the upper! 😔
      There just wasn't enough structure in the heel, I'm not sure how the shoe made it to market and this wasn't picked up in testing? Sorry to hear the Mont Blanc caused you issues, thanks for watching 🙏

    Dis moi, connaît tu la différence entre un 42 homme et un 42 femme...?? Jusqu'à présent, je n'avais jamais eu d'Altra
    En effet, j'ai depuis quelques temps les Mt Blanc et j'ai comme l'impression d'avoir des palmes....😮
    J'ai sais, c'est des ultra...
    J'ai toujours été habitué au fit'...
    Comme Dyna.., Salo...Sense, Pulsar, Speedcross,....
    Autrement en comparaison moins radicale les North.. Flight Vectiv
    Merçi par avance si tu as une réponse je suis preneur
    Je suppose qu'elles doivent être comme routes marques plus ft'👌???
    Sportivement, Frank

      A womens 42 will be a bit narrower and a bit shorter in lenght compared to the mens 42 👍
      Altras have a very unique fit Frank especially when you compare them to a Salomon shoe. I think they definitely work best if you has a wider foot shape 😊
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏

    Give me the Speedgoat 5 over this any day. I know a lot of people love zero drop shoes, just not for me.

      I definitely prefer a bit of heel off set Stu, especially for distance 👍
      Thanks for watching mate 🙏

    I think altra should of used that outsole on the timp 4 the Mont Blanc is a overall horrible shoe

      The outsole was one of the good features Michael. The Vibram megagrip Litebase is brilliant 👍
      I've always found the Timp outsole a bit slippy. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏

    So, according to your review: pricey, heel slippage, not so stable midfoot lockdown and questionable durability.
    Why should someone buy this shoes, unless his/her feet are shaped as diving fins and are thick as a brick ?
    I agree with you that look and colourway are top notch, but with my "normal" feet (actually very slim), they would be a total waste of money for me.
    I bet Speedgoat 5 would be a much better choice; now I go straight to your review ...

      The Mont Blanc has been dissapointing when it comes to fit and lock down Massimo. I personally would recommend the SG5's over the Mont Blanc and its £30 cheaper! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it's appreciated 🙏😊

      @@Run4Adventure I'd never considered to get Altra shoes, and never will, because I probably could fit comfortably with both feet in one single shoe. Anyway, that's my problem and I'm interested to new shoes/technologies nonetheless.
      Thank you Loyd for the reply; your hard work is greatly appreciated. Very few reviewers are so exaustive and straight to the point !
