Just wait until you hear all 5 of them perform "Purple Line" live. Their vocals and harmonies are even better live. TVXQ are huge in Japan, so "Purple Line" was originally one of their Japanese singles that was so popular that SM decided to release a Korean version with its own MV a month or so later. There is also a Japanese MV. "Something" was released in January 2014, but it was recorded as part of TVXQ's 10th anniversary celebration, so to commemorate their 10th anniversary, if you notice, there is a Roman numeral X on the floor in the middle of the ballroom. Fun fact: as you may know, it wasn't real common to see females in Kpop boy group MVs until more recently, and that's one reason why Changmin used to say that filming for the "Something" MV was his favorite, because after 10 years, this was one of the first times that they had female characters/dancers that they interacted with in one of their MVs. Changmin was 25 years old at the time and U-Know was 27. And as you saw in the MV, you can see why he had such a good time. LOL ;) You should really see a live comeback stage for "Something." The choreo they perform live with this song has them using that double ended mic that is attached in the middle by a rope. They each hold an end of the rope, and they show off their impressive dance skills by dancing without getting tangled in the rope. It's one of those performances that shows exactly why they are considered one of the best performing duos in the industry. "The Chance of Love" in 2018 is a big deal because it was their first comeback after being discharged from the military, so the Kpop industry was ready and waiting for them to release a new album. OK, now you need to check out TVXQ's MVs for "Love Line," which is part of their Chapter No. 1: The Chance of Love album, and "Truth," which is part of their follow up/repackaged album Chapter No. 2: The Truth of Love. Not all of TVXQ's MVs will have them wearing suits, but TVXQ are SM's senior most group, and like the members of Super Junior -- who are known for their suits -- they are now all in their 30s, so suits are part of that more mature adult look that they are going for. Therefore, just like everything in life, TVXQ's look and style has grown and evolved as they have matured and aged. With a lot of their MVs they are supposed to be mature sexy men, so suits go with that theme. TRAX was a group created as a collaboration between SM ent and Jrock/visual kei legend Yoshiki from X Japan. Visual kei takes from hair metal and brought the styling to 1000 😅 it was a big thing in the 90s and 2000s in Japan but Korea has never been hugely into the rock/punk/metal genre. Btw a lot of TVXQ's Japanese songs have rock elements! Tri-angle is such a base SM song, all the elements of their production recipe are crammed into 4 minutes. It wasn't received very well at the time in Korea though. Purple Line is actually about being true to yourself and your beliefs and walking your own way which is a theme that comes back often in their songs (including in Rebel)! THE lyrics mean "to be in touch with myself" and Yoochun really protested against "really want to touch myself" but the songwriter insisted and the rest is history lol. The characters at the end of the MV are actually their official group name before rebranding for the international market. It's read as Dongbang Shinki in Korean and Toho Shinki in Japanese, TVXQ is the alphabet acronym of a Chinese pronunciation (that's why some people say they have multiple group names, in reality they have one group name pronounced multiple ways). The characters are still used regularly when they go on entertainment programs or in their MVs (I think the most recent was in Yunho's Thank U)
I always love telling people that Tri-Angle was the song that got me into kpop in the first place because they look at me like I'm insane. 😂 But I came from jpop/jrock fandoms, so I already knew BoA and The Trax and then suddenly I had TVXQ plopped down in front of me and it was all over for me lol. Even so, I only seriously tracked down more of their music later and got into the fandom just in time to be there for the Mirotic comeback. Wild times.
I'm honestly surprised I never came across TVXQ earlier, I was super into T-pistonz + KMC which isn't really rock but it is some flavour of wild Japanese music 😅 they were the ones making the opening songs for my first anime and gateway into Asian art in general Inazuma Eleven. It did take a while for me to get into kpop in 2015 but when I did I went straight to SM, found EXO and TVXQ and fell in love! It's crazy how real the j-pop/j-rock collaboration pipeline that got most of us into where we are now is 😂

About Trax, that was SM trying to get in on the very popular visual-kei genre from Japan. It didn't really take though, since rock music in general isn't as huge in Korea as it is in Japan. This is also why FT Island tends to only release harder rock songs in Japan, because they do way better there than in Korea.

The chance of love was my first proper introduction to the group [I knew about Mirotic and also the name DBSK but did not first make the connection to them]. The song has a special place in my heart lol. I remember hours spent watching their comeback show. It made me fall in love with both guys.

Tri-angle is called that cuz it's 3 sm artists together, & the looks were so exaggerated cuz the concept was Visual Kei since SM has always been trying to crossover into different markets... Traxx is a band, & I feel like no one knows/talks about them since they weren't made for the kpop market, they were a straight up rock band mostly made to get money from the Japanese market & were completely opposite to what sold/sells now in Korea, so yeah, their part is definitely in the song

I miss TRAX so much. I recommend you check out their song Scorpio it’s fantastic, in both Korean and Japanese versions. Also Paradox. The main singer sings heavenly, I miss him singing. I always love telling people that Tri-Angle was the song that got me into kpop in the first place because they look at me like I'm insane. 😂 But I came from jpop/jrock fandoms, so I already knew BoA and The Trax and then suddenly I had TVXQ plopped down in front of me and it was all over for me lol. Even so, I only seriously tracked down more of their music later and got into the fandom just in time to be there for the Mirotic comeback. Wild times.
I'm honestly surprised I never came across TVXQ earlier, I was super into T-pistonz + KMC which isn't really rock but it is some flavour of wild Japanese music 😅 they were the ones making the opening songs for my first anime and gateway into Asian art in general Inazuma Eleven. It did take a while for me to get into kpop in 2015 but when I did I went straight to SM, found EXO and TVXQ and fell in love!
It's crazy how real the j-pop/j-rock collaboration pipeline that got most of us into where we are now is 😂

Yes! Thank you for the comparison to SF9 I've been wondering how to explain why I fell so hard for SF9 when I did, turns out it was the TVXQ flavor all along! About Trax, that was SM trying to get in on the very popular visual-kei genre from Japan. It didn't really take though, since rock music in general isn't as huge in Korea as it is in Japan. This is also why FT Island tends to only release harder rock songs in Japan, because they do way better there than in Korea.

I was obsessed with Something when it first came out. I wasn't a cassie yet but i loved every stage of it. The song, the concept, the choreo, the mv. Everything was just my style. The live performances were so fun too. It was such a fan era.
Btw, the live version of Purple Line is 10x better. They're singing with their raw vocals without autotune and it sounds so much better for sure.

Traxx is a band, & I feel like no one knows/talks about them since they weren't made for the kpop market, they were a straight up rock band mostly made to get money from the Japanese market & were completely opposite to what sold/sells now in Korea, so yeah, their part is definitely in the song

I miss TRAX so much. I recommend you check out their song Scorpio it’s fantastic, in both Korean and Japanese versions. Also Paradox. The main singer sings heavenly, I miss him singing.
