Thanks for this video, Ryan! 😊 The reason you do the podcast is the same reason I agreed to admin the Hurdy Gurdy Community - as a way of giving back to the people who helped me so much when I got started, and to help promote and support the instrument. The podcast is great and I'm really looking forward to next season!

For an introductory affordable hg the Nerdy Gurdy rocks!! Had it been available in the early '80's it totally would've been my first! $500 is what I paid for my Camac kit way back when...
My intro to the hg (in the early '80's) came via Roger Nicholson's dulcimer albums and his collaboration with Jake Walton (Walton played a guitar shaped hg on the album but pictured on the back of the album was a sinfonye... but, what did I know?!)
This is a great series, Ryan! Thanks!! When will you feature R.T. Taylor on the podcast? I'd call him the godfather of the hg in the US, promoting it since before rocks and dirt were around!

@@googleuser3163 Sorry to say I don't, I sold it when I bought my Hubbert Volksgurdy in the mid '80's ... I later learned it was sold again to fellow who really liked it's lower volume, more of a "parlor" instrument ....

promised myself a hurdy gurdy as a present to myself after I graduate college. Fingers crossed next march.Split between a Nerdy Gurdy (for the real experience) and the Digi-gurdy (for causing less marital stress during the learning curve). I do find it kinda ironic that for a decent chunk of history the Hurdy Gurdies were associated with beggars and the extremely poor and now it's expensive enough for most people to count a vice.

There are certain historical explanations for that. the instruments they played were a lot more simple with 5 to 9 keys, especially before the baroque and when you're talking about blind musicians. Either that or they are hand-me downs or patched up/salvaged.
Our hurdy gurdy is based on the improvements made in France during the baroque period which is a more sensitive and complex instrument. And then when you look at 19th century French instruments like Pajot, those were large scale operations, basically factories and those factories made more than gurdies. Nowadays we don't have that anymore plus labor is more expensive. If there is one think that drives up the price it is labor.
So the reasoning leaves out a couple of steps.
Also, it isn't a good comparison to compare hurdy gurdy prices to simple, popular factory made starter instruments like guitars, violins or recorders. They should be compared to oboes, viola da gamba, nyckelharpor etc.

@@Folkskelet Thanks for the historical context. This is a fascinating instrument and I'm lucky to have been bitten by the bug when it's popularity is on the rise

The marital thing is a problem. But oddly, I've never gotten any complaints on that front, and my gurdy is LOUD. The Nerdy Gurdy is great though.
