Dear staffs, Thank you for your interest in Thai language. In 3:48 I found some mistakes in this VDO clip. 1. 'ไม' doesn't mean mile (which means the distance that is equal to 1.6 km.). To mean 'mile' in Thai written language, you have to write 'ไมล์'. The word 'ไมล์' comes from English language. 2. ไม้ means wood (material) or rod only. ไม้ isn't the question word when asking. ไม้ contains vowel 'ai' which is long vowel sound. I think the question word for asking that you want to mean is 'มั้ย' which used in informal way only. มั้ย contains 'a' vowel which is short sound. ไม้ and มั้ย are also high sound both but different in long and short vowel respectively. 3. ไหม has two meanings. First, if 'ไหม' is noun, it means silk. Second 'ไหม' can be the question word when asking too but more formal that 'มั้ย'. For example, 'คุณรักฉันไหม' means 'Do you love me?' 4. ไม่ and ไหม้ are in falling sounds. ไม่ means 'not'. It is used in negation form. ไหม้ means burning. I think that you out the meaning of words 'ไหม' and 'ไม่/ไหม้' in switching so it will make some people misunderstand. Thank you.
@@asiandramafan2669 S as T? I'm not sure what you're referring to. Could you please give an example? And as for 'r' and 'l', it's actually a 'bad habit' to do that but many Thais do it, me included. It takes effort to pronounce the rolled r every time it comes up so many of us simply use 'l' instead. We still understand the intended meaning from the context so it's alright. The other times where it will really matter is if you're a Thai language teacher, an announcer/MC, or a singer. Anyone who needs to be accurate, really. Those people are trained to get it right every time.

But the spelling is "mathuros loghan" , in u prince series a guy named "stethis" but they pronounce it "thesith " ..the Thai meaning of the word " special", is " fiseth" but the spelling is " fises". I know they can't pronounce joint letters.. that's ok I can understand but spelling and writing have huge difference Pi I am helpless. Pi ka, your dramas are excellent and that made me to learn Thai I am studying now .. but it's very hard 😭

That is not correct. Rising starts with low and ends with high, thus rising. i.e. ไหม silk or QW. Falling start with high and ends with low i.e. ไม่ no or ไหม้ burn. This is a good video so please make corrections.

I found that the context of a conversation would help me to be understood even when my tone was incorrect. While in Nakhon Ratchsima, I did not hear the R sounds in words as much as much as I heard an L sound. For example, the name Ratchasima sounds like it begins with an L rather then an R. I noticed the R sound more as I traveled South. Thanks- Jerry
Nakhon Ratchasima (นคร'ร'าชสีมา) For the word ราชสีมา, it is pronounced 'ราด-ชะ-สี-มา'. In the correct way to pronounce ราด which is the first syllable of this word. ร sounds most likely R in English but it's not 100% identical. To pronounce ร in Thai way, you have to put your tip of tongue on the ceiling of your mouth and pass the wind through the space between your tip of tongue and the palate so the tip of tongue will be oscillated. You can find the clip that taught you to pronounce this. But You said that it sounds like it begins with L, I think maybe sometimes people speak this word fast and in informal way so it's OK. There are some Thai people cannot pronounce ร. It's OK but it's not correct in our law of pronunciation.
Thanks very much for this excellent introduction to Thai pronunciation. I find it may be more useful if there could be an inset close-up of Jay at 1:18--1:29, so that we could better mimic how she pronounces those sounds.
Personally, I speak a tonal language (chinese/Cantonese) but the tones are still difficult for me (I can't tell the difference between the falling and the high tone yet).
