I live in Phuket and surf here, not a lot of waves this time of year generally, but around April/May-ish we should start getting some. We might even have some in a couple days, but it's hit and miss this time of year.

    Selfishly speaking, this is probably my favorite of your videos. I am a self taught Spanish speaker who gets mistaken for fluent by my amigos Mexicanos all the time. Thailand has been such a powerful vehicle towards restoring my mental health (I’m from USA) that I am highly motivated to learn the Thai language. The other day I started writing a note called: Getting by with my 11 word Thai vocabulary (sarcastic) and upon listing words and phrases, realized I know around 65-70 words at this point. I'd say the FSI estimate of how long it takes to to be functional in Thai is about right. I did US Peace Corps Thai language training 6 hours a day 6 days a week for nearly three months in Thailand prior to taking a volunteer job. By the end of that rigorous program I could have basic conversations in Thai and I could read very very slowly but my vocabulary was still so basic that reading comprehension was minimal.
    I continued studying on my own for 2 years and by end of that period I was a solid intermediate in speaking and reading but the writing was lagging behind. I mastered writing after another year of study and lots of practice.
    Thais will over-compliment your Thai from day one. This is both encouraging on the one hand, and debilitating on the other as it fosters complacency. I often wished Thais were more honest in their appraisal as I learned more Thai, to help me work on weaknesses in Thai acquisition. It's a trap I've seen many expats in Thailand fall into. Good enough for profuse compliments but unaware how terrible their proficiency really was, so they stop progressing.

    • @stevo988
      @stevo988 ปีที่แล้ว +5

If he studied almost 500 hours of Thai in 3 months, he should have at least been Intermediate.

    So funny because I'm also in the middle of a 30-day project to learn Thai. But I'm doing it strictly from TH-cam. I already speak 4 (western) languages so I thought it might not be that bad. Wrong. But it's like anything else: if you want to get good, you have to practice until your head hurts. I've found that it helps to review everything first thing in the morning when my brain is fresh. Also, at night when I'm completely burned out, it helps to go through everything even if I think I'm too tired to absorb anything. It's surprising what you can recall later. Anyway, great job Dai! @@revenuerecipes It's going too slowly. I started with standard TH-cam videos on common phrases, then moved on to vocabulary. My desk is covered with flash cards. But it's hard to memorize when everything is so different from anything I'm used to. At this point I definitely need to understand sentence structure better. Ultimately, I think I'll have to take more formal instruction, probably a zoom class, which seem to be how things are done nowadays. Your comment that one should go directly to the Thai alphabet was very insightful. Would definitely need a class for that. It was also very encouraging that you rated your ability to understand Thai so highly. If I can understand what people are saying, I would be so much closer to my goal of basic proficiency. Great video! You've definitely put some wind in my sails! My thanks to Paddy for this one.

    แบบนี้มั่นใจได้ว่า ถ้าอยู่เมืองไทย3เดือนน่าจะคล่องปร๋อ พออยู่ครบ1ปีก็สบายละ
    Pretty impressive for 30 days!
    Well, Dai kind of proved that 1) Speaking Thai is only difficult with the tones. There's no complex grammar to overthink about, but once you master the tones then it's easy peasy. That leads to the point 2) Dai also proves where there's a will, there's always a way. Learning in 30 days with such dedication and commitment would definitely get such an impressive result.
    I like his recommendation to drop the English transliteration crap. It is definitely true.

    Great video, and well done Dai. I'm learning as much as I can before my next visit in May, and agree that getting stuck into understanding the Thai script is key, perhaps alongside getting some common words and phrases under one's belt. I'm not sure I have the dedication to purely bang away at the script ... I was going OK with consonants but some of the vowel stuff has my head spinning 🙂
    Anyway, this video gives me a lift and helps me keep on track, so many thanks guys.
