    What an awesome opportunity and great experience!!!! I love that you love your Uma but are also not stuck in the monohull-only bubble mind set, and just love to experience multiple things. Also I must add: this might be the Best “review” I’ve see so far. you actually showed us what this boat is made for instead of just standing and talking about it. That is a propper endorsement for dazcat !

      It was really great to see Kika and Dan's first time 'fast sailing' on one of our cats. It took them awhile to get over the surprise of the difference of it all but totally got the cat thing in the end! We were lucky that we got the wind so they could really experience it...

      @@DazcatCatamarans sadly I have not been on a cat myself, however I have seen several videos from other channels, where their catamarans just break apart during long passages, no doubt they would break on a passage similar to this one. It would be interesting to see how a boat like this handles a longer passage such as the Atlantic crossing.

      @@noahbruket5906 as with everything there are different purposes and pluses or minuses for every boat in different situations... our boats have frequently crossed the Atlantic! Here are a couple of videos you might enjoy - the first is a gentle cruise across from the Canaries to Portugal and up the coast then across Biscay. The second is racing in the Caribbean with the oldest crew in the race (86, 70, 59, 52, 50!) with winds up to 40 knots and many boats in difficulties...we also had to retire but not because of the boat,,,but after the race the 86 year old owner sailed back to the UK with one of the crew and a couple of other friends! I think you might enjoy the story and drama in this video. I hope you get to sail and enjoy a catamaran soon. I'd only sailed monohulls, all my life, until I started working with Dazcat. I'm a full multihull convert now!

      Dazcat Catamarans would you know the hull and planing speeds?

    • @777rogerf
      @777rogerf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ek9772 I also was looking for the speeds. In my 20s I skippered a 23-foot Tempest (Olympic class) with.a planing hull. It is exhilarating to get up on a plane sailing down a big wave, but the little Tempest could take a knock-down and pop right back up , and it was self-bailing through the scuppers. It was not, of course, a cruiser, but safety would be a top consideration for Kika. Not sure about Dan!

    Sailboat design is evolving so fast right now, it is hard to keep up. This is the first close up view of a multi-hull I have come across, and I am impressed. The fast multi-hulls I have seen videos of had very little cabin area visible, whereas this one has a sizable cabin on top of the hulls, plus berths in the hulls. And very fast sailing. for sure.

    So you liked the sail on the CAT along the coast of England. You need to try a trimaran. I built my 41' Trimaran. up in Wisconsin, and sailed it down the Mississippi to the Gulf. Then across the Gulf to Florida. The best thing about the trimaran is that when you are on a broad reach, and you get hit by a gust, the boat didn't heel.....it just accelerated. I built my boat with a captains chair, and when we got that gust of wind, I was pushed back against the back of the seat. Just like punching a 600 HP supercar. That is a cool feeling in a sailboat.

    I just spent the past two weeks getting current with the last 4 ish years of your lives. It's been an amazing journey. I'm actually from about ten minutes away from where you picked Uma up. I love the mix of sailing and work you manage to get in your videos, the only thing I'm less fond of is that recently you've been putting more emphasis on eye candy shots at the cost of telling your story. The two of you and Uma are the story, the places you go are just the back drop. Keep following your dreams they will never steer you wrong.

    I read somewhere that some of Sir Francis Drake's ships anchored in the calm area behind where the tidal race at Portland kicks up. Some ships from the Spanish Armada, not realising it was a trap, thought they were sitting ducks and sailed toward them. As they approached the tidal race suddenly kicked up and swamped the Spanish ships. Local knowledge is a wonderful thing!!

    Draw a equilateral triangle and placing the words ‘Fast’, ‘Spacious’ and ‘Inexpensive’ at each apex of the triangle. If a marker is placed in the triangle you’ll soon see that as you move closer to any one apex you move further away from the other two. To get a fast catamaran, you sacrifice inexpensive and spacious. Dazcats are very fast, very expensive and not nearly as spacious as the other cats they mentioned.

    Hi, you two, I am new here. I had a big grin on my face as Dan described the new catamaran designs floating apartments. They are, in my eyes, an insult to catamarans. My wife and I lived and sailed on our catamaran for 11 years. (between 1990 and 2001) A fast 11 m catamaran. My design, I have designed them for 42 years. No, no, I do not design houseboats. I design real catamarans. A reason I did not get rich with my design work. Yes, you two, fast sailing can be safe and fun. And yes, Kika, you feel every change in the boat's behavior more direct than on a monohull. This is part of the fun and a safety point.
    Now? I have to watch the next of your videos. They are simple, the best here on TH-cam.

    The bows really seem to bury deep into those waves. I’m no expert but the Dazcats seem to have more weight forward then other performance catamarans.
    Gunboat, Outremer, HH, Marsaudon and Schionning all have their main salon/bridge deck and engines placed farther aft. They appear to have much longer bows and trampolines making them less likely to pitch pole in extreme conditions.

    • @angela1984a
      @angela1984a 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As I understand it, this Dazcat that they were on was 'only' 42.5 ft long. Most of the boats from Gunboat, Outremer, HH and Marsaudon are longer than that. Now some four years later HH has launched their new HH44. Yachting World has a sailing review of one of those in much nicer weather than this, but you can clearly see that it has a similar motion. And the O'Kelly's now have video of an Atlantic crossing with a new O55 that Nick didn't find particularly comfortable due to the sea state during large parts of that crossing... If you sail in certain conditions you are going to get motion similar to this even if you're on a 55 ft long new Outremer or some such...

Can be adjusted for optimum power forward and reverse, or best power generation, and when the batteries are full they automatically adjust to minimize drag. There was a lack of skill apparent too but that's what happens when you dont "know your boat" from having it for decades or refitting it yourself.

      I did a passage on a new Outremer 45 some 3 years ago, from south of France to Tunisia and back. Was kinda “visa run” for the boat, as well as showing the owner what she could do. Top speed was just over 25 knots. We sailed a full day almost never below 20 knots. Mostly one reef and full jib. We did push the boat, but anyway, it proves that the Outremer cats can go properly fast, if they’re not stuffed full of shit. I’ve never tested the Dazcats, but I’m pretty certain that this one could also push about the same speeds, perhaps even more. Looks light. Minimum weight is extremely important for speed, on any boat, but especially on a light cat.

      @@SailingUma The Outremer have the reputation of being good boats that can handle rough stuff.

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Never said they can’t do it... only said I would be nervous going that fast in that sea state. They’re definitely fast boats. We’ve just seen them not hold up well to the rigours of full time cruising. Most boats don’t. They’re not designed or built too. We’re not bashing Outremer, just new boats in general aren’t built to last more than a few years before needed serious maintenance.

    • @SteinVarjord
      @SteinVarjord 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Sailing Uma. I think most people are not aware of how hard it is on a boat to cruise full time. Also they’re not aware of how flimsy “normal” consumer products are. Like cars. They might be high quality, but drive a Mercedes nonstop for a month. How much of it would be operational? Not much! And then do it for two years nonstop... That’s just the start of a long distance boats life. As we customers keep asking for home comforts afloat, and steadily more bling, we’ll end up with vulnerable boats, no matter what the builder tries to do. Simple is always better...

    What a great video. Good to see the comparison of cat vs. monohull. Never sailed a cat (of any size) before. Can't imagine what it is like to NOT hear the Pearson creak! If you can find where she's rubbing, blow in some talcum powder. That will quiet her down.

  • @jamieweyndling1861
    @jamieweyndling1861 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Guys that was a great video but other cats can be almost as fun. In my Fountaine Pajot 44 I did many long passages and often encountered similar conditions to what you showed and the boat was amazingly fast, safe and comfortable. For sure cruising cats will not sail upwind well, but down wind they can really fly and actually feel safer and more stable when surfing. Reaching 20 knots was not unusual. Good luck with your travels.

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Down wind is great. Which is why many choose a cat for trade wind sailing. We like to go other places and with electric motors, good upwind sailing traits are a must, which is why we’ve never really considered a cat before. Also surfing speeds and sailing speeds are two very different things. We’ve surfed at 18kts on Uma before but rarely sail faster than about 6.5-7kt average. Most cats can’t sail at 20kts. Even the top performing cats tend to average closer to 15-20 even though they can certainly go faster in perfect conditions.

    It would be informative for most viewers if you were able to try catamarans under various conditions. This one was arguably necessary, but extreme, and the boat appeared to perform well. Skeptics say that, if the sheets jam and a multihull capsizes, it will not right itself like a keeled monohull will.
