    I finally got around to posting a new video! I've been in Toronto for almost two weeks and it has been a crazy whirlwind of work and getting adjusted. I'm up here, for what is, no doubt, the BIGGEST project of my life.
    But I still have to find time to create my own videos and take photos! It's what I live for.
    And I bought a boosted board. Cause, you know, TH-cam.

    I set my camera Aperture priority, auto iso. Set my minimum shutter speed at around 1/200th and let the iso do the rest. I use exposure compensation to adjust slightly if over or underexposed to my liking.

      since making this video, I too have played around with Aperture priority. It's pretty great! I'll likely do a video amending my settings. I've learned a lot from the comments on this video!

    Hey Stephan. Love your content. I’m gonna give you a quick-tip here, that was a huge gamechanger for my shooting. :)
    I, as you, have a custom button on my a7iii assigned to manual/auto-focus toggle mode. What I found out, and what I am using alot more than changing the focus mode, is that if you assign another(or the same) custom button to the manual focus mode( Can’t remember the exact name of the path, but it should be on the same page as the autofocus/manual toggle-page), and this do result in a custom button that you can click and hold while in auto-focus mode, to be able to focus manually. ALSO, the exact same button works the other way around, so you get auto-focusing IN manual mode when you click the button. Don’t know how important it is for you, but it was huge for me! So wonderful when I have to make minor adjustments in short time. Click, hold, manual focus, take picture. Let go of the button, and the camera autofocuses again.
    Keep up your cool videos sir! Much love from Norway :)

    Great tip on the apsc toggle! Never thought about it. One question, I imagine the resolution of the photos drops to 10mp ,is that right? Does it affect much the quality?

    • @StephanFleet
      @StephanFleet  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Melissa. All I did was add an edit and chunk off that small piece, copy and paste it a few times, then time reverse every other clip. You need to drop the music down first and edit to the audio, make your wave forms big so you can see where the DJ spin is and cut the piece to match that length. I can do a video about it one day.

  • @g3z
    @g3z 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Maybe i'm wrong but when you use aps-c mode the image size is smaller so you could just crop it in post.

    • @StephanFleet
      @StephanFleet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you are correct! Good catch! it's never much mattered to me because I always shrink stuff down for web anyway. It's more of a composition tool for me. I mainly use the mapped button for video, in which case everything is 4K or 1080p, and the APS-C stuff seems to record slightly sharper.

    • @weedylock
      @weedylock 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      10 mpx on apcs mode with sony A7mk3 so only usefull for video.

    • @StephanFleet
      @StephanFleet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still argue that it is useful if you know you are going smaller rez and want certain compositions. That being said, yes, not necessary for stills at all!

    • @GioFar
      @GioFar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      UlTrApLeX depends on what you mean by useful, it's true that using that mode is exactly the same like cropping in post-processing but 10MP still allow you to print decent size and for web is more than enough.

    • @MrRexxyboy
      @MrRexxyboy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a great tool! You have to nail the composition so you don't have to crop in post as APS-C mode also reduces megapixels by x1.5, so 24mpx becomes 16 megapixels

  • @JPS4inLA
    @JPS4inLA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think the GH5 or A73 is a better cam for video? Thnx ✌ Down Torontans refer to their city as Ronno or The North

    • @StephanFleet
      @StephanFleet  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cars and Cameras really depends. I think technically the format the GH5 captures is better. Also it’s stabilization is much better. But the full frame of the Sony and low light are better.
      Sony’s color just slightly beats out the gh5 to me. But with color grading I can get great results with both.
      GH5 interface is much better.
      If you are vlogging then it’s a no brained. The GH5 has a front facing screen. The Sony does not. The new GH5 firmware made face tracking usable. I actually have a video coming out about all of this soon!

    Hi, Stephan! Thanks for the great A7iii Street Photo tips! I've been doing a lot of street here in Los Angeles and having a good experience with it. I'm shooting a Nikon D750 w 35mm f1.8. Great camera, great lens, very happy. Still, I could hit focus a bit more often than I currently do. So I'm thinking about the already legendary A7iii. I'd love a 35mm f2 or f1.8, but sadly, there's no such lens. It's either the slow Sony 35mm f2.8 or the heavy Sony 35mm f1.4. I was surprised to hear that you're using the 1.4 for street! I tend to shoot around f2. I probably don't need 1.4. But 2.8 is a bit deeper DoF than I'd prefer. The a7iii is a light camera and the 35 2.8 is a crazy light lens, much lighter than my Nikon setup. But if you put the 1.4 on the Sony, then it's a heaver camera+lens than my Nikon DSLR!? I presume you're pretty happy with the 1.4, but I was just wondering if you had more thoughts on the topic. Thanks again for the helpful video!

    • @StephanFleet
      @StephanFleet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Glenn Zucman check out the Sony F2 28mm. It’s a bit wider than the 35, but it’s half the size and a super good price. Very sharp. I film most of my vlogs on it. It may be the street lens your looking for!
      Also for street I’ve switched to using aperture priority and auto iso, capped at going no higher than 6400. I keep an circ ND filter on there and it’s the only thing I have to dial in.
      AF is great on the A7iii though I do find their wide area AF doesn’t always get me what I want. Sometimes I use center area or spot focus.

    • @GlennZucman
      @GlennZucman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Stephan! haha, yes, they've got all kinds of lenses: 35 1.4... 35 2.8... 28 f2... they just don't quite have the one I want: 35 f2! :P I know 28mm isn't that much wider, and that at f2's a good deal, but I'm really hooked on 35mm for street work. I have a 24mm f1.8 that I take out sometimes. It's a fun lens, especially shooting on trains where you can cover things even if someone's sitting really close to you or doing the occasional "pole dance" (dancing with the train's hand hold railing) right in front of you. Even though I do love the 24mm, I shoot the 35mm probably 90% of the time. It just feels best. So even though Sony has a bunch of "close" lenses, they just don't have the one I want. Of the available choices, I'd probably go 35mm f2.8 and just take the loss of a stop. I'm not worried about the stop for speed, but just for background blur. I realize many street photographers prefer greater DoF to see the city and so on, but for me, cutting down on some of the visual distraction feels important. As for the 35mm f1.4 - you walk around with the weight and don't mind it?
      And, yes, on my D750 I shoot aperture priority. I usually keep the shutter speed at 1/125 or higher, but I will let the ISO go all the way up to 12,800, which feels acceptable on the D750 for me. I've been shooting a lot in Hollywood lately, and fortunately, there's a lot of light on the street at night, so you can get some nice images at modest ISOs.
      You're mostly not using the a7iii eye focus? I was hopeful about that. I do spot on the D750 which is pretty good, but I'd like to do a bit better. Often I'm catching brief moments, so "focus & recompose" can become "focus & shoot" and the composition/cropping isn't perfect.

      Thanks, Stephen! US$1200 for a manual focus lens? haha, the 35mm f2.8 is sounding better and better. At least the Loxia is only 3x the weight of the 2.8 instead of 10x the weight like the f1.4! :P

      Glenn Zucman Yes, pricey. But they check certain boxes cheaper ones don’t. 5 years ago I woudn’t have considered it. But my shooting has changed and now I would. You know, we just date our cameras, but marry our lenses.

    I own the A7III and it is an awsome all rounder but if you're looking something strictly for street photography then you need to know that the readout from the electronic shutter is still relatively slow, so moving around and shooting in silent mode will result in rolling shutter. Is this a show stopper or something worth paying extra 2k for A9? No, no it isn't.

      For stills just RAW uncompressed. For video, I bounce back and forth between Slog-2 and Cinelike-D. I also have a cool lut package for the newer HLG profiles. On the GH5 I often use V-Log, not a huge fan of it though, takes a lot of work... Sometimes I just shoot natural. I guess it depends on how much post color work I wanna set up for myself.

    • @StephanFleet
      @StephanFleet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People say a lot of things ;) Here's the thing, on a DSLR its' easy to rotate the filter to a bad spot and get some weird vignetting. On a Mirrorless, you can see what you are getting on the screen, so it makes it easier to adjust. I dunno, on paper I am probably doing something "wrong," but I do what looks good to me.
