- Donnie, Stevie, and I take out first trip to the Trapper Cabin to drop off a load of boards for sheathing that we milled from some White Pine that we dropped earlier in the year. We take a little tour of the area and see Ruffed Grouse, Fox, Redtail Hawks, Pine Marten, Whitetail Deer, and Moose. The first trip up was a success, heavy load and a 7.5 hour drive. Stay tuned for the entire series.

Joe, this brings back many memories. I grew up in northern Maine. My Dad was a professional guide. He had several old logger cabins that he would use for his clients, and we would upkeep and get to stay in them. It was worth it to maintain the old. He would share memories of logging, fishing, hunting and trapping. Donnie, another old relic, is a great asset to your channel and reminds me of my late father. Unfortunately, Maine cabins often use shingles, and even tarred paper, for the roof, which must be upkept, or it succumbs to leaking, and heavy snows.
Here in the South, where I now live, cabins have metal roofs, which can last over 100 years. If you are going to build a cabin, it doesn't cost that much more to have a plastic covered, galvanized metal roof. It will last at least 50 years, and great sleeping during the rain. Your channel has a historic quality. I am praying that you are able to get your weight down, so that you live long like Donnie (and even myself).
Hey Joe and Donnie! I grew up in this camp. We sure did create a ton of memories up there! 35 years worth of birds, deer, moose, bear, and snowmobile seasons! I’m truly elated to watch you gentlemen start this adventure and create you own! Before I was even born, my father was introduced to the NMW by his father in law, my grandpa. They started coming up in the late 60’s-early 70’s in a school bus camper, and deer hunt for weeks on end parked at the top of witch hill. We’ve been coming up ever since.
That’s awesome we are excited to hear more about the history of the area and the camp! Thanks for sharing
Hey Craig! This comment hits home. I'm tearing up as ya'll walk through the ol'camp. I had been going to this cabin since before I could walk. A lifetime of memories with wonderful people were made here. Congratulations, Joe. I'm glad the land's in good hands now.
Cheers and best of luck friends.
Hi Craig! My dad was AL and I also grew up going to this cabin with my siblings. Watching this video definitely brings up a lot of memories. I’m glad this cabin is in good hands. One day I hope to keep the tradition going with my own cabin. ❤️ the north Maine woods are a beautiful place.
Not sure if the “little witch sleeps here” is still written but that’s about me 😂
The bug at Dysarts is a dobson fly. It's the adult stage of a hellgrammite.
So cool thank you
Youre lucky to have Donnie as a friend and mentor. The knowledge these old fellas have is totally invalueable.
Oh my word, beyond Lucky! He's an absolute treasure I am incredibly and eternally grateful for!
Looking forward to seeing the build Joe
Thank you we are excited
Donnie has great taste!! Miller high life!! The greatest beer god ever made!! My favorite 😊
He doesn't drink much but he does live the high life when he does.
Gonna be a great adventure to follow along with Joe. Looking forward to it.
Thank you so much
It’s very nice to see the beginning of the camp build😊
Thank you, always a beginning and end
Can't wait to see this thing come together
Us too thank you
What a beautiful place main is if i could only convince my girls to move north absolutely love watching these videos thank you for sharing joe and donnie
Thank you, Sure is.
Wow! I'm as excited as you all are. It's not wet where I sit in my glider rocker with a glass of my home made wine. Love this journey I will say we are on as I plan to watch every episode. I don't miss many of your winter videos and have even made Donnie's Doughnuts. Enjoy you journey as I know l will. Thank you.
Awesome thank you
Been through that Northwoods gate a few times on my way to my favorite preserve land. When you get more time to explore take some time to fish in the Debouille area.
Awesome will do thank you. I know Brandon and the boys did a big snowmobile trip through a few years ago.
@@JoeHollandFishing I have only fished it during spring and summer. Most of the ponds and lakes have the elusive bluebacks in them.
Interesting thank you. @@williamemmons8816
Super excited to follow the build. If the walls could talk in that old cabin the stories they would tell.
So true thank you
Hello Joe! Looks like a great adventure.

Love the video Joe. The fly on the light pole at the beginning is a Dobsonfly, I think. Crazy looking bugs I tell yah.

Yeah we were a little surprised to see the turkeys . Also excited to fish Carr pond and have a warm camp to go to at night
Exciting stuff! Can’t wait to see what you boys do. I’ve got a similar series coming up in a few months!
That’s funny I think most of the Maine channels are doing a camp build or something like it this year
@joehollandfishing the large bug is a eastern dobsonflies, the one you saw is a female the males have longer pinchers by about 1 inch. they a pretty much harmless.
Awesome! Thank you. Really cool to learn that. Thanks again.
How exciting this is! Even makes me excited! Looks like a great area for bird hunting too! Can’t wait for the next video! As I’ve said before I would love to come up and give you guys some help on this project and spend some time in the North Maine woods
For sure thank you, Gonna be an epic season.
This is fun to watch can't wait to see more
Thank you !
Looks like a nice spot guys!! Excited to see the build
For sure thank you
If you're talking about the mill abouts 6 miles off rt 11 in Portage, I used to pull hardwood out of there for flooring about 10 years ago before I moved to Wisconsin. No idea if that's what they still do though
Very cool I think it’s the same one
You'll really love that zone I remember the bird population being pretty healthy between Fish River Lake and Big Machias, that's some amazing beautiful country. Can't wait to see the camp come together!
JOOOOEEEEEE!!!!!!!! I fu@*^•# missed you man!!!!!! Pardon my French!!!!!
For sure, I completely understand!
You are only inspiring me more to do exactly the same thing where i have 20 or so acres off grid just south of the County. Cant wait to follow you guys right into snow season!
Awesome we are super pumped
The horseflies are absolutely insane in that area. Just tear you apart in summer.
We never hit them too badly yet.
Awesome Joe, been following all along. I'm amazed of all you and Donnie have gotten done with all this rain.
Thanks buddy it’s been a wicked challenge
@@JoeHollandFishing I can see that, but then again I think you love a good hard Maine challenge!
Yes, Dobson fly. One bit me on my big toe drew blood.
They look fierce
@@JoeHollandFishinghellgramites will bite also
i'll be looking .
Thank you!
Excited for you boys, let me know how I can help
Really looking forward to getting you there!
Joe I didn’t think we were able to do land lease anymore! How awesome!
It’s a super old lease
Portage gate? i have camped at car pond and fish river falls many many times. awesome country
It sure is
Hey Guys, great to see you are gonna build a cabin. I will follow along fully. Looks like a great location. What do you have for a water source? I am gonna also follow your JH rough cut channel.
Thank you really appreciate it
Donnies a madman!!
He’s an animal
awesome!!!!!
Thanks!!
The one positive thing about all the rain is if your build site isn't under water now it never will be.
So true it’s been a crazy wet year
Great to see more from you guys
Thank you! More to come
cool.
Thanks
Dobson Fly is the bug! My grandfather calls them moose flys not sure why maybe cause it’s big. Not sure if anyone calls them that but I just learned about Dobson flys this year.
For sure on the Dobson. There is another fly that hang out on and around Moose that's about four times the size of a deer fly we call moose flies.
2 thumbs up from Alaska!!!! Good old boy's wish i was there i would grab a framing hammer.
Awesome thank you so much
Where are you guys getting those plaid state of maine shirts?
I actually designed them a few years back. Gonna put in an order again soon with my shirt guy I should maybe get some extras for the channel.
@@JoeHollandFishing - Meredith mentioned the same thing when she saw you and Donnie. (We'll take four she said - for the Christmas card - you'll have to photobomb it)
Another great adventure. I thought long term leases were a thing of the past. I’m guessing the project you’re taking on, you have a long time plan.
I but an off grid 16 x 20 camp in Lovell Me.6 years ago. Not being a professional carpenter it was a challenge and one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Good luck to the 3 of you.
I have 6x10 10 k dump trailer if you need some help.
I’m in southern Maine but I am familiar with where you’re at.
Thank you!!! We are super excited for the project
What is your chanel for your milling and wood cutting
J H Roughcut
Yes Joe, the further north you go.....the people are much nicer! Especially up here in Canada! Haha
So true as long as a hockey game doesn’t break out then it’s no holds barred
30:08 truer words never been spoken friends
Thanks
That was a Dobson fly.
Thank you
I have a question on how you find a lease like this? Is it a waiting list you get on ? Or someone you know sells lease to you, Thanks
I'm not sure if you can get on a list or not. I wouldn't hold my breath while waiting. We got this one through a sale. It was posted on the North Maine Woods website is how we first heard about it. I think there are a few more out there. One or two in the same area we are in but not posted.
@@JoeHollandFishing thanks for getting back. I’ve been looking Pattern area for Hunting and Snowmobiling. Got drawn this year for Moose Pattern area
Hello Joe, I hope you are well. Can you please put all your channels in the video description in the future? As far as I understood correctly, there are 3 channels from you. I have saved two of them and are familiar with them. I don't get a notification when a new video goes online. Please let me know the name of the third channel so I can subscribe to it. Many thanks and greetings from Germany.
Good idea thank you very much.
I've subscribed to your other channel, but I don't get a notification when a new video goes online! I've tried everything! How can I fix the problem? Should I message TH-cam?
That is weird. I will help and look into it a little too.
♥️New Subscriber!♥️
Thanks for subbing!
Was the food at the gate? He’s always hanging out there
The fox was back towards the mill
Nice I can’t wait to see what you to do we all love Donnie and you keep up the hard work much love
Thank you will do
what trapper cabin is this
It was originally a trappers cabin and has been used for several decades as a camp
Does the camp lot have a spring for water or close by?
Yes a spring that never freezes
@@JoeHollandFishing that’s awesome!
That is a dobson fly adult form of Hellgrammit The small Pinchers are the female, the males have even larger pinchers Whatever body of water They're hatching from there's gonna be some good fishing. The big ones love to eat them.
Awesome info thanks
that's a dobson fly, an adult helgrammite
Awesome thanks
Tell Donnie to eat as much ginger root as he can fit in to meals , couple times a week at least. Only pee a couple times, instead of a dozen. Really. Also enjoyed this video.
Thanks! I'll pass that along.
I’ve been on those roads we use to bird hunt from millinocket to Ashland lots of birds now closer to Canada less hunters . What a beautiful spot for you guys. Can’t wait for all the videos
Awesome. Those areas are incredible and we are pumped to eat some of those road chickens
kill that chinese bug! i hope you did!
It's native from what I am hearing and not a problem.
This is awesome guys Awesome! 🐻🦌🎏 good for you 👍 🇺🇸🗽🇺🇸
