- Donnie and I head up to Chesuncook Lake and get a snowmobile tour of the Village from John on day 1.
Chesuncook Village is a small unincorporated settlement on the northwestern shore of Chesuncook Lake in the North maine Woods Piscataquis County. A small village, originally supporting logging operations in the area, has existed there since at least the time of Henry David Thoreau, who wrote about it in The Maine Woods. The village is now a primarily seasonal settlement that caters principally to outdoors enthusiasts. Seven historic properties on or near the "Main Street" fronting the lake were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

We stayed at the Lake House in 1977. We flew into Lobster lake and canoed down the west branch of the Penobscot river to lake Chesuncook. We met Bert McBurnie and his wife. They were running the Lake House when we stayed there. I was 17. I am now 64 and it is one of my best memories.
Love the video and history lesson Joe. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
So great thanks for sharing

Thank you!
Maine had the Country's last log drive in '76. My father was part of many a log drive on the Machias River. My mother used one of those clothes wringers. I was always amazed how our school clothes could dry below zero. The biggest ones always get away. Good one, Joe!
Great stuff thanks for sharing
As you well know, Joe, you've only scratched the surface. Keep this theme rolling. Maines history is epic and a story worth telling. The most ancient form of education was passing down the stories of our ancestors. Keep up the good work! 👊🏼👍🏼🤙🏼
Glad you enjoyed it you are right !
Incredible history, especially the POW camps of WW2
Wicked
wow Joe i love this video. I like history and stories. its important to get history down on tape. I used to listen to my dad and his buddies tell stories up to camp about hunting and wild stories about how things were back in those days. I wish i had them on film to remember them. Thanks
So cool thanks for sharing

Super cool there
We used to hunt up in Northern Maine back in the 80's. Up around Northern Lumber/Paper land. Been trying to figure where we were back then but I was younger and we got access through some acquaintances of ours. Pretty sure it was on East Branch of Penobscot north of Millinocket. What I remember is there was nothing there except for some company shacks and a bunch of clear cuts and you made sure you had what you needed as we were 'Glamping' For the unknowing glamping is camping but in a fancy motor home. One of my sisters had a cottage on Moosehead. We used to go ride our sleds into Canada. i love Maine and the sign entering it on Rt1 Maine, The Way Life Should Be
Awesome , great country
I love history! Thanks for sharing joe.
Glad you enjoyed thanks
Cool little history tour. Thanks for sharing it

Hi Joe. Lawrence from Dowling Ontario Canada. Love your videos especially with Don. Just finished watching this one at 5:00 am. The only thing I would like would be better audio especially when doing an historical video such as this. Keep up the great work. It takes me back to many great times with my family in the Great Outdoors. Thanks again.
For sure thanks
Hey Joe been waiting with anticipation on this video once I saw the notice. Good to see you and Donnie going back in time and learning the past history. One of you’re best Joe!
Thanks bro
I’ve run sleds up from Moosehead and had lunch at the Lake House many times…was there right before she burned in 2018.
for sure great times.
Great show guys
thank you
Another update: The Simmons family started coming in the 30's. Camp was built later then that. No cars when the bridge was over the river. Horse and wagon used it.
Charlie Smith lived in the village and then went in the bush to trap.
Awesome thanks for the updates
Great history lecture!
Many thanks!
Can’t wait been missing them
For sure bud
@@JoeHollandFishing hey Joe, I know you always mention in your videos about books you are reading. Can you recommend any good books on this town or books similars in the north woods? Love your content please keep it coming. P.S. love to see some summer content as well! North woods canoe trips.
Great video Joe, love the stories and history about north Main I was born in Quebec little north of Montreal... this is the stuff that to this day makes us great neighbors... I am believe it or not reading Helene Hamlin's 9 mile bridge book I think you're in the same region... anyways keep up the good work
Great book
Same region
Finally
Yessah
Looking forward . 👌
Coming soon
Update: we only toured about 2/3 of the camps. There are more back in the woods. It was all happening so quick!
Haha so true
We could do a whole episode on Al Smarts river driver bean hole beans complete with hot boom chains!!
Really enjoyed this video I’ve spent a lot of time up there fishin my grandfather used to ice fish up there every weekend back when the salmon where bigger and Bert run things Bert was a gentleman
There coming back...stay tuned!!!
Awesome I heard the fishing was great
One more ??? Can u get this gentleman info for a back woods trip 🤔 love to do this with him .
For sure I’ll get you his email
Couple guys pulled into the door yard today. "Wait, didnt we see you on a video!! they asked.
For sure ! Definitely got star power !!!!
Love the video. It’s for sure a historical plc. Now I personally rode in that old army ambulance on my fathers 1999 zone 4 moose hunt. we stayed at reds and explored the village we had been up there ice fishing a few times we always stayed at Kelly camp that red had when we were ice fishing. But the archeologists were staying at that camp the week of our moose hunt. They had arrow heads like the man in your video explained pre dated the Penobscots now they personally showed us them. Now it’s a shame old red is gone. The supernaut family that was mentioned in the video is a dishonest bunch. The constant harassment of old red was disgusting. They showed up and arrested red with a helicopter that landed out front of his camp. He told my father the story as I sat there in his camp. My father testified in court on red’s behalf of the lies and harassment that we experienced from the family during our stay at reds on an ice fishing trip. # Outlaw # Outlaws chop shop palmyra Maine
Awesome thanks for the info and the history .
We been wondering where ole joe has been?
For sure been at it hard
I missed you by about a half hour this morning at Indian hill.
Ran into Earl Mann though😂
Bummer
As beautiful as Maine is one needs to be careful up north as one wrong turn can put one in great danger. It happened to Geraldine Largay back in 2013 around Katahdin. She made it nearly a month alone waiting for help that never came. Help was near but unfortunately not close enough
Bummer
Joe what an awesome video the history is very interesting just not really something you would think about that deep in the woods. How many buildings are there in the village? So interesting to learn about it looking forward to hearing more about the village. Can’t wait to see the next episode !
Not sure of an exact # of buildings. Theres maybe 30 property's. I mow 17 lawns in the summer.
Glad you enjoyed it thanks stay tuned for more updates
@@JoeHollandFishing I will for sure.
@@johnmooreii2381 are you the guy in the video giving Joe and Donnie the grand tour of the village?
Yes
Hi, did the "World Famous Donnie" get a new sled? Keep the video's coming. Thx.
This one was new to him this season. Used I think 2011
OMG is right. Man you could do a whole video in that one building/The Lodge. Please don't make me drive up there as it's much further than it used to be. Even back when it took like 6 hours, maybe more
For sure
If any of my tour info is off please share your knowledge. Tales can miss details through the tellings.
I've been informed the red brook camp came up by raft. Trying to locate an 8mm video....
Awesome job buddy a bunch of people need a contact info for you and the church can you provide an email ?

Where have you been ducking all this time? I've been worried! I hope you are well bud 👍
All good been working really hard gathering content for more videos to come
Joey going to have a east grand slam video ?
Very possible this season
How far is this village from the burnt lake house
The newly rebuilt lake house is 2 camps over from me. It's the center of town.
It’s in the same place
@@JoeHollandFishing i thought so but we used to ride up part of the lake to the old lake house, get gas ride to the trains an tour around up by them then ride back an eat. Then ride back Jackman
Was that golosh for dinner???
Yessah! Slop chewy
American chop suey with deer meat
Forgot to take the gas out of the deer meat
Do any of these camps come up for sale?
Yes they do. There might be some currently for sale.
Thanks,
@@JoeHollandFishing do you park off the golden road in winter to access camps ?
@@recentlyretired you can snowmobile in from the golden road yes.
