I didn't realize how much earlier Charizard gets access to Flamethrower than Typhlosion, though it may not be as crucial since both get access to Fire Punch early on. Typhlosion has an additional advantage of having access to Thunderpunch, and Charizard's flying type could prove to be a liability. I predict another Hidden Power Rock for both in the second playthrough (which is becoming my favorite hidden power, it's use case is so niche and unique!). Oh, and Gligar might be quietly crying in the corner again..
Your channel really sets itself apart from other Pokemon challenges by digging into every single detail of the run, the quirks of the region and your route. Always keeps me engaged, great work as always!
Absolutely. Scott’s attention to detail really shows. It’s very clear to me that he doesn’t just explore every possibility because he wants to do it, but because he HAS to do it.
This brings back memories. When Gen2 first came out, a friend of mine got his copy of silver before i ever got a gen2 game. He didnt bother reading any of the text, didnt know what to do or where to go and got stuck right at the beginning before even the first rival fight. He thought "maybe i need to train more to continue". Blasting through the first few trainers and gyms with a lvl 37 Typhlosion certainly was an experience.
It was a pretty close match, but I honestly can’t wait for Feraligatr vs Blastoise! I can’t wait to see you show the full power of them at least better than how the rivals used them.
The lack of physical/special split is a big advantage for Typhlosion in generation 2 since the elemental punches are still special-based. I think the same contest in generation 4 might turn out in favor of Charizard, albeit still being pretty close.
I know it’s probably at least a year or two away, but I’m excited for when we start getting Gen 4 runs, seeing how the split affects strategies, move pools, and overall rankings of different Pokémon
As I said in the Meganum/Venusaur video, Charizard does get Flamethrower much earlier than Typhlosion, but doesn't get ThunderPunch, so the drake will melt through a lot of the game but will likely struggle with Water-types more. As for base stats being identical...y'know, if I could, I'd alter Charizard's stats to make him more physically-oriented - switch his Atk and Sp. Atk, at least in Gen 4 onwards. The Kanto starters are all primarily special attackers as it is, and Charizard's physical movepool in Gen 4+ is so much wider than his special movepool (not to mention Swords Dance, Dragon Dance, and Belly Drum), so I think turning Charizard into a physical beast is justified. Just like how I'd turn Sceptile into a physical attacker, too - the physical Leaf Blade being his signature move, along with most of his moves being physical as well, and his design, all scream for his Atk and Sp. Atk to be switched.
I think it’s awesome seeing just how much better you’ve gotten at Crystal, especially how much of an impact it makes cutting out Sprout Tower and memorizing the dark areas without Flash. It’s very cool seeing you improve so much at routing. I will say though, while I don’t know if this would’ve been better, I’m surprised you didn’t make use of the Defense Curl + Rollout strategy with Typhlosion to beat Lance in the first solo. Obviously HP Ice is way better for the Dragonite in the second solo, but that caught me by surprise. (Also I think it’s really funny that Charizard learns Defense Curl, but not Rollout)
Aw, I like Flame Wheel. As someone who generally picks Cyndaquil, Flame Wheel is a really cool and fun move. Shame the elemental punch-out circuit is just better.
Glad that Typhlosion won. Typhlosion was my first pokemon ever so I have a special place in my heart for the Cyndaquil line in general. Glad that my all time favorite starter did such a good job in my first ever pokemon game. Access to Thunder Punch makes a big difference since that coverage for water types is so useful. This was a great watch and please keep up the great work. Can't wait to see Feraligatr and Blastoise having their showdown against each other.
3:47 In the game's canon (he says it at least once, maybe two or three times), Falkner got his Pidgey and Pidgeotto from his dad. However he got the lvl9 Pidgeotto, it was probably his dad that caught it. He even says after you defeat him "Darn, my dad's cherished bird pokemon"
I'm rooting for Typhlosion! despite it not really being super great, it's my favorite starter line. Silver was my fav game growing up and out of the many times I played most were starting with Cyndaquil.
I waited so long for this video and I was not disappointed. You played both so well and it was incredibly neck and neck. I am beyond ecstatic that my boy Typhlosion won and made it into S tier. Thanks for all your hard work and can't wait for the next one. P.s. Would love to see all three Johto starters do a back port playthrough of yellow version to see how they do in Kanto.
I bred a rattata with flame wheel because I thought that was awesome. Thank you gold/silver game guide. The only one I’ve ever had and I used the heck out of that thing! I bred everything!! And reread everything over and over and over again. Probably the reason why i have the type chart memorized even now
Another incredible set of runs. I had a feeling Charizard would run into more problems due to it's typing and not having quite the moveset diversity Typhlosion has. Once again, though, excellent job!
I thought Typhlosion would win, but didn't think it would be just this close. Really great runs by both! I am extra excited for the next video, though, as I'm partial to the water starters.
The only possible other thing I could’ve thought for Blastoise and Charizard would have been to get the solar beam TM from route 27 and use it in combination with sunny day and see if that would want her Theo Blastoise but really good video and I am happy that typholysion won!
Impressive performance by my boy Typhlosion! The Cyndaquil line has always been my favourite fire starter, my only negative against it is that I've always liked Quilava's design more than Typhlosion, but it is what it is. Looking forward to a Cyndaquil run some day! As I got older and learned about the various mechanics of the Pokémon games, I was always surprised that fire was a special type and not a physical type, though I'm not sure why. Could argue either way really!
Happy to see my boy Typhlosion. I have fond memories of playing Crystal as a kid and steamrolling through the league with him. With Flame Wheel, Earthquake, and Thunder punch, nothing even slowed him down until Lance. He's still one of my favorite starters to date, even though he's way worse in HG/SS because of the Special split and not getting Thunder Punch. And Charizard struggled exactly where I expected, Lance with his Gyarados and Aerodactyl. Rock Slide on a fast Mon is just devastating for him, and he didn't have an electric move to easily take out Gyarados. Absolutely LOVED this video!
Love these videos, looking forward to the water starters. However I think you possibly could've lowered Charizards time with Hidden Power electric. You said yourself in the conclusion the it lacked the coverage against water types in comparison to Typhlosion with Thunder Punch. It would have been good in the league as well against the Xatus and while not as good as Hidden Power ice against Lance, it would've helped against the Aerodactyl and the Charizard and with the usage of the rare candies beforehand, Dragon Breath probably would've handled the Dragonites. And obviously against Blue's Gyarados and Red's Blastoise it would have been great as well.
I really like the attitude to mistakes and optimisations that are pointed out in the comments. It sounds like "Yup, I made an oopsie." Nothing big, but it is adressed. Example, the Sprout Tower referenced repeatedly.
When I took over my brothers GameBoy Color, I also took over his pokémon games - red and silver. I always played the fire starters, always. This felt really nostalgic, thank you.!
good Vs Scott, I liked this one a lot. it highlighted something interesting to me, you got 2 Fire Types with the same stats and growth rate and a fairly similar opening moveset, so results were practically all down to the 2nd typing on Charizard and the learnset throughout the play through. I knew Charizard wouldn't do as well in this one, if it still could have Swords Dance like in Gen 1 and then Gen 3 onward or had access to Thunder Punch, again like in later generations, I think it would of done the same or maybe slightly better it might of done better. I'd be interested in seeing Charizard in Crystal with its Egg Moves, especially Belly Drum.
I'm going to guess Charizard will win this one because of just how soon he gets Flamethrower and a slightly more diverse move pool. However, Typhosion gets access to Thunder Punch to deal with water types and Rollout to deal with fire types. Honestly, Typhlosion has the home turf advantage. But if this were re-calculated with egg moves, Charizard would probably steamroll through the game rather quickly with Rock Slide and Bite to deal with Gastly rather quickly. Time will tell how these two ferocious flaming beasts will fair in a race against time and two entire regions of Pokémon. Edit: The end result is still quite interesting with how evenly matched both of them are. With Typhlosion having the advantage of thunder punch and hidden power ice. It is nutty just how reliant Pokemon are in gen 2 having access to both ice and electric coverage.
Very excited to watch this but still want to suggest that it might be better if the frontend of the overlay would reflect prospective damage ranges on secondary (and later) runs to remove human error when thinking about special vs physical. Lots of love.
Honestly these play throughs makes me wonder what it'd be like if you back porrted the starters and did a race with in gen 1 with something more like a gen two move set.
It appears that the endgame demonstrated REALLY well the importance of move pools. That coverage from Thunderpunch seems to have given Typhlosion a HUGE advantage
I haven't seen the three Kanto vs. video yet because I'm watching the solos playlist first and it isn't here. =P Loved seeing the name Sunflower after the hamster, that was super cute! I actually had a hamster that I named Tulip when I was a kid, so I empathize with the desire to name a hamster after a type of flower, haha.
I am pick Typhlosion basically because of thunder punch and lacking the flying type. Charizard has the same abysmal matchup vs Lance that Ho-oh had without the massive attack to help out. One has half of Lance’s team to worry about while the other has basically return for the entire team. Unless Typhlosion loses so much time elsewhere which I don’t really see I doubt Charizard in the first playthrough can pull it off.
21:50 Edit: I finished, and I am ALSO excited Ferligatr and Blastioise. Unrelated, but I have a few versus suggestions/ideas. 1. I want to see a battle between Magmar, Jynx, and Electabuzz in gen 1 (maybe gen 2 as well?) 2. I now want to see who will win? Pikachu vs. Eevee in Crystal. 3. I also want to see which Kanto Eeveelution comes out on top in Crystal, and how they compare to your Umbreon and Espeon results.
I feel like at the end we need to make an adjustment to the S Tier. It’s clear that there’s a ton of really good Pokémon now, but I always feel like tier lists should follow a normal distribution. Maybe
Ah, I just wanted to leave some advise for the Feraligatr vs Blastoise run. For Fer more specifically: 1- Skip Sprout tower, and head directly to Falkner. Fer should be able to sweep with rage. If the Pidgey only hits with tackle at least 2 times, that should be enough to build up enough rage to one shot Pidgeotto. 2- rage strats are also the way to go vs Bugsy, especially against Scyther. If it hits you with fury cutter at least twice, that should be enough, in addition to all the previous damage accumulated from the two cocoons. 3- to beat the rival before Ilex forest, and especially his Bayleef, you might have to temporarily teach fury cutter to Feraligatr. You can get rid of it as soon as you enter Ilex forest for Headbutt or Ice punch in goldenrod, but fury cutter might be the best way to beat his grass starter at that point. You can't build up rage cause he starts with a gosht. 4- Don't forget dig in Goldenrod. Feraligatr can learn dig. Ofc, you can also beat Whitney with rage spam, especially if she locks herself into rollout, but dig might also be useful. 5- For Morty, his goshts obviously don't have levitate, cause there's no abilities in this gen. But dig should be enough to get one shots on all his goshts. That in addition to bite should be enough to get you through him. 6- Chuck's Primeape should be an easy one shot with Surf. And Poliwrath might just be Feraligatr's first obstacle, cause it has nothing to hit other water types with. That's why I advise you to try and get return before Chuck to hit the Poliwrath and any other water types. If you can't, I guess headbutt should be enough. 7- If you do Pryce 1st, then by then you should have return for his two water types: Seel and Dewgong. Should be easy one shots, and Piloswine goes down to Surf. 8- Jasmine might seem intimidating at 1st glance, but don't fret. Her magnemites go down to dig, and Steelix goes down to one Surf. 9- Claire should also be easy. Either return (which is preferable because Fer has a higher attack) or ice punch the Dragonairs, and return the Kingdra. If Meganium could get one shots on them with return, so should Fer. 10- Against Will, you'll also have to rely on return, and kinda bite if you want to. I don't remember if Fer gets Crunch in gen 2, but Ik for sure it gets bite. You'll have to rely on it and return to get one shots. 11- Koga should also be easy with a mix of Surf, Earthquake and return. 12- Bruno is always easy. Just use return and e-quake. 13- Karen is challenging. You'll have to insist with e-quake on Umbreon. Luckily after it goes down, all her other mons are easy. Vileplume goes down to return, Gengar to earthquake and so does Houndoom. Murkrow is a joke. 14- Fer should not struggle vs Lance. Surf and Ice beam should carry you. Use return on Gyarados. 15- For red you might want to set up with curse after beating Pikachu, and sweep with either Earthquake or return. If you outspeed Pikachu, then take it down with Earthquake, and then proceed to set up with curse on Snorlax and get one shots on the rest of his team with either return or earthquake. If you ask me, a good moveset for Feraligatr for the Red fight, would be: curse, return, earthquake, and rest. With that, Red should not be too hard. With that, Fer should sweep through the game, it's less than ideal sp. Attack not a problem.
If it's the same story as with the grass and fire starters Scott won't be able to apply any of your advice for the water starts video. The runs have already been played the video is just in the final stages of production now.
Really impressed with how much Charizard improved between runs. I especially liked how you had the patience to eke out that first-time victory against Red in run 2. Nice race!
Dropping some knowledge on the different types of status conditions. I knew that confusion was different because it didn't persist outside of battle, but I didn't know what it was called in relation to the others.
Really fun video! I suspect that if you were to redo this race in Yellow version (with a back-ported Typhlosion) Charizard would win due to the prevalence of ground types and Earthquake, making the flying type a much stronger asset and without a Thunder punch TM Typhlosion wouldn't quite have the coverage advantage against Charizard. Still, it was very nice to see my favorite starter evolution line do well!
I have a general question: Do you think there is something like a perfect speed base stat for this type of format? One per game of course. Im asking this myself since Jolteon who kind of has.. too much, considering that each stat is kind of a tradeoff for a different one, and there are only so many pokemon you can outspeed. In gen 1 that would be different because of the critical hit rate. But ultimately there seem about 5 pokemon that speedcheck you in the higher speed levels being Alakazam of Sabrina, Dugtrio and maybe persian of giovanni, gengar of agatha and aerodactyl of the champ. Maybe Arcanine of blane. And some fights like Raichu against surge you rarely outspeed anyway because there is not much stat experience yet and you are underleveled.. which rarely ever matters at all. So depending on how much you care about each of these it feels like more than .. maybe 80 speed base stat is wasted. I dont know as much about other regions yet ( not even this video so far, that comes down the line )
The fire starters are my favourite, and in particular Typhlosion and Charizard,😊 which made me feel rooting for them both. These results were surprising me quite a lot, I thought that having a secondary type usually is better, but I guess that the last 2 videos were proving the point that not all secondary types are an advantage. But I think that charizard was dominating the early game because of its early access to flamethrower and to a flying move . But Typhlosion had the right coverage for each major battle . But if that match was held in gen 4 the results were really different.🤔 For now, I'm not sure if Feraligatr would win this one because it's more of a physical attacker , but blastoise has not so good moves in terms of level up . But I assume that these two will have similar results . One thing is for sure I'm really excited for this.😊
best poketuber on TH-cam constantly pumping videos even tho he has less than 100k sub i really hope u get millions hopefully in 10 years youll be living in a mansion and have everything you need and want you deserve it buddy btw im out of hospital and im able to completely walk on my own can even do most stairs now gained 15 lbs was close to dying i wont forget the day of surgery i woke up and one of first things i did was watch one of your videos you just released
It's kind of wild that Charizard isn't compatible with Thunder Punch in Gen 2 but is in the remakes. He got it in Platinum and has been compatible with it since.
Clicked this video just to figure out how long it took you to mention that Charizard and Typhlosion have the exact same base total. You did not disappoint. I don't know why that fact lives in my brain rent free though.
pretty close match up.Goes to show that even with same base stats, having a different type & movepool make a huge difference (in terms of effectiveness and time) looking forward to Krunch vs Ninja Turtle
I love Scott’s foreshadowing that sometimes a secondary typing gives you an advantage that pushes you over certain battles and anchors you in others. That’s 100% the case with Charizard. Typholision being a mono fire type with a little coverage gives it a small enough advantage over Charizard which is probably why I favored it over its Gen 1 counterpart.
Awesome video, i thought charizard would win but i was rooting for typlosion (cyndaquil is my favorite pokemon) so i was shocked and happy to see how close it is.
I really think you were misplaying on the Red fight, for example using return on snorlax when sunny day was still up. In fact, im pretty sure sunny day boosted flamethrower would actually do more damage to Blastoise than return, Blastoise has similar defenses but Charizard's SPA is like 250ish compared to its 200 attack. Maybe you can do a quick follow up video? Or maybe after you finish with all 6 starters you can do an addendum video. This race was just too close for comfort and i think we need to get scientific and careful with this run 😅
Cannot wait for Feraligatr versus Blastoise. The return of the immensely powerful Gen II Rage will probably give Feraligatr an edge over Blastoise in the early game, but also its stats are just kind of...better. It's really, imo, the first example of a base stat spread that has been tuned up compared to the rest. Also, as an aside, Feraligatr is only the speedrun Pokemon of choice for a little while iirc, they use RNG manip to pivot to Entei later on because well, yeah a Level 40 legendary Fire-type you can catch before Morty would be pretty good. I don't really have anything to say about the results of the video though. I think I expected Typhlosion to win? There's just less difference between these two than Meganium and Venusaur, and I think Thunderpunch was always going to be the difference maker between the two. The really high times between these two and Ho-Oh do suggest to me that Fire-types are probably positioned pretty well in Gen II as a whole, but we don't really have the data for it like we do in Gen I.
Do you think hidden power electric would have been a boon to charizard for opponents like gyarados and blastoise? I realize you give up some power with hp ice against dragon types, but it seems like the water types were slightly more problematic that I’m curious if hp electric would have smoothed that out.
HP electric tanks the HP DV makes Clair and Lance less consistent and Blue’s Gyarados isn’t really a threat. It might help against Red’s Blastoise but I already had the sunny day strat for that, so I didn’t think it was a good choice.
Probably somebody said this already, but blastoise is also the speed runners choice in the remakes of gen 1 (fire red and leaf green) So they are both speed champs in their own right, that run should be amazing!
Base stats are identical. Typhlosion may have trouble in the first gym. Charizard may have trouble in the...third? The one with the rolling cow. Lance's Aerodactyl needs to go down in one hit or the quadruple-effective Rock Slide is going to wreck Charizard. Poliwrath may give some trouble to Typhlosion, while Charizard may have Wing Attack by then. On balance I think Typhlosion barely takes it, but I'm rooting for Charizard. Pokemon Red was my first game in the franchise.
I agree with your assessment and prediction. Small note, Typhlosion will have Thunderpunch for Poliwrath, and can also take advantage of it in Pryce's gym and potentially for Kingdra.
About that Milktank is a PITA to fight if you don't kill her in 1 hit using ANY Pokemon including your OWN Milktank if you were do a Milktank only run.
@@veghesther3204 it can get out of control quickly, but not for the first two turns because it's not rock type and rpllput takes a while to build up. So aasumin you're outspeeding, a 3 hit should be fine.
Well in the Gen 2 games I could have Rollout 1 shot 6x LV 30 Pokemon instantly including Quilava itself if you don't beat it in 1 attack but in Crystal you actually would need to put it to sleep/Paralyze it twice due to its held item that cures that effect though Charizard/Typlosion don't really have a easy way to cause those effects to begin with. it also doesn't help that MOST Starters will be MALE and Milktank will use Attract IF possible.
Watching the first run with Charizard, i thought Solarbeam could've solved the problem with Blastoise, but i think the TM for Solarbeam is only in the gen 4 remakes
I think Charizard would have done better with Hidden Power Electric? Charizard already has Dragon Pulse for Claire and Lance's dragons and Hidden Power Electric could have dealt with the bulky late game water types such as Gyrados and Blastoise.
I recently found out something interesting about Flame Wheel while playing Crystal Clear. If you use it while you're frozen the attack will go through and unfreeze you.
I always wondered why flying is super effective against fighting but I think I figured it out. It's the natural survival mechanisms of flight vs fight. Running away from danger is better than fighting. Thus flying is super effective
Before watching: I don't think one will struggle significantly more than the other. Charizard has flying type and way earlier flamethrower and Typhlosion has Thunder Punch and Fire Punch as a slightly weaker flamethrower. Typhlosion also has earlier evolutions which may help with Morty. Edit: Oh I forgot you start fully evolved.
Why use the Pink Bow from the early route instead of the one that's more on the way in Radio Tower? Are there are battles where the Normal boost matters before then?
Yesterday I was thinking while doing de dishes: "I miss Scotts content..." Hahaha. Maybe I should consume then slowly 😂. Just start watching and, off course, loving it. Thx Scott. U ar helping a community to sustain the love of pokemon game lovers
Typlosion was my Ace when I bought Gold back when it came out. I purchased the Japanese version from a local GameStop and used Flameboi exclusively through the game. I solo’d the game with him using Flamethrower and Flame Wheel because they did big damage through the entire game once I learned them. I could only memorize what potions and poke balls were from the store since I couldn’t read the Japanese. Lol beat the entire game, including Red, with 0 knockouts and no guide. I just grinded enough as I wandered around from area to area. I think I ended the game with him being level 83. Flamethrower, Flame Wheel, Quick Attack, and I think Thunder Punch. It was a really fun experience to beat the game in Japanese before I ever got it in English!
I recently did a playthrough of Crystal on my 3DS with a Typhlosion. I was super lucky to get a full power hidden power ice DV Typhlosion, which was absolutely amazing to play with! That is definitely the best combo for Typhlosion in Gen 2!
Overall, Fire type is much better in Johto (Gen 2) than in Kanto, since they do not have many struggles as they do in Kanto (Gen 1), like Lorelei's Lapras, Lance's Gyarados, Yellow Giovanni, Misty, and Champion's Sandslash and Cloyster, relying on STAB Fire Blast for those that learn Flamethrower late or cannot learn Flamethrower, like Arcanine and Moltres, having move puddles for some, like Flareon and even Moltres, and having very middling Special for most Fire types except for Ninetales, Flareon, and Moltres. In Johto, they resist Ice, have better Special Attack than in Gen 1 except for Ninetales (Nerf), Moltres (Same), Rapidash (Same), and Flareon (Nerf), have better access to Flamethrower at slightly earlier levels for some Fire types, and their weaknesses are not as problematic or exploitable as they were in Gen 1 other than Water types. There's not a lot of Earthquake or Rock Slide users in Gen 2 compare to later Gens, where teams have far better diverse movesets. The matchups in Johto are way better for Fire types than Grass types, since Fire hits at least neutral or Super Effective against everyone but Clair and Lance. As for the runs themselves, coverage is the name of the game for Typhlosion. Thunder Punch is the main thing it has over Charizard's Flying type. Thunder Punch really helps against Water types, allowing it to run Hidden Power Ice for Lance. And, there's no major trainer that uses a Water/Ground type until Gen 3, where Hidden Power Grass would be an option for Fire types. Charizard not having Thunder Punch hurts, since it would have to choose either HP Electric for the Water types or HP Ice for the Dragonites. Still, both of them have a very good time for Johto thanks to their overall matchups in Johto. I wonder how will the Water starters fare. Water is a consistently excellent type throughout the series.
I’m an all time water starter, and I LOVED Blastoise and Feraligatr, and I’m not sure what you’re gonna get for the out come of their face off, but as much as a love Blast, I feel like if you were to do this challenge in HGSS, Gatr would be an ABSOLUTE BEAST with the physical/special split
Even without it Normal + Water coverage hits everything in Gen 2 neutrally and Feraligatr has significant advantage over Blastoise in attack stat opposed to Blastoise only having a very slight advantage in Special Attack.
31:40 Use Thunder Punch?? Also, Feraligatr is the speedrunning Pokemon for Johto thanks to Rage. They have to use Totodile vs Falkner and Croconaw vs Bugsy, so they can't steamroll with a fully evolved Pokemon, and Rage is broken in Gen 2. Rage stacks in power going from 1x to 2x to 3x and so on until it's at 255x power whenever you click Rage, even if you miss. It's absolutely broken and you should remember it for Feraligatr if there are fights with multiple Pokemon he can't oneshot back to back, because by the 3rd or 4th Pokemon in that fight, Rage could likely OHKO everything that's left. Obviously max friendship Return outdamages Rage since Rage starts at 20 power and Return is 102 power, but Feraligatr *_starts_* with Rage.
Hi Scott, question on the 25% debuff to opponent status accuracy: What does that do to the total accuracy of a move like hypnosis? Does it set it to 75% therefore buffing it, deduct 25% in addition to its normal accuracy or does it only debuff down to 75% if the accuracy is already higher? Thanks for the content!
Rage is kind of fun against Whitney, when her Clefairy uses Double Slap and every single hit from it boosts Rage. Obviously not the most efficient when the alternative is to knock out Clefairy in one hit and Miltank in two, but fun.
It is just weird to see Typhlosion having a better moveset than Charizard because that changed with Gen 3 where Charizard gaining access to Belly Drum and Dragon Claw, and this gap keeps widening from there. As shown with Ampharos Electric is a good typing for Crystal so I am very interested to see how Electabuzz will perform. It just might have all the tools neccessary to get a really good time. With it it might even be the case that HP Fighting is picked for Red's Snorlax (and Karen's Umbreon) specifically because it can handle everything else.
I predict Feraligatr. Neither it nor Blastoise have good special attack, so they're bad at attacking within their element. Blastoise wastes a lot of points in special defense in a game where electric and grass don't have terrific representation. Feraligatr has 22 points more attack, equal defense and speed, and a little more hp. Same base stat totals, but Feraligatr is simply optimized better for this environment. It also starts with a better water move. Teachable moves, where they matter, are the same.
after the Kanto vs Johto starters videos maybe you can eek out an extra video doing Bellossom vs Vileplume (another Kanto vs Johto but with Gloom Evolutions)
I have no particular comment to make, so here's some competitive GSC tidbits. Although the Fire type is still not that great in GSC OU, there are FIVE Fire types in the Borderline tier, including Charizard and Typhlosion along with Houndoom, Moltres, and Entei. Charizard's niche compared to other Fire types is interesting in that it is based around using Charizard's relatively weak Attack power. By breeding Charizard with Snorlax though, you can get a Charizard with Belly Drum, making it the fastest user of that move available. Just set up a Belly Drum and use Rock Slide and Earthquake to defeat everything... at least everything that isn't faster and capable of using super effective moves (Starmie, Raikou, Gengar, etc). Typhlosion's niche comes from not being a Flying type like Moltres and Charizard (thus taking less damage from Electric and Rock moves), being more Special-oriented than Entei, and having access to Thunder Punch. It can serve as a mixed attacker using Fire Blast, Thunder Punch, and/or Hidden Power Grass/Ice along with Dynamic Punch and/or Earthquake. That said, you might notice that there's not enough move slots available, and not all of these moves are amazing, so Typhlosion can be played around once its gimmick is figured out.
27:18 I’m only saying this because I know how much polish you like to give your videos, I think it’d be neat if the trainers and their aces dropped on the beat. Basically split Will/Xatu and Koga/Crobat like you do with Bruno, Machamo, Karen, and Houndoom. Also, I was today years old when autocorrect revealed the pun behind Crobat’s name: acrobat. Which, in hindsight, probably explains it’s ludicrous speed stat.
Wow!!! This was so exciting to see! I absolutely loved it! Btw you should just put Ditto in the impossible section. 🤣 I don't think u can beat the game with Ditto at all, may as well just put that cute lil' pink blob right in there.
Hi everyone, and welcome back to another installment of "Both of these two pokemon can learn mud-slap, but Gligar can not!"
*cries in gligar*
As well as earthquake.
Gligar the worst bat pokemon
Welcome to Jackass!
Technically it can though through 100%ing stadium 2
I'll never get tired of Lance's introduction, with the 3 Dragonite's just appearing like Hiya!
Yeah, that’s my favourite intro! I had so much fun making it.
3 inappropriately leveled Dragonites at that.
*Champion Lance won't stop talking.
Honestly I think it might have been better against the Gyarados in the run than HP Ice, and maybe the dragonite? Idk
Gligar struggling w HP ground... 😢
Funny enough, if he started out as their first form and evolved them charizard wouldn't even get flamethrower unless he used the move tutor
The attention to detail and overall thoroughness are so refreshing when compared to something like jrose's hour-long infoless whine-a-tons.
Water gun is so good.
Typhlosion will get Eruption in Gen IV which might help it hit really hard.
@@snakeywakey3893 Fire Blast + scope lens is a pretty good alternative that you can get pretty early in every gen 4 game
and charizard has a double rock weakness to rock and got a electric weakness atop of the weakness it already has
Compared to Typhlosion
At Level 57, so not really.
Scott's thumbnail art don't miss
Aura Sphere moment
Kowtow Cleave moment as well
I think it’s awesome seeing just how much better you’ve gotten at Crystal, especially how much of an impact it makes cutting out Sprout Tower and memorizing the dark areas without Flash.
Typhlosion didn't actually win,he just fcked up some things on his charizard playthrough
"And this is nice, because with my Rare Candies..."
Good to hear a plan come together.
You are a master of your craft sir. But I have to admit... I'm the most excited for Blastoise VS Feraligatr. I love me some Water starters!
Charizard doesn’t get Solar Beam in Gen 2.
Wow, I'm honestly surprised the winner won, but I'm glad because I like that pokemon! Very good video Scott, thank you!
I'd be interested in seeing Charizard in Crystal with its Egg Moves, especially Belly Drum.
also, non-volatile status conditions persist when a pokemon switches out (unless the pokemon with it has natural cure, but that's only in later gens)
There's a reason "Boltbeam" is such a hallowed combo in Pokemon
Very excited to watch this but still want to suggest that it might be better if the frontend of the overlay would reflect prospective damage ranges on secondary (and later) runs to remove human error when thinking about special vs physical. Lots of love.
Honestly these play throughs makes me wonder what it'd be like if you back porrted the starters and did a race with in gen 1 with something more like a gen two move set.
It appears that the endgame demonstrated REALLY well the importance of move pools.
That coverage from Thunderpunch seems to have given Typhlosion a HUGE advantage
Awesome:) Did not expect thunderpunch to make that much of an impact. Looking forward to the water starters, my favourites!
I haven't seen the three Kanto vs. video yet because I'm watching the solos playlist first and it isn't here. =P
Loved seeing the name Sunflower after the hamster, that was super cute!
Agreed. Pretty sure everyone has beaten gen 2 with just typlosion and a water pokemon
21:50
Edit: I finished, and I am ALSO excited Ferligatr and Blastioise.
Unrelated, but I have a few versus suggestions/ideas.
1. I want to see a battle between Magmar, Jynx, and Electabuzz in gen 1 (maybe gen 2 as well?)
For Fer more specifically:
1- Skip Sprout tower, and head directly to Falkner.
I'm only at the first playthrough with charizard, but wouldn't flamethrower do more damage in the sun than return
I have a general question:
Do you think there is something like a perfect speed base stat for this type of format?
Typhlosion was my starter in my first game. The memories of my dear Volcano are coming back.
These have been awesome man! Absolutely love getting to see pokemon in a new light.
But if that match was held in gen 4 the results were really different.🤔
For now, I'm not sure if Feraligatr would win this one because it's more of a physical attacker , but blastoise has not so good moves in terms of level up .
Hope you're doing better. As someone who had a major health issue I know how much it sucks. Be strong and keep watching good TH-cam videos
19:54 - Incorrect. You can buy and use a Pokedoll to escape the Red Gyarados. The game acts as if you defeated it.
It's kind of wild that Charizard isn't compatible with Thunder Punch in Gen 2 but is in the remakes. He got it in Platinum and has been compatible with it since.
Maybe they realized how badly he needs it!
Typloshion would certainly win if there was a young girl at the finish line
broooo noooooooo
Wtf?
Clicked this video just to figure out how long it took you to mention that Charizard and Typhlosion have the exact same base total. You did not disappoint. I don't know why that fact lives in my brain rent free though.
Holy I’ve been a sun since you had 1k subs happy to see you at 60k man you deserve it
pretty close match up.Goes to show that even with same base stats, having a different type & movepool make a huge difference (in terms of effectiveness and time)
looking forward to Krunch vs Ninja Turtle
I love Scott’s foreshadowing that sometimes a secondary typing gives you an advantage that pushes you over certain battles and anchors you in others. That’s 100% the case with Charizard. Typholision being a mono fire type with a little coverage gives it a small enough advantage over Charizard which is probably why I favored it over its Gen 1 counterpart.
This is currently my favorite TH-cam series! I'm so excited to keep watching your content❤🎉
Great video Scott. Can't wait for the water starters brawl
I just checked and Feraligatr is still the top pick for speed running the entire game for both the English and Japanese records.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon thank you for the insight. Keep up the good work. I’ve been really enjoying your content.
Probably somebody said this already, but blastoise is also the speed runners choice in the remakes of gen 1 (fire red and leaf green) So they are both speed champs in their own right, that run should be amazing!
Impressive that they were so close together! Great runs
I wonder if Charizard could utilize Hidden power electric or grass and Dragonbreath to get through some of the tougher fights.
Yeah same, at least with hidden power grass it will get a slight boost if he still uses sunny day to counter the rain dance.
Grass moves don't get any buffs in sun
@@jameswhite2308 nah? We’ll never mind then haha
You are correct in the sense that Charizard can only be taught solar beam via tm until gen 4 and onward.
Scott youre the best thanks for the content man
I think Charizard would have done better with Hidden Power Electric? Charizard already has Dragon Pulse for Claire and Lance's dragons and Hidden Power Electric could have dealt with the bulky late game water types such as Gyrados and Blastoise.
I'm excited for your 6th generation butterfly battle: butterfree vs beautifly vs vivillon coming soon several years from now.
You're on fire with these videos!
Why use the Pink Bow from the early route instead of the one that's more on the way in Radio Tower? Are there are battles where the Normal boost matters before then?
Ironic in future gens, Charizard does get Thunderpunch but not in original Gen 2. Weird but funny too. At least this was a great video!
Yeah early gen move sets are weird like that.
Yesterday I was thinking while doing de dishes: "I miss Scotts content..." Hahaha. Maybe I should consume then slowly 😂. Just start watching and, off course, loving it. Thx Scott. U ar helping a community to sustain the love of pokemon game lovers
Great video. One question does Charizard and Typhlosion have the same IVs?
Happy for typhlosion's results. Good work.
Hi Scott, question on the 25% debuff to opponent status accuracy:
What does that do to the total accuracy of a move like hypnosis? Does it set it to 75% therefore buffing it, deduct 25% in addition to its normal accuracy or does it only debuff down to 75% if the accuracy is already higher?
Thanks for the content!
Rage is kind of fun against Whitney, when her Clefairy uses Double Slap and every single hit from it boosts Rage. Obviously not the most efficient when the alternative is to knock out Clefairy in one hit and Miltank in two, but fun.
Awesome video again Scott!
Have you ever had an Arepa?
What is that?
23:01 as a Feraligatr fan, hearing this makes me really happy 😁
It is just weird to see Typhlosion having a better moveset than Charizard because that changed with Gen 3 where Charizard gaining access to Belly Drum and Dragon Claw, and this gap keeps widening from there.
As shown with Ampharos Electric is a good typing for Crystal so I am very interested to see how Electabuzz will perform. It just might have all the tools neccessary to get a really good time. With it it might even be the case that HP Fighting is picked for Red's Snorlax (and Karen's Umbreon) specifically because it can handle everything else.
Charizard had Belly Drum in Gen 2.
@@yorecf9641 TIL. I guess Salac Berry was what made BellyZard a thing in comp
@@shreeble7113 everything no longer having max bulk probably helped as well.
I always thought it weird that a Pokémon learns a move its weak against.. like seriously doesnt digging underground harm a capable fire Pokémon lol
"roll the Whiney intro" I see what you did there
ChaRIZard's back sprite looks so awesome in this game!
after the Kanto vs Johto starters videos maybe you can eek out an extra video doing Bellossom vs Vileplume (another Kanto vs Johto but with Gloom Evolutions)
I was about to ask ‘Didn’t these two have the same stats?’ RIGHT as Scott started talking about it 😂
I never really appreciated Typhlosion’s design until now. Thinking of it as a very, very angry hamster instantly makes it good
As soon as you said your were going to do a fire starter run i knew thunderpunch was gonna be massive
33:35 You sure Dragonite resists Electric, there, Scott?
We will find out on Sunday.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Ohhhhh snaps!!! The Ditto challenge is happening OMG! I can't wait to see this!!! 🥹
