I'd like to mention that I saw a video of someone defeating red with ditto by going in with no PP and holding a mystery berry. They crit the Pikachu, espeon came out and they ate the berry, they transformed into espeon. And from there you use swift and mud slap to defeat espeon and Psychic for everything else. Keep in mind you need a lot of crits and misses but it's theoretically possible.

A run with Ditto is insane man, I needed constant video audio to keep myself sane during the grinding... After Ditto, I take my hatred on Wobbuffet back, least Wobbuffet could handle a lot of battles! .. it could attack! LOL I did totally forget about the king's rock, forgot the item actually existed in this game, well done!
as per usual, this video was incredible, Scott! have you ever thought about doing an Unknown challenge? could even make it so you have a team of multiple Unknown, each with a different type of Hidden Power! I'm guessing optimization could bring it down to 2 or 3 (Rock/Ground and Ice) although I'd love to see a team of 5-6 so you could spell out S-C-O-T-T or something with them. take care, greatly appreciate all of your content and dedication to your craft!
That is a first, a pokemon that can't beat Red even under the most ideal circumstances. Like Linkin Park said: "I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter"
There is another commenter here who claims a strategy he didn't consider can work, though. Mystery Berry! This would allow transforming into Espeon instead. However, that would require 7 consecutive critical hits....
I know we just finished a vs series but super keen to see the fossil Pokémon vs match up in Crystal. Still find it a bit odd that they didn't introduce a new pair of fossil Pokémon in gen 2 but then it became a staple of the series.
I'm sure this video was painful for you to make but what a masterpiece Scott! The fact that you used items people didn't even know or people haven't seen in years was truly amazing. Also, I thought you were going to name Ditto: DADitto 😅 maybe next time
If you ever plan to play something like this again, using the fishing rod to face magikarps would be more consistent than grinding for hoppips- even though its a bit after facing falkner- maybe that input gives you an idea for something :) great video as always, you really suffer for our entertainment
This is going to be a painful one. Something I hope you'll do in the future is a gen 1 modified run with a Ditto who also learns Mimic. It'd be interesting to see if it can finish the game with just Transform and Mimic and what battles are easier by using Mimic vs using Transform and vice versa.
The effort you put into providing the viewer with info and context is insane. Going so far as to show us the exact stats of opposing Pokémon is so cool. How do you manage that?
Man this video must have been insufferable to make! I just wanna say I appreciate all the hard work you do for us, the audience! One interesting interaction I noticed was with the Unown battles. Your Ditto should have a Dark type Hidden Power due to being genetically perfect. However, with one Unown, it dealt neutral damage to you when you transformed and then your Hidden Power also dealt neutral damage when it should have been Dark damage aka super effective. Meaning when you copy the opponent’s stats, you also copy their Hidden Power type (at least in Gen 2).
This video really does have it all: Comically absurdly bad supersonic luck, fainting against almost every fight in the game including Pryce AND the Red Gyrados (lol), 100+ resets, a super rare item no one has thought about in years, and the first Crystal DNF. I hope you don't get the nightmarish idea to try University Magikarp in Crystal as this was brutal enough!
What an amazing effort! It’s a shame to see transform strats fall away for a massive struggle grind. I wonder if you could do a spin-off video down the track where you explore some major battles late game with either the low pp from transform tweaked in the rom (if that’s even possible) or just the pressure of finishing a run removed so you can talk through what transform might look like in the elite 4, blue and red battles? Or there’s a great suggestion for giving ditto mimic on another comment! Thanks for such amazing content, Scott! The races were such a treat while I’m on the road for work. ❤
So, I’ve got a suggestion here. JRose calls challenges like these, “impossible,” and the rule sets are a bit different. More lenient to be sure. With Pokémon like Ditto, where it’s obvious they’re going to take more than 3 hours, I think you should be able to bring rare items, like the Metal Coat, into the game. I suggest this because a Pokémon taking that long to finish isn’t going to dramatically affect the rankings no matter what you do. No matter what, love the content!
So, ironically, my birthday is also on Father's day. And this was a great father's day/birthday treat. I was rooting HARD for ditto to just beat the game. I think it would of been nice to see red get taken down with the use of items. Can't wait to see the "struggle" in yellow.
As far as I understand, one other relevant stat survives transforming, besides HP: the user’s level is kept, which is used in damage calculation, so a higher-level ditto can do more damage while transformed into the same pokémon with the same Attack. It’s small relative to the gains from actually gaining Attack from one’s level-ups, but it can help a bit. Not so much in this run where transforming was almost never an option, though.
There is one way you might be able to beat Red: 0. Have King's Rock attached 1. Transform into Pikachu, Thunder/Charm miss. 2. Crit every electric move + paralyze. 3. Waste the remainder of your PP against something that keeps getting fully paralyzed. You then need need to do enough damage with Thunder(bolt) and Quick Attack so that Struggle recoil doesn't KO. To survive with 1 HP you need (350 - 298) * 4 = 208 HP of damage. I don't know if recoil damage is rounded up or down, but if it's rounded up, then you'll need an extra 12 HP (assuming three Struggle hits for his last 4 mons), so you'll need (350 - 280) * 4 = 280 damage. If you can get this from Red's mons, you can win if everything goes right. tl;dr transforming into Pikachu first lets you do enough damage to prevent Struggle recoil from killing you. In a perfect game, the only stats that matter are your HP and speed if flinches/paralysis prevent you from hitting you.
It would be cool, if transform confuses the opponent. This way, there would be a chance, that the opponent would not have a free hit in every fight. I mean it could make sense because the other Pokemon would be like "wait a minute, that thing was something else like a second a go"
Shez le Feck! I knew Ditto was nowhere near as good as its animated counterpart, but this is straight up embarrassing. It did pretty well in certain places, however it isn't tough enough to go all the way. Perhaps Ditto would be an interesting addition to Clay Fighter. Perhaps a baby Pokémon competition to fill in some of the lower end of the board. Or Shuckle, perhaps? Hoothoot? Take a breather. You deserve it!
Big news, struggle does NOT do typeless damage, it actually gets boosted by pink bow! Hopefully this improves some of your times ;) Check the first minute of last video by Snowy "How does typeless damage ACTUALLY work in Gen 2 Pokémon?", he explains it in depth
One bit of critique: I think when it's possible for Transform to work on a gym leader or rival battle, you should try it at least once. So far that's just Whitney, I think the Clefairy could potentially win with Metronome and its other moves, but it's more interesting tactically than just using Struggle for every major battle. I'll come down here and list the battles that I think Transform could potentially win. Whitney (as mentioned), Chuck maybe, Pryce if your affinity for Rest would win you it, Bruno seems possible but then you'd have to use Transform for Karen which, lmao. Blaine and maybe Jasmine seem possible, but otherwise the major fights just don't work.
Totally worth allowing the use of Roar to switch his Transform target. Unless there's a potential romhack where the AI will send out a random pokemon at the start to also potentially allow ditto to win via Transform.***At least to test if blue or red become possible.
Ditto’s eyes make it look like a soulless Pokémon. What have you seen! Hopefully Scott’s soul remains intact for this play through, I mean it can’t be worse than Seel…right? (Made this comment early in the video while you explain the growth rate)
Been waiting for this video lol I love the videos where you port a pokemon back a generation. How hard would it be to do something similar but with types? Like adding Dark, Steel or Fairy into yellow?
@ Scott's Thoughts hey Scott theres actually more gold berries in the ruins of alph in crystal at the Aerodactyl puzzle once you have surf and flash you can get into secret room with it and the ho oh puzzle but unfortunately youd have to alsp have ho oh and in your 1st party slot too in order to get that one...
Wobbuffet fact: It has its own item in Pokemon mystery dungeon, Wobbu-Sweat wich boosts attack wich is untypical for a pokemon that cant attack in the mainline games of that gen.
Part of me wonders if they could revamp transform so that you can choose one of the last 4 pokemon you fought as your pool of transformations. Probably would be too abusable, but I feel like there is a way to make it more interesting. The Morph ability in later generations definitely helped though!
I dont know how hard this would be to edit/mod into the game, but just for the gimmick I would love the magikarp trainer actually having a shiny magikarp. Like a lvl 5 useless shiny magikarp on his team, so he gets a bit of lore. Also Im quite curious if Metal Powder would make a noticable difference, could be interesting for a meme run.
As long as ditto doesn't turn into Gligar, it can learn mud-slap from nearly any other pokemon

Loved seeing "Dad's Berserk Gene activated". And so was born a generation of horrifying mutant offspring.
There is one way you might be able to beat Red:
0. Have King's Rock attached
I mean it could make sense because the other Pokemon would be like "wait a minute, that thing was something else like a second a go"
Wow, what a treat! I expect this one to be brutal!
I'd love to see a baby pokemon vs challenge!
Good attempt with ditto, what a struggle ;p
I've always thought it was funny that the path in Faulkner's gym is the shape of a dollar sign
Quite a doozey for father's day! Keep up the grand work, champ!
Happy father's day scott, your our pokemon challenge dad!
Man, that playthrough really was a...struggle
*Guitar riff*
I love ditto 💗 awwww
Still cute n its one my top 5 favourite pokemon
Shiny ditto is like one the better shiny
I lol'd when I saw the happy Father's Day, that was a great one
Ditto, Cloyster, Caterpie, Sandshew!
Bulbasaur, Charmander, Golem, Pikachuuu!
At least 150 or more to see
somehow...in the pokemon universe..this probably the most fitting pokemon for both father and mothers day....
Hopefully this improves some of your times ;)
Check the first minute of last video by Snowy "How does typeless damage ACTUALLY work in Gen 2 Pokémon?", he explains it in depth
No wonder my dad still hasn't come back from the grocery store. Look how long it takes a dad to beat Pokemon Crystal!
knocking out suicune reminds me of when you knock out ho-oh in heartgold and talk to the kimono girls and they're like "ummm...."
I assume this run is going to be a real struggle 😉
Looking forward to seeing you go through those 6 koffing with that executive lmao
Ditto’s eyes make it look like a soulless Pokémon. What have you seen! Hopefully Scott’s soul remains intact for this play through, I mean it can’t be worse than Seel…right? (Made this comment early in the video while you explain the growth rate)
Been waiting for this video lol
I love the videos where you port a pokemon back a generation.
Another variation on it is Ditto, but you can use certain items like PP restores and such to get around the 5 PP problem. Or maybe multiple dittos.
Ahh nice, 1 hour and 15 minutes of good time right ahead, thank you very much
Absolutely love ditto for fathers day 🤣 he's got about as many kids as Nick Cannon does
Wobbuffet fact: It has its own item in Pokemon mystery dungeon, Wobbu-Sweat wich boosts attack wich is untypical for a pokemon that cant attack in the mainline games of that gen.
That was somehow both incredibly entertaining and hard to watch! 😂
52:14 I guess it's fitting that, since Gen 3, Ditto's Ability is Limber!
Damn what a painful playthrough. I love it!
Part of me wonders if they could revamp transform so that you can choose one of the last 4 pokemon you fought as your pool of transformations. Probably would be too abusable, but I feel like there is a way to make it more interesting.
The Morph ability in later generations definitely helped though!
Ditto's just that one Pokemon that you always leave behind in the daycare for.... whatever reason....
This is a great father's Day gift for me!
Oh, Pikasprey is gonna love this one :)
Wow I can't wait for you to do the optimized run!
