It tries to lock everyone into a box. No two heads are the same. Some of us are a few different curl types depending on what part of the head.

I would call those little ringlets 3f 💁♀️. I think type 4 hair should be for non uniformed patterns like zig zags with waves, straight, and curls mixed in.

I think the problem with the hair typing system is the lack of consideration to variables, most people fall in between types.

Exactly, I feel like what your hair appears vs what your hair feels like and how your hair acts when it’s manipulated, vary in family members let alone the rest of the world. Especially if we’re only using ourselves as the standard.
Who classified hair as A-D, Kinky, course, etc? We are permitting world's limiting boxes. Question is why.

This hair style with the white shirt and gold earrings makes you look like a greek goddess 😍 Also, love your videos! As a white woman I really respect black people's relationship to their hair. When I first discovered videos about natural hair I was blown away. The culture, the history, the shared community - and the work and upkeep! I have curly hair myself which is quite thick and coarse - but you know, it's still white scandinavian hair so yeah. Anyways, I actually learnt a lot by watching natural hair routines and styling. Not that all of it applies to me - but I have definitely gotten some advice that I now use all the time. My curls have gotten so much smoother, curlier, bouncier, shinier etc etc. And they can last for a few days as well.
Anyways - I want to say thank you for building this community on TH-cam!

I felt that. No curl but it's the next day. I've been there.
So im a 2C/3A and my hair nearly doubles in length when stretched and surprises everyone, but even im amazed what 4 curls do when stretched! That being said damn im so jealous of you ladies who can do afro puffs. So dang cute.
I wish I could remember where, but I read it’s better to go by curl type instead of that number chart because that way it’s more accurate (something to do with the person who came up with the number system). But that blow out though!
Yes Green Beauty does the letter of your curl shape (L, S, O, and Z) I believe those are it
Latoya Ebony does a video on the hair characteristics that groups it into types. Forget the name of the system, but it takes into account porosity and shine, I really liked it.
But yeah, I think the type 1-4 chart is more about curl size/diameter. Doesn’t take into account the shape of the curl. For example, she showed the person whose curls were tiny coils/springs, but I, fo example, have 2 curls near my temple that do that, and the rest are more zigzag or something.
Idk if that makes sense at all lol, but when you have characteristics like shine, porosity, curl size, and curl shape and others I’m not aware of, you get a ton of different combinations

the guy who came up with the system didn't even include 4C hair. he also said 4C is too hard to manage and should just be straightened 💀💀
@@hani6364 The prejudice and ignorance of him was beyond us and didn't cater to any afro-textured hair. But it was all we had to go by for years. We need to do away with his ignorant system

Used to be a notion that 4c can only be an undefined nebulous fluffy beautiful cloud. I didn’t know I had tiny coils that could clump together into a “curl” pattern that looks exactly like that “4c” drawing on the chart until my hair was properly hydrated and trained by frequently doing wash-N-go’s. It’s probably attainable for most “4c” heads of hair but it takes time and consistency and the coils get trained to be defined and clump together in a pattern. I definitely think all small/tiny coil patterns that look like a spring from a pen fall into the 4c category and there is a range of diameter size within the category as you pointed out 🙂
I'm about to start training my hair! I did my first was and go not too long ago a GIRL !! When I went to wash my hair it remained defined and wasn't super tangled 😭 more naturals need to discover it!
Yes, same. When I first big chopped, my hair was kind of how Chizi described, twisting and turning all over lol. And I still have strands like that but after a year of mini twist outs and wash and go's, I have way more clumps on my head that look exactly like what 4A, 4B, and 4C look like in the chart (yup I have all 3 types on my head lol). So it is possible to get that type 4 chart look but you really do need to be styling your hair in a particular way ALL the time.
I agree! I feel like it’s obtainable for everyone in the 4C community. I use Aztec clay EVERYTIME I washed my hair and every time it would get more and more defined and clump together. I would say it took me like 3 years to get my hair like this.
Yes. Regular Cherry Lola + Bentonite clay treatments changed my hair game.

Yes, my 4c has strands with uniform coils mixed with stands that aren’t coils. The result is a puffy look with coils dispersed throughout.

Why all the 4cs with course hair wanna gatekeep with they follow fine haired siblings? It's this perception that black hair is only one way that we really need to let go of. Let's learn to honor our sameness and our differences with out all the judgement and assumptions.
They aren’t gatekeeping. Most thin 4c hair not like people’s usual 4c hair.
Saying that the chart is flawed is not gatekeeping. If a chart is lumping super coarse hair with fine ringlet type hair it isn't serving either group properly.

Debating who counts or doesn't count as 4c doesn't really matter. The best way to get the results you want is to find someone's hair whi matches yours the best and following them.
That is why they are debating.
Or figure out what works for your hair in particular. Because having the same curl pattern doesn’t mean your hair will react the same way to the same products and techniques

There’s tons of factors like porosity, density, actual thickness of your hair strands, the amount of humidity in your location, hair length, etc. Just because someone’s hair visually looks like yours absolutely doesn’t mean it will react the same which is honestly so annoying sometime lol
@@loopymomy2532 there no point in debating. Everyone will always have different opinions. There's barely any research in it. Find what's closest and try it, if it doesn't work. Find someone else. Its unfortunately just trial and error

I totally understand though. You said in a previous video about how how some of us were raised to see our hair as too much by parents that weren't always gentle or knowledgeable. We love our hair but not everyone else thinks we should is what I get from her post.

The only thing that is important is knowing your porosity. I don't even use the hair typing system; a system of division.

My hair also changes throughout the day/week based on when I washed it last and if I had to put my hair in a bun or left it down.

I have all type 4 hair on my head (4a, 4b and 4c) but mostly 4b, then 4a and 4c. I have the feeling that 4c hair is seen as the type which doesn't clump but that's wrong. My 4a and my 4c clump really well whereas some of my 4b clumps and some doesn't. The "clumping" ability of your hair has nothing to do with its type and that's what's confusing. We're used to see 4a hair that clumps and 4c hair doesn't but that's not the truth for everybody.
I think 4c hair is so pretty, it's really interesting and admiring at how much black men and women take care of their hair!! 😄
Hair is important to our culture, and another way to express oneself as a individual! It’s a pain in the ass, but well worth it😂

7:06 This is why I wear wigs... I have four different hair textures and none of them will let me live my best life. But on a positive note my hair is so long and healthy now. It only looks good braided or straightened and I only straighten my hair once a year.

Imma just drop my hot take and go. The "hair typing system" is literally just "good hair, bad hair" with different branding. Yes, curlier, coilier hair has different needs than looser hair. But the difficulty comes from generations of lost knowledge and techniques and not living in a society that is built to cater to afro hair. If you wouldn't expect every woman to have the same skin care routine based on whether they are light-skinned or dark-skinned it makes no sense to expect hair products to work the same for every woman based on her hair "type." Learn your porosity, make sure you have a good protein/moisture balance, do your protective styles and trim when necessary. Ta-da. Anything else is going to be tied up with preying on insecurities and euro-centric bs.
Curly chemistry on TH-cam is an excellent source for the science of afro hair and very helpful for figuring out Why certain products work and certain ones don't.
