The concrete thing was an old cooler. One of the first infrastructure items Mr. Rose built on the island was an ice factory. He advertised in the newspaper that Rose Island had "ice cold water" from deep underground, when infact he would just put ice and water in the concrete cooler. Spigots around the cooler (the holes all the way around) would let people refill their mugs and cups with ice cold water they thought was coming from deep underground. The eye-bolts at the top were the hinges and latch for the lid. The big metal thing at the 10 minute mark is the sound board from the piano that had been in the dance hall. I learned these things and others recently by visit the park and getting a guided tour from the Charlestown State Park naturalist, Jeremy Beavin. He also has videos on TH-cam where he discusses these, and other interesting facts about Rose Island.
If my memory serves me correct, this is back in what is now the Charlestown ( Indiana) State Park back by the " black powder" area of the Ammunition Plant. This area was constructed much later than the original I.A.A.P. plant, maybe around the Vietnam war,, and may have been only test ran a couple times and then shut down. I bet at a huge cost to the government ( us). Much of the plant has been demolished for new industrial park, including a huge Amazon plant. Some of the old Ammo plant buildings are still standing, mostly around gate # 19. Great video, very well explained..
This location intrigues me. There's a Channel, *"Adventures with Roger"* that explores various Indiana locations, with details to the History. I believe this place, and 1 other, has some Prior History. (They weren't preoccupied with "landscaping/lawn care.) lol
Nice video. I was just there last Saturday. I think my father mentioned Rose Island when I was a child. There is a Rose Island Road in Prospect, Kentucky. Perhaps people could also cross the river from there by ferry.
At 7:58 look like public sink where you wash your hand the holes are for the pipe where water come out and you cud see the concrite under the hole is not flat it have a little slope for the water drane
That concrete thing could be either a place to tie horses if horseback riding was allowed there and they could drink from the basin, or maybe it is a barbecue pit? Just guessing. I know we have "hitching posts" still existing around our small city and they look similar to this , but smaller.
I've been on a few Rose Island tours with a guide. The big rectangular concrete thing was essentially a water cooler. The advertisement said it came from some spring but apparently what actually happened is they take a big block of ice and put it in there and people could get cold water all day long from it.
so cool! i want to go here and see it for myself. also, i was thinking it would be neat to go in fall/winter when you don't have all the plant growth in the way of seeing some more artifacts. just a thought.
I wonder if jeffersonville would even exist if Rose Island was actually repaired. Because that was like, the ORIGINAL amusement park. And, Jeff keeps annexing Charlestown. It's kind of annoying, cause they won't move the signs yet, the entirety of river ridge is in Jeff now. Like, cmon bruh. And I will never say "jeffersonville ammunition plant" because that will always be the Charlestown Ammo Plant. Even when I leave this place.

Wonderful exploration. I found this very interesting and I can't wait for part 2. You are providing so much knowledge of our area. Good job.

My grandmother used to say the box was a mini ship for kids
Rose island had the very first filtrated pool in the midwest
Nobody bothers too mention the old Rose Island Fort that closed in 1867... on the northeast side of the island.
Nice explore. im in Louisville this week would you want to collab?
