I would honestly recommend using squid man!!! A ton of species eat squid so that will literally increase your chances by a lot! Plus it stays on the hook really well
I have a question what size line and what rig do you use? I just moved here a few years ago and I’m trying to get more involved with saltwater fishing I grew up only fishing in rivers so it’s a big change for me.
This is such a complex question, and requires a very long answer. This specific video I was fishing a 40lb knocker rig. If you aren’t familiar with that rig, it’s basically a simplified Carolina rig. But depending on what kind of fishing I’m doing i fish as low as 15lb and all the way up to 300lb leaders. I’ve spent the last 10 years reading and doing research and most importantly talking to the people who have been doing it a lot longer than I have out on the water. I try and learn something new every time I fish. There is so much knowledge and experience that goes into fishing Southern California and that’s one of the main reasons why I love it! Sit back and enjoy the ride man, welcome to one of the most amazing fisheries in the world. Tight lines
You might want to try circle hooks. They would have kept the ray from getting hooked on the stomach and they probably would have prevented the hook pull on your first fish.
@@fired_up_fishing You don't need to set a circle hook. Let the fish swallow the bait and swim away. The line pulls the hook out of the fish and the hook catches the corner of the mouth. It's a good, solid hookup.
@@dwightjones3305 for sure man!! Haha I’ve been fishing circle hooks for years, I have plenty of them in my tackle box! Just wasn’t fishing them that day. Tight lines 🤙
@@1surfpesca_ circle hooks can definitely prevent cut hooks, but it isn’t 100% full proof. Especially when rays just suck your bait right up like a vacuum
Interesting catch. Never heard of that kind of shark before. You know if you used circle hooks you could have probably saved 15% or more on your car insurance 🙂

Not even a secret spot ha. Nice hook ups!
Nice smoothy bud. I live nearby and usually hit it for quick spotty sessions. Word on the street is there are some good sized soupfins back there. 🦈

I agree completely, and I use circle hooks. BUT. I’ve still gut Hooked a Ray with a circle hook. Felt real bad
