      True, good first attempt, nice interior, exterior slightly nicer than a Model 3.
      As regards fit and finish, let's see when the first lot have been here for a year or so.
      On all other metrics the Model 3 has it.

    This is kinda dumb... when u talk acceleration, u compare it to the Model 3 Performance, when u talk range, u compare it to the Model 3 Long Range... each one specifically built for a reason. This car had no chance for you to say it's better than the Tesla for anything. Next time compare apples to apples. This vs a Tesla Model SR+. From acceleration to build quality and price. You'd be surprised at how much they actually compare.

      As another comment pointed out, though it makes it confusing and makes the Polestar sound worse than it really is, the Model 3 Long Range beats the Polestar 2 on acceleration, and the Model 3 Performance beats it on range.
      Both of which have a 3kwh smaller battery too, as said in the video though, the Polestar 2 beats most other EVs though by a long shot, it's a really good attempt!

    I hear that the Polestar 2 is a lot quieter than the Tesla 3 in terms of road and wind noise. That's important on the motorways. Driving refinement should have been discussed in the video.

    • @VoxelLoop
      @VoxelLoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He didn't compare it, but, he did say potholes are very loud. Another video I watched said it was quite loud inside (Car Pervert I believe), but that's likely due to the 20" wheels; The Model 3 Performance gets a lot of noise for the same reason too.
      (The Model Y had better seals at release and is much quieter inside, this hasn't been pushed back to the Model 3 yet though to note! You still likely want aftermarket door seals to improve window noise in the Model 3)

  • @DS-pk4eh
    @DS-pk4eh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Lets start with real things:
    We should compare it to Tesla Model 3 Long Range (not basic, not Performance) cause those two have basically the same price.
    Range - Tesla wins, but not by much, especially if you match Polestar 2 19" wheels on Tesla.
    Acceleration - Actually it seems that Polestar is better here (some reviewers did real world test , Polestar 2 won with 4.1 sec)
    Design - Subjective, but I would say that one from Polestar 2
    Charging network - Tesla has it better now, things are changing fast though as Europe is investing huge amounts in infrastructure.
    Infotainment - To early too call, as we still do not know this Google take on car. Farting sound is not a feature,just bad gimmick, just sayin'.
    Autonomous driving - Tesla has the edge, but how important that is really? Highway assisted driving on highway is possible on many modern cars, and that is what you have with basic Tesla.
    Build quality - Polestar 2 gets this one too. It is Volvo in the nutshell, and we all know Volvo as really good quality. Tesla , well not so much.
    So who is the winner? I would say, the buyer. More good choices, better competition. I just wish there were more of them.

    • @VoxelLoop
      @VoxelLoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As some notes on those:
      - Tesla's on-board autonamous driving hardware is a lot more advanced, though it's pending a re-write that will allow it to navigate itself around intersections hands free to follow navigation. (Planned for release later this year) - Currently implemented Tesla's vehicles can change lane automatically and take on/off ramps automatically too to follow navigation. I'm a bit sad that Polestar didn't implement any future proofing in the car in case they needed to do this in the future!
      - Some Model 3 Long Range's have been hitting around 4.1s 0 to 60 also, with the $2,000 'boost upgrade' you can order that's just enabled through software the car is capable of around 3.6s 0 to 60. With this optional upgrade, the Model 3 Long Range would still be cheaper than Polestar 2.
      Can't deny the Polestar's interior is nice though! It looks very refined, very Volvo!
      But man, can a manufacturer place cup holders in a good place for once!? It doesn't even need a gear stick, it's electric, just have a button then you could put the cup holders in the place were you hand rests like in a Model 3. I swear, I'm going insane seeing cup holders in places that make no sense in every new vehicle, EV or not.😅

    • @panzerkami2381

      Clearly you miss the point. If the Polestar is compared only to the Tesla 3 LR then Tesla won't win everything and then the Tesla fanboys will cry and cry.

    I don't care so much about the numbers vs Tesla (other than range) as I do about looks. Tesla has always been very bland and boring inside and out with many people stating the subpar fit and finish. People say that's not what they buy a Tesla for, and I get that, but why can't it do both? This Polestar looks amazing inside and out since it uses Volvo's gorgeous design language, and therefore it wins in my book everytime. When other EV manufacturers can match the range and ease of charge, then I'll buy that. The range, imo, is the only thing Tesla has going for it. Their bland looks have kept me away from them since the start.

      @krystiankornilowicz4577 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeff S there looks is what some people like. I like the simplicity of a Tesla. The main reason is that Tesla isn’t a full car manufacturer yet so they can’t spend time on the interior and quality. They need to pump these cars out fast. The lead designer has made some beautiful cars, they just don’t have the capital or the buying renown to take the time for interior design. Within a decade or so they will release a new line and I can bet the interior will look better since they are doing much better.

    Just wanted to ask why this car needs to "beat" the model 3? Surely, if it is good enough, it would be great that it is a real option for people buying EVs. Tesla mission is to help accelerate the transition to sustainable energy. If the Polstar is good enough, great for everyone.

    • @tribalypredisposed
      @tribalypredisposed 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but cars are a large investment for most people. Do you go shopping for one and pick the good enough one, knowing that there is one better than good enough?
      Polestar decided to go the shared platform route, and that one decision resulted in an EV inferior in many ways. It, and the form factor of the batteries they chose, is why the Polestar is a lot heavier than Model 3. That weight costs the Polestar in range, acceleration, handling...it has a heavy cost. The shared platform and battery form factor also gives you the limited rear head room, the hump in the floor for the middle rear seat passenger...
      The "advantage" of a shared platform is that it gives you flexibility of production to deal with the unknown rate of increase in EV demand. The downside is that a shared platform ensures that the demand that exists for EVs will mostly be for cars from other automakers and not Polestar. No one wants to spend $50,000 for good enough.

    No doubt better built than the Tesla. More traditional styling, which some might prefer. The 0-60 time on this car is only 0.1 seconds slower than the Tesla AWD Long-range Model 3. Impressive considering the weight difference. We need someone to do a steady 70 mph range test from 100% SOC to zero, to see what the real-world range is in the Polestar. In Canada, it is priced exactly half way between the Tesla AWD Model 3 and the Performance Model 3. Polestar 2 with the "Performance Pack" which is only wheels, brakes, shocks, but no more power, is the same price as the Performance Model 3. I like this car, but the insurmountable difference is the convenience and speed of the Tesla Supercharging Network which still has me leaning towards buying a Tesla AWD Long-Range Model 3.

    Looks great. EVs need to drop in price quite a bit for cash buyers but for those who always want new and lease cars the lower fuel and tax bills should put more on the road.. The charging network always makes Tesla favourite for anyone who does regular long journeys. We need more choice for EVs to really make inroads so I applaud this effort. I gave up a convertible and had a Zoe for three years but missed open air motoring so much I have gone back to petrol for a convertible because it is the only choice. In all other respects electric is best. I have bought a Mercedes SLK used, cost less than my Zoe but feels like the stone age by comparison even though I love it. A bit of a shock having to pay so much for fuel too (Zoe was basically free). There's also the constant risk of mechanical failure.

      Honestly the Model 3, and honestly Tesla in general, just has a very sterile/appliance-like feel to it. It looks decent from the front but all soft and uninteresting from the side and back. It is done that way for Aero probably but still, why so bland. I don't really like over styled cars like the Civic and also like minimalist stuff like the A-class, but the Model 3 just looks so uninteresting, bland, soulless. It drives pretty well though.
      The interior is another thing that keeps me away from leasing a Model 3. It is a bit like a plank from a DIY shop + a steering wheel because they needed to have one and a 15 inch laptop screen stuck on a stick. It works well but to me it looks awful and again, just bland. It reminds me of an Apple store where they have an iMac on a standard on top of an empty desk, and not in a good way. Compared to the Polestar 2 Tesla feels like an amorphous blob gliding down the road with nothing interesting about it, other than the software and the performance. To me the Polestar actually looks like a car, am in love with how it looks inside and out. The range and charging network is a big miss but honestly, Tesla fans, where are your "you just charge from home" arguments when comparing a Tesla with another car? You use it all the time against ICE cars but now it doesn't matter all of a sudden. What I am trying to say is: for most daily commutes the Supercharger network doesn't matter.
      The range is fine, still above average and will do the job for now. If I Absolutely had to get me an EV, it would be, without a doubt the Polestar 2.

    Polestar made Polestar first priority here, not the consumer. Picked a shared platform for production flexibility and lower development costs. Picked pouch or prismatic cells for ease of pack assembly. The result is that it weighs 745 lbs more than the Model 3 which is already a heavy 4,100 lbs. That weight hurts efficiency, range, acceleration, and handling. It will also chew through tires quickly because of the weight, especially if one does hard accelerations. The back seat should have better headroom giving this car's more upright styling and height. However, it's a more interesting looking car than most on the road. It's good to see a new interior design from "Volvo." The 2015 xc90 look is now the familiar look. Nice, but it's been around a while now. As for dynamics, it seems to drive like a sportier Volvo. And that's what it is. Don't expect it to feel like anything else. Enjoy it for what it is.
