But Pinkie is clearly closer to Maud than she is to Marble, which feels very unrealistic to me. Honestly, if Maud and Pinkie were twins, THAT would have been a KILLER twin pair.
Well looking back at cutie mark chronicles I don’t think that’s the case Pinkie left home when she was young and maud was the only sibling who would visit her
I’m so glad I came across this video! As a twin myself, you perfectly explained all the gripes I typically have with twins in media! For me, it’s about being able to balance the similarities that occur from being twins, but also being able to portray the various differences that make the pair their own unique individuals. But for some reason, writers just can’t seem to write twins convincingly. We used to be pretty good at guessing what the other was thinking etc. but after high school, we started growing very different. LOL! Very interesting video! You're the first person I've ever seen to talk about twins in My Little Pony. I collect G1 ponies, the baby twins are cute but I find it disturbing that there are only baby twin ponies, are twins a new thing in pony land or something?
I think some of the confusion with Zipp and Pipp is the continuity (or lack of) between the TV series and the comic. In the TV series they look like twins. They appear to be the same age in all flashbacks and even got their cutie marks within minutes of each other. Plus that book you referenced wasn’t the only one that states they’re twins. There were other “meet the ponies” sources that state Zipp and Pipp were twins. The continuity issue comes in the comic, which firmly shows Zipp as older by several years. There’s even a background picture that features a toddler age Zipp holding her baby sister Pipp.
I see Flim and Flam as the evil versions of Fred and George who escaped to Pony land. The problem is that most people think that twins can just be born "luck of the draw". It doesn't help with the "representation" of twins that already exists within media, giving a poor portrayal of what being a twin is like. That makes it really easy to misunderstand, and if misrepresentation is the only representation then some people are gonna think that's how twins work - unless they always have someone in the room pointing out every wrong thing. Not everyone has a compass for that, nor the patience to look too much deeper into it to actually learn about it and would rather copy-paste what someone else says or thinks about it. I, myself, am not a twin. I knew two identical twins who I viewed as aunt figures (and gifted my Bratz twiins sugar&spice keychains to when i was reeeaally little), but never really learned how identical and fraternal worked until long after I tried to write my own twin characters. I always "wanted" a twin, but that mostly came from my unknowingly-neuro-divergent, lonely child brain longing for someone to feel closely connected to. It's nice to actually research the science behind twins so that I can more accurately portray any of my characters who have a twin (or more). To hear so many different stories of twins and how they stick together, why they stick together, and reasons why they can sometimes drift apart. Everyone is human, but everyone can only experience the world through their own lenses. It's extremely rare for a non twin person to form a relationship with another that can be akin to the relationship between twins, but nothing can really compare - I imagine. Apart from maybe the experience as a conjoined twin, but, of course, that is a whole category of twin in itself with it's own unique complications per individuals involved.
Yeah, I can confirm, I’m closer to my twin than anyone else in the universe. Maybe marriage is a similar level of relationship, but I have never been married, so I wouldn’t know.
I can't write off the Barrel Twins that easily. They could be identical twins--if one of them is trans! I don't recall early merchandise for G5 stating that Pipp and Zipp are twins, but Hasbro would seem to trump the opinion of one writer, even when that writer is G.M. Berrow (actually, that one is a little tough, though it seems more likely than not that they are fraternal twins).

The RGB "theory" was presented in 4-Chan by an Anonymous who claimed to be working at the time on StudioB (D.H.X.)
But we do see baby clones of adult ponies running around, so it’s certainly implied. And since the show didn’t offer any other explanation, the mirror thing is all we’ve got.
@@PeacePetal There are two fillies that I remember that derail that idea Peace. Cuddles and Half Note. Neither of them have mothers that are even mentioned, let alone shown. This strongly implies that the reality of childbirth in Ponyland is more akin to what we know from our world. Also, baby Lofty and Shady both have physical features that differ from their mothers. Baby Shady has a red coat rather than the light pink coat her mother has. Baby Lofty is less dramatic her difference in that she only has a different eye color. This could be viewed as an error, but for the consistency in those differing traits. This too, implies that it's not a magic mirror that brought about their existence. So, no, it doesn't really work in the context of the show when you look at these factors. I may have mentioned this to you once before, but these kinds of inconsistencies are a personal point of frustration with this show.
@@marybdrake1472 Well, ponies are definitely capable of sexual reproduction, as well. I mean, we all know Slugger has a crush on Buttons. As for the merch continuity, there are mommy and daddy ponies. But there are some ponies, who definitely seem to be the result of asexual reproduction, in both the show and the toys/comics. And as for small differences like with Shady, that can easily be chalked up to epigenetics. But, of course, the real answer is that the G1 crew didn’t think things through very much.
@@PeacePetal You're not wrong about the crew not thinking things through Peace. I mean we can see it all over the show. There is however, one thing that does definitively shows us that the two aren't in the same continuity. Megan's age, in the T.V. series she is a young teenager, in the comics she is like eight years old. That alone shatters any idea that the two share a unified continuity. It would really great of that were case, because at least some of the gaps would be closed, but it just doesn't work out. On a side note, isn't it odd how this I.P. has provoked this kind of discussion among fans? I haven't seen it's like anywhere else. Save for maybe Star Trek. Most fandom discussions tend to be more about meaningless thing that I can speak of.
Many of the baby ponies are clones of their mothers, with the same color scheme, cutie mark, and name! In the comics, they make babies using a magic mirror. That legitimately happened.

-> Their "oriental" look is OBVIOUSLY a reference/inspiration (either on porpouse... or perhaps a memetic accident) to the INFAMOUS Disney stereotype of "twin siamese/chinese cats" from the movie "Lady & The Trump".
The RGB "theory" was presented in 4-Chan by an Anonymous who claimed to be working at the time on StudioB (D.H.X.)
Marble speaks in issues 86 and 99 of the comics.
Yes, I know, and I appreciated it. But it doesn't really make up for her absence in the series, in my mind.
new headcannon that either Barley or Pickle is trans, very happy about it
Yeah, that didn’t strike my mind until after I made the video, but it makes sense!
Aloe and lotus blossom are fraternal twins
That's what I said (at 4:40).
You forgot flim and flam

About the asexual reproduction being canon. It isn't canon outside of the comics. The show never even touched the issue even passively.
@@marybdrake1472 Oh yeah, they’re definitely separate continuities.
Wait, I thought overanalyzing was something that all fandoms did?
I'm sorry, but could you repeat that part about G1 canonizing that ponies reproduce asexually?
Many of the baby ponies are clones of their mothers, with the same color scheme, cutie mark, and name! In the comics, they make babies using a magic mirror. That legitimately happened.
@@PeacePetal I know it's a show for little girls in the 80s, but that is some of the dumbest nonsense I've ever heard from My Little Pony.
Wait... you are BOTH trans & identical twin?
-> You (and your brother) SHOULD be part of some research study.
For Science!
We were already part of some research because I have ADHD and my brother doesn’t. For Science!
Although perhaps I should mention, I’m not actually trans.
11:37 personally I always think it’s funny when they do this because I get to head cannon one of them as trans
