I truly enjoyed Chris Wongs videos while he was stuck at home in the UK during the pandemic shutdown - and then the excitement of seeing him get his email that said he’d be returning to his casino job with Royal Caribbean- saw him while he was quarantining in the balcony cabin before he could return to cruising with passengers! I wouldn’t have guessed any of the things he said (except maybe the last thing - which is something I try to do)!

I have to comment on #5 from Chris. About 4 years ago, we talked with a crew member who was wonderful, and he asked if we could mention him on a comment card. He didn't mention promotion, but he did say that crew are rewarded with off-ship time when they get those! That sounds like a great gift, and it takes so little time and effort on the part of the passengers.

I did not know about the extra off-time until my last cruise - but for me it was a pleasure for years to mention the names of very kind and friendly crew members. I also motivated people at my dinner table to do this 😉 I also introduce myself to the cabin steward with some Swiss chocolate 😉

We had a group of 7 crew members we “adopted” one summer - we would pick them up on their off days when in port (Canaveral) to go into town so they didn’t waste precious time on busses.
    They wanted:
    1. To drive through their favorite fast food joint (we pay, of course)
    2. To go to Target or someplace other than Walmart (only place where the bus goes)
    3. Depending on the crew member, either candy and “junk food” or healthy non-perishables. (our “kids” were in entertainment so had to watch their waistlines 😆)
    4. And to stretch out on our full sized sofa - especially the 6ft. tall boys!
Doesn’t really go along with your subject today, but thought you and your readers would like to hear of our fun summer.

I've used the name one writing my experience on the feedback. One that still sticks out to me is an assistant waiter we had on a cruise that was talkative. About a year and a half later we went on another cruise, he had transferred ships and was our waiter. He remembered us. Came up the first night, Hello Mr C do you remember me, I was your assistant waiter a year ago on ship X. He remembered everything down to how I like my coffee with desert and my wife likes her tea (even the brand). I was definitely impressed

The same thing happened to us on the Disney Dream! We were blown away that this waiter not only remembered us, but came across the dining room to say hello to us when he recognized us, two years later!! He even grabbed our young sons hand, greeted him by name and walked with us (and our other waiter) to our table. It was one of the most touching moments of my life, I took a picture of them from behind as they walked hand in hand and had tears in my eyes.

I was in a position where it would be very rare to get a comment left for me at all since I wasn't in a guest-facing position for the most part, so the few times my name did come up on a comment card it really meant a lot to me.

My family and I just got off the Oasis of the Seas and I always keep a list in my iPhone notes of the exact name of the crew members who stood out, where my encounter was and what they did that stood out to me. Loved Chris' point of view and his suggestions. I will probably continue to do cash, but will keep these in mind for gifts above and beyond whatever cash I would normally do. Another completely free gift that I have found is very appreciated by the crew is to treat them as a normal human being, not as a servant that is at your beck and call. My wife usually takes the lead in this, since I am a bit of an introvert. Every time we begin to ask crew members about their life (where they are from, family, their interests) they always get a gleam in their eye as they share their life with us.

My only addition to what's been discussed is not to wait until the end of the cruise to write a good comment! I generally sail NCL exclusively, and their comment cards are everywhere. If someone did an excellent job, write them up for it that day! It also helps you remember their name if you didn't take a picture if you do it right away!

However my favorite crew member informed me that's great but make sure to also list the names of the crew that made your cruise great on your end of cruise survey as that's what management looked at more.

Years ago I stayed at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. I was so impressed with the level of personal service that I wrote to the President of the Broadmoor. I especially mentioned a few people by name that stood above and beyond. He wrote back to me with a personal letter thanking me for the letter. He said, " I can't tell you how much pleasure it has given me to show your letter to our staff" ... ! What I'm saying is that a few kind words goes a long way to lifting the spirits of folks in the service industry. Words of encouragement are the greatest motivator that I know!

I thought this was a good crew gift for a lady .

On our last cruise (pre-COVID), our server in the MDR really liked the subtle and slightly spicy perfume I was wearing, mentioned it several times on an 8-day cruise. We went to the perfume shop on board the ship, and while we couldn't find that exact perfume, we found something that was very similar and bought a bottle. On our last night, in addition to extra tip above and beyond what we had already pre-paid, we presented it to her at the end of dinner. It made her cry happy tears because, as Chris said, it was the gesture. We paid attention, we viewed her as a human being and not a "servant", and we acted accordingly.

Thank you Tony for discussing this often queried topic. I became more aware of cash alternatives for gifts during my recent Alaska cruise. I learned that part of the Covid protocols included the denial of shore leave for crew members. This meant no quick trip into port to pick up a desired item the crew store might not have available. Interestingly enough, Chris' subject of laundry and snacks were at the top of the list! Laundry soap pods either filled with liquid or powder, and potato chips (crew store only carried Pringles, not to knock Pringles, but they aren't for everyone) headed the most wanted list. I learned that many crew members shop for items on Amazon so a great addition to the data gift card, would be a companion Amazon gift card.
One very thoughtful guest who was cruising a back to back, took it upon herself to go into port on embarkation/debarkation day with a shopping list of 30+ items to bring back for crew members!
Advice for cruisers who utilize a concierge or butler - tip first at the beginning of the cruise. They will remember you!
Everyone has their own style of saying thank you and all are appreciated but not tipping is a HUGE NO NO.

Props to the crew. They work very hard, for menial wages when compared to the wages in my country (The USA). They really make our vacation special. We build relationships with them over the time we spend, and get excited to see them again when we visit a ship again. I can see how people will like to give a more personal gift vs cash. I really like some of these ideas. I might bring a few sim cards and some new compression socks to give out, in addition to cash.

They order all their needed supplies through amazing and usual they get delivered to their home port like Miami for example for pick up. I am goning on a cruise this sunday, and I will HAVE a SIM card and socks when I board!

I've only been on one cruise, but I watched a lot of videos!😃 I brought a gift bag with some snacks, hygiene stuff, little wall magnets and some cute paper and pens... I had "Thank You" cards with me that I wrote a personalized message on, with cash, for my Waitress/Waiter, and Room Steward, that I handed to them personally on the last night and included their names for recognition in my "End of Cruise" survey!😁👍 I also ended up leaving some items that I had packed, but didn't use, like laundry pods, antibacterial soap, glow bracelets and a night light, to "Lighten My Load" for the plane ride home!!

I went on a cruise early November. I made a gift bag with memory foam unisex slippers (since we didn't know if we would have a male or female cabin steward), Large bag M and Ms, can of cashews and a can of almonds, pair of novelty socks, and cash on top of the prepaid gratuity. You gave me an idea regarding the magnets. I use them in my cabin, didn't think about them for the gift bag. I have a cruise year end so I started a bag with somethings that you've mentioned. I have note pads, pack of pens, lip balm, hand cream(good for moisturizing after frequent hand washing, I have dogs), socks and variety of snacks.

I have followed Chris since he started vloging, I think I was under his 100th subscriber. I was married to a Filipina, I live close to a Philippine market. Going to the Philippine market before a cruise has been a to do before a cruise for year's. I stock up on Philippine potato chips, candy, candy bars and sometimes fresh bakery goodies 😋. I have always been greatly thanked. Some how I ended up with a sealed Carnival Dive-In theater blanket at the end of the cruise.

Interesting about the NBA, but I'm from Minnesota and I doubt they want a Timberwolves jersey!
We had one crew member tell us she wanted body wash when we asked if we could pick up anything for her in port; I suppose that's another one of those things you'd just as soon have on hand and not have to worry about running out. Another crew member told us she wanted vitamin C, as for some reason that was a hard-to-acquire item for them. One of the musicians, who I saw on one cruise and then was going to see again onboard in two weeks, asked if I could get him clear gel nail polish; playing day after day is hard on his fingernails, and he needed the gel polish to keep his nails from breaking.
Another thing to keep in mind is that although the crew does have a store onboard for them to buy what they need, the hours it is open might conflict with the crew member's working hours. Getting to the store on their off hours might be a hassle.

As gifts for the crew member, I never considered that the NBA jersey or any kind of Americana we take for granted. Maybe incorporating some Americana into sports socks. Sim cards I know. LOL! About crew gifts of food from their home country is something we did one time. We were fortunate enough to come upon a store that sold lots of different snacks and we noticed some crew members buying some of these items. Hubby and I started asking everyone what was the best to buy. After finding everything we wanted we went to pay and lucky for us one of the crew emmener was looking out for us and notice that the lady was overcharging us on everything and he got in an argument with her about what she was doing! Anyhow her husband came to the cash deleted our transaction and started over with the right prices….we thanked the crew member (who was from another ship) waited for him outside and gave him a thank you note with $20.00 inside and for future snacks.
P.S. I always keep small thank you cards in my backpack or purse. I can give them out with or without money whenever someone deserves one. I worked retail for almost 40 years and this is something something did for me after she watched me deal with a very difficult customer…the card said: “you handled the situation with sensitivity and discretion. He left without saying thank you but I am not. Thank you for being the person you are.

My wife is very crafty. She makes custom little gift boxes to put small treats in, including candy, lip balm, hand sanitizer, etc. She also makes custom face masks for crew to wear while off ship. She hands the gifts out to almost any crew member that she interacts with so it would be cost prohibitive to give the more expensive gifts mentioned in the video (except for the socks). For a select few she has made crystal and glass beaded lanyards. The crew members light up and are appreciative, even with these small tokens of appreciation. We sail Carnival exclusively. From Inverness, FL.

One of the common threads I saw was that what he was asking for were mostly consumable items. Things they use up then dispose. Use up the data card. Eat the cookies, excuse me, biscuits. Then dispose of it when it's gone.
They aren't interested in gifts, trinkets or tchotchkes.
Did you see those small shelves behind him? They have no room for that kind of stuff. They may keep it for a few days then just toss it.

    • @emmib1388
      @emmib1388 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

agreed -- read a long time ago of a couple who would bring on each cruise tchotchkes from their hometown and t-shirts etc. Imagine if every cabin did that? And a mention on another from a crew that donates the stuff to a thrift store ... and of course no matter what you give, they want to keep their job and get a tip, they are going to express gratitude. Want to give them something they need? On port day ask them if there is anything you can get for them....

  • @dmissme
    @dmissme 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I will definitely make a huge effort to keep record of the staffs name to get them credit and see them promoted…
They work so hard and make our vacation feel special. I used to bring gifts to the child care staff for taking care of our kids….they loved it. We got more dates in 7 days then we did in a year. Since we don’t have family near us…

Great topic Tony .... I only want to add .... ASK !!!
I once on a 15 day Trans-Atlantic found that our Central American Cabin Steward was heading to Iceland and did not have a coat which he needed to get off the ship for an Internet connection. I couldn't find him one in port so I bought him one on board the ship. I also gave him my own gloves that were cell phone sensitive!
My travel companion always decorates our room with Party Store decoration ... when we were taking things down to throw them away, our Cabin Stewatd insisted we leave them as he wanted to take them down himself to brighten his Cabin space!!! You never know ... so just ASK!
