Now this is REAL education that should be in schools - Technology understood and applied, with the theory behind it. Every child should have the opportunity to assemble their own computer and their own radio, grow some fruits and veggies, and undertand the way the world works and grows.

Great video! Back in the 90s I was stationed in Japan with a HAM friend. He was crazy! I helped him several times do Moon bounce comms back to the east coast. It was great hands on building and trying antennas and figuring out the moon to find the sweet spots. Will always remember the challenge.

What a great introduction to ham radio. I have been hamming for over 50 years and am still learning. I have met the most amazing people on the air.

I've been a ham since I was first licensed in 1991 while in high school. It never gets old. There's always something to explore and learn. I currently have more ham projects then I ever have before.

Excellent video that was well done and informative. One thing I noticed is that the clubs in
England seem to have done many things right with the younger generation of new hams.
Here in USA, I have not seen much enthusiasm from younger "potential" hams. The clubs here seem to filled with "us" old farts. The kids overseas seem well spoken and enthusiastic about radio and technology. Good for them, hopefully it spreads to other parts of the world, including the USA.

Electronics is taught in schools now. I wish they did when I started secondary school in the mid 60's.

The SDRplay RSP SDR (Software Defined Radio receiver) is an ideal, low cost way of getting to experience amateur radio - it powers via USB to a PC and covers everything from short wave through to microwave bands. See th-cam.com/video/RfBuLJgjAng/w-d-xo.html - it uses excellent British technology (the RSP is manufactured in Peterborough!) with a support team in the UK - Perfect for schools and colleges

My State has more square miles /kilometers than the Country of U.K., so when out beyond the metropolitan city, cell phones at times are sketchy, even Satellite phones have issues, with mobile radios, portable mag. Loop antennas I can send radio traffic and even short email over HF to the next State, from out in the middle of nowhere. For Engineers it's also a license to develop RF gear on its bands, encryption excluded.

The mid 20th century was the heyday for amateur radio. Back then it really was "amateur" radio. Hams built and modified their own radios and antennas. Today's so called amateur radio is the same as commercial radio, with different rules. You buy your radio, which even the factory cannot work on, you buy an antenna, you hook it all up, and start talking. I don't see anything even remotely amateur about that. Technology and commercialism has destroyed what was once real amateur radio.
I am a general class amateur, and I have gone back to what amateur radio used to be. I bought a 1950s HF radio, and rebuilt it from the ground up. I also designed and built my own antenna. I sold all my VHF/UHF equipment. I am quite happy talking around the world on my antique radio and home built antenna. If you want to truly experience what amateur radio actually is, I suggest you give it a try. It doesn't cost a lot of money, but it does require some skills and knowledge that are not even on today's license tests. I also suggest you get a straight key, and practice Morse code, or CW.
