Christian, You Are Free Not to Vote

  • The right to vote in America is not a binding duty (without regard to other factors) for Christians in every election.
“The children are free.” We are free from human institutions. As citizens of heaven, we are not bound in every situation to participate in the processes of human government. This is not our homeland. We vote - if we vote - because the Lord of our homeland commissions us to vote. And he does not absolutize this act above all other considerations of Christian witness.
In this election, with the flagrant wickedness of both party candidates, the logic that moves from “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution” (1 Peter 2:13) to the necessity - the binding duty - of voting, has lost sight of three things:
    the radical meaning of the words, “for the Lord’s sake,” and how it relativizes all human authority and how it brings to bear many other considerations;
the radical freedom of the children of God from the inherent authority of human institutions like government; and
the aim of every citizen of heaven in all human engagements to display our allegiance to the values of another world.
I am not saying we are bound not to vote. I am saying that the children of God are free to hear the voice of their Master about how to best witness to his supremacy. I will vote. But I have no intention of voting for either of these presidential candidates.

Kinda stumped by some of these comments. Christians are free not to vote and there is no denying that biblically. But if you feel compelled to vote, which probably most will, then vote. Some of you need to read up on what the Bible says about obeying your conscience and not imposing it on others when it comes to matters the Bible doesn't address specifically.

I sort of agree but, voting doesn't help if all the candidates are chosen by elites and don't care about our best interests. It also doesn't help if all the candidates are evil. I voted once because I believed it may help a few People, and I thought it may have more impact since I did so locally. However, there I believe these decisions are largely predetermined. The average man cannot run for president or governor and never will be able to.
This world is flawed and so are it's nations. We don't have a civic duty as Christians but, I do believe that we can still make life on Earth better for some people while following our father in heaven. The real question is if voting is the way to do this, I would say that 90%+ of the time it isn't if not 100%. Maybe we can improve these systems but, they will never be just and will always wind up getting worse.

    • @charlotter5656

You aren't wrong. Although nothing is said about voting in the bible, God did say that he is against abortion.
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." - Psalm 139:13-16
God is also very clear about His stance on Israel.
Whoever blesses Israel will be blessed,
And whoever curses Israel will be cursed.” - Numbers 24:9
Thus, looking at the POTUS candidates, both may be unworthy on many many levels. But one candidate is honouring God in regard to the two issues mentioned above. God did not ask us to obey our own conscience, He asked us to obey Him/His word. God also asked us to not be afraid to speak His truth.
      Much love.

My allegiance is to God, Jesus Christ, and the Word of God. I believe God's will is revealed in the Bible. The Bible teaches me that God is a Father who defends the fatherless and avenges innocent blood. It also teaches me that my responsibility is to do things that are in agreement with what my Heavenly Father is doing. If I refuse to vote for a pro-life platform, then I am refusing to defend the fatherless and the innocent blood being shed. Trump is not Jesus. I'm not voting for Trump as the leader of the church. No. I voting for him as the representative of a political platform, which is in alignment with my Christian values, which themselves come from the Bible. I am not responsible for Trump's personal life. He is. I am, however, responsible to act on my faith. I vote because I don't want to be passive in the struggle against darkness, against the murder of innocent babies, against a platform that is diametrically opposed to the convictions of my Christian faith.
I have great respect for Pastor John Piper, but unfortunately I disagree with this teaching. Especially at such a critical time in our nation. Render to Caesar what is Caesar's. Taxes, civic duties, obedience to the laws of the land, and, as a member of a society whose government functions by way of elected officials, VOTE! Pray first, educate yourself, pray again, refuse to stick your head in the sand and hope it will all go away sooner rather than later, and then go VOTE! Vote for the most biblical platform, not the personality in the person who is representing that platform. God bless you all, and God Bless America! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

My voting for secular officers is primarily governed by what candidate I perceive would maintain the continued liberty to promote and proclaim the Gospel. Yes, there are many other issues, but this is the primary one to me. At the same time, I can easily see how persecution of the church might do American Christianity some good. However, I'll let the LORD bring that in His good wisdom and timing. In the mean time I feel like I should seek to protect Gospel freedom so long as we have it.

It is so difficult for me to understand and at the same time my heart cries as I hear this because he completely ignores the fact that we need this president to have an opportunity to end the massacring of millions of babies. This is more than an election, its evil vs good. I believe that the ending of abortion will have a significant effect on the future of our nation. I strongly believe a revival will happen and more souls will come into the kingdom of God if we choose the right president.

I guarantee you that God will not ask anyone why they never voted for Trump, the question will be why they rejected to believe on His Son JESUS.
I can not be held accountable for the actions of a country. God never sent the angels to Lot to ask him why he let Sodom get sinful.
JESUS said that those who are truly of His sheepfold are not of this world and they do not speak of this world. A true Christian comes out of this world.
This person that i replied to is putting the president of the US on the same level as Gods only begotten Son. They said a revival will come and more souls will enter the kingdom of God if the right president is chosen. That is about as anti-Christ as anyone can get. No president can bring people into Gods kingdom on the Son of God JESUS CHRIST.
Mr *one hung Low* you will also get your chance at Gods throne and i highly doubt you will be concerned with me or anyone, we will all stand before Gods throne and we will all be way to occupied with giving our own answers as to how we lived.
If Trump wins JESUS is our only hope, if Biden wins JESUS is our only hope but you see that different apparently.

Dearest brothers & sisters in Christ, please consider that not voting would be to give another vote to the Democrats who support LATE-term abortions. God's stance on abortion is CLEAR. He is against the killing of innocent life. Abortion invades the safest place in the world for a baby, the womb.
Let us not take part in enabling this evil act. Vote for Trump, because he is firmly against abortion. Don't judge his imperfections, God has a history of using imperfect people to do His will. Our God is wonderful, He does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called.
    "The nation is like a mighty lion;
When it is sleeping, no one dares wake it.
Whoever blesses Israel will be blessed,
And whoever curses Israel will be cursed.” - Numbers 24:9
Secondly, God is for Israel. Trump supports Israel, the Democrats do not. These two factors are solid reasons enough to remove doubt about who Christians should vote for. Please do not sit on the fence. Your vote is crucial. Much Love.

It grieves my heart to think of voting for either presidential candidate. Although there were prominent Christian leaders, who, a few months ago, were pointing out that Paula White led Trump to the Lord, the sanctification process seems to hardly have begun in him yet, &, therefore, it is painful to think of him being in a position of being a leader. Young men & women would be looking to him as an example of what a leader should be, & in his current state, that would not be a good thing at all. Right now, neither candidate is a good role model. Hopefully, whomever becomes president will get their heart right, and will pray for God's guidance before they make decisions on our behalf.

      Darryl H
I understand how you may feel brother about these candidates. Horrifying concept to think we are putting our trust in ether. But let us not forget that God places who He wants in power. God precedes over the nations to adopt His sovereign will. God wants us to be holy-not happy. Jesus said I come with a sword. If we only look at the surface of man, we do get disappointed. If Moses was running for the office and we know of his background. Would he be a viable candidate. Grew up in the riches of Egypt-can't relate to the working man you may say. Then murdered a man-that would disqualify him in our society. Then he lied about it-hmmm... Then he was given a task by God. Said he wasn't the man for the job. God said I am right there with you Moses. Then Moses said, I'm a bad speaker and what if Pharaoh doesn't believe me and mostly and above all. My own kinsmen, what if they won't believe me when I walk back to tell them, I'm their leader and the man who's going to save their day. And who shall I tell them told me all this. And God said to Moses. Tell them that, I Am, sent you.
God wants us to put our vote of confidence in principals and precepts. Now I ask, did Moses meet the qualifications as a man as he was. Or was it that God saw something in his heart that Moses stood for the right principals. Does the Democratic Party stand for the principals of God-in more cases than none, they do not. Does a republican candidate stand for the principals of God. In more cases then none, they do. So if you stand for righteousness, then what party most likely fits your platform.
Moses took on a wicked political system. Elijah did the same, along with Isaiah. John the Baptist took on the system and paid for his life doing so.
I look at this election and people want jobs and freedom and do what they want to do. Never speaking once, that in order to get these blessing one thing has to happen. Just like the nation Israel did when they stopped their practice in killing their children on the Alters of Baal and Moleck. God hated their waywardness from their true God and seated to worship false gods. He brought Israel to her knees and into captivity. We in America are doing the same with our unborn children. How long do you think God will allow such a practice, until a hook is placed in the jaw of America and we are taken into captivity. So I'm voting for principals, not for a candidate. Because men fail us- but If a man happens to be on the right side of Gods principals. Then America will still have a fitting chance to be what God wanted us to be. A nation that serves Him in all areas of life. Just like Paul when he argued for his rights as Roman citizen. We need to be like Paul and argue for our rights as Christian's too - and the only way I know is vote.

I agree. Is a citizen rights. There is no law in The USA that is an obligation for any citizen to vote, is a choice. Therefore we are not obligate to vote at all. We have not broken any commandments in the bible. We have NOT broken any law at all. Now if a Christian wants to vote they can do so. Is a CHOICE not an obligation. As Christians our main focus should be praying for what God wants and not what we think. Christian had put their faith in man to much and they forgot that God put President and take out President. God is the one who does it , is not the votes. The Christian has just has focus in talking about politics instead of talking the Lord is coming soon. Is out of control. The politicians do not need any help God is in control of what is going to allow to win. We need to put our faith in God and not in men. Especially when this candidates main focus is not walking the path of the Lord with thier testimony. We need to pray for them to God to help them and God to make the final decision and not USA.

All conservative thinkers and believers should remember that there are only two platforms in this election, and only two candidates that will push forward our cultural trajectory. While I agree with Piper's assessment of Trump's behavior and character, we do not just vote for a man, we vote for a platform. He is not a king, he is a representative of a branch of government and is responsible for advancing a conservative governmental philosophy. Either a conservative regime or a liberal regime will determine who sits on the US Supreme Court for the next thirty to forty years. A vote for Trump is a risky vote in that his character and behavior have been at times shameful and sordid. We do not really know what we will get as conservatives if he is elected. However, if Clinton is elected, we know exactly what we will get--our culture and our freedom (including religious freedom) will almost certainly be eroded so as to make America unrecognizable as the land of the free. Conservatives should have a conviction to vote for conservative ideals, notwithstanding the fact that the representative of those ideals is not the best we could have and should have put forward. I respectfully disagree with Piper's conclusion. We cannot punt on this election, get another four years of liberalism and a liberal Supreme Court, and expect anything other a speedier slide over the cliff of relativism, socialism, and hatred of God.

I am going to take an example given by the late Pastor Peter J. Peters when discussing the Two-Party system:
Back in either the late 1980’s or early 1990’s, he spoke on a campus about extremists (he was heavily labeled as a right-wing extremist, despite the fact that not a single student or teacher could define what exactly a right-wing extremist is). To prove a point, he took a Bible and a history book. He placed the Bible on his right side and the history book on his left side, then asked the students which book was on the right side…
According to their perspective, they pointed to the history book as being on the right and the Bible as being on the left. Translation: it is ALL a matter of perspective. The parties are, if you study American political history deep enough (especially the history of the last 120 years or so, but it certainly goes much farther than that), just two Communist wings of the same bird. The Democrat is the Marxist Communist and the Republican is the Corporate Communist. Neither party affiliates with God’s Law, so therefore, our dependence on the parties for fulfillment of man’s law is contrary to God and He will refuse to Bless His children or this nation of New JerUSAlem (which is the prophetic regathering of Israel, according to the everlasting Abrahamic Covenant; the Jews claiming to be Judahites are not of Jacob Israel, but are of Esau Edom). I recommend seeking Pastor Peters’ two 8-part sermons: “Baal Worship” and “Wh0r£s Galore In America.” These two really show you the idol worship and the h@rlotry committed by our country. Though these sermons are over 30 years old, they absolutely are relevant today. Just look at the idolatry of Trump right now! Duped Christians and evil heathens alike are turning to him for national salvation instead of turning to the REAL Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branch: Jesus Christ, our one and only Savior.
Our nation does need a national salvation, but we need national repentance first. Our system of government absolutely needs to be torn down. As much of a false flag operation January 6th was, the desecration of our Baal god government is what our Lord Jesus Christ wants His people to do. However, it cannot be done without the Hand of God. We need to obtain a nationwide turning to Him before the Baal towers of DC sorcery (watch Pastor Peters’ 2009 2-part documentary, “DC Street Sorcery” to understand what I mean by this; you will never look at Washington DC the same way again) will ever fall…

I agree we are free, so many people think that this world is all and be all. But if you really hear what he says " I will vote but not for these 2 candidates. " there are other issues you can do like vote for your local governments, Congress, and Senate seats. There other ways to vote and effect your community. I'm proud of Pastor Piper to stand for truth and not compromise.

PASTOR..."SHOULD I VOTE"? "WHO SHOULD I VOTE FOR"??
Voting is a real part of "Christian stewardship"! The apostle Paul made much of his Roman citizenship even though he emphasized that we have a superior "Citizenship in heaven" (Philippians 3:20). Even during Babylonian captivity the prophet Jeremiah exhorted those in captivity to "seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile"..(Jeremiah 29:7). JESUS said we as believers are called to be "Salt and Light" to this world and while this cannot be directly interpreted to mean political action such as voting it also does not exclude that. I might add to this the fact that multitudes of men and women have sacrificed their lives in wartime to secure our right to vote. I conclude that voting in any election (especially this critical one) is not merely a right but a responsibility! A "responsibility of Christian stewardship". So then the only question is who to vote for not should I vote. I believe the Christian should vote "Intelligently" - not emotionally or from a cultural point of view only. The Christian must vote from a "scriptural point of view" after study and prayer. There has almost never been a clearer understanding of exactly where each of the presidential candidates (all of them..not just the big two) stand on important issues of our time and especially those which concern the freedom to preach the gospel. How should a Christian vote is a better question for me to answer than "who" should a Christian vote for. I conclude ...A Christian should vote! (My opinion). A Christian should vote "intelligently " , "prayerfully" and "carefully".

I was raised a Christian and have no intent or desire to ever leave God's Church, When I was very young I felt God was calling me to participate in the political process and get involved with Government but it is my opinion that rich politicians had other ideas. There are probably a lot of crazy people in the world who do not pay attention to worldly needs and money and to be honest I don't know if prayer to God will help a person or not. I might point out that in Christian History the Roman Catholic church was both religious and also granted secular, civil authority. The origins of Christianity are both spiritual and secular so far as I can tell from the study of History. I have o admit, I do not believe our votes count because of my experience with Government and politics. People have suggested that maybe I should change political parties and such but my opinion is that the process is rigged and the people in power will do anything to retain power. I think Christians are crazy if they ignore money and secular government because if you ignore real power and real money then religion and your religious freedom will not matter. I have spent too much time being abused by politics and politicians BECAUSE I am conservative.

So IF elections existed before in the time of Yeshua, between Herod and Pilate, which of these two political candidates do you think would The Son of Man endorse to His followers to vote AS religious leaders do today? Neither, I think, for both are corrupt. Now I'm NOT saying that modern day politics is as the same as the politics in the ancient world HOWEVER, the principle is the SAME. The Son of Man represents ANOTHER Kingdom, which have rules, ideologies and principles different from the mortal realm as He stated on Mark 10:42-45.
Mark 10:42-45 (WEB) Jesus summoned them, and said to them, “You know that they who are recognized as rulers over the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
But it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant.
Whoever of you wants to become first among you, shall be bondservant of all.
For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
The world as we know it, differs greatly from this humble mindset. Almost EVERY nation of the world today aspires to be the FUTURE world POWER, which reflects more the satanic dream of being like The Most High.
Parents encourage their children to give their best in class. In the government and economy of GOD we are taught to "consider others better than" ourselves (Philippians 2:3) which is the direct opposite of having that superiority complex.
In this world, when you are poor, plain looking, and less educated, you are looked down upon by some* men respected in society.
In GOD's Kingdom, as long as you got a pure heart, you are NUMBER 1.
The basis of this world in electing their officials is either based on their (1) Social status (2) educational achievement (3) past achievements (4) wealth and last but not the least (5) popularity and fame.
Isaiah 32:1 (WEB) Behold, a King shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in justice.
In GOD's Theocratic arrangement, The Lambs criteria in selecting His future co-rulers, "officials" or princes isn't based on their social standing or worldly fame BUT based on whether they are overcomers.
    That is His Standard
    His requirement is simple
Revelation 3:21 (WEB) He who overcomes, I will give to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father on His throne.
Now what worldly ruler or magistrate would share the presidential seat to a common employee, although he's faithful? None.
But we serve a different King.
    A different Lord.
    A Heavenly Master.
And that's how humble, meek and transparent Our Master is, to ANYONE, rich or poor, Abraham or Lazarus, Jew or Gentile who would follow the ways of His Kingdom, the Kingdom that would put an end to ALL other kingdoms of this world, like a Stone uncut strikes the prideful image made of iron, clay, bronze, silver and gold to dust, carried by the wind, nowhere to be found.
Such will be the fate of the concepts, principles, philosophies, ideologies and standards of men.
But YAH's Love, Justice and Righteousness will forever stand.
So will those who does His will, after this world ends. (1 John 2:17)

I voted for Trump just because of my Faith in Christ, to make sure abortion be under control in USA, and Church always have a voice. But this was my main concern. This 2020 I am thinking the same way, If it be for supreme court justices, cause it is a critical thing yet, I might vote to make sure the Christian Faith is protected on earth, however, I do not like so much going on with both parties and their way of living is not Christian at all to me.

Many Christians have prayed about voting, but not many i think, have prayed with open hands and an open heart, willing to receive whatever the Lord has to say. I prayed, and God told me to abstain from voting in this election somthat my hands would remain unstained. I am not telling anyone else that they shouldn't vote, only that they should pray and seek God's will. Some are saying that we will be held accountable for not voting if "the wrong" candidate gets elected. I have two things to say to that: first, both are the wrong candidate and if you're voting for the lesser of two evils, let me ask you, would God ever require us to vote for anything evil? Secondly, the election is in God's hands. Daniel 2:21 says, "[the LORD] removes kings and sets up kings". He certainly raised up bad kings throughout Israel's history when they fell into rebellion. What more does our country need right now than a wake up call?

  • @2timothy23
    @2timothy23 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I know many Christians in this country probably find this clip offensive, but it is Biblical. Christians are only called to submit to the government (where they can), pay their taxes, and pray for our leaders (Romans 13:1-8, 1 Peter 2:11-17, and 1 Timothy 2:1-8). Unless voting is mandated by law to Christians, it is a matter of conscience. If our conscience tells us not to vote, we are free not to do so according to our conscience. It is not a sin to vote or not to vote; this is a secondary matter. As Piper rightly stated, we are citizens of heaven; we are only pilgrims and strangers here (1 Peter 2:11). And it is sad that believers bicker among themselves about which unsaved leader they will choose to lead an unsaved land from an unsaved mindset. Instead of just voting, we court candidates and take sides against one another when it is God that is still our sovereign king. Now that the election is over, I pray believers will stop losing their minds and keep their trust in the Lord (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Actually in Massachusetts I ONLY voted for the ballot questions. These two candidates really don't represent me. Even Trumph although I like his spunk taking on everybody he still seems to be on the side of the Jews when he was at the kiss the ass of the Jews at the AIPAC conference. If Trump gets in, good for him, but I actually wrote in the name Jesus and left ALL the other ballots blank since most of them represented the Democrats who are no better than Communist and highly influenced by the Jewish lobby which is the Anti-Christ party....

Ok Pastor , and the Christian is also free from having a go at a human government's processes that they do not participate in if the human government winds up making and passing laws that effects how a Christian lives their life on earth .
Sorry Son this is not Heaven so how about preaching a sermon that winds up working for people on earth instead of
a sermon that only works in heaven .
" For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also . "
    - James 2:14-26 New King James Version (NKJV)
This is what runs me away from Church , when the pastor preaches faith without works .
