Great breakdown here, it honestly gets funny seeing people just pointing to them buying free agents when the only one they spent big money on was Freddie. This is an expert front office. The other thing that has to be brought up is the Dodgers coaching staff, being able to "fix" as many players as they have is pretty astonishing, not to mention they supposedly treat their farm players better than any organization in the MLB, the players all the way up to double A have traveling chefs, and triple A gets premium catered meals, most other farms just get left over concession food. It's all a well oiled player development machine, and to put it simply, it works wonders for them

      @dominicishmael ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, when you have a $265M payroll (tops in the bigs) you can AFFORD to take a lot more risks. They'd better be good having that type of payroll. It's over $100M more than the league average.

Great video that concisely states what I have been saying for the last five, or so, years. You could argue that when the new ownership initially took over they spent lots of money between 2012 and 2015 on free agents, but since then they have drafted and developed phenomenal talent, and have leveraged their farm system depth to trade for superstars! Betts, Scherzer, Trea, Machado, Darvish, all were big names traded for since 2017, and yet somehow the Dodgers have a consensus top three farm system, if not the best or second best still to this day. Friedman and the front office he has built are genuises!

A major piece was Dave Roberts who worked cohesively with the front office game plan. Roberts brought in a positive mindset with strong work ethics that allowed players to excel and feel respected. Essentially the clubhouse culture was transformed to a winning culture based on a team first mindset. Players bought in to the vision of rotations etc. Throw in the batting and pitching staff the whole nucleus of the Dodgers organization is what makes the team so good.

As a correction, I wouldn't say the Dodgers and Angels share the same market. I've noticed that most baseball fans outside of California tend to think that they do. Their stadiums are over an hour away from one another, and the Dodgers' market is one of the largest major metropolitan centers in the world, while the Angels' is pretty much one giant suburb with a couple big amusement parks. I get that they are *_kinda_* close geographically (31 miles), but Los Angeles and Orange County should be considered two distinct markets.
For reference, Dodger Stadium and Angel Stadium are three times further from one another than Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, and Wrigley Field and Guaranteed Rate Field, and two times further from one another than Oracle Park and RingCentral Coliseum.

Thank you (insert Michael Scott gif from The Office). Honestly, so many Baseball FB and Twitter trolls, Padres fans, and bandwagoners like to ride on the Dodgers for spending money on talents like Mookie, Freeman, and Trea Turner and neglect to mention how they built up players like Kershaw, Bellinger, Smith, Lux, Buehler, and Urias, taken chances on players like JT, Muncy, Thompson, Anderson, Heaney, and Gallo (who wasn't mentioned in this video and contributes in small ways) and stay competitive. The teams you mentioned (Mets, Angels, Phillies, Padres) make splash trades and signings and it mostly amounts to nothing. The Mets and Phillies are barely figuring it out, while San Diego scuffles and the Angels are hopelessly lost.
Also, yeah, it would be fucked up if the Dodgers still had O'Neil Cruz and Yordan Alvarez. Holy shit, that's too much power.
Also, yeah, for being a Braves fan, you went into this with an unbiased view. Big amount of respect to you.

This is an excellent breakdown. Casual fans throw out, "salary cap", "they can buy anyone" etc and my counter has always been, "Great. Now what's your excuse for why your team isn't as successful as Tampa?"... The Dodgers do a better job with player development than any other organization in the sport. Atlanta, Tampa, and Oakland are in that category as well. Unlike teams like Houston or Chicago that tanked to build their contending roster, LA has sustained success for a decade with the development, gem finding, and moving parts. Their ownership is committed to winning and Friedman is the best executive in the game. They'll continue to be a force for a long time.

They trade prospects (who are a crapshoot) for expensive high end talent. There are maybe 5 teams in the league that have the payroll capabilities to be able to do this. They aren't "building a team" they are using their superior cash reserves to buy and retain the best of the best at OBSCENE costs.

Dodgers are just smarter and very forward-thinking. Sure, they have money, but they also draft and trade circles around other organizations. Great video! Liked, subbed and now commenting to bless you with the TH-cam algorithm. Keep it up!
Angels have Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout, that’s pretty much all they have going for them.
It’s been proven time and time again the front office plays an important role in building winning teams and more importantly for sustainable dynasties, a winning culture.

I always acknowledge that the Dodgers development has been unbelievable and it seems like some superstar talent is coming from their farm very often. It does help being able to sign a massive star every offseason too.

@@mcee1993 And traded for Mookie Betts... and Trea Turner... and Max Scherzer (though no longer with the team)...
The salary of those 3 players is more than MANY organizations entire payroll. Those 3 alone in yearly salary are close to $100M. Give me a break.

I never had a problem with Alvarez trade because at the time NL didn't have the DH and there was nowhere to play him. Would've been nice if they got more for him, but, they got what they got. the Cruz trade is looking like a huge mistake. although there was a backlog at shortstop too.

The Dodgers have always been able to identify top pitching. I mean always! And that is half the game. Throw in a knucklehead trade like the Mookie Betts deal and scrape up the leavings of Turner, etc. that you can throw out for free if they don’t work out…..

I like how you didn’t include James Outman as one of the top prospects and he’s looking like a future superstar. Says a lot about how good the Dodgers farm system is.

    • @MrBlake14

Crazy thing is Outman isn't even inside most top 10 prospect lists for the Dodgers' system lol!!! He's usually listed around 11-15.

There is no way to shed the narrative that the dodgers are made of money when they quite literally spend more money than any other team in the MLB. I think they spent 61 million more dollars on their 21 roster than the second highest team. I mean cmon

Having a $300 million payroll, is LITERALLY, buying a championship...weather the players are there organically, or were bought via free agency, the fact is, that they can pay max dollars for the best players when needed...only the large market teams can do that...Freeman, and Betts were not drafted by the Dodgers...Here's s thought...What if ALL of MLB just realigned into 2 leagues, with large market teams/divisions in one league (call them the haves), and all of the small/middle market teams in the other (the have-nots)...this way both NY teams, LA/Cali, Chicagos, etc. can whore out their zillion dollar payrolls against each other, while the other league can draft wisely, and still have chances to make it to the World Series...

One correction: Mookie was not the World Series MVP in 2020, that was Corey Seager.

Dodgers havent won a WS under a full 162 game season schedule since 1988. And dont give me the "players and owners had no control over the season" babble b/c those both sides could have started to play in June, but they let so much time pass to where 120 games became 80 and eventually agreed to 60. But you know what? This wouldnt be disputed if they just did it again. Champions gotta defend their crown to show they aint no fluke. They gotta validate it over and over until dynasty becomes an empire.
