Pedro Martinez is arguably the greatest pitcher to ever live. But one thing is for certain, when he was at his peak he stood alone as the best we have ever seen. This is the story of how Pedro Martinez defeated the Steroid Era.

How Moneyball RUINED the Oakland A's
มุมมอง 11Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Moneyball was a beautiful thing that the Oakland Athletics front office executed to perfection throughout the 21st century. But as John Fisher’s tenure prolonged, Moneyball seemed to become less about winning with a low payroll and more about simply just having a low payroll. Thank You for watching. See you in 2 weeks for my next video!

How Did the DODGERS Build A MLB Juggernaut
And Pedro averaged it for 7 season. Now that's ridiculous
Awesome vid. Though I am was an Indians fan during Pedro's Reign of Terror, it was hard not to admire him. He was so very entertaining, even in beating one's own team. And he was so small of stature! I worked with the Cleveland Indians media at that time and so once had a chance to be next to Pedro-- tiny fella! Yet, man, somehow he could bring that fastball of NITRATE! Amazing, incredible, impressive. Thanks for the vid.
I love pedro
Pedro Martinez, especially in 1999 and 2000, was the most dominant pitcher in the game. His fastball looked like a tiny aspirin at opposing hitters. And Pedro's curveball was devasting.
Dude had some long ass fingers and could drop the circle change like nobody else.
Trout shouldn't have won the MVP when his team stunk, and had a losing season one year.
He was on steroids too
The greatest ever. True to his number 45...he is so legendary.
He's the GOAT pitcher. 8th all time in the most important stat (WHIP) and did it all in the steroids era while only being 5'11 175lbs.
Don't overlook Tim Lincecum, another slim guy who dominated for a time. Martinez had career longevity. Lincecum didn't. Martinez was a better pitcher, but Lincecum has his place in the hall of the very good.
tim just had very hard mechanics
Pedro was one of the best ever an unbelievable talent
Kinda click bait acting like 5'11" is a dwarf size
The average pitcher height and weight is 6’3 210.
Can we all say the steroid era is was better than what we see now
Hypothetical statistics can't replace talent. Good players are always better than hypothetical analytics. When the As have been good over the last 20 years, it was with a core of good players they developed and were controllable. Yes moneyball can help support a core, but you cant build a team with it.
Moneyball ideas are not hypothetical stats tho
His changup in his prime was basically unhittable.
really liked the quality of the vid. I subcribed :D
Should be in the hall of fame? You lost me
sammy sosa should absolutely be a hall of famer
@@InDepthBaseballYT hall of fame liar and doper
Including “newer” stats like FIP in videos about players from this era kinda sucks bc no one knew about them. It ruins the immersion
Great video, except that the year 2000 is not part of the 21st century. There is no year "0," which makes the year 2000 the 100th year of the 20th century
Im of that aware now lol but it sounds cooler when i said it like that
I dont see any reason why not. If you never brought it up. Nobody would care. Although I gotta admit guys like Chris Young and Chris Sale and Randy Johnson got a natural advantage
Great video! Pedro is the goat and great human signed all my stuff as a kid always will be one of the best pitchers of all time and short of papi maybe the most beloved Sox of all time
Not much of a 'How' he defeated the steroid era... This is just a bunch of surface stats. no analysis
I have to point out- Billy Beane didn’t invent the Moneyball concept per se. Sandy Alderson and Walt Jocketty established its beginnings when they were GM and assistant GM in Oakland prior to Beane’s promotion EDIT: And if you really wanna go back, Branch Rickey ran a proto-Moneyball back when he was running the Brooklyn Dodgers and hired Allan Roth as a statistician
The problem with baseball is all the awards are opinion based. Statistics are all that should matter. Pedro was the 99 mvp in our hearts and he did throw that perfect 9 in montreal. And i'm a lifetime Orioles fan and he was an instant loss when he was pitching against us
real
@@InDepthBaseballYT its all a popularity contest its actually driven me away from watching baseball even though i play alot of OTP25
I still can't believe Harold baines as a hall of famer

I feel the same way about Jack Morris
Jack Morris is absolute trash. Sorry, not sorry.
Slow down and get the marbles out of your mouth.
Sorry john im trying😭
Gotta be a typo at 14:43, right? Based on IP, I assume those stats are for Pedro from 97 through 2003, and that you didnt just cherry pick his best year to compared to Johnson's averages?
That is a typo yes. That graphic is comparing 97'-03' Johnson and Pedro. Generally when they were both at their peak
slow down
I would never give an MVP to a pitcher, esp over a catcher who has prob the toughest job on the field physically and mentally if he is calling pitches, watching hitters, and keeping an eye on baserunners all while trying not to let a ball get by him. You should do a vid on making a case for Pudge Rodriguez being the best catcher of all time...14 times all star 13-time gold glove (1st all-time for C) 7 time Silver Slugger winner 1 MVP and 1 ring. In a ten year span in his career, he carried a .315 BA while hitting a career 296 over 21 seasons 2,844 hits (1st all-time for C) 311 HR 2,427 games caught (1st all-time for C) 14,864 putouts (2nd all-time for C) The most impressive thing about Pudge is he is 8th ALL TIME for DWAR among position players like Ozzie Smith, Cal Ripken Jr , Brooks Robinson etc and is the only catcher in the top 10...There may have been catchers with more HR power but in my opinion for average and power, defense, and longevity behind the plate there is no better all-around catcher
MVP is not about who job is more important lol it’s an performances award first then take winning into the convo.
Hows it feel to be wrong. Pedro is a fucking goat
@@tokeypokey Well a catcher did win the MVP that year so i am not wrong....I have been a Sox homer since i was a kid in the 80s and was in college during Pedros run. It would have been different if Pedro could have influenced the outcome of more games but he cant....hence the reason the Sox were mediocre during those 2 years...If the sox had made the WS or even a deep playoff run it may have been different...What real VALUE did Pedro bring to the team success? Its too bad he wasn't putting up those numbers in 03 or 04 then you have a case
The value he provided was over 11 wins above a replacement level player that year
I was thinking of KRod for MVP in 2008 as an outlandish choice. I guess that season has been put under a microscope. Pedroia came out of nowhere for me.
Red Sox fan here, love that you made a video about one of our favorite boys! 😄 Also sorry to be "that guy" but the 21st century technically started in 2001, not 2000
Let me push my narratives in peace😂
@@InDepthBaseballYT how you know dude was clean? Were you there?
Take one look at him
@@InDepthBaseballYT everyone said that about Alex Rodriguez 🤩
king is back
That’s a Eephus
That’s not a curve…..
99 cents on CollX, that’s how good.
The goal of every front office should be to win the world series. Not increase valuation.
Ofc it’s all white Sox 😂

Chapman still throwing 104 at 36 years old.
insane
1st comment pls pin
This would be impressive if they pitched full games and not just 3 or 4 innings
Try 1 inning. And it's still extremely impressive. I can tell you've never played baseball beyond maybe middle school
Paul Alene’s threw one 104.6
Never
And wilt scored 100 points in a game
Every single one they made contact that's impressive too
But his best year was his first year. And Judge is better if he doesn't get hurt all the time
He has 762 HR 514 stolen bases 7 MVP should have 10 and no HOF that’s sad. ⚾️
デラクルーズの方が速いかも
藤浪)))))
And arraez still hit it slower
LMAOOOO
Why do they pitch like this?
So they don’t get hurt they are position players
For fun the game is pretty much over it’s just for fun
All of these games are blowouts, so they use position players to not waste their pitchers arms
That’s why you saw mainly the white Sox
His fielding solid as fck, but hitting not even close. Also war useless
Would love to hear a detailed analysis from you about why war is a useless stat. With all due respect
2:59 rookie yes, but that's it. Nothing more than that. War useless
