The hubs and I love Darin Olien! So blessed we just met him for juice at SunLife a couple of weeks ago and got to chat for a couple hours when we were visiting, and dude is totally dialed in on all levels! Great podcast episode!👌🌿
I’ve tried the barukas and they are incredible good. The trail mix is my favorite but the site is out of them. I just bought some bags to give to my friends, everyone should be trying this mighty nut.
Hey can you post what Darin suggested about basic water systems for your drinking water! BTW, LOVED this episode!!! Found out about Darin about 6 months ago and find him fascinating and his info is what we I've been looking for!
The way Darin describes his dad. I'm just like his dad. Smart, an empath, but all over the place. I'm interested in different things on different days. A jack of all trades, but never a fully realized meaning of the tasks I'm doing. For years, I've considered this a flaw as I compare my life against those who have done everything "right" and seemingly are farther ahead or actually "on schedule". I'm now considering it and working on... realizing that it can be a powerful thing as well as something that can be quite destructive, if I don't handle things in a healthy manner. I very much "feel the room" and get a lot of information from the non-verbal or things left out of the conversation. I'm just beginning, at 45, to realize that it is not something that is "wrong" with me, but just a different way of being. It's a mind f*ck.
Does anyone know if this Kickstarter is still going? I know this video was made 2 years ago, but I'd love to help out anyway I can! I think Darin is doing amazing work and his passion and enthusiasm spreads to all who listen! Thanks Rich Roll for having him on your podcasts and introducing this whole new world to me and my family. We need more people like you guys!!
Bless you Rich for the amazing people & wisdom u bring in the world (yes, this is an old video, all those with Darin are pure gems), much much grattitude, from Belgium
I am loving this podcast. On the note of water improving our performance. I watched as my oldest daughter "stalled" in labor. She was dehydrated. The nurse midwife was aware enough to give her some IV fluids and within an hour my granddaughter was here. It made all the difference. I never would have thought. Great point.
Great podcast, one of my favorite guests. His voice is SO calming and even toned. I'll definitely pick up the book, and grab some nuts and water! In personally love the long form. I have a killer commute and hate those 30 min pods I need to fumble to change mid drive. Best pod of the yr IMO, THX!
I really wish that Mr. Olien would flat out tell us which companies we can trust. Doing this doesn't mean he has to bash another. It's just really confusing, as a consumer, to know quality product.
These superfoods are also rare and grow in the world. Places like Brazil and Peru are not sustainable eco-systems and have been in danger since Claude |Levi-Strauss lived with small tribes along the Amazon. I can't see this viable when large corporations get involved.

Love supporting all of your guests. I just went to barukas.com and made my first purchase. Also just bought the Laird's Supercreamer at my local health store...trying to eat right live right. Thanks RR, you da man.
Love the podcast! I'm Brazilian and I know baru for sometime an I eat lots of baru nuts everyday for a year now. One of the reasons is for preserving the Cerrado. Good to know that it is a superfood. Unfortunately, very few people here in Brazil know and eat baru.
Hi, Just got my bag of Baruka nuts, once I'm done my 36hrs fasting I'll be grabbing a hand full of these with a Moringa smoothie. Thank you Rich and Darin for this great conversation full of wonderful information.

Another great chat. But when the rubber hits the road, will Darin make his superfoods available/affordable to people in the west living on the bread line or struggling? Or is this just another expensive product only in reach of the middle class and comfortable? Can Darin pull off the ultimate where he is giving back to the indigenous communities, turning a profit for himself and co, but also allowing superfoods to be within reach of poorer folks in the western/'first' world. Let's see. If so, this man has my respect.
My concern as well. You can forget about the middle class which is pretty much gone by now so my projections are largely negative and I would love to be proved wrong. There is something about 2 really buff privileged white guys having a carry-on together and talking like valley girls that brings out all my character defects. I am not writing anything here in this response that I haven't previously written directly before; I think it's great that Rich Roll sleeps in a tent but he owns a large home that makes that an indulgence. I was wasting a bit of time watching a not high brow mystery series, British, Midsomer Murders and then stumbled on an episode I believe in series 5 toward the end entitled The Green Man about a mysterious homeless man who really did live in a tent full-time until a bunch of adolecent (sp) yahoos killed his fox and destroyed his habitat. All of a sudden I began to take the series to heart. Hope you receive this reply; great comment, tx.
@@evelynbaron2004 you seem to be stereotyping these 2 pretty hard. I think it's great that they are promoting an economic means for indigenous communities to make money and protect their land. The point is too much of Brazils land is being destroyed just because a white person partners with the indigenous doesn't always make it wrong.
Rich Roll, could you please ask Darin to ship Barukas supernut to Europe? :) By the way - very awesome podcast! Darin is so awesome! As always, super quality content. Thank you, Rich!
Superfoods effect has more to do with placebo than actual impact on health, a lot of smoke and mirrors around the topic as well as clever marketing. Don’t get me wrong, very fascinating and I can geek out researching and trying them, but fruits and veggies are the true superfoods.
But, these things he's finding *are* fruits and veggies. That's kind of the point. Not all fruits and vegetables are created equal. Why not exam the nutrient profile for as much as we can responsibly harvest?
Each part of the world has their own " superfoods" aka local fruits, veggies and nuts. People should focus on their own local foods instead of making this big ta-da about berries from another country. This is really marketing to make money. I am from Brazil and grew up eating acai. It's a berry similar to blueberry. We ate it and enjoy it and it was known to have a lot of iron. Now living in the US, I'll never but acai powders or juice, they are a bad version of the real thing. I just focus on eating blueberries, cranberries, blackberries and raspberries since these are the local superfoods.
Very interesting. Buying his book today.Didn't expect this interview to be so deep mindful and spiritual! Awesome! Any thoughts on Amla fruit ( Indian fruit) powders?
America has everything yet we are consciously seeking for “superfoods” to take from other countries to hopefully give us a fix from our poor diet & horrible persistent lifestyle. We complicate everything when diet is supposed to be so simple.
Exactly. We have superfoods growing all around us. Dandelions, plantain, amaranth, Nettles, purslane and much more. All of these are local and they're free. I prefer to Harvest mine from my own backyard so I know they're not sprayed. Of course there there are many other superfoods that are available right at your local grocery store.
Touching and informative. I really took a liking of Darien. He seems to be doing it for the right reasons, as long as he also makes sure that locals also have the possibility to get access to them at a fair price.
I have degenerative joint disease am 58 both hips already replaced n cannot bear to do my knees but they are bone on bone. Now have type 2 diabetese. I have severe latex allergy which lead to severe allergy to banana papaya peaches and even avacodos. Its such a bummer. Im depressed no energy. Use food banks for food so its hard.
If you really think about it, calling something a superfood is a terrible way to go about it. What does that imply when we say that? It implies that the foods we normally eat are subpar and mediocre and if you eat some berries they are somehow 100x better and magical when in reality, these "superfoods" should be the STANDARD. It's not that these foods are super, it's that the standard meat diet is so toxic that it makes these foods look magical. Our ancestors ate plant foods 24/7 and that was their baseline.
I hear you but we live in the present world with an exploding population, unprecedented ecological harm globally and simply no way to obtain these foods without spending a fortune and leaving a large carbon footprint.
Darin, This is great work you are doing. I admire people like you that sacrifice their time to find ways to improve and fix the health of the earth and people I eat healthy as well and I care about earth health. I just follow the basics. The interesting thing that I have seen is that even though these people that have access to these super foods on a daily basis, they have a short lifespan. I meant native people from amazon and also other native from other areas as well. I understand that there are other factors, like genetics, medical access and so forth.
They mentioned slashing and burning rainforests for cattle; &, if natives eat that it could adversely affect their longevity plus diminish the rainforests
There was a lot that was valuable; from the affluent days of my youth I keep 2 or 3 really special people in my life one of whom sent me, this week, 2 postcards from the Amazon and having visited her in Sao Paulo on numerous occasions am familiar with these vegetables. At the risk of being a kill-joy, yes this was super informative and certainly I learned some new things about dealing with anxiety, but guys. The food deserts. I no longer chase a buck and in fact my food bill has gone down since going vegan but I don't buy vegan snacks and pretend meat etc. -- yes I invested in an Instant pot for legumes and alternatively slow cooking stuff but there is stuff out there I can't be bothered with. Ifeel like a jerk pointing this out but you are the good guys. Just imagine what I feel like writing to the twits out there, which I avoid by taking out my dog or going swimming and like Archimedes the Owl in the Once and Future King, which has been on my mind recently, often just feel like engaging in owl like denial and announcing, 'there is no boy'. But carry on, you're enjoying yourselves and helping thousands of people. And Fran Liebowitz is a necessary person, which is not a non sequitur because I often feel like her.
Thanks to the both of you. I should really stop reading the comments, but it does remind me of why we may be doomed. Most of the comments are from people who are interested in a habitable planet. But If the others remain in denial, brushing off the awareness of the effect they have on the only known living planet, when as humans it is our responsibility to see to it that life thrives; their attitude will destroy all life. Meat production will kill the planet, but the concern is completely absent when the switch could not be easier. The meat corporations are destroying the ecosystems that they know nothing about. They and their customers don't want to know. Everyone who knows anything about space exploration and populating other planets knows you don't disturb planets should life already be there. What about Earth? The problem is money but it could also be the solution. Meat corporations will find that clean (lab) meat will be easier and less expensive by far to produce within ten years and they won't be able to afford to raise animals.
Yes, but I was struck by something written recently; humans are in immanent danger of destroying themselves, and the planet will continue on vr well without us. We are collectively guilty of outrageous hubris,
It is easy to have good health with simple foods like unrefined cheap staple foods like whole grains and tubers, plus some vegetables, plus vitamin b12 supplement. To avoid vegan deficiencies, can check out: www.eatrightpro.org/practice/position-and-practice-papers/position-papers/vegetarian-diets
It's all good as long as it's not Peruvian marching dust. Cutting edge of nutrition; reminds me of the haul Sir Walter Raleigh brought back from his travels, or the Voyage of the Beagle. My only enduring concern is that this eco-system is in trouble; my best friend is Brazilian and campaigns tirelessly, because she's rich and she can about ecology and she doesn't feel sanguine about how long this will last. So elitist concerns remain.
You must be kidding. I apologize, in a bad mood, he's a super good looking guy and a great person I suppose but when does he EVER wash his hair? Or is that part of the mystique of being a super endurance guy who sleeps in a tent even though he's got 2 children and doesn't need to?
Great show, but the narrative about the Cerrado its half, important, but partial. For example: Cupuaçu it is a fruit well know in Brazil, use as ice cream, cookies, juice, etc. I believe that Oilen, have visited very poor states like Maranhão, Piauí and Tocantins, those are less developed places. In this big region, The Cerrado, it has farmers, investors from Brazil, Europe and US! Main activities are: soybeans, corn, cotton and coffee. The beef industries are in a corner in this moment. Those guys dont need extra acres.
I live in Argentina and it is almost impossible to get maca here, the import is forbidden. You find some maca pills and some maca fake products. It's so frustrating.
@@joshsanchez9245 Because pharmaceuticals want to make money turning maca into pills. You can't find it here in its natural state. Besides it's forbidden by law to take maca out of Peru.
I like Darin but there are some things he got wrong: About land predators in the Cerrado. There are mountain lions and jaguars, brazilian jaguars are massive, much bigger than the ones in central america, over 220lbs. There is no mandate to raise cattle(?). Deforestation started in the late 70s to grow soybeans, corn, cotton and pastures. It's done mostly by southern brazilians, they're mostly of german descent, nobody is shocked to see a white guy there. You need to keep 35% of the land intact in the cerrado and 80% intact in the Amazon. Of course, there are illegal loggers, but it's suicide for the large agribussinesses to break the law as they face heavy scrutiny. It's not that bad and there is a possibility to keep both conventional agriculture and more sustainable extractivism in place. I love baru nuts but it's simply not comparable in scale. Brazil makes hundreds of billions of dollars exporting meat and grains, that money has been used to finance roads, schools, hospitals, electrical power plants. While Brazil is nowadays a service economy agriculture is still a large source of hard cash, dollars. The average brazilian living in the Cerrado is 20cms taller nowadays than in the past due to better nutrition and medical care brought by agribusiness. Life expectancy went from 50 years to over 70.
I agree that conditions in Brazil have improved since the '70s but having been there recently (I have a close friend I visit frequently) I would not in good conscience paint such a rosy picture as you have. Perhaps better to leave it there.

There's food that is destroyed, then there's food like products. Get off the superfood bullshit. food that is alive is food food that is not alive is not food. Stop it, stop it!

I mean, take incentive, try to contact the company and ask where they source their items from. Usually they will gladly show you with transperancy.

Yo Rich, where can i get those glasses?
You must be kidding. I apologize, in a bad mood, he's a super good looking guy and a great person I suppose but when does he EVER wash his hair? Or is that part of the mystique of being a super endurance guy who sleeps in a tent even though he's got 2 children and doesn't need to?
Hard as rocks forget these nuts
Can i soak the baruca nut for hour so that i can eat it.
i was trying to understand wich area was he talking about as a brazilian. Cerrado. that's where
Darin looks like Mark Harmon (Gibbs from NCIS)
We need to stop cutting down the rainforest
👍👍👍
Great show, but the narrative about the Cerrado its half, important, but partial. For example: Cupuaçu it is a fruit well know in Brazil, use as ice cream, cookies, juice, etc. I believe that Oilen, have visited very poor states like Maranhão, Piauí and Tocantins, those are less developed places.
In this big region, The Cerrado, it has farmers, investors from Brazil, Europe and US! Main activities are: soybeans, corn, cotton and coffee. The beef industries are in a corner in this moment. Those guys dont need extra acres.
thank you
hey guys, I want to ask is that the podcast on youtube and on soundclound are the sam things ?
Do GOOD ANYWAY
I live in Argentina and it is almost impossible to get maca here, the import is forbidden. You find some maca pills and some maca fake products. It's so frustrating.
Why is it forbidden?
@@joshsanchez9245 Because pharmaceuticals want to make money turning maca into pills. You can't find it here in its natural state. Besides it's forbidden by law to take maca out of Peru.
Where’s the water podcast??
Did anyone try the Barukas nut ?
Biggest land predator in the amazon is the Jaguar, look it up.
Oh and yes, its endangered.
Humble? This guy is stealing the plant man!
Change is strong below the government level. I would like to see blockchain tracing of these super food products.
IVE YET TO WATCH THIS BUT IM GOING TO GUESS IF HE MENTIONS ANY FRUIT IT WILL ONLY BE BLUEBERRIES
and you would be wrong. He mentions a large number of hard to obtain fruits that will cost you a fortune.
so what are the best superfoods ? that are going to make me a superhuman and live superlong ?
Sometimes I want to scream listening to the parade of amateur nutritionists pushing crackpot pseudoscience
Your physiology is in chronic need of a Snickers
@@nicholasatom4563 he's not wrong though
Full of vagueness
I like Darin but there are some things he got wrong:
About land predators in the Cerrado.

People.... Here's the goal ability factor of this superfood label. There's no such thing as a super food it's all hyperbole hype made up by marketers.
There's food that is alive,. There's food that is destroyed, then there's food like products.
Get off the superfood bullshit. food that is alive is food food that is not alive is not food.
Stop it, stop it!
It sad this is happening
