My plastic transmission went bad within its two-year warranty so luckily the shop replace the part they said they put a better part in there I don't know if it's true or not, LOL. But it has been working for three more years so my tractor is 5 years old now. But now my deck is all rattling all over the place and things coming off, haha. I think I'm going to have to take a good look at the deck and secure it again better for like the 4th time. Good luck have fun enjoy life and thank you.

There are literally dozens of videos showing how to replace all the other belts on my mower, but this is the first one I found that shows what I need. My Husqvarna appears to have the exact same transmission and belt. Thank you so much.

One reason they malfunction is grass, twigs, dirt, and mud getting caught in the mechanism on top of the transmission. If yours starts acting up, clean the top completely first. TH-cam has a video on how to find out what is wrong with it, should it start malfunctioning.
It is filled with grease for life, but the axle seals wear and eventually leak. They are easy to change. If you let it keep leaking, the transmission will eventually fail from lack of lubrication.
When replacing screws into plastic, it is a good practice to place the screw into the hole, then apply downward pressure while turning it counterclockwise until it slips downward. Then immediately quit turning it counterclockwise, and turn it clockwise to tighten it. Doing that will use the same threads the screw originally made, when it was first screwed into the plastic. If you do it like that, you will never wear out the threads in the plastic, no matter how many times you remove and reinstall the screws.
IF you keep the top clean, and replace the axle seals when they start seeping oil, the transmission will last quite a while.

Thanks for this video, doublewide6! I have had my Poulan Pro for almost 6 years and the drive just gave out. I don't have too many hills, but I do have lots of tree roots and soft yard to contend with. I will try to tackle this situation soon. Thanks for the guide to replacing the belt and hopefully that is what my problem is and I'm confident that I can get this done!

Great video Bob. I went to the website of general transmission and they have a video about this trans and they say the belt should never need to be replaced on the video. LOL Can't remember who it was but i think i have seen one video about these plastic transmissions it had a problem and the there was no serviceable parts inside it they had to throw it away and replace it thats all i know about them. Hope everyone is doing well. Have a great weekend. God Bless!!!

I've had a ariens with that trans for maybe 7 years. Bought it used. 4 years ago I blew out the axle seals and some grease towing a yard roller up a decent hill. Replaced and mowed on. Had .75 of an acre at the time. The last 4 years I've used to trim and mow wet spots on 10 acres of hilly open field. (sometimes entire yard). Now I've lost power up hills and I think this is why. Thanks.

I bought my Ariens (built by Husqvarna, same parts), A20AV46 (20 hp B&S motor 46 inch cut) in 2014. It has the same plastic tranny as yours (General Transmission RS800). I have an acre lot plus rental property that I mow and also a church property that I mow. It has lots of yards under it belt(s). I just today replaced the leaking axle seals, they started oozing grease two years ago. Sharpened the blades once, replaced once. Replaced the original air filter last week. Replaced the battery once. Still on the original belts and spark plugs. Original tires, added green slime. It's the best riding mower I've owned. Have owned four so far. Two MTD's, one Craftsman.

What I’ve found several times, when they were told tractor has to have a new transmission is removed battery and box, vacuum all the grass out, then blow air under drive unit close to rear and remove 4 screws
    Pressure wash really good
Problem solved and works great again 😊😊😊😊

Yeah I was quoted $1400 for new transmission & install. Talked to the manf. and they told me just to replace the driven kit on the outside for $80. I did that, but didn't seem like there was anything wrong with it. I think it was just the thorough cleaning like you say that did the trick for me. It's nonsense they have so many exposed moving parts subject to packing grass that you can't reach to blow out in normal daily use

I haven't had that issue yet but I've had to replace axle seals and I found out they go bad because there is to much slop back and forth with the axle. I’ve been wondering the same thing for days while working on this. The one I’m working on is grinding as you attempt to drive. It’s like gears won’t mesh, making me suspect that drive belt should stop spinning when not driving, but it spins constantly. Is it supposed to? It’s like a skidoo clutch, at least in appearance. The belt looks ok, but not perfect, and could have shrunk a bit? I dropped the transmission as it was a pita to work on in the tractor.
      Any suggestions?

  • @SH-qu5rt
    @SH-qu5rt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I have the same tractor owned it 3 years and it's the worst one I have ever had. My issue is the forward reverse pedal doesn't move. I can go forward it's really hard to push to increase speed, it won't return to neutral and in order to get it into reverse I literally have to stomp the pedal. To the point that I bent the reverse side of the pedal, I just pressure washed all of the crap built up on the top of the transmission and it works a little better. Changing ground speed in forward is much easier still won't return to neutral and still have to jump on the reverse side of the pedal to get it into reverse. Last tractor was 20 years old when i replaced it this one is 3 and I am ready to take it to the junk yard. Never had any luck with Husqvarna and never would buy another product from them. When I purchased a Poland Pro I didn't realize it was made by them or I never would have dropped a dime on it

There is a vertical pin sticking up in the top of the transmission. The long horizontal push rod has a looped end the fits over the pin, then an E-clip locks it down so it won't hop up and get loose. I am starting to run into the newer mowers and blowers as far as repairs and the lack of quality. It makes me sad to see the industry going to plastic on everything. The triangle shaped screws you showed are designed as a one time use and are a real bugger to get back in. I have been going to the hardware store and purchasing screws that actually work. I just repaired a Husqvarna snow blower, 3 years old with a broken arm that holds the drive cable on the front cab. They are made of flimsy plastic that break really easy. I informed the owner he could expect it to happen again in the future. The replacement part is $50 and requires removing everything. I cringe at having to work on the newer riding mowers. I am about to retire from doing small engine repair with the way its going.

Based on the amount of possible "dead" transmissions discussed in these comments, I'm hoping that someone might want to sell me a Primary Variable Speed Drive Pulley for my Craftsman 19.5 HP 42” LT2500 Lawn Tractor. (Sears Craftsman Model Number 944.602630).
As discussed here in 2009 (for this one year only) Craftsman decided to use the problematic (plastic) General Transmission (GT/Gentrans) RS800 Transaxle.
The tag attached on the transmission reads General Transmission 415663 (87007 C4) and 415663C0100033.
It is a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)) and not a hydrostatic drive.

These transmissions are the worst. I run into the ones that the bearings have rusted out and trying to get into them isn't pleasant. The customers are not comfortable paying the labor cost of replacing the parts.

May be I don't know for sure. The plastic is reinforced with some sort of fiberglass mesh.
